Evan Lennox is going nowhere fast. She's living with her grandparents after her parents bailed on her, she got kicked out of her posh private school, her ex-boyfriend proved to be the biggest sleaze imaginable, her former best friend is a back-stabber, and her current best friend is stuck in backwoods NJ. To top it all off, one teeny, tiny fire she lit to burn some memories of her ex goes a little out of control and winds up igniting a good piece of a very powerful family's pecan orchard.
Evan lands her pampered behind in court and gets sentenced to community service. Which she knows she deserves. But the hard labor and humiliation may be her undoing.
Until she meets Winchester Youngblood on the site.
Everything about him is tricky, confusing, not at all what it seems, and so sexy, Evan can't resist pulling closer. But every step she takes to get to know him gives her more of a reason to back up and put him as far out of life as she possibly can. Because Winch is one hundred percent complicated, and Evan isn't looking for that. At all. She needs to meet a nice, responsible guy, not share searing kisses with the charming hustler she met after they both got sentenced in court.
But Winch is so much more than what he seems, and Evan finds out that she's falling hard for the guy everyone underestimates and writes off. And Winch realizes that Evan is the one person who's ever challenged him to ask for more out of his life, and her courage inspires him to try to be the person she sees when she looks at him. With every single odd stacked against them, Evan and Winch need to find out whether they have what it takes to fall for each other.
Liz Reinhardt is a perpetually homesick NJ native who migrated to the deep South a decade ago with her funny kid, motor-head husband, and growing pack of mutts. She's a fanatical book lover with no reading prejudices and a wide range of genre loves, but her heart will always skip a beat for YA. In her spare time she likes to listen to corny jokes her kid reads to her from ice-pop sticks, watch her husband get dirty working on cars, travel whenever she can scrape together a few bucks, and gab on the phone incessantly with her bestie, writer Steph Campbell. She likes Raisinets even if they aren't real candy, the Oxford comma even though it's nerdy, and airports even when her plane is delayed. When she isn't writing, Liz Reinhardt teaches a fantastic group of diverse 8th graders in Savannah, GA. Rebels Like Us, her latest YA novel, is full of hot kisses, angst, homesickness, and laughs that are almost as good as the ones that come from the stick of a melty ice-pop.
It’s not a good sign when I can’t concentrate on a story because all I can think is this:
I believe that there’s a time when most writing rules can be broken, or at least bent to a certain degree, but this was not the occasion to disregard that pithy advice to “kill your darlings.” Reinhardt’s darlings are not only alive and kicking, they appear to be multiplying at an alarming rate. This book is riddled with similes. And analogies. And overworked descriptions. The writing is laboured to the point of being distracting from the actual story, a problem that might have been fixed or at least curbed with tighter editing.
By way of example:
“His voice is a midnight cannonball into a winter-frigid lake, and the chills that rush up and down my spine leave me shaky.” – Can anyone tell me what a midnight cannonball actually is?
“.. for a second Winch does nothing at all, which makes relief and sadness tango cheek to cheek in my heart.” – My feelings must have two left feet.
“My voice whips out and smacks at the lazy night air. His eyes, so dark denim blue, feel like they’re soaking up the puddle of all my crazy emotions.” - I suppose denim is pretty absorbent.
“Brenna’s laugh is the chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and double cherry on top to the sad vanilla boringness of my life.”
“He talks like he’s some blue-face-painted warrior used to commanding legions.” - I can’t even talk about that one.
“He’s the path lined with wildflowers, and I’m Red Riding Hood. I’ve been warned, but I just can’t resist the blossom and perfume that calls me over.”
“My heart is a pod of dolphins beaching themselves on the rocky shore for no apparent reason.” - There was no apparent reason for that sentence.
“My heart had been warming like a surfer’s contained bonfire, but his words are the gasoline that’s exploded it into an arsonist’s wet-dream.”
“His eyes snap at me, like your loyal dog trying to warn you there’s danger ahead, willing to bite to make you listen.”
“I take my furry foot back out of the trap and get ready to hop into some clover.” –Honestly, this one went on so long I tuned out. Something meaningful about rabbits and traps..
“I look up at her face, but she hasn’t recognised the ugly constellation for of all the dull stars I’ve thrown into her sky.” – I hate when people throw ugly stars in my sky. Bitches.
“If she wasn’t so damn beautiful, I’d say he looked like a bull I just waved a bigass red cape at.” – I wouldn’t, Winchester. (WINCHESTER.) I really wouldn’t say that if I were you.
“Brenna’s like a little kid drooling over her favourite candy in the bright store window. I’m like the dentist randomly showing up with a drill to remind her she has a mouthful of cavities.” – Because dentists often show up randomly. (Also, Brenna was such an insufferable twit in this book.)
“A lazy-afternoon sunshine glow unfurls low down between my hips and blooms up my spine, climbing fast and high as a magic beanstalk to my heart.” – Well which is it, a sunshine glow or a beanstalk? Also, growing a beanstalk in your nether regions sounds like cause for alarm to me.
“That our relationship won’t be a tug-of-war or bumper cars or a roller coaster or any other kind of fairground/theme-park analogy my brain can concoct.” – Oh come on Evan, I’m sure you can come up with another one.
“I smile at her tendency to hyperbolize when things get bad.” - Okay, now that’s just the pot calling the kettle black.
“I force the sugared-up tween hopping from foot to foot in my secret heart to cut her happy dance short.” - Nothing is more annoying than a pesky internal tween doing a jig.
Then there’s the repetition: emotional as hell, boring as hell, hot as hell, honest as hell, strong as hell, sure as hell, pissed as hell, slick as hell, scared as hell, depressing as hell, scruffy as hell, tired as hell, wounded as hell, crazy as hell, rude as hell, funny as hell, hard as hell, sexy as hell, determined as hell, tough as hell, confusing as hell, dirty as hell, fast as hell, nervous as fucking hell. Are you sensing a pattern?
While ostensibly this book has a plot (family secrets and obligations! A girl with bad boy issues!), it feels like it was written BECAUSE SEX THAT’S WHY!** And that’s fine.
I just expected more.
If you enjoy plot lines of the “I want you but we can’t be together” type, back and forth misunderstandings, and several instances of near-sex before the.. main event, then by all means, go right ahead. But I got to a point in this novel where I simply didn’t care anymore. I had no investment in the conflict and the plot, and the question of whether the characters would surmount their difficulties became completely uninteresting to me. It doesn’t help that the secondary characters all feel like plot-devices, poorly developed and popping up when necessary to prevent Winch and Evan getting into each other’s pants happily ever after. The story asks that you buy into a slightly absurd premise, , which might have worked better had it not been so thinly developed, serving more as filler in between the lengthy make out scenes.
However, those are merely my personal issues with the book and they won’t be a problem for everyone. I suspect that many will enjoy this book for precisely the reasons I didn’t. Spoiler Free Review 4.5 STARS out of 5 Genre: New Adult-Contemporary Romance Winch's body mirrors mine, and he wraps an arm around my waist. "It's getting cold. Come on inside, I swear to God, all we'll do is talk." He's the path lined with wildflowers, and I'm Red Riding Hood. I've been warned but I just can't resist the blossom and perfume that calls me over.
This book was full of push, grab and cling moments where these two knew it was best to push away. Yet they could do nothing but grab and cling to one another. It was sexy, addictive and UnPutDownable!
If you are Liz Reinhardt fan then you are well aware who Evan is from her Brenna Blixen series. For those not familiar Evan is Brenna's saucy out spoken best friend. Evan is beautiful, rich and unafraid to be herself. Yet her beauty nor her money has kept family turmoil and heartbreak from her. Heartbreak and her hot temper has brought her to this day.
Judgment day. Today she must account for her actions. BAD reactions to the drama that has invaded her life. One of those being the lost of her parents. Both physically and emotionally. They may not be dead but they sure have disconnected themselves from their one and only child. On top of that Rabin, Evan's ex-boyfriend cheated on her. Evan's bad decision to get drunk causes her to act out. An acting out leads Evan to the decision of burning her Rabin memorabilia at his grandparents orchard. Where he is suppose to be staying for the summer. **Face meet Palm** Needless to say the night ends with her being charged with Trespassing and Unintentional Arson.
The book starts with Evan nervously sitting outside of her courtroom, this is how she meets Winchester Youngblood aka Winch. He strikes up a conversation with her they are both attracted to each other but neither makes a move. In court Winch remains cool calm and collected. Evan on the other hand is beside herself after getting assigned community service and a stern warning she makes a mad dash for the exit. Winch stops her to let her know she needs to talk to her Parole officer before she leaves. After that they part ways only to meet again at their community service site.
Winch knows it can't work he's the Fall Guy. Even though Winch knows she can never fit in to his world or his family. He still wants a taste of what Evan has to offer. But one taste is not good enough. When these two come together it's EXPLOSIVE! The chemistry is undeniable. And Winch, the guy well know to always be calm, level headed, and rock steady begins to unravel. He loses control around Evan. And I loved every second of it!
The plot takes a detour to somewhere I never saw coming storyline wise. Hard decisions and sacrifices must be made.
Evan Vs. Family 'A few weeks ago, I knew exactly where I was going and what I was doing. Now every single thing I thought I knew for sure has been shaken. I don't know how I feel about my family my future my place my beliefs. The only thing I know for sure is that Evan has helped me change everything, and, whatever the hell my future might hold, I want her in it.' ~Winch's internal monologue
I do not want to give much away so I'll shut up now... This book is A MUST READ! Yes it was that good I love love loved it!!!! Liz gives you a great story, awesome characters and lot's of sexiness!
My Ratings Characters- Lovable Writing Style- My preferred cup of tea! Plot/Storyline- Excellent Steam Factor- High/Very Steamy Overall- I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! READ IT!!!! Now go forth and read. Then come tell us about it on Goodreads
*WARNING: This review might be more focused on HOT, STEAMY, DROOL-WORTHY Winch (if not the whole the review).
Evan Lennox met Winchester Youngblood just outside the courtroom on the day when they will both get sentenced for their wrong doings. *Evan’s case was due to Unintentional Arson and Trespassing (which was really because of a very stupid reason) and Winch was because of drunk driving.* They both get sentenced with community service. Just when Evan though he would meet the hot blue-eyed guy again, she meets him at the site of her first community service assignment. Evan was attracted to the hot-cold mysterious Winch. No matter how hard she tried, she can’t get him out of his head. (But who wouldn’t? seriously?) She made tons of assumptions as to why Winch doesn’t seem interested but nothing. She just couldn’t get him. But what Evan doesn’t know was Winch actually was feeling the same way although there are certain factors in Winch’s life that is making him hold back. The closer they get to each other, the more they couldn’t stay away from each other. Slowly, the wall that Winch built around himself was slowly crumbling down. Evan wanted to know what it was that was holding Winch back. When Winch finally laid all his cards on the table, Evan understood. He was the fall guy. He was always the backup guy of their family. She knew she would never be the one he chooses. But then again, Winch proved her wrong.
I seriously went BANANAS over this book!
I have read tons of books regarding forbidden love, but it was nothing like this. It was a rollercoaster of emotion and I loved every minute of it.
I want (if I could) personally hug and kiss Liz Reinhardt for making such a wonderful book. It literally took my breath away too much I couldn’t count it anymore.
Unlike The Secret of Ella and Micha (which I also love to death) the story of this book was a little more complicated. It dealt with choices. It dealt with choosing what you have to do, what you are expected and what you want to do. Will you choose what you want over your family? Will you choose the hard path but will make you happy or choose the easier path even though you know it will make you miserable?
Honestly, I didn’t really care much about Evan. It was a good thing that the POVs were alternating because if not I wouldn’t have finished this book. I liked Evan but there was a point that I felt that she has no sense of self-preservation. She was the go-getter type of girl. If she wants it, she goes and gets it even if eventually she’ll get hurt. But that was one of the things I admired about her. It’s kind of ironic though. The bad thing I noticed about her is the same thing I liked.
I want to dwell more on Winch! (my dream guy!) Hot, gorgeous and extremely enticing DELICIOUS, EDIBLE, SEDUCTIVE, TEMPTING Winch! I am seriously addicted to him. I kind of imagined he would look somewhat like this guy but with that sexy Hungarian accent:
Totally drool-worthy right?
Okay he’s drool-worthy totally the kind of guy I’d love to bang me so what next? He’s a lot more than just a pretty face. He was the type of guy you could really count on. I mean he wouldn’t be his family’s fall guy if he wasn’t right? This guy gave up on a lot of things for his family. He gave up half of his life for them who never gave a shit about him. He was the fix guy. He fixes his stupid older brother Remy’s screw-ups which I think was just really really wrong. I hated them for that. I was absolutely furious with his family all throughout the book. They were crappy parents.
I was SO ANGRY! They were supposed to let Remy fix his own issues. He made some very STUPID mistakes and he should be the one to pay for it, not anyone else. That family was just seriously fucked up. I WANTED TO PUNCH SOMEONE IN THE FACE!
EVAN + WINCH= HOT, SWEATY, DRAMATIC LOVIN’
I was surprised on how graphic all those hot scenes were and I enjoyed devoured every minute of it. There was just so much passion between the two of them.
There were a lot of sexy time but when the serious stuff was up, it was SERIOUSLY emotional. Even when they were doing their thing, you’ll see that there was still drama going on in their heads. It was just amazing. I loved hearing the alternating POV’s of these two but I mostly like hearing WINCH. Hey, it’s not being biased but I loved his POV because you’ll get to hear him as who he really is behind all that façade that he has on.
The ending was bitter sweet for me but I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. It was the perfect ending for me. Winch made the right decision with the help of Evan of course. I will end this review with a little spoiler. It is in Winch’s POV and it really touched me in so many ways it almost made me cry. I’ll put it in spoiler so it’s up to you guys if you’ll want to read it.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS! *for readers of New Adult books*
I’ve been so busy picking up the pieces for other people, and being around Evan, I’ve started realizing for the first time in a long time how much I want something for me.
When I first saw this book, even before I noticed that it was written by Liz Reinhardt, I saw the cover. Isn’t it gorgeous? What about the guy on the cover? He’s just classically handsome, at least in my humble opinion. I was really looking forward to reading this. I’m a fan of Liz’s Brenna Blixen series, though I hate to admit it, I still haven’t read the last book, yet. I was eager to read about Brenna’s BFF, Evan and her Hero, Winchester Youngblood.
“You’re the fall guy, Winch. You’re the guy they come to when no one else will stand up and take their medicine. And they come to you because you never make them stand up and take it.”
Winch, Winch, Winch. **SIGH** He was such a complex hero. Period. His loyalties have always been to his family. He’s their fall guy. He specializes in cleaning up messes and taking the heat off his older brother, Remy. Remy is in his own personal h e l l. To say Remy has issues, is a severe understatement. Whenever Remy gets into trouble, Winch is there to take the blame. When “House of the Rising Sun” plays on Winch’s phone, he knows Remy is in some sort of trouble. It doesn’t matter what Winch is doing, when that ringtone plays, Winch drops everything and runs to his brother’s aid.
Fuck this breakfast. Fuck this date, fuck this already long ass day following the shittiest night I’ve ever had. Fuck the truth, fuck believing in some fairytale happy ending. Fuck my responsibilities and fuck, fuck, fuck the fact that I just, no doubt, no questions asked, lost my shot at being with Evan Lennox.
Winch is a sexy and charming bad boy. Exactly the type Evan falls for. She knows better. She knows she should stay away, especially when he keeps leaving her panting and wanting more. God, the sexual frustration Winch leaves Evan time and time again was beyond frustrating. Ugh! But Evan wasn’t going anywhere. She’s stubborn and just when she thinks she has Winch figured out, “House of the Rising Sun” plays and Winch has to go. What the fuck is that all about? She is eager to find answers.
Pushing forward physically equals pulling away emotionally for Winchester.
Winch knows Evan is trouble. He likes to be in control, but with Evan, he’s nothing but. He should walk away and break it off with Evan, but he just can’t. He knows he’s in too deep now. Evan is opening his eyes to what life could be like without having to live under his family’s thumb. That’s dangerous thinking, but he’s determined to find a way to be with Evan and still make his family happy. Does a solution even exist?
As much as I really liked Evan’s character, Winch made the story. He’s extremely selfless and just wants to protect his family. However, his family is constantly pushing his limits and with Winch starting to realize the absurdity of some of their wishes, he’s ready to snap. When is it his turn to be happy?
I think fans of Liz Reinhardt will enjoy this story. Plus, this has a little more steam than the Brenna Blixen stories, which was a HUGE plus in my book. The only drawback with this story was the ending. Though happy, it seemed rushed. With all that tension between Winch and his family growing, the solution just seemed too simple, but that’s just my opinion. Anyway, if you decide to try this, you won’t regret it. Winch is to die for and I know you’ll easily fall for him, just like I did =)
I loved this book. Like tears in my eyes, smile on my face, lump in my throat loved it. I cannot believe I waited so long to read it! I think I’m officially addicted to dual POV books. I just love getting a look into the hero’s head.
Evan is such a great character. She is well aware of her flaws and she’s honest about the bad decisions she’s made in the past. She meets Winch, and she’s pretty sure that she’s going down the same path again. One that will lead to disaster, but she does it anyway.
”I believe in jumping over past hurts and letting love in.”
I was insanely impressed with her fortitude, and loyalty to Winch, even in the beginning. The obstacles certainly seemed insurmountable, but she put on her big girl panties and fought for what she wanted. I’ll be honest, I probably would have given up, but she never did.
”. . .I’m so sick of all of it. So sick of putting a sock in it, so sick of watching this family’s lies mutate and infect Winch and my chances with him. I’ve tried to be a lady. I’ve tried to keep my mouth shut and not judge and play the cool card, but it’s so not me. I’m not any of that. Whatever happens today, it’s going to get messy. Gloves off, no holds barred messy. I might as well jump in the mud pit and get my slinging in.”
I loved Winch too. I felt so bad for him. What a horrible role to get cast in. How horrifying to know your role in your family is to be the sacrifice, the fall guy. It was beautiful to see Winch, for the first time, fight for something he wanted just for him. I can’t even imagine how hard it was for him to change all those years of the same pattern repeating itself. He was such a sweetheart, and had all the amazing swoony words you could hope for, but making that change – for him, but also for Evan, was the most beautiful sign of his love.
”I think I’ll always be the fall guy, but I’m only falling with her, for her, into anything she wants because I know I can trust her with my future, with our future.”
I was worried FALL GUY would be a little too much for me. Too fast a connection made or even too many conflicts between the two. They both recognize those as pulling them apart but despite the same their helplessly drawn to each other. Now, them together was in turns scorching hot but also mind numbingly dramatic. Both go all in AND are terrified about perhaps having chosen the wrong thing. Too much, too fast, so the drama! It’s all there. Yet, I kept on reading (with one brow perpetually raised.) Simply because there’s something... uhm, something... I just don't know what.
Evan first made her appearance in SLOW TWITCH. She read exactly like the other guy in Brenna’s life: live hard, party harder, heed not the consequences of one’s actions. She deserved a story of her own. She gets hers here; we see why she is the why she is. Her reality seems to be that she’s alone, though dotes on by her grandparents, she’s basically on her own. So her issues range from feeling unwanted, unlovable etcetera, etcetera… leading her to do some pretty outrageous things, including accidentally setting fire to an orchard. This then leads to her meet Winchester Youngblood, a name *shakes head* that still sounds over the top in my head. He is mysterious man-boy. Man boy because he’s got the bucks and the car and the power but he’s also his issues.
I’d laugh at the push pull that takes place in this one if it weren’t so frustrating. He is shrouded in mystery and she’s hell bent on knowing all; add that the reveal could have gone laughably over dramatic, soap opera style. Mainly every time the word ‘family’ is mentioned in conjunction to his, it felt like it was capitalized. It had interesting moments, but I’ve said this before and it applies to FALL GUY as well:
Too much, too fast, so the drama!
(Still, the sexy times did get sexy.)
1.5/5
And so, continues my search for indie YA/NA contemps that aren’t over the top...
No avanzar.
I love Liz Reinhardt. I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably continue to say it as long as I read her books. She has a serious knack for nailing this New Adult genre, and I’ve loved everything of hers I’ve read. Fall Guy was no exception. We met Evan Lennox in the the third installment of the Brenna Blixen series, Slow Twitch. I loved her because she a perfect best friend for Brenna, and sort of a loose cannon. But she was a strong girl, and she meant well. I couldn’t wait to get to read her story. I knew it would be great.
Fall Guy picks up after Evan is sentenced to community service for her accidental arson (she was trying to burn memories of her sleaze ex, and started the entire pecan orchard on fire). She’s living with her Gramma and Grandaddy as her family has officially fallen apart. She’s in a new school and her best friend lives in rural New Jersey. Needless to say, she’s feeling lost and then she meets Winchester Youngblood. She notices something about Winch right away (he tries to console her at the courthouse, where he’s always awaiting punishment for his crime), and though both know they should stay away from the other, they can’t. They begin community service together and sparks fly. Oh, do some delicious sparks fly. There’s also plenty of secrets, trust issues, family interference and miscommunications.
I particularly loved getting both Evan and Winch’s POVs in this story. Liz does that so perfectly. Slow Twitch is like that and so is her collab book with Steph Campbell, Lengths. To get into both characters’ heads, and experience their thoughts and actions firsthand is perfection. The heat between these two was undeniable, and because it’s New Adult, we aren’t spared any details! ;) SCORE! The drama between them is heartbreaking and angsty, and will piss you off, but make you cheer for them too. Especially Winch! LOVE WINCH! He’s scrumptious. He’s tough and sweet. He knows how to push Evan more than anyone else, but at the same time, he has her heart in mind.
Another fantastic aspect of this book was we got a little more of Brenna! I love the hopeless romantic in her trying to steer Evan in the right direction where Winch is concerned. I will say, though, it made me SO SO anxious for a 4th Blixen book, because I’m pining for Jake Kelly again. SIGH. Winch definitely helped me get over missing Jake, though. I want to note that just because the kids are younger (Winch is 22, Evan is 18), does not mean there isn’t steam, potty mouths and lots of drama. There’s plenty. And then some.
I give this book 5 stars and highly recommend it. If you haven’t read any of Liz’s books before, you should get on that now. You can read my reviews of Double Clutch, Junk Miles, Slow Twitch and Lengths if you need more assurance that picking up one of her books is for you. I cannot wait to hear what we’ll be getting from Liz next. Although I’m sure she’s ready for a nap. ha. Because this is a Youngblood book, I know that we can assume we’ll be getting some more stories from this crazy family. I loved all Winch’s family members, so I’m sure they’ll be great reads, as well. In the meantime, though, make sure to pick up Fall Guy and also the rest of Liz’s books! You will not be disappointed.
After i started reading the book, i realized that it was a spin-off of sorts of a previous series of the author. So i'm writing this review on a stand alone POV.
The story begins with Evan going to court, where she is sentenced to community service, for arson (an accident, really). And in court she meets Winchester, that gives the bad boy aura and in the other hand a totally cooled aura. He is confusing, more to him that meets the eye, and the attraction between the 2 of them is undeniable.
However, they both are afraid to go to deep. Evan doesn't look for complicated, she had already too much drama in her life, she doesn't want another relationship one-sided, where she gives everything she is and don't receive the same in return. She is done with bad boys, that are always looking for trouble.
Winch is the fall guy. He is the one that solves every problem of his family, he is always the one that takes the fall. For what he does, he most show every time a cool attitude, never to show his emotions and feelings. Even to his family. So he doesn't want complicated too, he doesn't want to let go of his emotions, he wants to keep himself in check.
But when this 2 get together, it's like fireworks
"His arms are around me, his mouth crushes and sucks all over my body and, in the shadows of my room,in my bed, with the sound of the waves crashing outside the window,he kisses like kissing my skin is essential to his very existence."
...and not only that, they can talk to each other and connect. She is constantly challenging him and he is always try to show her to love herself.
But well i did had some problems with the story. Don't get me wrong, i loved the chemistry between this 2. And i actually liked a lot both of them, Evan is smart and sassy (and don't take bullshit, she does have a temper) and well Winch, is fun and intense. But they were parts of the story that just didn't clicked for me. He being the fall guy, and the whole dynamic with his family. I was just
They're really a dysfunctional family. I just couldn't get it, so it was a turn off for me.
Thank you so much for writing such a breathtaking story.
Sincerely,
Morgan
Fall Guy, the first novel in a brand new companion series by Liz Reinhardt, is the perfect book for "mature" young adults. It's a fun and sexy emotional roller coaster filled with entertaining, comical characters that demand your attention. Told from Winch and Evan's perspectives, Fall Guy is a MUST READ!
Evan Lennox was first introduced to Liz Reinhardt's fans in the Brenna Blixen series. As soon as I met Evan, I automatically wanted more of her character. Brenna, the main character of the Brenna Blixen series, is a fabulous character, but Evan definitely stole some of the spotlight. But whether you have read the Brenna Blixen series or not, you will fall hard for Evan in Fall Guy. She's definitely main character worthy. She's a wild child with a good heart. She's not a "bad" child; she's just a little rough around the edges. She's feisty. She out-spoken. She truly is a captivating character.
Winchester Youngblood *Swoon* is an amazing guy. His family is crazy. They don't follow the law or the same rules as everyone else. They live by their own code and standards. As the second oldest child, Winch is responsible for cleaning up behind his family. His older brother Remington is basically a screw up. Remington is constantly getting into trouble and it's Winch's job to go behind him and take care of things, which means that a lot falls on Winch's shoulders. But Winch is loyal to his family so he feels like it's his responsibility.
Winch and Evan's love story is an emotional roller coaster. Their relationship is a lot of push and pull mixed with a lot of spice and heat. Evan and Winch are similar in many ways, but their lives and responsibilities pull them in completely different directions. They are attracted and drawn to each other, but how can they make a relationship work when everything and everyone is trying to pull them apart?
I gave Fall Guy (A Youngblood Book) by Liz Reinhardt 4 STARS. I strongly encourage mature young adults to read this novel ASAP!
I'm not positive yet, but I have a feeling that all of the Youngblood siblings are going to get their own novel. There are five siblings in total: Remington, Winchester (Fall Guy), Benelli, Ithaca, and Colt. The Youngblood family is crazy but highly entertaining. I look forward to reading the next story in the Youngblood series!
Oh goodness! Liz Reinhardt! You did it! You finallydid it! You made me fall in love with one of your books! Woot Woot! And I actually loved the characters!
Fall Guy. Fall Guy. Fall Guy.
Damn. I was not expecting the ride this book took me for. I was damn well shocked at the end because I was pretty distracted going into it. I wasn't really focused and then BAM! I was zapped into the story. I was battling my instant like of Winchester just like Evan was. I didn't know if he was that bad boy with a soft heart or just a plain old bad boy pretending to be a southern gentleman. I was afraid to give my heart over but like with Evan, it took five minutes and he had it tucked all snug in the palm of his hand.
The story is told in both Evan's and Winchester's POVs. I just love those alternating boy/girl POVs. I love to get into both individuals heads about each interaction.
I hand over some files to and her eyes meet mine, all cool and sweet like a snow-cone in July.
"You're welcome, ma'am." My head whips up at the ma'am. Not that I haven't heard that word spilled like sticky sweet syrup from a thousand mouths of a thousand boys who've been born and bred to use it everyday. There's something about this boy, the way that word just slides off his tongue, buoyed with cautious respect and elegant pleasure. Like he loves saying the word. Like his lips weigh the worth of it.
I just felt compelled to continue on with the story. What the heck is Winch hiding? What the hell is wrong with his family? Why doesn't he see the harm they cause him? I wanted all the answers in a matter of seconds and that just wasn't happening. Evan had to coax the truth out of him, make him trust and have faith in her. The struggle Winch had with letting go was so frustrating! I wanted to curse him! I did, I think a few times....but I was cheering for him regardless. Open up, Winch! I'm too damn curious! A little at a time we were let in. AND OMEGA! OMEGA! THE FREAKING THINGS THIS BOY CAN SAY AND DO WHEN HE JUST LETS LOOSE! Each time, I fell more and more for Winchester. Goodness! The loyalty that boy has! The things he went through, the things his family put on his shoulders to carry the weight. Every single family member was piled on top, sitting on his strong shoulders while he balanced on a unicycle, tottering along like some kind of circus act! I wanted to slap some sense into his parents! He was what? Twenty-two or something? And still he was being controlled in that way! And Remington. The guy was pretty funny but damn it if he wasn't just the saddest thing I've read about. The whole family enabled him, when he fucked up there was Winch to cover for him and he let it happen, his family let it happen! Ugh! I get so frustrated just thinking about that family! Whom attend mass and speak of manners and respect!?!? Are you kidding me?! It's unbelievable the things people trick themselves into thinking. What's right and what's wrong? I can guarantee most (if not all) of the things they practice in that home are WRONG! Unbelievably wrong. Un-be-lievable!
Evan! Oh holy shit on a muffin! How much I like this girl! I LOVE her! She is so much better a character than Brenna! I actually cant really stand Brenna. Just everything she does irritates me to no end. I found Evan a big relief. I'm really sad that there wasn't a whole series wrote on her instead. I'm literally bummed out. :( *sigh* She puts a sexy little hurtin' on Winchester like you wouldn't believe. I was so rooting for this girl. She knew what she was doin'! I kind of would have liked to see her go up against that pesky little Lala. That would have been something interesting!
Their relationship is a struggle. They have a hard time just figuring out if their relationship can last to the next second when they really just want to be together for as long as they can and hoping all the while that it's gonna be forever. Obstacles get in their way. They weigh the worth of their love, the fight, the sacrifice to be together.
Now my heart is desperate in my chest, like a bird crashing into a window over and over again, confused that it can't get to what it sees and wants, and willing to kill itself in the attempt to remedy that.
And the passion! The sex! HOLY MOTHER OF LUST! I was drenched in sweat. My heart, my body were exerting so much energy in the attempt to NOT get worked up. Winch got to me. He got me ALL over. Goodness! He spoke his language during sex. Whispered sweet promises (sexy things that we really aren't savvy to but know it's freaking hotter than a wildfire in July) in Hungarian. If you're not creaming your pants now, just wait. The BEACH HOUSE will knock your knickers off.
I could go on all day long but I'm just going to leave you with the knowledge of all that, the fact that this is IN FACT a FIVE STAR review, and a little bit of this: I'll spend the rest of my life falling as far and deep and hard as my heart will let me go in love with this perfect, crazy girl who taught me to let go and hold on. I know in that minute I'll be Evan's fall guy until the day I die, and my future, for the first time in my life, is an always I can't wait to fall into.
Reading this book was like watching a horror movie. Like jumping into the frigid lake when a cute boy asks you to.
Basically, what I'm saying is that reading this story was painful, but I JUST. COULDN'T. STOP.
Can you tell me what kind of story needs to use 98 similes in it to get its point across?
This one, apparently.
Ninety-eight. Yes, I counted. Because that's what I do. Also, let it be known that I let a few slide. So, let's round up and say there were 100 similes used in Fall Guy. And, abooooooooooout, 2 of them were necessary. If even. And of the 100 that were used, I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say a solid 83% of them didn't even make sense.
Sometimes similes can be used to create a mood in your book. To give your characters voice. To set yourself apart and be unique.
Other times, they can be so overabundant, so misused, so heavy in the text that they do nothing but weigh your book, your words, and your characters down until that's all that the readers notice.
Which, honestly, is sad. Because without all those (completely and totally unnecessary) similes, this book could've been something great. In fact, I'd venture to guess I might even have rated it as high as 4.5 stars.
Alas, we didn't get a book that was edited down with all the extra shit chopped from it. We got a word heavy book that was in serious need of some trimming.
Okay, so besides the need for heavy trimming (and editing), let's talk about the plot of the book. After all, for 2k tiny iPhone pages, there had to be a damn good plot to make me keep reading, right? And there was. That's one thing I love about NA novels is that they're new and fresh. Something different and something that I crave in my books because I love being surprised by what I read. And this really was such a fresh take on, well, it was basically a modern tale Romeo and Juliet, if you wanna get right down to it.
The characters in it were fresh and fun, and though I wanted to hate some of their choices (and though I was frustrated and irritated with some of them), I couldn't help but love them. (well, except Winch's parents) The author really did a great job of creating three-dimensional characters, even with the secondary characters, giving them all their individual voices and making them stand out.
And the relationship between Winch and Evan was raw and real and passionate, and probably my most favorite thing about the book.
Besides the overuse (and blatant abuse) of the similes, some other things rubbed me wrong about the book. For one thing, Evan never seemed like she was in high school. I think she acted much older than she was--her entire life was ran as though she was in college. In my opinion, that was a misstep by the author. I think she could've easily made this college-aged and not have changed much of the story, and I think it would've been more believable.
Also, it meandered. A lot. That's another aspect of this book that would've benefited from having a professional editor's eyes on it. This book could've easily--easily--been half the length. I mean, take out the similes and it's down 89,000 words, anyway.
Okay, my snark is getting away from me. But if I've said it once, I've said it five katrillion times: IF YOU ARE SELF-PUBBING, FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY IN THE WORLD, HIRE A GODDAMN EDITOR. A real one. Not your friend that does it because s/he knows the difference between their/there/they're, but a real one that can get tough and red pen the shit out of your work to cut through the crap and only leave the best shining through. Because, really, isn't that what every author should want their book to be? The best it possibly can be?
Like I said, if that had been done, I predict I would've given this bad boy 4.5 stars. As it stands, though, having to wade through all the BS to find the good story underneath (not to mention double the time in reading), 3 stars is the best I can do.
WOW Liz Reinhardt just rocked my world. I loved Evan and Winch there are the perfect couple. I even love Winch more than Saxon which is saying a lot. Fall Guy is my favourite new adult contemp romance this year. When is book 2 releasing???????
"Lo que él no se da cuenta es que yo ya estoy parada en el fondo, esperando para atraparlo. Y nunca fallo" El libro es genial pero sobre todo AMO a Evan, en serio, es una genia! Y necesito un libro de Andre e Ithaca, por que realmente, amé a estos dos <3
I love anything Liz Reinhardt writes. Seriously. She could come out with a book that's called Riding the Waves of Post-Menopause Depression and I'd think it's the most brilliant book out there. What?! How's that possible? It's simple. Her writing is addictive. You start on page one and there's no way you'll be able to put the book down. She's able to intertwine an amazing plot, seriously addictive characters, with a romance so edgy, steamy, and real that it equals the perfect combination for a TOP READ!
The characters she creates are always an instant hit for me. I'm picky when it comes to characters. I don't want to read about a meek, shy girl who constantly doubts her looks and falls for the wrong guy. And I DON'T want to read about a brooding, sultry dude that is more hot-n-cold than a girl PMS'ing. Her female characters hold so much strength and vulnerability. I feel like Evan Lennox is a girl that any of us could know. That's how real she feels!
Let's go through the list if you don't believe me. Evan's confident? Check. Evan is a smart ass? Check. Evan's emotional? Check. Evan has issues that are REAL? Check. Check. CHECK!
Let's go to Winchester Youngblood. That name gives me the good chills. You have them too!! (Look at your arms... they're covered in goosebumps!) That name just makes me instantly think that the Youngblood's would be rubbing shoulders with a Kennedy or Rockefeller. From the first scene you're going to be wondering about Winch and all the secrets that he's with holding from the world. He's so completely taken with Evan that he battles his instincts to remain loyal to his family, or for the first time, remain loyal to his heart.
The cover is perfect. The cover says it all. Can't you just picture Evan grabbing Winch's face and telling him to "Let. The. Hell. Go."?
It's VERY rare for me to say this... but the realistic drama in Fall Guy kept me hooked. Liz doesn't rely on the heat between Evan and Winch to keep this book going. You'll keep turning the page because you wanna know what's happening, and going on with both families, and you WANT to know how it will effect both Evan and Winch!! Run from this post. Hurdle over your children to your kindle, nook, iPad, whatever. After you download FALL GUY, fall onto your couch (get what I did there? Get it?) and enjoy the amazing writing!!
It's just a known fact that after a Liz Reinhardt novel, I will NOT be reading anything for a few days. When you're in a post book coma as good as Winchester Youngblood... why ruin that high?
I really love Liz's work. All of her characters are just fantastic. They all feel like real people to me and someone that I would know and care about and just want to simply hang out with and be friends.
This latest book is no exception. I just fell in love with Evan and Winch. They were both so flawed and real and I just loved that about them. I loved that they truly needed each other. They needed to save each other, but they also needed to save themselves, for themselves in order to be all they could be for each other too. And that made them feel so real to me.
I think this by far, is my favorite book that Liz has written. It just really hit home for me for whatever reason. I felt everything that Evan and Winch were going through and I connected with them and really ended up caring about them.
I made the unfortunate mistake of starting this one the same day that I started another fabulous read and therefore I was really torn between which book to read at any given moment. If it weren't for that though, I seriously would have read this in one sitting, it was that good. I was pretty hooked after the first chapter and did end up giving this one all of my attention, it demanded it from me and I was helpless to argue.
So be warned, make sure you have time on your hands before you start this because even if you don't, you aren't going to get anything else done that day.
I really love how Liz unraveled the mystery surrounding not only why Evan is the way she is (party girl central) but also all of Winch's secrets as well. And not only his secrets, but his families too. I really loved how loyal and strong he was. He was the perfect case of the bad boy not really being all he appeared to be on the outside.
By the time I was done reading this, I was so incredibly proud of both Winch and Evan. I can't even tell you how proud. They both turned out to be a whole lot stronger than either one imagined they could be. They knew what they wanted and the grabbed for it and held on tight.
I am so sad this is over. Really sad. I want more Winch and Evan.
Liz, this truly was a beautiful coming of age story about doing what is right. Believing in yourself and making those hard decisions that are never easy but are the ones that are best for us. For making sure that we follow our dreams and make them happen. And I thank you for writing is so wonderfully and meaningfully. For creating two characters that will forever live with me.
Fall Guy is a fun read. Evan and Winch's story is crazy and complicated. Although it's engaging, it's also aggravating, but you can't help but hope these two will get it together.
Evan Lennox loves bad boys. She attracts them like moths to a flame, but she always gets burned and the last boy to break her heart was the reason for her recent legal problems and accidental arson which landed her in Court. Here she meets Winchester for the first time. They are assigned Community Service together and she falls hard and fast for the new bad boy in her life.
Winchester Youngblood is the "fall guy" for his crazy ass family. I'm not entirely sure what his family's business is, but I am sure it's not entirely legal. Winchester and his siblings are all named after gun makers. That right there gives you your first hint that his parents are nuttier than squirrel shit. Winch's older brother, Remington err Remy is a major screw up. He has a serious drinking problem and always manages to get himself in trouble and poor Winchester always has to pick up the peices for him and take the blame. What I loved about Winch was his love for Evan. She was everything to him, he was crazy about her. What I hated about Winch was that he let his family's problems rule his life, even to the point of almost losing Evan forever. He let his father run his life and his father let him take the blame for Remy's crimes. I hated his parents. They did not give a crap about Winch's future or what would happen to him so long as he would cover for his drunken loser brother. Evan is the best thing that happened to him and she finally helped him locate his balls and stand up for himself.
This is a New Adult Contemporary Romance and I would recommend it to ages 17+ for strong sexual content.
I couldn't agree more. I really liked Evan's character, she seemed like a strong girl who'd made a mistake and realized the error of her ways. Enter Winchester Youngblood, I wanted to like this guy but I couldn't seriously I tried but he let me down over and over again.
He had this unwavering loyalty to to his family and felt as if he owed them something. Seriously they said jump and he was like "how high?". And whenever he's brother was in trouble he would immediately drop everything and come to his rescue. I don't even want to get started on the brother, he's older brother might I add. What a mess! Seriously this guy had no sense of responsibility, he was like a baby and everyone had to walk on eggshells around him! He made me sick! And whenever Evan would try and point this out Winchester would just stand up for him and his family! I'm sorry to say this but Winchester was just plain weak, Evan had to initiate everything! Even when he's father was being unreasonable, she stood up for him and only then did he find the guts to say something! As for the rest of the family, they all had loud opinions when it came to everything else except when it had something to do with Winch. He was like their freaking babysitter cleaning up after them! God I felt so sorry for this guy at times. I was seriously exasperated the entire time I read this book, I have some real respect for Evan and what she put up with because I found myself saying "Eff him Evan he's not worth it!" But she stuck by him through it all,
I don't think I want to read Benelli's story because I really didn't like her. I gave this story three stars because even though I didn't like what happened I still had to know the story, I was still interested and that's huge for me because if I don't like a book I abandon ship no questions asked.
Okay...So I have to say I really enjoyed this book. I fell in love with Evan in Slow Twitch. She is a strong character but still has her insecurities. I also liked how she stood up to Winch and put him in his place. Winch was fabulous, but i did want to smack him around a couple of times and tell him to wake up!!!!! I thought the secret that Winch was hiding in the beginning was an interesting one...I haven't read a book with this issue before. Let's just say I understand the title of the book better now that I have read it. I was really happy with the ending of this book. I was glad to see Remy was going to get the help he needed and that things seemed to work out for Winch and Evan. I truly love Liz Reinhardt's books....she truly loves her HEA:) I did find all of the Youngblood names interesting....Remington, Winchester, Benelli, Ithaca, and Colt. All the boys names are named after brand names of guns....hum, interesting right?? Anyway I would say that if you have read the Brenna Blixen books then you should definitely read this book as well. Brenna does make an appearance. Although this book can also be read as a stand alone. Can't wait to read more from this series:)
It started well, girl meets boy, instant attraction and the story was going somewhere. But the author' s penchant for use of similes and metaphors was at some places distracting and I found myself zoning off and having to go back and re-read the page, therefore the story wasn't flowing as easy as I would have liked. The dialogue between Evan and Winchester was a bit hard to believe, they came across very mature and older than their age. This is Evan after meeting Winchester for the first time:
I smell him, and it's a smell that's not part of the deep, salty musks of this area. It's clean and fresh and sweet. Something foreign and intoxicating. It smells like clover, wet with a sheen of overnight dew.
....and few pages later Winchester describing Evan:
I stay by her side, catching the scent of cotton candy and magnolia, and just a little undercurrent of ash
Gah...it seemed a bit far fetched, I know that the smell is one of the primary senses, but these two are teenagers, I don't think they'd stop and analize the way they smell in proximity of each other.
The story was dragging a bit in places and nothing was really happening for a while, but once it's started going (at around 48%) it got interesting and engaging.
This is a story about families, the strong ties and loyalties that can both keep you behind or help you learn from yours and others' mistakes and move forward, on this case depending on which family you belong to. This is a story about finding true love and discovering yourself and your strengths. I loved Evan, she came across as funny, smart and mature (admittedly at times more than possible for someone that young). Winch, was very sexy, sensitive and very loyal to his family and I felt sorry for him to have to keep the burden of his family's secrets. He gave this air of calm and in control and for a very long time had put himself in a role where it was expected that he'd sacrifice himself for others' mistakes. This went to the extent that he'd given up his life, his future and never even indulged himself in any dreams.
As Evan and Winch get to know each other, acknowledging the attraction between them, admitting to themselves and each other how wrong they are for each other, their love grows and gets stronger and you can't help but hope that they finally would get together without any more obstacles. The make out and love scenes are extra hot, these two might be young but they come across as very experienced lovers.
We see Winch conflicted, divided between his feeling for Evan and his duties to his family, what is expected of him. He tries, and he tries hard. Evan is a very good influence and her patience and determination helped him to come out of his shell. I will never break your heart. I will never hurt you. I might fuck up, I might not be perfect, but I'll never hurt you, Evan. You have my word."
Did I mention I loved Evan? She was feisty, sexy, and not only once was she whiny or needy. She did have her moments of self doubt but she never really gave up on her love for Winch. She genuinely cared for him and while it would have been easy to ask him to choose between her and his family, she never did. She wanted him to cut the ties with his family for the right reasons, to set himself free. A guy who's ready to fall because he's between a rock and a cliff's edge. And, as his body clings close to mine and shudders right along with me, I know he thinks this is the end. That this is his last grab before the long, lonely descent. What he doesn't realize is that I'm already standing at the bottom, waiting to catch him. And I never miss.
It was amazing to see her coax him, one step at a time, to open up, to let go and start thinking for himself and his future. She stood up to his family, despite how dysfunctional and intimidating they were.
Page after page we see a different Winch. He changed before our eyes, from a cocky, calm and controlled young man, to a boy who was afraid to let himself go and live life like anyone his age is entitled to. It takes a near tragedy and tough love from Evan to complete his transformation. The little game that Evan used to play always, sometimes, never, well in the end, his answer is without any hesitation:
I'll always love my family. I'll see them sometimes. I'll never be under their thumb again.
There were some very sweet moments and I totally felt for Winch. He was robbed of his dreams and his chance of living a normal life. I enjoyed the last part of the book the best. While at first we felt frustrated, angst for his "it's complicated " life, the book ends in high notes of hope.
" I know in that minute I'll be Evan's fall guy until the day I die, and my future, for the first time in my life, is an always I can't wait to fall into."
Fall Guy - The guy who is left with the blame for a crime, regardless of whether they were involved or not.
"I will never break your heart. I will never hurt you. I might fuck up, I might not be perfect, but I'll never hurt you, Evan. You have my word."
I have the Brenna Blixen Series but I haven’t found the time to read it because I think the story was too complicated for me and it’s just long, but after reading Fall Guy I come to think that I should definitely read that one because it’s a spin-off to this story and the main character there Brenna Blixen was the main character’s best friend here, so I want to see how Evan was like on those stories.
Evan Williams Lennox comes through a hard family drama what with her parents not giving her much attention and she’s off living with her loving grandparents. Top it all off with her boyfriend cheating with her ex-best friend, it definitely got out of hand and burning stuffs that reminds her of him lands her into court.
Evan was a smart, sassy and funny character. She’s the bad-party-girl that ends up being a good one. She’s a very compose character yet has those distinct qualities that makes her unforgettable at the same time likeable.
Winchester Tobar Youngblood is - freaking' hot – and is whatever anyone needs. By disturbing the peace and public intoxication he also ends up in court. But he isn’t really that guy. He's just the good guy caught on a very bad situation.
Okay, my first thought of him was this really bad-boy persona but he really isn’t that. Winch surprises me with him being responsible, dependable and as what I’ve said whatever anyone needs (especially to his family) . He puts his families need in front of his own and didn’t see that it was so wrong until Evan lands on his life. I really do feel bad for him being obligated to do stuffs for his family I feel bad for him being obligated to do stuffs for his family, I know you should do things for your family but with Winch it became a responsibility an obligation that could ruin his own life.
When these two meet, sparks immediately fly. The attraction with them was potent and deep so when they end up on the same community service the attraction grew more. Their flirting was really steamy and swoony to read and Winch's resistant to Evan's little flirting was so cute.
Things between them are so complicated; Evan isn’t sure if she wants to risk and get hurt by a guy again and Winch was uncertain if he wants his happy ever after with Evan or risks it all for his family.
There are parts that these two made me teary eyed. The times when Winch leaves Evan to go to his family almost breaks my heart. I know he doesn’t want to leave her in the middle of their date but he cant also left behind his family’s needs. The game Never, Always, Sometimes is one of the most hitting scenes in the story. I admit, it sounds easy but the game itself was obviously hard at the same time very much fitting for the story.
In all, Fall guy is a good read. The story was unique and very much unpredictable.I'll definitely find more time to read Liz Reindhart’s other stories! Yay! :)
I was super excited about getting this book. I'm a huge fan of the Brenna Blixen Series, where we met Evan. I adored her immediately and wished on a star for a book of her own. Wish granted! WOOHOO!
Evan is smart, sassy, and resilient. This girl has come through some pretty bad family drama. Her parents have never given her much attention and she's been betrayed by her old best friend. When her ex-BFF sleeps with Evan's boyfriend, naturally Evan reacts badly. As a result, she has to go to court. There she meets Winch. They both get assigned to do community service. The attraction between them is deep. The problem is that Evan isn't sure she wants to take the risk and get hurt by a guy again.
Winchester Youngblood is not as he appears. While you think he's a typical bad boy, he really isn't. Winch is responsible, sensitive, loyal, and swoony. He falls hard for Evan and is determined to make her see that his feelings for her are real. The biggest obstacle getting in the way is his family. Winch feels obligated to take care of his family. When they call, he runs. This becomes a big issue for he and Evan. Ultimately, he needs to decide if having a future with Evan is more important than risking it all for his family.
Liz always sucks me into these characters lives. I feel like I know them and root for them to be happy. This story, while connected to the Brenna Blixen Series, has a very different feel. I loved that. We're introduced to a whole new cast of characters that intrigued me and left me wanting to know more. So, I was thrilled to hear that we will learn more about the Youngbloods. There is definitely much to be discovered. I loved Winch's siblings and want them all to find a happy ending.
Just want to mention that we do get to see little bits of Brenna. I love that girl and was thrilled to see her relationship with Evan continues to be strong. Although, it made me homesick for Jake Kelly. *sigh*
So, my final thoughts on Fall Guy....definitely a WIN in my opinion. I loved every minute of this book and was sad to see it end. My only consolation was knowing that perhaps I will get a glimpse of Evan and Winch in the upcoming Youngblood books.
This book gave me a great love story, a new beginning, added with a little bit of spice. I highly recommend it!
I've never read Liz Reinhardt before so as a first book this is a good read.
This is the story of Evan and Winchester who meet in dubious circumstances, in a court room of all places. They both feel an instant connection to each other but it takes a couple of chapters for them to come together, both intrigued by the other.
Evan got herself in a bit of a bind and needs to do community service, where she meets up with Winch again. After a little bantering they get along really well. When they start on a date however it goes spiralling. That's pretty much how their relationship ends up going throughout the book.
Winchester comes from an old Hungarian family where family ties mean everything. And he's the fall guy. He covers up all his family's little indiscretions but none more so than his brother Remington who's going through a somewhat troublesome time himself. Again and again Winchester has to bail Remy out of trouble and more often than not he's with Evan when he gets the notorious phone calls.
So is the story any good? Well as far as New Adult goes I'm happy to say I enjoyed the story. Thankfully there was a really terrible history of abuse which seems to be the theme for most New Adult books I've read. And so this one felt like a bit of fresh air. Was it believable? Again, yes. I've read a few reviews where readers have said that the Youngblood family moral code is a little far fetched but where I live there are many foreign families who live their lives just like this one. They strive to keep their family and connections together and are fiercely protective of each other, and everyone else are just outsiders.
While I enjoyed the story there were episodes where the purple prose popped up and didn't altogether make sentences easy to read. Lots of descriptions using the word 'like a...'.
This book does contain a small amount of sex. It's not that explicit compared to other NA books I've read but its there, and again is believable within the story. The only thing I did find was that Evan got a little too gropey but she is only 17/18 years old so maybe that's all part of her character package.
All in all I liked it, I'd certainly read more from this author.
I found this author recently, when I bought Lengths (which she co-wrote) and really enjoyed it. I decided to pick this book up and I wasn't disappointed. Fall Guy is a quick read that introduces you to some really interesting and flawed characters. When I finished it, I went looking to see when the sequel would come out.
Evan Lennox is the female lead and she was different from most we read about in YA/New Adult lately. She's not a shy, bookish girl who is beautiful but thinks she is plain. Evan knows she's gorgeous. She also has a bad history of making huge mistakes and she ends up in court after accidentally on purpose setting fire to an orchard at her ex-boyfriend's house.
At court she runs in to Winchester Youngblood (I'm not usually a fan of off-the-wall names, but this one really grew on me). Winch is also in court and both he and Evan end up getting stuck in community service together. While in community service, they start up a relationship which doesn't go how either of them planned.
I love how kick-ass Evan is. She knows what she wants and goes after it. When Winch starts acting like a jerk, she calls him on it and doesn't take his bullshit (which I appreciate, considering how common it is these days for authors to romanticize controlling stalkerish asshole behavior).
Winch is a complicated guy with an even more complicated family. I found that whole dynamic fascinating and I'm very much looking forward to learning more about this family in future books. I don't want to say too much about his family because it will give away a lot of the plot, so I'll just leave it at that.
The writing was a little stilted in places, but overall it was decent. I flew through this book while on vacation last weekend and I carried my Kindle around with me everywhere until I finished it. Though it wasn't perfect, it was compelling and it's hard for me to badly rate a book that I got so immersed in.
Like the rantitude for which I'm about to rant is going to get on the extreme side.
I like the book, I really did, I liked Evan, I liked Winch. I liked them both together. I liked their relationship, sure, it moved a little fast, but I liked them.
What I fucking couldn't stand was Winch's attitude about his family.
Like are you fucking serious right now? Winch was like a fucking rag doll in his family. I didn't find his whole "I'll do anything for my family" bit endearing, I found it annoying as fuck. His family basically brainwashed him into believing that the life he lived was so great and was the way to do things.
NO.
Shooting horses and breaking femurs and taking community service for Remy is not how a family is. And I am getting so irritated with this whole "they're my family so I have to do everything for them" thing in every book, is beginning to really tick me off.
When Remy hit his head on the table and his parents didn't call an ambulance because they didn't want Remy to get a tox screen? I almost fucking lost it.
But how no matter what, Winch never really exploded at his family, that pissed me off. I fucking lost it at that. Winch should have fucking yelled and screamed and punched his family out.
They. Pissed. Me. Off. So. Much.
I get the whole it's hard to choose between family and the person you love thing. But it's different when it's a family that's loyal and good, not when it's a family that's ridiculous and fucked up. A family that makes Winch almost go to jail for Remy and always be the one to take care of everyone. The decision shouldn't be difficult at that point.
I could literally rant on and on about how much his relationship with his family infuriated me, but I would just be repeating myself over and over again.
I liked the book. I liked Evan and Winch. I liked them by themselves. I just didn't like the relationship he had with his family.
On one hand, I absolutely love this book. Love Winch <3 and admire Evan most times :D Winch is a strong character and I damn near drown my phone with my drools when he went to fight and took off his shirt? All tat up and just blazing sexy? I was squeeing like an idiot lol. Evan was the kind of girl who wasn't innocent and didn't hide that fact - I liked the realness of it all. Love how she struggled with seeing herself worth it and with Winch getting all angry and arguing with her when she comments on her self-worth. *clucks tongue* Mi gusta <3
His dedication was so powerful, blinded by family and doing what he has to do to save them, that I hurt every time he said he has to go, or tell Evan how he's the only one who can do it. I hated his parents for letting him always take the fall just because he's calm and collected. No parent should feel the need to throw one kid under a bus just to save the other (when in all honestly they were doing nothing to save the other).
Pride can be a foolishly ugly thing =/
What I didn't like was the constant push and pull, where 95% of the time, that push and pull was irrelevant or happened so fast...it was irrelevant. It got pretty wordy too - especially during the sex scenes which completely took away from it. Sometimes when they were making a point it felt so confusing I was like...waaa?? Wasn't necessary or it just wasn't put out in a way to impact the situation.
What I absolutely love was Winch's accent and the way he'd switch to his native languae :3 Just freakin' haaawwwt <3
All in all, this book was okay but I just felt it could have been way more better.
