there is a need to support \mathbb{1}
currently it just renders similar but not identical to \mathrm{1}.

This seems to be an upstream bug in MathJax, the syntax does not work on their standard system.
A relevant stackexchange thread is https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/26637/how-do-you-get-mathbb1-to-work-characteristic-function-of-a-set
I am not sure what to do? Do you have a suggestion? Is there a way to render the 1 with the additional line in MathJax?
It seems like all the solutions require some other LaTeX packages to be installed. The discussion on WikiProject maths suggests that this is not the best notation.
For an indicator function, I'm sure this isn't the answer you wanted, but I would suggest using a plain {\displaystyle 1}1 or bold {\displaystyle \mathbf {1} }\mathbf {1} which are more common notations than blackboard bold in this context.
No other use case has been offered, so I've marked the task as low priority.
In general this seems impossible. However, one can use utf-8 for individual numbers as suggested by david

This would require new macros a la \doubleStruckI - \doubleStruckIX, do you think this would be an adequate workaround?
This has appeared again at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Mathematics&oldid=1064958662 some examples of usage are Heaviside step function, Kan extension, and Quantum operation.
