Help request

Hi. With what do you need help? --W.marsh 04:40, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I didnt know that Wikipedia had users who'd respond this fast. I had only placed the tag a few moments ago.

The problem is that: I am using Mozilla Firefox. There is a tool available on the Wikipedia portal itself which can be downloaded and used as an add-on with this browser. I have the latest version of Mozilla that is not compatible to the toolbar (which seemingly requires an older version). Can you tell me what I should do?

Maybe, I would just need to learn the tags all by myself, by browsing through pages and viewing their sources.

Anirudh

If we're talking about the same Wikipedia Toolbar, I'm afraid there's not an official version that works with FireFox v1.5 yet. But there is a test/preview version, which you can download here: http://wikipedia.mozdev.org/history.html. It may have some bugs. --W.marsh 04:50, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. And more, if you could tell me, why arent all the tags that I have placed in my babel not appearing on my page?

I went ahead and fixed it, it's probably just easier to look at what I did. You need to use a specific babel template based on how many boxes you're using. --W.marsh 05:08, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How do I sort out the babel at the bottom of the page? It does not seem to be in order...

Hello, Anirudhsbh, I think I fixed the problem with your userboxes. You can look at the code and see how to do the wiki-table that I put them in. I removed the {{helpme}} request for now, but let us know if there's anything else you have trouble with. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 07:59, Jan. 30, 2006

i don't think we should be copy/pasting a whole section of the article on ahmedabad from the gujarat goverment website. the whole section just read like an advertisement.. so i removed it.

regarding copyright paranoia - i think the following comment in that same page sums up my views to this issue - "Quotation, even without attribution, is specifically allowed in international copyright law, and single sentences are generally not protectable." Not protectable, but taking sentences verbatim, or lengthy unattributed paraphrase, is for better or for worse considered academic dishonesty of the first degree and often punished with the academic equivalent of the death penalty. While I don't think we should delete entire articles that such material is inserted into, it would be extremely bad for the project's credibility to tolerate these to remain. --w:User:NTK

i still think that we should rewrite the section (copyright or no copyright), or make a separate article on the sabarmati river front project.

I don't really know enough about the subject to do a demerger, and I don't think the articles as they were before the merger would be correct either. You're welcome to do it, or I think User: Taaoo would be the more knowledgeable editor. TimBentley 14:40, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help

Hi you requested help in the articlle Five point someone, how can we help? --pgk(talk) 12:43, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to classify that article into a literary stub. It is a work by an Indian author Chetan Sharma, it is however incomplete, and I am ignorant of the tag which I would be needing to put there.

Anirudh 1815 hrs, 12 February 2006 (IST)

You can look through Wikipedia:WikiProject_Stub_sorting/Stub_types and decide which stub best fits. Thanks --pgk(talk) 12:56, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You can also just add {{stub}} to the page. From Brendenhull 14:21, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Dalermehndi.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or ask for help at Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. Thank you. -- Carnildo 13:05, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userboxes

You should render the code from your userboxes and replace the template versions on your userpage with them, because shortly, all userbox templates will no longer be on the main Wikipedia namespace. Just a thought. Hope my assistance was of some significance. Эйрон Кинни 23:47, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Query about citations

Dear Phroziac,

This is Andy123. I was talking to you on #wikipedia the other day. I have a query.

It is about citations. Some controversial articles to which NPOV standards are rather difficult to achieve might require many citations and authorities from various sources over the internet. Is it necessary that the links be placed on the page of the article itself? I think that would be a degrading thing to do with the format. The external links should be placed at the bottom of the page, if they can justify the content of the article. I will be watching this page, so please reply here. If you can, then reply on my discussion page as well.

There were some templates on my page that are not been displayed at all.

Template user agnostic and Template user evolution Can you tell me what happened to them?

- Anirudh 1130 hrs 21 February 2006 (IST)

I don't know anything about citations. You'd be better to ask someone else about that. As for the templates, a lot of userboxes have been being deleted lately, mostly political ones, because WP:NOT a soapbox. --Phroziac . o º O (♥♥♥♥ chocolate!) 12:16, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why remove the blank image? - Aksi great 15:26, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You had not put up any picture in its stead. The blank image is irrelevant to the article. Or is it not? --Andy123 15:29, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I put a blank picture just to indicate that we had no picture, and it would be better if someone could put a picture there. The problem is that all the pictures on the government of india site are copyright of the government of india. They do not fall under the right to info act. Only pictures of the government taken before 50 years fall under the indian public domain! So, I thought I would put a blank picture till we get a better photo. It was done under the suggestion of User:Ganeshk - Aksi great

What you have explained here is not quite justifiable. I would like you to rethink upon it. Is there any policy on Wikipedia about it? You could have definately mentioned about the requirement of a picture on the talk page. Technically, placing a blank picture does not have a stand here. Read WP:IUP for details (nothing of the sort you are talking about exists on the page). Moreover, a blank picture taking up space on an encyclopedia article looks extremely unprofessional. --Andy123 16:18, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with what you say. Actually, the image thing has been on the back of my mind since when I started adding those blank images. Can you also help me find some pictures or some rule which allows us to add pictures from the Lok Sabha website? - Aksi great 16:28, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Lok Sabha website does not come under the GFDL policies of Wikipedia. For uploading pictures on a Wikipedia page, the images should be registered specifically under GFDL. If you search for promotional websites of the MPs (remember that only promotional pictures can be used, which are available with the press, but not necessarily press release photographs), you can use them under the fair use option that Wikipedia provides. The images have to be of low resolution, and used only for depiction, this would qualify for fair usage on Wikipedia. For example, the pictures used on Green Day are licensed under fair use. (The Right to Information Act, does not have any relevancy here. The copyrights applying here are of the United States copyright law) --Andy123 16:47, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Found a suitable image in place of the blank image. . Also Template {{reqphoto}} can be used. - Aksi great 16:50, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Keep in mind that you are creating only stubs and not full length articles on Wikipedia. Such tags should be placed when the article has grown to some extent. Because the templates would only add up to the space on the page, when there is not much given about the person in the article. There are lots and lots of stubs on Wikipedia like these, and they would be quite difficult to manage if you place such templates on the whole lot of them. Furthermore, I would always suggest that you use the templates rather than images uploaded by users for such purpose. --Andy123 16:57, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your edit work on the above list. Do keep up the good work, i could use a hand - mskadu 21:05, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I could help you out even more, if you could create standard tables for me for me on whole page, or set up a bot to do it. --Andy123 05:12, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! And yes, I am Indian. --Splitpeasoup 23:48, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was quite confident that you would not be finding any more mistakes in the article. Guess I was wrong. I think I will have to tone down my godlike level of English a bit ;). I am from Ahmedabad. What about you? --Andy123 23:53, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS: I must tell you that I am not a sikh but a Rajput of the Bhati clan. People tend to mistake me for a sikh after they notice my surname. I believe that the Bhati and the Bhatti clan are completely different tribes, but they share a common page on Wikipedia. Any available solutions for that? --Andy123 23:56, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't be too envious, this'll all blow over soon. Thanks for your encouragement, and YOU keep up the good work as just from a brief look at your various pages, you're a great contributor. Nach0king 00:47, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image-page detaching from your User page

Hello Anirudhsbh, first of all, sorry for detaching your user-page from no source information image page. I did not delete any of the imagesonly tried to detach your user page from image page. It was already tagged with no source information, so you should take care of that first, if you care about so much. You should not upload and use the images which have inappropriate tag. If you upload an image using some webpage, then perform whatever written on dark yellow background "Image?" on WP:CP. If you have any difficulty now, then please let me know. Thanks-- Shyam (T/C) 21:02, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Urshyam, I think what you were doing was an incorrect way of doing things. You should have placed that picture for speedy deletion by adding the appropriate template tags on the image page. Removing them from other pages is not your job. If the image gets deleted by the bureaucracy, then the image will automatically be removed from the pages that are using the image. --Andy123 12:02, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I fully endorse Anirudhsbh's edit to Green Day, I have reverted Psychomelodic's revert and explained why here, the link removed by Andy could hardly qualify as criticism, and this warning is totally unjustified. --Obli (Talk)? 23:29, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userboxes under threat

This user believes that only articles need reflect a NPOV, and that displaying political, religious, or other beliefs using userboxes and user categories should not be banned.

There is currently a movement to ban userboxes from Wikipedia which are shared and which create List of Wikipedians. Certain admins have taken it upon themselves to preemptively sabotage and/or delete such categories and template. There are hundreds of userpages which were delinked from categories without the users' knowledge. They have been stopped, barely, and the damage reverted— for now. There is a Wikipedia:Userbox policy poll, which if passed, will make required by policy the damage done to categories and templates. If you do not want this to happen, I urge you to vote Oppose. in the poll. Support is currently running at about 66%, and your vote could make the difference. It is said to require 75%-80% to be deemed reflective of consensus.

Thank you,

Srikeit 05:29, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I do not have any views on this issue. It wouldnt make a big difference to me, even if they are removed. Userboxes have been abused in the past. --Andy123 13:08, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox schools

Hi! I saw your comment on the talk page of Barasat Peary Charan Sarkar Government High School. The infobox used on the page- is that not a school infobox? Are there other infoboxes as well for schools?Where can I find them?In other school pages I guess!!!--Dwaipayanc 05:33, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you need to give this link a visit ---> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Infobox#Schools --Andy123 07:09, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! The infobox used in Barasat Peary Charan Sarkar Government High School was built in the lines of the infobox used in the article of some other school. The link you have provided certainly contains the best infoboxes. But the one used in the article is sufficient enough for the amount of info we currently have on the school. If I get to collect more information (like the number of students, campus size etc.) I shall add those info to the present info box.I am telling this because many of the fields will remain empty if we use the infobox as described here. Thanks for your help. When I collect more information on the school, I shall of course consider those infoboxes.Bye.--Dwaipayanc 07:20, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried working that out myself, but could not come to any possible solution. I am new to Wikipedia, and do not understand the mark up well. I think, I will ask for admin attention on this article. --Andy123 07:30, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sean Black has just informed me that the template is faulty and it would not work without an image. He is trying to improve the template, but do you have the image relevant for the article Barasat? --Andy123 07:51, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your kind words. However, I think I am far from being in a position to RfA !! I even do not know all the technical aspects of Wikipedia ! And yes, please ask for the admin help for Barasat.--Dwaipayanc 07:33, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I could not penetrate the ambiguity of your answer. A 'Yes' or 'No' would do much help.
"However, I do not mind some janitorial works though. Please let me know when such works are to be done." and,
"I would like to continue the works on Wikipedia as usual" are little contradicting. I hope you don't mind. --Andy123 07:57, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That was a very polite "no" ! LOL. My etiquettes going bad nowadays.I was really flatterd. Anyway, thanks for your effort for the infobox.I will look up if such faulty infoboxes are there for other cities.Keep in touch. And if you feel I can be of use in any sort of janitorial work (I do not think only administrators have to do such works...anybody can), please let me know.Usually I do little bit of such works whenever I come across some article that's in need of cleaning- but do not do such works in an organized way.Bye.--Dwaipayanc 10:12, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Want to help

Anirudh: You might visit my user page for information about me and my views. I have time and I want to help. You may contact me by e-mail or through my page. One problem. Hindu, Hinduism and Hindu Portal pages, the three pages that I have visited, say that Hinduism is based on Aryan/Vedic beliefs. As I mention on my user page, this is a deep fallacy, and only pleases the Arya Samajis or the Smartas. I also believe that Aryans were immigrants to India. I think the indigenous beliefs (Shiva and Vishnu) are being disregarded. This would delight only the Christians and Muslims, and will cause deep sorrow to all who do not think they have Aryan descent. Changes made by me were reverted. Would you please have a look? I sorta like heavy stuff, religion, sociology, culture; no light stuff and no wavering from my subjects.

(I have sent a similar message to Deeptrivia)

Aupmanyav 08:31, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I personally have the Aryan/Vedic beliefs and that the Aryans came from Central Asia and settled into India, so I might not be the right person to look into this matter. However, if you can source and cite your edits with appropriate discussions on the talk page (read WP:CITE and WP:NOR policies of Wikipedia) of the relevant articles, things might work out for you. The other thing that you might do is, refer to the Arbitration Committee. --Andy123 12:11, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi Andy,

Further to your comment, which you subsequently struck-out, obviously apart from Sikhiwiki being GFDL compliant, I do a lot of work on Sikhiwiki and so it is possible that some of the work was actually done by me.

Anyway, the matter has been resolved - many thanks to Sukh! I hope everything is in order.

Bhog

Hi Andy, Thanks for your message and kind words. I was not aware that Bhog has links to the Hindu religion - but unfortunately, I am no expert on Hinduism! I have read the article and although it is 90% correct, there are a few facts that do appear totally correct:

1. The Akhand Paath has to take place over 2 days ie 48 hours. I have never seen any great flexibility on this timing – so where you say "…an uninterrupted and complete reading of the book. This usually takes days to complete through a relay of readers who work round-the-clock to come to its end.", I think the timing of 48 hours needs to be introduced.

2. You say "The Karah Prasad that is distributed at the end of any congregational service might also be termed as 'Bhog'" – I don't think this is totally correct. The Karah Prasad may undergo 'Bhog' but it is not itself termed 'Bhog'

3. I prefer to use the word "Paath" as this is more nearer the true pronunciation and also because this distinguishes this word from the English word "Path".

If you wish I will have a go at putting this right?? I hope this helps. --Hari Singh 14:05, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Answer

Esperanza is a group of Wikipedians there for each other. Basically if you sign up you commit to helping other esperanzians, giving them a pat on the back for their work, wishing them on their birthday & other odd stuff to basically spread the goodwill. It also has Trading Spaces[1] & admin coaching[2] where lesser experienced users can seek help from experienced users. I see you are already a member of Esperanza. I suggest you visit the Esperanza page & check out its programmes & add your events (Birthdays, first edit day etc) to its calendar. In short, Esperanza will make you better known in the Wikipedia community & vice versa.

Hope that clears it up

Thank you for voting on my RfA. It passed with a consensus to promote of 45/7/1. My RfA

Thank you for your support on my request for adminship. It did not succeed, however, with votes of 10/19/11, so I have not yet become an administrator. I appreciate your support vote, though, and I look forward to see you vote for me next time! Should you have any questions, comments, or complaints at any point in the future, please do not hesitate to let me know on my talk page or via e-mail.

Hi

Hi Anirudhsbh, and thank you for taking time to vote on my RfA. I understand that my last 6000+ edits were not sufficient to convince you that edits like some of my early ones would never be repeated again, but I sincerely hope that at some point I would be able to convince you of my transformation. Looking forward to working with you in future. Regards, deeptrivia (talk) 03:26, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is not the number of edits that makes one a good contributor. You have done well for Wikipedia, but as pointed out by those who have opposed you in your RfA has shown us the wrong way. Instead of getting disheartened, you should try again in sometime, and take this time to contribute well to Wikipedia. Your contributions will not go unappreciated. I completely trust you when you talk about your transformation, like hundreds of other Indian users. In three months time, you can try again and see the change in your RfA. It would be even better if you can join the other Wikipedians for common discussions over IRC. #wikipedia --Andy123(talk) 08:36, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA

My RfA recently closed and it was a success, passing at 84-02-00. I would like to thank you for taking the time to weigh in and on your subsequent support. And I know it's quite cliche, but if you ever need any assistance by an admin, grab a Pepsi and don't hesitate to drop me a line on my talk page. Thanks again and see you around on IRC, Cokedrinka. Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

The page hasn't actually been created yet, so I just entered a note explaining on the page. Thanks, FireFoxT [18:39, 26 March 2006]

I added you as a contact, how can i do inline chat (on the e-mail window) without client installs? - Ganeshk (talk) 22:47, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see you online on gmail. - Ganeshk (talk) 22:50, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page Blanking

On 23-Mar, you blanked Judicial process. Blanking pages is generally considered a bad idea. I've tried to find a better destination for this redirect. If you believe the redirect should be deleted, please follow the redirect portion of the deletion procedures. If you believe an article should be written instead of the redirect, please write a stub. If you have questions, please let me know. Thanks! -- JLaTondre 04:05, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copied from my talk page: Sounds good. -- JLaTondre 15:05, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DaGizza's RfA

Thanks!

Hi Anirudhsbh/March 2006, thank you for supporting me in my RfA which passed with a tally of (93/1/2). If you need any help or wish discuss something with me, you are always welcome to talk to me. GizzaChat © 12:04, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Education section added

Hi. Have finally added the education section. Regarding your comment about night life, I think a section on "Sports and recreation" would be appropriate. CG road, SG road and Ashram road could be mentioned in the "economy" section yet to be added. Vastrapur lake, Sabarmati project and other such projects could be added to another section called "development project". - Aksi_great 14:54, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

I believe People and culture would be the suitable header for that. In one scenario, we might depict with a picture, the old city and then in a different paragraph we show the diversity in another part of the city. --Andy123(talk) 19:37, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Indian IRC

Thanks for the link. Did you use AWB to do that talk post? If not, you must give it a try. It is so much easy. There is a registering process first though. - Ganeshk (talk) 23:01, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite Indian any more ...

Actually Anirudh, I'm British now. I was born Indian, but have not lived continuously in India since the age of 7. No offence; in fact I'm quite flattered that I retain enough 'Indian-ness' to pass off as one. Imc 19:37, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My (HereToHelp’s) RfA

Thank you for supporting my RfA. I’m proud to inform you that it passed with 75 support to 1 oppose to 2 neutral. I promise to make some great edits in the future (with edit summaries!) and use these powers to do all that I can to help. After all, that’s what I’m here for! (You didn’t think I could send a thank you note without a bad joke, could I?) --HereToHelp 12:23, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Namaskar Anirudhsbh, how are you? Thanks for your support in my RFA. The final vote count was (88/3/1), so I am now an administrator. I am humbled by your vote and grateful. Please let me know if at any stage you require assistance, or if you have comments on how I am doing as an administrator. Once again thank you and with kind regards Gryffindor 17:16, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My block

That block is ancient. That IP range was supposed to have been unblocked by Ambi a while ago. [3] Clearly there is no need for this IP range to be blocked now... Thanks for taking care of the problem. 172 | Talk 06:03, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The block is nit coming from 172's long-expired block, but rather it's a an autobock, a side-effect of a recent block of mine. Which wouldn't show up in the block logs for the IP, and which is why it is important that when reporting htese instances of collateral damage we get all the information. Usually, we'd need the block message, something like "This IP is blocked because it was recently used by User:X. X was blocked because of 'YYY...'". In fact I'm fairly which block it is in this case, my only recent one for spamming, but that should be expired now too. Autoblocks are always for 24 hours. My block was many days ago. It ought to be unblocked by now. Dmcdevit·t 07:57, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sonagachi

please see this--Dwaipayanc 11:39, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would love to join the IRC. But I have never used it in my life! Right now I tried ti connect but "failed to connect to server", says the application. I will join later.
BTW, yes you have pointed out correctly. Thank you. Sonagachi will be mentioned in Kolkata, probably in the "Demographics". Thanks a lot for pointing out. It just never occured to us, though Sonagachi is listed there in the Kolkata-related artiocles template in the "See also" section of Kolkata. Thanks. Bye.--Dwaipayanc 12:14, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A revised version of the proposed policy against censorship is now open for voting. Will you kindly review the policy and make your opinions known? Thank you very much. Loom91 11:23, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
