However, I personally have found that the books tend to be incredibly slow to pick up, and read similar to how LOTR movies appear to those who can't help but notice that the majority is simply walking. the romaces are slow burning, and the main character is the over done "chosen one" type with abilities that are magnified when it is most convienent. All that being said, Nesta's story is relatable. Nesta's rage, her greif and guilt and self loathing is real. Much more tangible than the luck that her youngest sister accidentally stumbled upon. If it were not for fairly necessary context, I would reccomend this book alone for others to read. Out of a series I am finishing simply because I have started it, this is my favorite of the books. this book on its own is within my top 5 for this entire year so far, and if Mass continues the last of the series in the same manner as this book I will happily read the remaining books to come. ...more

This book took place over the course of maybe about a week. It was a little difficult to grasp how much happened in such a short time period. However, I find myself deeply enjoying this series and such a fresh take on fairytales of princesses and beasts. I was especially intruiged by the chapter from Queen Levana's point of view and wonder if later in the series that might be more explored. ...more

This book bridges topics like feminism, sexuality, cross dressing, transgender biology, prejudice and patriarchy; without the unfortunate political nature becoming to all emcompassing. This book talks about those topics and seemlessly ties them into the fabric of the universe while still telling this young woman's story of growing up without a mother in the 1950's while trying to further her education in a world that wasn't as welcoming of women who were content with a domestic life, let alone women who actively chose to be larger than life. I recommend this book to anyone who can read. It is heartbreaking and beautiful....more

They get a little graphic as far as I am concerned, and it’s just not my thing. This book had just the right amount of detail in the intimate scenes, and was highly relatable both in relation to growing up queer and wanting the approval of your family. I loved it and look forward to more from this author. ...more

The books description was very vague and mysterious, and things didn't really add up. The vivid descriptions of how pain feels were sometimes so grand it was difficult to tell immediately that it was a metaphor and not something that might actually be happening. The pain felt by Cadence is so profound, and so deep that I was repeatedly in tears as she remembered summer fifteen. My heart aches for her, and for her family. I cried and cried through the entire ending and I would certainly read this book again. ...more

There are so many small nuances the author included about the discrimination the short stringers face and even the smaller motivations behind those discriminatory choices made by the long stringers. I loved the connections between characters that never met, though I truly wish Amie had been able to find out about Gertrude’s love and know just what kind of an impact her (Gertrude’s) love had and how her prayer card ended up. I feel like Amie would have really loved that. The glimpses of genuine compassion and pure good deeds, along with the inevitable tragic deaths made me cry repeatedly, but because of those and just how well this book is written it’s very easily become one of my favorites and I will be recommending it....more

I worried in the beginning that this book would irritate me with the lack of depth, and maturity that was needed to make this a truly great read. I was mistaken. As time moves forward in the story, character developement improves leaps and bounds and you are quickly taken through greif, love, and the self discovery of "just some cyborg mechanic" as she finds out many discoveries about herself and her country. The big "twist" in the plot was not much of a twist, I saw it coming from the first mention of this grand secret. I am a little disappointed that the secret wasn't less predictable but I do understand its importance to the story. Overall, a very good, and quite quick read. This book is great for fairytale and distopian readers and it creates a great view at what a fairytale would look like after a 4th world war, during a global pandemic. ...more

The way she got into the mind of the villian in this story and made the truth seem questionable through every moment was amazing. (view spoiler)[ the amount of child abuse in this story was quite unsettling and I feel there definetly should have been much more of a warning. (hide spoiler)] I found it quite interesting how the suspense and thrill of this story also entertwined with the sort of twisted love story it also was. I actually listened to this as an audio book, and typically I cannot focus but this story had my attention from the beginning, even though the story telling was a bit stiff and I had to try not to giggle a bit at women immitating men's voices in the story. The way the novel ends though! Its a must read, and now that I have gone through the audio book I will be buying a hard copy....more

I had guessed the girl's name pretty quickly, but was confused quite a bit at how Wiley fit into the story. I feel that some of the ending wrapped up a little too messily, like letting jackson out of the tool shed. but otherwise, i am obsessed. this is a book i will read again and again and recommend to everyone....more
