Sabrina | 9 comments Just recently I put 'The Last Summer' on my TBR list. It looks really good. I'll have to add it to my challenge list as well.

A Noble Place By Anne Brear is a good one to read for this challenge. Also Beyond Innocence by Joanna Lloyd. These both take place in Australia but I was unable to find book/author on this site. Hmmm.

A NOBLE PLACE and BEYOND INNOCENCE are both on our bookshelf Gaile. We reviewed them at our blog.

I meant book/author at the top of the box doesn't seem to be working for the titles I want to recommend for our group to read. Do you mean the title shouldn't already be shelved?
The Noble Satyr by Lucinda Brant is on your bookshelf. It is also an award winning novel.

message 6: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Nord (cnord2) Y'all might want to consider my novel, 'No Greater Glory' ... The #1 Civil War romance at Amazon for almost four months. Also, the Library Journal recently gave it a great review, concluding with "a steamier Gone With the Wind". Come take a peak while it's still only .99 cents...I'd love your thoughts...:-)

message 7: by Cora (last edited Jan 28, 2013 05:28PM) (new)

Cora Lee (coralee49) I second Cindy's nomination...there aren't many Civil War-set books around (that I know of), and hers is a good one :-)

I also nominate The Fifth Knight by EM Powell...it revolves around the murder of Thomas Becket. It fits the new to the reader category (she's a new author), and possibly the indie published one (Fifth Knight was published by Amazon's Thomas & Mercer imprint...does that count as indie?). At any rate, it was a great book, and well worth the price.

message 8: by Amber (new)

Amber Does anyone have any Canadian novels? I've read The Day the Falls Stood Still which takes place on the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls border. It was great. But I'm having trouble finding another.

Lisa | 6 comments May I nominate the two books I just finished.

One- In the Land of the Long White Cloud by Sarah Lark by Sarah Lark, I left a review for this one. If you want to a little bit about it

Two- Of Windmills and War by Diane Moody by Diane Moody. This one takes place in America and Holland during the last 5 years of WWII, this book contains a more spiritual look at love, but romantic just the same

I have looked up the book by Sarah Lark but the English version seems to only come as an audio book. All the books I found by her are not written in English. Did you read it in English or listen to it?

Never mind. I found a paperback copy at Barnes &Nobel!

The Kindle edition was a translation, I don't know if you would be able to find one for the Nook

Have you read any of Alfred Silver's historicals? Great on Canadian history!

message 14: by Caz (new)

Caz (caz963) | 16 comments Anyone looking for a UK set book might like to check out A Splendid Defiance by Stella Riley which is set during the Civil War (I believe it's currently discounted at Smashwords.)

Misfit Amber wrote: "Does anyone have any Canadian novels? I've read The Day the Falls Stood Still which takes place on the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls border. It was great. But I'm having trouble finding another."

Beyond the Shining Mountains by Doris Shannon. OOP, but shouldn't be too hard to track down, libraries seem to have copies.

I need a Canada-set title, so I'll have a look at that one; thanks, Misfit!

Misfit Here's a list of books set in Canada.

M.K. (mkstelmack) Amber wrote: "Does anyone have any Canadian novels? I've read The Day the Falls Stood Still which takes place on the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls border. It was great. But I'm having trouble finding another."

In addition to the list Misfit provided, here are a few more: (coming from a Canadian)

Deafening by Frances ItaniDeafeningA story of a deaf woman in Ontario and her time with a soldier. Quite beautiful.

The Winter Vault by Anne Michaels
The Winter VaultIt opens in 1964 (not sure if that makes it historical enough)and is a literary romance of loss and reconciliation. Written by a poet, it's quite lyrical.

If romance isn't necessary and you're just wanting a book about a patch of Canada and its people, I recommend Donna Morrissey's books. From Newfoundland, she writes about The Rock like nobody's business and tells crackling complex tales to boot. Donna Morrissey

And, if it's just historical you want, there's a couple by Timothy Findley (deceased): Not Wanted on the Voage (a retelling of Noah and the ark) and The Wars. Not Wanted on the VoyageWars

Beth Turza | 2 comments I agree with Lisa. I too want to nominate 'Of Windmills and War' by Diane Moody.

I have another recommendation for the shelve although it does take place in England. To me, it was a five star read! A novel within a novel, this one is not not one for the birds! The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen by Syrie James

Diane Prettyman (dianeowensprettyman) | 7 comments http://www.amazon.com/Redesigning-Emm...
I recommend Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley. It is a great novel set in Scotland and addresses the concept of genetic memory. I also enjoyed The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin. My new book, Redesigning Emma, is set in Manhattan at the turn-of- the- last century. A Manhattan milliner determined to take the fashion world by storm stumbles into the middle of the newsboy strike.

Yvonne (ydbull) | 1 comments I loved Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley. Excellent choice.

Me too, love the book, just finished reading it too. I am making another recommendation
Chelynne, set in the time of King Charles 2 also in England. It not the typical regency romance, and I found I liked it

message 25: by Amber (new)

Amber Thanks to all for the Canadian suggestions. I'll be looking into them. :-)

I would highly recommend "Burden of Desire" by Robert MacNeil. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/93...

I read it years ago, but still remember passages from it. It would qualify as Canadian and WWI setting.

message 30: by Caz (new)

Caz (caz963) | 16 comments I've just finished For the Love of a Soldier by Victoria Morgan, and it's a fantastic read. I've given it 5 stars.

It's set in the UK, in a lesser-used period of history, the 1850s and takes a brief look at some of the events of the Crimean War, particularly the Charge of the Light Brigade.

That sounds good. Library has it. Another good one on the Crimean War (including a main character smack in the middle of The Charge of the Light Brigade) is Scarlet Shadows by Emma Drummond.
