The first of March was the date given for the company's move into the record business with the BASF label making its debut in Germany. According to the 6 July 2021 issue of ''Fader'', PPX Enterprises owner Ed Chalpin had been enlisted by [[A Tribe Called Quest]] to oversee their deal with [[Jive Records]]. Apparently, founding member [[Ali Shaheed Muhammad]] and the rest of the group were unaware that Chalpin had added a clause to the deal that with the next five records, his company PPX Enterprises would be getting a percentage of the royalties. When the band were recording their ''The Low End Theory'' album they embarked on a mission to have the clause erased. A court case involving Jive Records ensued. Joe White was a Jamaican singer and musician who had a handful of hits in his home country. He was part of the duo, Joe White and Chuck.

Background

In addition to being a vocalist, Joe White played the piano and melodica. Recording at Studio One, he had hits such as "My Guiding Star".[1]

Recording under Sonia Pottinger, Joe White and Chuck scored with the ballad "Every Night" in 1966 which caught on instantly as a hit and stayed in the Jamaican charts for several months.[2][3] The song was actually recorded in one take.[4]

Career

In 1966, Joe and Della recorded the song "So Close" which was "Eighth Games" by the Baba Brooks Band and released on Doctor Bird DB 1043.[5]

In 1968, his recording "I'm So Proud" was released in Jamaica on the Flame label.[6]

According to the 16 August 1969 issue of Billboard, Sugar Records was a new record label that was going to exploit the music by West Indian artists. The recordings would be overseen by production director Charles Ross. Three artists to have their work released that month were Claude Sang, Joe White, and Frenz.[7] The songs that White recorded for his single were "Yesterday" and "I Am Free".[8]

BASF, the record label existed during the 1970s. The label issued thousands of recordings by artists of many genres.

The BASF record label was the vinyl record division of the BASF chemical group.[1]

The label had ventured into the quadraphonic area and the label's releases included Demonstration in Quadro, Fantastic Quadro by rosse Orchester Spielen Welthits and Musik Total Erleben.[2]

History

Acciording to the 20 February 1971 issue of Billboard, BASF were to set up their record label early in the following year. The company was currently looking for a pressing and distribution deal to market record discs and tapes under the BASF banner.

The first of March was the date given for the company's move into the record business with the BASF label making its debut in Germany. Werner Cyprys a German producer had for some time already been active in building up a ready catalogue for the label's introduction.[3] The label had also taken on board, Sigrid Volkmann, a German producer from Munich. Some of the artists which would be releasing their work through BASF were, Daniela, Gisela Marell, Hans Juergen Baeumler (ice star), John O'Brian Docker (guitarist ), Arno Flor (big band leader), Thomas Fritsch (actor), Peter Garden (tv star), Rolf Kuehn (jazz star), and Dieter Thomas.[4]

They had already sealed a distribution deal with MPS Records. The MPS catalogue included work by includes material by Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson and Errol Garner. The deal also included the budget cassette company Polyband.[5]

The 29 April 1972 issue of Billboard (page 22) featured ads from the Shorewood Packaging Corporation welcoming BASF Records to America and the PRC Recording Company welcoming BASF Records to the American scene.[6] The following page had some of the label's artists who had their work released on the label. They were, Don "Sugar Cane" Harris with Fiddler On The Rock, Earl "Fatha" Hines with Fatha & His Flock On Tour, Jim Hall with It's Nice to Be With You, Dave Pike Set with Infa Red, Ella Fitzgerald with Watch What Happens, Oscar Peterson with Motions & Emotions and Hello Herbie, The Kenny Clarke Big Band with All Smiles, Milt Buckner Trio with Play Chords, and Don Cherry with Eternal Rhythm.

The contact for the United States was BASF Systems, Inc., Crosby Drive, Bedford, Mass. 01730. And for Canada it was BASF Canada Ltd., P.O. Box 430, Station St. Laurent, Montreal 379, Quebec.[7]

The 12 May 1973 issue of Billboard showed three BASF releases in the charts. Cindy & Bert were at no. 5 in the German chart with "Immer Wieder Sonntags" and Freddy Breck was at no. 7 with "Bianca".[8] Breck also had an album, Uberall Auf Der Welt at no. 10 in the Dutch chart.[9]

PPX Enterprises, Inc. is the umbrella organization for various PPX entities which includes P.P.X. and PPX Productions. The label, like its Founder Ed Chalpin is quite likely remembered for its dealings Jimi Hendrix and cover versions.

Background

PPX Enterprises, Inc. provided cover versions of top hits from the 1950s to the present in various genres. These could be obtained for use by record companies, duplicators, for films use, background music, radio and television.[1]

The company was formed by Ed Chalpin in 1961,[2] who had been in the music business since 1956.[3]

Known for turning out cover-versions of songs, it was estimated in 1975 that PPX had a catalogue of around 5,000 titles.[4] Subsidiaries of PPX Enterprises include Dimensional Sound which was located at 301 W 54 St., New York, NY 10019.[5]

Artists who were signed over the years to PPX include, Jimmy Cliff, Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Knight, Anthony Swete and Ella Moore.[6][7][8]

1960s

In 1962, Ed Chalpin had signed contracts with RCA Mexicana and Gamma Records to promote his pre-recorded tapes catalogue.[9]

It was reported by Cash Box in the magazine's 18 November 1962 issue that PPX Enterprises were expanding their business into Latin America. Under Ed Chalpin's supervision, Stanley Steinhouse would be covering the development of PPX in all the Latin American markets. Representing PPX Enterprises in Venezuela was Fabrica Venezolana de Discos which Steinhouse was also involved with. Also the Hitsvillve series of records with PPX recordings had been issued.[10]

The 4 November, 1967 issue of RPM Weekly wrote that PPX Enterprises had announced the finalization of their national negotiations for two new Jimi Hendrix LPs. The English Decca and London labels were set up. There were also negotiations in process for release Germany, Austria and Switzerland.[11]

1970s to 1980s

According to Cash Box in the magazine's May 9, 1970 issue, Swete along with Curtis Knight and Ella Moore were to have releases in the near future on the Paramount label. They were to be promoted under the wing of Bill Gallagher of Famous Music. With Knight's album Down in the Village already released, Swete and Moore were to have their recordings released in the near future.[12]

It was reported by Billboard in the magazine's 17 February, 1973 issue that PPX Enterprises, Inc. had taken legal action against the administrator of Jimi Hendrix's estate, Polydor Records; Track Records, Michael Frank Jeffery, of London, and Yameta Ltd., Nassau, Bahamas. The case came about as a result of Hendrix who was making a living as a guitarist and a member of The Squires had made a recording at PPX Studios with a member of the group and on October 15, 1965, had entered into a contract for three years.[13]

As of July 1979, PPX Enterprises, Inc. was located at 301 West 54th St., New York, N.Y. 10019.[14]

1990s to 2020s

According to the 6 July 2021 issue of Fader, PPX Enterprises owner Ed Chalpin had been enlisted by A Tribe Called Quest to oversee their deal with Jive Records. Apparently, founding member Ali Shaheed Muhammad and the rest of the group were unaware that Chalpin had added a clause to the deal that with the next five records, his company PPX Enterprises would be getting a percentage of the royalties. When the band were recording their The Low End Theory album they embarked on a mission to have the clause erased. A court case involving Jive Records ensued. They later discovered that PPX had sold their share of a settlement they made with Jive Records to a party who entered into a partnership with the music royalties portal, Royalty Exchange.[15]

It was reported in the 12 May 1973 edition of Billboard that Chalpin was now the manager of singer Jimmy Cliff and had signed deals with Warner Brothers, and EMI.[16]

Later years

According the March 10, 2015 article "CURTIS KNIGHT & THE SQUIRES Featuring JIMI HENDRIX – “Station Break” Streaming" by Brave Worlds, the recordings that Jimi Hendrix did for PPX and RSVP are part of his extraordinary legacy.[17]

Ed Chalpin died in Boca Raton, Florida on 1 October, 2019. He was surrounded by family which included his two daughters, a sister and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held on 6 October 2019 at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, New York.[18]

Joy Marshall was an English based American Jazz singer who performed in clubs around England and overseas. She recorded for the Decca and Toast labels. and had a UK hit during the 1960s.

Background

Joy Marshall was born in New York and started out singing in church. It was in the 1950s that she was a navy singer, performing in a big band. After her discharge from the navy, she performed in clubs and got steady work. She was unable to get a recording contract while other singers did. One night she was at the Purple Onion club in San Franscisco. There, Royston Marker who was an executive from New Zealand talked her into moving to England where he said she would do better.[1]

Joy Marshall moved to England where she replaced Cleo Laine in the Johnny Dankworth band. She became one England's top local jazz artists.[2]

Marshall married Peter King at the Westminster Registry Office at the Marylebone Town Hall in London, on 29th October 1962.[3] Marshall would end up in a relationship with Tubby Hayes.[4]

According to the 14 March 1964 issue of the Liverpool Echo, Marshall was aged 21 when she came to England eighteen months prior.[5]

According to Val Wilmer who saw Marshall and Blossom Dearie perform at Ronnie Scott's club said Marshall had issues with audiences. Even though Marshall had a slight resemblance to Sarah Vaughan there were unfair comparisons between herself and Vaughan.[6]

While living in England Marshall experienced problems with discrimination. Along with Selena Jones and Madeline Bell, she experienced discrimination from landlords or prospective landlords.[7]

Career

Marshall recorded the song "Love Can Change So Many Things". Backed with "Till the End of Time", it was released on Ember EMBS 163 in 1962.[8]

In 1964, Marshall played the part of street walker Maureen O'Neill in the musical, Maggie May.[9][10] In spite of having three duets with the star Rachel Roberts, Marshall pulled out because she had no solo spots.[11] She was replaced by Diana Quiseekay in August 1964.[12][13]

In 1965, her solo album, Who Says They Don't Write Good Songs Anymore was released on Decca.[14] She was also in the Netherlands that year. Becked by Rob Madna on piano and the Frans de Kok Orchestra she performed the song "It's All Right with Me".[15]

In 1966, Marshall had a Top 40 hit in the UK with "The More I See You",[16]

In 1968, Marshall recorded the song "And I'll Find You" which was composed by Brian Potter and Graham Dee. It was arranged by Graham Wadsworth. It was originally intended to be a Eurovision Entry song for Sharon Tandy, but it didn't end up being so.[17] Backed with "I'm So Glad You're Back, it was released on Toast TT 512.[18] Reviewed by Peter Jones in the 4 January, 1969 issue of Record Mirror and possibly unaware of Marshall's death that year, it was given a four-star rating.Jones enjoyed listening to it and said it was a very good performance as expected, but the song might not be quite direct enough to click.[19][20]

Death

Marshall was found dead in her London apartment on 21 November at the age of 32. Her death was said to be as a result from an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol. [21][22]

Later years

Thirteen songs that Marshall recorded with the Gordon Beck Quartet in 1968 appeared on the When Sunny Gets Blue (Spring '68 Sessions) album. Credited to The Gordon Beck Quartet featuring Joy Marshall, it was released on Turtle Records TUR502 in 2018.[23][24]
