Hi, how do I reference part of an article in a talk page? Specifically, if I wanted to reference a particular heading of an article, how would I do that? Thanks. ThatJoshuaPerson (talk) 17:06, 22 November 2023 (UTC) |

Hello, I created this account and the screen that appeared told me that I could ask any questions here. What are some rules and tips for new users editing Wikipedia? 84Swagahh (talk) 02:11, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello and welcome to Wikipedia, @84Swagahh. I would start with Help:Introduction and The Wikipedia Adventure. These will help explain our core policies and how to use parts of the software. If you feel up to the task, you can find out how to make an article at Your first article Happy editing, NW1223<Howl at me•My hunts> 02:18, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- New editors are advised to put in weeks to months improving existing articles before attempting to create new articles. See WP:42 for how to properly reference content. Adding content without references or removing referenced content you believe to be not true will be reverted (reversed) by other editors. David notMD (talk) 07:01, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, 84Swagahh, and welcome to the Teahouse and to Wikipedia.
- I agree with what the others have said, except for one thing: David notMD's advice seems to start from the idea that what everybody who edits Wikipedia wants do is create new articles. Maybe you will (in which case take David's advice to heart), maybe you won't. But please don't think that that is the only, or even necessarily the best, way to improve Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 14:25, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- I think David notMD was responding to @NightWolf1223's advice, not to the original poster. We really shouldn't be recommending to anyone with 3 edits that "If you feel up to the task, you can find out how to make an article at Your first article." Valereee (talk) 10:55, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Is Chaotic a neutral adjective?
I'm using it to describe an artist's style. If not, what would be an alternative neutral adjective in place of 'chaotic'? YellowSodium (talk) 14:58, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Whatever the source says? --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:03, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- To enlarge on Tagishsimon's correct if cryptic answer – an article should only describe its subject in terms that its cited Reliable sources have done. You do not need to come up with your own adjectives, because your own judgement would constitute Original Research, or at best Synthesis, which Wikipedia disallows. If a Source has described the artist's style as 'chaotic', it's fine to say that, making it clear that it's the Source saying that rather than it being just Wikipedia's (i.e. your) opinion. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.241.161.192 (talk) 18:13, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Ok thank you! YellowSodium (talk) 00:57, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

How do I switch from source editing to visual editing in Wikipedia:Sandbox?
The "Switch editor" button at the top right of the text box doesn't exist for some reason when editing that page. 91.129.104.148 (talk) 16:43, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- It's because the visual editor does'nt work on that page. You will need to go to Draft:Sandbox to test out the visual editor. NW1223<Howl at me•My hunts> 16:54, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Actually, you can use the Visual Editor on any page which uses the
wikitext
content model by using a URL such as https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Sandbox&veaction=edit, so it's less the visual editor geniuly not working there and more it not being configured to make its activation methods available there. Article and Draft: are not the only namespaces where its configured to be available, it also works in User:, File:, Category:, Portal: and Help:. Victor Schmidt (talk) 08:31, 19 November 2023 (UTC) - Thanks for linking that page. What's the reason for the button appearing on Draft:Sandbox but not Wikipedia:Sandbox? The visual editor seems to work on both, it's just the button to switch to it that's missing. 91.129.104.148 (talk) 17:12, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Officially, the visual editor is only supported in the article and draft namespaces on the English Wikipedia. NW1223<Howl at me•My hunts> 17:26, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. Will it become supported in other namespaces in the future? 91.129.104.148 (talk) 17:34, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Unlikely. DisscusionTools covers the talk pages. For the same reason, it won't be supported in the Wikipedia: namespace (where you are right now). This namespace contains pages like the Teahouse, where the disusssion page is not a talk page. NW1223<Howl at me•My hunts> 17:58, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- VisualEditor is poorly suited for discusssions and the Wikipedia namespace is often used for discussions. Registered users can install User:Novem Linguae/Scripts/VisualEditorEverywhere. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:26, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info. Still, it'd be a lot more convenient if the button to switch still existed in those namespaces (though maybe with a warning popup or something), for doing things that are much easier with the visual editor (like editing citations).
- Also, a possibly related question: Why does en.wikipedia.org have only one "Edit" button that opens either the visual or source editor (apparently depending on which I used last), even though et.wikipedia.org has buttons for both "Edit" and "Edit source" (and is there a way to make en.wikipedia.org also have both buttons so I can choose which one to use without sometimes having to wait for the "wrong" editor to load before I can switch to the one I actually want at the time)? This also happens on pages in the article namespace, so I don't think the reason for it is the same as for my previous question. 91.129.104.148 (talk) 03:30, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Preferences>Editing>Editing mode gives you a drop down; set it to 'show me both editor tabs'. Valereee (talk) 10:46, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Where do I find the Preferences? And why are there both tabs by default on et.wikipedia.org but not en.wikipedia.org? Thanks. 91.129.104.148 (talk) 11:22, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Preferences is at the very top of every page. Each wiki decides what will be the default preference settings on that wiki; at some point there must have been a discussion here to not make 'show me both' the default setting. I agree with you that having both is helpful -- I go back and forth often, depending on exactly what I'm doing -- but some people object to what they perceive as unhelpful extra clutter in the various toolbars, some people dislike or disapprove of the use of Visual Editor and will oppose anything that makes using it likely to be more common. :) Valereee (talk) 11:53, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Special:Preferences only works for registered users. It's stored server-side so settings apply to any device or browser where you are logged in. It has hundreds of settings and features. VisualEditor has some configuration settings at mw:Extension:VisualEditor#Enabling VisualEditor. Wikis can choose differently. The choices for Wikimedia wikis are stored in https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/highlight.php?file=InitialiseSettings.php. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:30, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, had just found that out myself. 91.129.104.148 (talk) 13:33, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Whoops, sorry, editing without enough coffee onboard. :) Valereee (talk) 14:03, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Still couldn't find the preferences, looked it up and according to Help:Preferences they're login-only. :(
- After some searching, I found Talk:VisualEditor#Visibility and mw:VisualEditor/Single_edit_tab, which are related to the "single edit tab" thing, but I haven't been able to find any discussions that resulted in changing it to be that way.
- Thanks for the other info! :) 91.129.104.148 (talk) 13:31, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- I've left a message at User talk:91.129.104.148 about the benefits of creating an account. It's fast, free, easy, and doesn't require any personal information (although I do recommend giving your email, as that can save future stress.) It hides your IP, makes communication easier, and allows you to set up an amazing number of tools that make editing easier. Valereee (talk) 14:08, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- I'll probably end up creating an account eventually, once I have more time to do wikipedia-related stuff.
- Would making an account prevent me from occasionally still editing without logging in (for example if I notice a typo or some vandalism in an article and fix it without taking the time to log in) due to it being considered sockpuppeting? 91.129.104.148 (talk) 14:50, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- No, you can still edit as an IP. The login page should offer you the option of staying logged in for a year, though, so even a casual typo fix won't require you to log in first. What you want to avoid is intentionally logging out to make an edit, especially if it's on a page you're also currently editing logged in. Valereee (talk) 15:16, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- I do most of my browsing in a private window, as that keeps random pages from cluttering up my browser history and somewhat reduces stuff like cookie-based tracking, so I wouldn't stay logged in by default. I'll look more into the account stuff later when I have time. Thanks for the help and bye! :) 91.129.104.148 (talk) 15:35, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

formal tone
My article was rejected and one of the reasons given was that was not written in a formal tone expected of an encyclopedia article. I believe that it meets that critera; this seems to be a subjective statement and I don't know exactly what I need to change.
I should note that my exact article was picked up and published verbatim on Wikitia.
Could someone please advise? thank you. RuthPres (talk) 21:24, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

- All things aside, if you have published the same text verbatim on some other site (which does exist, see https://wikitia.com/wiki/Tony_Kenning), publishing the same text on Wikipedia may constitute as a WP:Copyright violation.
- Please also note that publishing on Wikitia does not mean anything for Wikipedia quality control. Do note that Wikitia is listed on Wikipedia:Spam blacklist. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 21:31, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- I did not publish the article on Wikitia; someone found my draft on this site and published it there without my knowledge or permission to do so. RuthPres (talk) 21:32, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

- @RuthPres: Wikitia has nothing to do with Wikipedia, but anyone is allowed to copy from Wikipedia as long as they acknowledge the source. RudolfRed (talk) 21:32, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- OK thank you. Understand that this has no bearing on the situation, which is what I need to do to improve my article to meet criteria that I'm finding subjective and difficult to follow. Do you have any suggestions? RuthPres (talk) 21:34, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- In a few words, your draft gives too much tangential detail that does not strongly relate to the subject, which is Tony Kenning. Currently, there are many statements that don't relate to Kenning at all, such as After fronting for bands including Nemesis and Wild Mcbride, vocalist Paul Banks was the last member to sign on. Instead of writing about the bands Kenning was involved in, you should really be focusing on what Kenning was doing at what year at what place.
- It is generally not encouraged for new users to create an article immediately. I encourage you to practice editing and read some more Wiki biographies before you decide to write something.
- Your reviewer also wrote that This submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources. Please make sure you read WP:Reliable sources. For example, the first source you use is from Linkedin, which does not count as an RS.
- My suggestion for you is to evaluate what reliable sources you have, and condensate sentences from them. That means a lot of this article needs to be reworked. Good luck and have fun. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 21:49, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- thank you for your feedback! RuthPres (talk) 21:52, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- RuthPres, consider this: Elliott proposed "Deaf Leopard", a name he came up with while designing band posters in art class. Kenning suggested they use the phonetic spelling so they would sound less like a punk band, crossing out the “a” in “Def” and drawing a line down the “o” in “Leopard” to change the name to "Def Leppard". The members agreed and the name Def Leppard became permanent. This strikes me as terribly wordy. Try Elliott proposed "Deaf Leopard", but Kenning suggested that "Def Leppard" would look less like a punk band. -- Hoary (talk) 09:33, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- thank you for your feedback. I have made additional edit and also double checked all citations but have once again been rejected. I have spent almost a year on trying to meet the criteria for Wikipedia and now realize that that is just not possible with this submission. RuthPres (talk) 22:52, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- You are free to abandon the draft if you wish. If there is no editing action it will be deleted in six months. A nuance: Declined (the response) is not the same as Rejected. The latter means that the Reviewer saw no potential to succeed. David notMD (talk) 10:43, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

First article: getting my references right
Hello, I am currently drafting my first article about a defunct sand and gravel business which became a significant producer and distributor of construction materials in the North of England from the 1930's to the 1970's. My draft article was declined a few days ago as my references did not show that that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article. Completely fair and I have since read a lot of wikipedia policy and guidance pages about the subject, taken advice from a couple of Wikiprojects and revised my references, adding more detailed sources including an in-depth Yorkshire Post article in 1937 and industry reference books from the period. Before I re-submit, I'm looking for a little help to check if others agree that these sources now meet the criteria and gather any further suggestions or advice.
My article is here: Draft:Stephen Toulson & Sons.
For complete transparency, there is a COI declaration on the article talk page - I am the founder's great great grandson. The company was sold before I was born and I have no, nor have I ever had, any financial or other affiliation with the company. Adam.toulson (talk) 16:08, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Adam.toulson:, I'll leave others to judge if you have proved notability; though I'm not sure that the references are substantial enough. I'll offer a couple of suggestions:
- There are some pictures available at toulsondna.com. It would improve the look of the article if the copyright holder were willing and legally able to licence those images appropriately (which would allow anybody to use them any way they wished, provided they gave credit) and upload them to Commons, so they could appear in the article. I have added an external link to one of your videos which is relevant.
- Secondly, you need to be aware that Wikipedia does not permit plagiarism. You have reproduced certain text from the toulsondna website (eg the paragraph starting 'Articles of association ...') which is neither set as a quote nor credited. Since the website is clearly copyrighted, and the text there credited to the late J A S Toulson, you cannot assume that you have the right to reuse it freely. I suggest that this is most easily solved by (i) rewriting the text to express the same facts in different words, and (ii) citing the website in the normal fashion. Note that as a non-independent source, this does not support any claims to notability, but is satisfactory for establishing basic information about the business.
- Don't be discouraged. I'd love to see this article approved and moved to mainspace. -- Verbarson talkedits 17:03, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- There's also quite a lot of uncited stuff - the last two sections, for instance - where folksy and unencyclopaedic assertions are made - a lasting legacy as a key player, marked a new chapter. This sort of phraseology detracts from the article. --Tagishsimon (talk) 17:11, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Brutal but helpful! Thanks @Tagishsimon, I've removed the final section which was unnecessary and made some edits throughout to remove phraseology and anything that might be interpreted as promotional. Hopefully the result is a more factual and encyclopaedic article. Thanks for taking the time to help. Adam.toulson (talk) 21:52, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Many thanks @Verbarson for taking the time to review my article and provide me with some coaching and support, it really is appreciated. I own some of the original pictures posted on the ToulsonDNA website (gifted to me by the late John Alfred Stephen Toulson, who was my grandfather). I've uploaded a couple of them to Commons and used them in the article as you suggest. I've also made some substantial edits to the text to make those sections written by my grandfather more succinct and cited the website. Please let me know if you have any further feedback and thanks again. Adam.toulson (talk) 21:50, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

- It's a good article, but per Verbarson, I'm not sure that the notability of the subject is demonstrated by the references; which is a matter of regret. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:36, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- The repeated use of "more than" comes across as promotional. If the sources say how many horses, quarries, etc., then use that number. Maproom (talk) 09:09, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Trimmed a bit. It's close. David notMD (talk) 15:36, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you @David notMD! Adam.toulson (talk) 16:16, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the clear and actionable feedback @Maproom - I've taken that onboard and removed all references to "more than" or "significant" etc and used the number printed in the source. Adam.toulson (talk) 16:16, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

in regards to
i come across the words "in regards to" all the time, but i think it should be "in regard to" in all of those instances (unless the text is inside a quote of someone mistakenly saying that). am I correct here? i want to validate that before i make the change in many places. Iljhgtn (talk) 22:29, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- It should not be pluralised - https://languagetool.org/insights/post/regard/ ... ideally it should not be used, fullstop, IMO: regarding, concerning, about &c. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:35, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Might be an WP:ENGVAR thing. Wiktionary lists both. Don't do a mass change without consensus. RudolfRed (talk) 22:44, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Iljhgtn: There are over 10,000 articles containing "in regards to". You might want to discuss at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos. GoingBatty (talk) 22:47, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- i am approved for AWB, but have not used it yet. this seems like it would be a good first usage if i was careful to not use it on instances appearing inside of a quote. what do you think? Iljhgtn (talk) 23:32, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- I think GoingBatty's suggestion is sensible. You might want to win consensus for your plan. You might find that heavy going b/c some folk don't understand rules of grammar, and some simply don't believe in them & would be the first to put Eric Partridge up against the wall . --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:38, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- if this is a monumental task, i can move on to other things. Iljhgtn (talk) 23:43, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- You need to decide if you want to break this ground. No-one can make you do it. Getting consensus for doing things which affect thousands of articles is wise. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:47, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- if i dont use AWB, and just change it on an ad hoc basis when i come across it seems easier and i want to make sure just doing that is not a problem? Iljhgtn (talk) 00:10, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Iljhgtn, I can't see why it should be. But you'd be spending a nontrivial amount of time on an extraordinarily trivial pursuit -- indeed, one that in my opinion (unlike Tagishsimon's) would bring zero benefit. Consider the article Rajpurohit, which now tells us: "Rajpurohit and Charan communities are considered to be identical in regards to their social customs and political ideologies." If you're going to tinker with that, then why not "Rajpurohit and Charan communities are considered to have identical social customs and political ideologies"? Indeed, if you're in a mood to clear up crappy prose, I always recommend searching for the string "at the tender age of". Such starstruck editorializing doesn't belong in Wikipedia, and any article that has it is likely to be laden with a lot of other hagiographic twaddle ("legendary", etc) to which you can apply your editorial machete. -- Hoary (talk) 00:33, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- is there a way that i can save this conversation somewhere for referring back to later? I know there is always a "view history", but sometimes that can be really hard to read through and find the information you want. Iljhgtn (talk) 00:38, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Iljhgtn, go into the history, find a version that you like, and copy its URL to your clipboard. Then go to the website tinyurl.com with it. You'll be invited to "Enter alias". Obvious aliases have already been bagged, and most characters are unusable (though hyphens are OK). In your place I'd first try "in-regards-to". Then you'll get a conveniently short and memorable link. (However, as it's a redirecting link, you won't be able to post it in a Wikipedia discussion, unless of course you obscure it with spaces or similar.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:15, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Or just use Wikimedia's own shortener m:Special:UrlShortener, instead of one from an external site. Other than that, can only agree with Hoary's comment about this being a very low-value way of improving the encyclopedia, assuming the change is even beneficial (something for which having consensus first would be a good idea). - You need to decide if you want to break this ground. No-one can make you do it. Getting consensus for doing things which affect thousands of articles is wise. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:47, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- if this is a monumental task, i can move on to other things. Iljhgtn (talk) 23:43, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- i am approved for AWB, but have not used it yet. this seems like it would be a good first usage if i was careful to not use it on instances appearing inside of a quote. what do you think? Iljhgtn (talk) 23:32, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Iljhgtn: There are over 10,000 articles containing "in regards to". You might want to discuss at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos. GoingBatty (talk) 22:47, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Tagishsimon is a sensible fellow, but the page they point us to is inane. Quote: "The phrase in regard to is correct—no “-s.” Although in regards to is often used in casual speech, it is considered a nonstandard phrase." No mention there of who considers it so and on what grounds. ("Language experts", and "because of some 'rule' they read somewhere", I fear.) It continues: "In regard to can be considered wordy, so try using a more concise synonym" -- yes, agreed. But then it gives as an example rewriting "My question is in regard to the job listing" as "My question
regards tois regarding the job listing". Uh ... I'm clapping with one hand. (Try "My question is about the job listing", or of course "I'm asking about the job listing"). -- Hoary (talk) 23:00, 19 November 2023 (UTC) Yet anothertypocorrected. (Sorry, Tagishsimon.) -- Hoary (talk) 23:37, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- I can only see "My question is regarding the job listing." not "My question regards to the job listing". So. Odd. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:09, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Meh. It's not engvar. 'regard' is a noncount noun [1] which does not take a plural. See also the ngram. Wiktionary is hopelessly unreliable, a dismal font of misinformation. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:01, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Your link says the plural is "regards" and that "as regards" is formal usage, so I am not sure what your point is. RudolfRed (talk) 23:11, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Let me help you out, RudolfRed. Words can have a number of different senses, and different senses have different grammatical rules. Regard, in the sense of friendly greetings, can be pluralised. Regard, as in 'care or concern for someone or something', cannot. Regards, as in 'as regards', is a verb. There's no lack of clarity on that page, but I appreciate it'll require you to rejig your thinking, so, hard. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:19, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- "Regard, as in 'care or concern for someone or something', cannot [be pluralized]". Except that we have good evidence that, in in regards to, it can. Google reports that theguardian.com has five thousand tokens of "in regards to". The Guardian doesn't have the highest reputation for copyediting, and Google hit counts don't have the highest reputation for meaningfulness; so let's suppose that there are just one thousand tokens there of intentional "in regards to". I submit that, like the item or not, this is good evidence of grammaticality. (As for my personal taste, I don't much like either in regard to or in regards to, but merely on stylistic grounds.) -- Hoary (talk) 23:50, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Theguardian.com also has 340,000 hits for "seperate" according to Google, but that doesn't make it correct (even discounting their ranking algorithm which will include pages which don't even have that term on the page). Most of the misfires on separate are probably letter writers, and that may be the case with the search you executed as well. Mathglot (talk) 02:09, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

- "In regard to" and "with regard to": Quoting Garner (2000): "The singular noun is correct. The plural form (as in with regards to and in regards to) is, to put it charitably, poor usage..." This is followed by three attestations of the plural form. This is followed by, "The acceptable forms are best used as introductory phrases. But even these may be advantageously replaced by a single word, such as concerning, regarding, or considering, or even in, about, or for. The plural regards is acceptable only in the phrase as regards." Bryan Garner spends nine column inches on this usage; Garner's Modern English Usage OUP (2000) p. 563–564. - Hello @IPs are people too and welcome to Wikipedia! I’d like to direct you to our sister project, Wikimedia commons (https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) that has thousands of photos available for download. You can also view the old versions of these files on commons. They also have a page that explains in detail how to download files from the site, if you’re unsure how: (https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Download_tools) I would personally recommend the Imker. Adding photos of people I have a COI with
Hi folks,
I've read WP:DISCLOSE and WP:COI but I just want to check. Someone I have a professional relationship with (my boss) is the subject of a Wikipedia article, and her article does not have a photo. Were I to get a photo of her (either taken myself or provided by her under an acceptable license), would I be able to add it myself if disclosed in the edit summary/talk page? Or would it be more appropriate to ask another contributor to handle it once I've facilitated the photo being acquired and licensing issues taken care of? MrSeabody (talk) 09:13, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hey, @MrSeabody. Generally we allow a person with a COI to add such a photo. We do want all articles to have an appropriate image, if one is available, and I always prefer the photo of a living person be one they actually like. To be completely on the safe side:
- Take the photo yourself (or have her take a selfie) and don't upload it anywhere else on the internet before uploading it to Wikipedia Commons
- At the article's talk page, open a new section and make a COI edit request, with a link to the file on Commons. If you ping me to that talk page, I'll be happy to take a look if someone else doesn't come along and help out before I get there.

New Artist Page
Hello, I am a new musical artist from Germany, and I would like a page for myself. I have looked at some tutorials online but I am kindda confused on what my next steps are. Can someone help? Thekidkaihan (talk) 09:53, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, @Thekidkaihan. I'm afraid Wikipedia isn't like social media; you have zero control over whether there's an article about you or what goes into that article. Unless there is significant coverage of you and your work in independent reliable sources, we can't create an article, and you actually shouldn't. There's information about this at WP:ABOUTME. Valereee (talk) 10:01, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia @Thekidkaihan! We appreciate your interest in Wikipedia, but we don't actually take direct "requests" for the creation of articles and we discourage people from writing or editing articles about themselves, their companies, their clients, or their products and services (for more about why, please see our policy on a conflict of interest. and our policy on Notability).
- However, you can suggest your article topic to Wikipedia editors by adding it to one of the lists here. Please note that you should add the title (in this case, your name) to the specific subject area listing where it best fits.
- And if you are willing to write the article yourself, disclose your own conflict-of-interest, and submit it for other editors to review, you can use our Article Wizard, located here to write it and then submit it to our Articles for Creation process where it can be considered for publication— the backlog there is really small right now.
- I hope this has been helpful. Again, thank you for your interest and don’t hesitate to contact me with any further questions! - 🔥𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆 (𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌)🔥 11:18, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Pind Sharif Dargah
I recently created Pind Sharif Dargah, i just started to create Pind Sharif, as both are different (one is shrine and other is village) but i saw that Pind Sharif is a deleted article which was created by a Blocked or banned user, how can i create it? Can i directly create it as i create other article or i have to go through Draft and AfC? Help -- Syed A. Hussain Quadri (talk) 13:28, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- You can go ahead and create the page, but if you want to be sure you can also create it as a draft and submit it through AFC just for a peer review. Any account which is at least autoconfirmed can create any page that is not protected or blacklisted. If any page doesn't align with Wikipedia's policies it may be deleted. We do not allow blocked or banned users to create new accounts to evade their bans, and if they do we can systematically delete any pages that they have created. As far as I can tell that is the only reason this article was deleted, so if it's a topic you want to write an article about you can go ahead.
- You'll see in the deletion log entry that the page was deleted by the administrator Explicit. If you're ever not sure if you can recreate a page, you can go to the talk page of the administrator who deleted it and ask them first. Good luck with your next article! It's highly recommended that you first gain experience and knowledge about Wikipedia by first editing existing articles in areas that interest you. Using the new user tutorial will help you as well. How can I search a GA article by any particular category I wish?
How can I search a GA article by any particular category I wish. For example, I need to get the list of all articles that have category Category:Glucocorticoids and are GA-class?
How can I search an article specifying a category and that it is a GA-class article?
If I specify Category:GA-Class_articles as a category in the Search, I get an error "Deep category query returned too many categories" and it doesn't find anything. Whether I specify two categories (Glucocorticoids AND GA-Class_articles) or just one category (GA-Class_articles) I get the same error "Deep category query returned too many categories". Only the non-GA category like Glucocorticoids works as a search category.
Please suggest a tool or instructions on how to search by category among GA articles to get the list of all GA articles that fit particular category? The subcategories like don't help because there are no such subcategory that I need. (Updated Maxim Masiutin (talk) 20:01, 20 November 2023 (UTC))Maxim Masiutin (talk) 19:09, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

- Thank you very much for your help!
- My initial question was improperly formatted.
- I used the category "GA-Class articles" which was not accepted in search, always giving the error "Deep category query returned too many categories".
- However, if I use the category "Good articles" instead, then the Wikipedia search works fine.
- However, the Petscan does not work correctly and gives a shorter list than Wikipedia.
- For example, if I get the list of articles having the following categories:
- Autosomal recessive disorders
- Good articles
- , Wikipedia returns 6 articles whereas Petscan returns only 4. Maxim Masiutin (talk) 20:16, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Set depth to 2 and you get 7 articles. --Tagishsimon (talk) 20:32, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Citing a non-English translation of another foreign language
Are there any parameters in "cite book", etc. that allow one to note when the source material is a non-English translation of another foreign language? For example, I recently created this article: one of its sources is in Spanish. However, its original language is actually German or Polish. In case anybody was wondering, this particular source has never been translated into English, although small portions of it have appeared quoted in a number of publications. (Also, although I'm a proficient German reader and can sort of make out Polish because of my knowledge of Russian and passing acquaintance of other Slavic languages, Spanish is my mother tongue, which is why I chose to use this translation. Anyway, I don't have the original language source available, whereas the Spanish translation is in my personal collection.) As always your help is very appreciated. Thank you! —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 20:19, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think so. The purpose of the citation is to point to the publication you used. Its purpose is not to point to the work of which your source was a translation. I guess if it is for some reason critical to convey details of the original work, you might have to provide two citations, by way of REF this book which is a translation of that book /REF. ---Tagishsimon (talk) 21:13, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- CurryTime7-24, yes, there is a param you can use for that:
|orig-date=
. First, you should use param|language=
to specify the language of the source you used (as you did in your citation). If that Spanish source was translated from Polish, you don't have to mention that, but if you want to, you can using param|orig-date=
as follows (example shows addition of translator params also):
- If you have access to the Polish edition and are citing that one in other parts of the article, so that you have both the Spanish and the Polish citations present, you can also link the two together if you wish. Mathglot (talk)

- Tagishsimon is right about reliability; but university news reports are usually about people and projects associated with the university. In considering whether to cite such a report, you need to think about whether it is being used to support information about something or somebody at the university (in which case it is probably not independent). Non-English sources are used often on Wikipedia, although English sources are naturally preferred for our readers to reference. Can someone help me find a picture to use for my first Wiki page
I'm looking for an image of Erik Hansen who plays for the St. Louis Battlehawks that would be allowed on my Wiki page. The one I uploaded got taken down. Footballfan145 (talk) 01:15, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Footballfan145. I hope that you now understand that you cannot upload copyrighted images, except under very narrow exceptions that do not apply here. I checked at Wikimedia Commons, and there are no photos of your football player there, although there are several photos of Erik Hansen (canoeist) who won several Olympic medals in the 1960s. I added one of those photos to the biography of the canoeist. You can go to a football game or a media opportunity and take a photo yourself. Or you can contact Hansen himself or the team, asking for a freely licensed photo. You can find more information at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Please be aware that this is a transaction with legal implications, and so it must be done correctly. Cullen328 (talk) 03:00, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Do freedom of panorama rights extend to a grocery store?
I’d like to upload an image I took of an advertisement for white elephant gifts in a grocery store. Would freedom of panorama rights apply here? Thanks in advance. Slamforeman (talk) 01:43, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- It depends on the country the photo was taken at. Since its an advertisement, it would fall under "2D art". I recommend seeing Commons:Freedom of panorama. Ca talk to me! 02:02, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Freedom of panorama has some info, it varies by country. Try asking at WP:MCQ along with more detail about your situation.
the United States freedom of panorama does not cover other artistic works still covered by copyright
so it may depend on the definition on "artistic" as it applies to the ad.RudolfRed (talk) 02:06, 21 November 2023 (UTC)- Ok, I will be sure to ask there, if my question isn’t answered here. Thanks for the recommendation. :) Slamforeman (talk) 02:25, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Slamforeman. Freedom of panorama various from country so just based on what you've posted above it's near impossible to say. Moreover, freedom of panorama typically applies to physical structures (e.g. buidlings) or artworks publicly displayed outdoors (e.g. statues in parks); it can sometimes apply to interior photography or interior displays (e.g. museum exhibits, in-store displays), but it also depends on the copyright status of whatever is being published. If by "advertisement" you mean a poster or other printed material showing white elephants displayed inside a grocery store, then I would say that your best best would be to assume that it is protected by copyright as explained here, here and here. While it's true that the copyright of a photo is generally considered to be owned by the person who takes it, taking a photograph of someone's else copyrighted work is generally considered to be a WP:Derivative work, which means that the copyright status of the photographed work also needs to be considered. Since Wikipedia generally requires that the images uploaded to it be within the public domain or as unencumbered by copyright restrictions as possible, you would most likely need to get the WP:CONSENT from whoever created the advertisement for it to be OK to upload a photo of it to Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:09, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you, I believe this answers my question, but in case it might help, the image was taken in Texas, in the United States. It is a poster that contains text that says “GET YOUR WHITE ELEPHANT
- GIFTS HERE! WHITE ELEPHANT
- GIFT CENTER” and depicts two cartoon white elephants, one of which is in the top right corner, and the other is hidden behind some cartoon presents.
- I doubt I would be able to contact the artist of the poster, because there was no contact information anywhere on the poster. Lastly, just to clarify, when I say white elephants gifts, I mean that the poster is advertising gifts for the white elephant gift exchange tradition.
- Best wishes, Slamforeman (talk) 02:41, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Slamforeman, if the poster consisted of no more than short text in a common font, it almost certainly would not be copyright protected, as long as you attributed the source. However, you report that the poster includes "cartoon white elephants". That changes things. Original artwork is fully protected by copyright, usually for 95 years. Cullen328 (talk) 04:04, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, that is very helpful. Shame I can’t upload it, but I very much appreciate your help. Thank you. Slamforeman (talk) 04:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

community on web
Do people edit articles to be intentionally wrong? Or is there a community trust on this site? Olivia.eckert.m (talk) 06:09, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Your first question, Olivia.eckert.m: Yes, unfortunately, some people do. The activity is called "vandalism". As for your second question, please explain what you mean by "community trust". -- Hoary (talk) 08:07, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Olivia.eckert.m Unconstructive edits can simply be reverted.
- Adding or changing content requires stating reliable sources per WP:PROVEIT. That reduces the addition of wrong content massively.
- Edits of inexperienced users are checked. Edits of experienced users are not patrolled, still might be challenged by 'normal' users. WikiPate (talk) 08:37, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Olivia.eckert.m There is useful guidance here. Wikipedia works because it has lots of editors and usually ends up with the wisdom of crowds. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:50, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Adding languages to an article
Hi, if I've created an article, and it already exists in other languages, what's the easiest way to display them on top of that article?
When I click on the 'Add languages' button on the top right, it gives me an option to translate the page or configure languages, but there isn't an option to link it to the existing articles (or I'm missing something here.
TIA. UMStellify (talk) 06:52, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @UMStellify The languages is a feature supported through Wikidata. To add the enwiki article to an existing group of articles, you will have to find the correct Wikidata entry. What you can do is to go wikidata.org and search for the corresponding entry. I see that one of the recent articles you have created is Ivana Sajko, searching wikidata yields d:Q10971609 from which you can add the enwiki entry at the Wikipedia box in the sidebar. You can also access the Wikidata item from the articles in the other wikis, just find the 'Wikidata item' link in the sidebar. – robertsky (talk) 07:31, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, cool. It worked. Thank you so much. UMStellify (talk) 07:38, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Hey,
Does a user get a notification if I click on "edit" on the user's talk page and include A_certain_username

Assumed the user has the standard non-changed notification settings. Or does the user only get a notification if i click on "add a topic" or "reply" on the user's talk page when i include this template?

Could it be that for receiving a notification, this template is not needed at all on a users talk page, if the user has "Edit to my user talk page" enabled in the users notifications preferences? - It looks like a user gets a notification for every edit on their talk page independently of using any templates.
- For receiving a notificaton this template seems only to be necessary for conversations outside of a users talk page. WikiPate (talk) 17:10, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @WikiPate: Agreed - it's not necessary to use reply to to notify a user about a post on their own user talk page. Some users post their notification preferences on the top of their user talk page. GoingBatty (talk) 17:40, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @WikiPate: Welcome to the Teahouse. If you go to Preferences → Notifications → Notify me about these events, you'll notice that the checkmark for receiving web notifications for edits made to one's talk page cannot be toggled off, so that any edit (including reversions) will be noted as an alert item with the icon under the icon at the top of the page.Users can also receive notifications under the icon without being pinged, but that's only for discussions that they're subscribed to. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:42, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Is this appropriate in an article?
An article about a relatively small German art exhibition has a large section filled with tables detailing the exhibitions finances? And another section detailing the names of every administration person involved. This seems like excess detail that isn't covered in an independent/secondary source.
Can any editors take a look? I'm not actually sure what guideline to cite when removing. Zenomonoz (talk) 07:22, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Zenomonoz. Have reliable sources called this art exhibition a
a relatively small German art exhibition
, or is that your own personal interpretation? The amount of detail to be included in an article about a "small" topic is not objectively quantifiable. All that detail needs to be verified, neutral and not undue. What is or is not undue is decided by policy-based discussions on the talk page of the relevant article, which is Talk: Freie Berliner Kunstausstellung. That is the first and best place to discuss the content dispute. Please start there. Cullen328 (talk) 07:37, 21 November 2023 (UTC)- I wrote the article in deWP, translated it and put the translation to enWP. It was worldwide the biggest art exhibition without curators on Messe Berlin. The asking man has special reasons for deleting as much as he can from articles I contributed. The conflict with him began in deWP where he was infinitly blocked yesterday. Andrea014 (talk) 07:47, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hmm after looking, Wikipedia guidelines actually do suggest against WP:INDISCRIMINATE detail, especially when they are from non-independent sources. Sure, it can take place on the talk page but teahouse is where you go when you're unsure about the guidelines. Looks like I've found it myself. Zenomonoz (talk) 07:55, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Zenomonoz, WP:ABOUTSELF may also be relevant. We are not here to replicate an org's own publications. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:43, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Given the dispute between the two editors (cf. AIV: Zenomonoz reported by Andrea014) my very strong advice to Zenomonoz is that they should walk away from the Freie Berliner Kunstausstellung article (and any other work done by Andrea014), because their criticism of such work looks like bad faith. If there is an issue with the tables in that article, some uninvolved editor will, sometime, come across them and deal with them. --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:25, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, this was resolved. For passing editors: Ive volunteered to not edit the page. Cheers. Zenomonoz (talk) 14:10, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you!
- It really is not possible to understand the conflict and my bad faith if you do not know its beginning in the German Wikipedia where Zenomonoz was blocked infinitly. Updated link to conflict management. Andrea014 (talk) 08:23, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

- @Zanziver Don't submit your draft yet, or it will be rapidly declined. It does not comply with our policy on biographies which requires that all facts are backed up by inline citations to reliable sources. From a brief look at the sources you do supply, most are by Velikanov himself. We need several that are about him (see this advice) to demonstrate his wikinotability. - Michael, thanks a lot for the feedback! Sadly I submitted before reading your reply. There are many sources which are not online and not in web archive, so we used saved PDFs. Zanziver (talk) 22:10, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Zanziver You can continue to edit draft articles while they are waiting for review, although I note that Draft:Andrey Velikanov is currently declined because of all the external links. Sources do not need to be online (see WP:OFFLINE) provided they have been published by a reliable source. In listing his publications, you don't need to link to actual copies but just need full biographical details formatted in the templates cite book and cite journal etc. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:30, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Difficulty with the Annotated link template
I have difficulty with the "anl" template (Template:Annotated link) when I use it for "drug-eluting stent".
- drug-eluting stent – Medical implant
It gives me the following: drug-eluting stent – Artery of the coronary circulation which transports blood into and out of the cardiac muscle
However, the description is wrong, it took "Artery of the coronary circulation which transports blood into and out of the cardiac muscle" from another wikidata item, it should have taken the description "a medical stent that releases drug that inhibits cellular growth into the stented area".
When you go to drug-eluting stent and then click a link to wikidata item, you will get to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3973120 that does not have this description. Why it did not take description from correct wikidata item?
For the other items, the "anl" template works correctly. Maxim Masiutin (talk) 13:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Maxim Masiutin: The Drug-eluting stent article has two short descriptions. First one at the top, as normal. The second is below the Clinical indications for use header & that's where the template is pulling the description from. how to add my business detail to Wikipedia
hi friends, i am new here, can someone help me with how to add my business detail to Wikipedia, (how to list it on Wikipedia). thanks in advance. Sajjadnoorwala (talk) 14:51, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Sajjadnoorwala, and welcome to the Teahouse. Wikipedia is not a web host for your company. It is not a place to advertise for it, either. —asparagusus (interaction) sprouts! 14:54, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- There are billions of people on the planet and millions of companies. Most do not have articles about them here on Wikipedia because they are not wikinotable. You have a clear conflict of interest in trying to promote your business here and while it is not prohibited that you create a draft (via WP:AfC) you must follow the mandatory disclosure laid out at WP:PAID. It will be difficult for you to write an acceptable draft, not least since you have no experience of writing on Wikipedia. Also it might not be a good idea. Please read carefully the information at the links we have provided. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:41, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Sajjadnoorwala. Like many people, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is. If there are enough reliable independent sources about your business to base an article on (in Wikipedia jargon, if your business is notable), then somebody could write that article. If there are not, then no article is possible.
- If an article is written, it will not belong to you, it will not necesarily say what you want it to say, and it should be based almost entirely on what those independent sources say about your business (bad as well as good), not on what you say or want to say. See WP:PROUD. ColinFine (talk) 15:44, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I experienced a third negative review of my draft. The last reviewer didn’t leave any comment and did not reply to my questions. I am wondering, since my subject does meet four criteria of notability, why my draft still needs additional sources. It is very difficult to know as unreliable but they do appear on another serious Wikipedia page ( on th Museum of Applied Arts of Vienna) so I don’t understand why they are not accepted on my draft. Could you please help me with this issue? I have a ph.D. and I am used to very strict, clear and transparent rules for sources reliability. Here, I feel left in the dark. Especially, I feel that the books quoted (not available online) are not considered as reliable. Although they are actually more serious sources. Thank you very much for your help Catherine Lemieux (talk) 14:58, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

- @Catherine Lemieux just a note, if you are responding to Vanderwaalforces on your talk page, chances are that they may not see your additions to your own talk page as they may not have receive a notification or seen your talk page on their Watchlist, which can be quite a busy one. In the future, you can notify a registered editor by linking their username in your reply. If you are using the Reply Tool, an "@" will trigger a dropdown list of editors from which you can search the editor's username from.
- Alternatively, you can "mention" a user , i.e. Example by making an edit with a link to their user page (writing User:Example, Example, Example, Example, Example, Example, or Example) and signing the edit using four tildes (~~~~). The user "Example" will then get a notification saying where they were mentioned. See Help:Notifications for more info. – robertsky (talk) 16:15, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Does Draft:Merrick McCartha meet WP:NACTOR?
Surprised I could not find more on them for the work they've done, but it does look like they meet the minimum requirements for WP:NACTOR. I would like further opinions though. Filmforme (talk) 19:49, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Filmforme: Welcome to the Teahouse! I suggest starting a conversation at Draft talk:Merrick McCartha detailing how he meets the minimum requirements for WP:NACTOR. Invite the editors who declined the draft to join the conversation (and maybe some Teahouse editors will join too). Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 21:07, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Rename page: Spark Arrestor -> Spark Arrester
The most common name for the device described at Spark arrestor is "Spark Arrester"
The article has all the correct usage, but the title is incorrect The page cannot be renamed since an incorrect rename is already in place.
How do I request someone with page renamer rights to fix this?
(And also answer the 2011 request in Talk:spark arrestor to fix it). Remaker (talk) 23:09, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Removing old page from the wayback machine
Good afternoon, I am trying to get old social media pages taken down by the wayback machine on internet archive. They arent offensive in any way, just embarassing because I was much younger when I made those accounts.
I emailed them a few days ago but I haven't heard back yet. I am not sure if they got it or if it went to spam.
Has anyone had any luck getting old tweets or other social media posts taken down?
Any advice would be incredibly helpful, thank you! 2601:41:C280:2C50:B5EF:EF43:94B1:43D7 (talk) 01:19, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

My edit shows up in my log but not when I access the article.
The article I edited is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natasha,_Pierre_%26_The_Great_Comet_of_1812. I added the regional staging in Atlanta in November 2023. The edit shows up in the history as being done on November 10. But the edit doesn't show in the actual article. What am I doing wrong or not doing?! AtlantaAH (talk) 01:28, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @AtlantaAH: It looks like it was reverted by another editor with the summary of "No inline URLs and the theatre has no Wikipedia article". You should discuss it on the article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 01:34, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @AtlantaAH: I've re-added it. user:Ponsonby100's removal was rather WP:POINTY. The addition should not have had an inline external link (which might have been removed leaving the underlying sentence in place), but the idea that "has no Wikipedia article" has any bearing on whether or not to keep the sentence is fallacious. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:42, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Hi AtlantaAH. If you take a look at the page history for Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, you see that the edit you made was undone the following day by another editor named Ponsonby100, who left an edit summary stating "No inline URLs and the theatre has no Wikipedia article" explaining why they undid your edit. External links (links to websites outside of Wikipedia) are generally not allowed to be embedded into the bodies Wikipedia articles as explained here and here; moreover, Wikipedia articles aren't intended to include all information available about a subject as explained here. An article about a play, for example, might include content about various productions of the play, but these are probably going to be limited to only those productions performed by groups or performed at venues considered to be Wikipedia notable. My guess is that Ponsonby100 felt that the Horizon Theatre Company did not meet the criteria for being mentioned in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812#Regional and thus removed any mention of it. If you'd like further clarification of this, you may start a discussion about the removal at Talk:Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 since article talk pages a typically the best place to discuss edits made to articles. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:48, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the time and attention you gave this. I appreciate the feedback and information. AtlantaAH (talk) 11:23, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

What can I do to edit on restricted pages?
Can someone tell me how this works? is it like you can do edits but before there set in stone one of the qualified users has to make sure it's not some toll edit? if so how can I became one of the qualified users? External Links Library (talk) 05:48, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi External Links Library. Wikipedia pages are protected for a variety of reasons. When you try to edit such a page, you should see the reason why it has been protected in a pink box near the top of the page and the type of protection being applied. There's also a table in at WP:PP#Comparison table that further clarifies how page protection works. Now, if you're still unable to figure things out after looking at that table, post the name of the page you want to edit here at the Teahouse. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:14, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- In short, to edit Semi-protected articles, you would require an account that is at least four days old and have made at least ten edits. For Extended confirmed protected articles, account needs to be 30 days old and have made at least 500 edits Jeraxmoira (talk) 06:17, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @External Links Library: If you'd like to make a change to a protected page, you can post your request on the article's talk page, using the SPER, EPER, or FPER for semi-, edit-confirmed, or fully-protected pages, respectively. GoingBatty (talk) 06:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @External Links Library Just to clarify: all Wikipedia editors are considered equally qualified and we assume good faith. However, some articles do get vandalised, which is by definition malicious, and the protection is to help prevent that. Unfortunately, it sometimes has the side-effect of making it more difficult for editors with fewer edit-counts and history here to make contributions but everyone can suggest improvements via the article's Talk Page, whether using the specific templates or just as a new comment. Does Wikipedia updates alert and notification status in a web browser while the browser is idle with a Wikipedia page open?
I use Firefox for Windows and I have alerts and notifications configured. Still, Wikipedia only shows me alert and notification updates when I refresh a page or open a new page or do some action that updates a page, such as navigation or editing. While a wikipedia page is just open and the browser is running idle, no new alerts appear (until I refresh a page). I expected it to periodically check notifications such as via a javascript. Does Wikipedia update alert and notification status in a web browser while the browser is idle with a Wikipedia page open? Please share your experience. I read the documentation about alerts and notifications and didn't receive a reply to this question. Maxim Masiutin (talk) 06:27, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- From my experience, on chrome/ windows, I don't think it updates automatically unless we refresh the page. I do receive an email for alerts and notification though. Only the recent changes tab has the live updates option as far as I know. Cheers <3 Jeraxmoira (talk) 06:34, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- The Your alerts and Your notices button located on the top right, after your username, does refresh when you click on it. I checked it now when Tenryuu replied here. This means that you don't have to refresh the page but just click on those buttons to get the alerts and notifications updated! Jeraxmoira (talk) 07:30, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Maxim Masiutin: Welcome to the Teahouse. As far as I can tell, there's no option to perform live updates for alerts and notifications, and I personally don't see a need for a tab on Wikipedia to hog more memory than it needs to. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 07:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Maxim Masiutin Alerts and notifications don't automatically update on a tab but Special:watchlist can be configured to give live updates, with the message "View new changes since [timestamp]". I think that this behaviour is the default for the watchlist. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:40, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Citing an online dissertation
Hello. I need to cite a dissertation I found online. I've found Template:Cite thesis but when I insert the template into a page, it just inserts the text into the body of the article, instead of creating a cited reference. You can see it at Roland Arpin under the section "Later career" immediately after "Arpin later said:" Where am I going wrong? Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 08:25, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Oona Wikiwalker If you're using Visual Editor, type "<ref" in. It will automatically bring up a sub-menu of sorts for adding citations. Go to the "Manual" tab, click "Basic" and then add the "Cite thesis" template to the text box which pops up.
- If you're using Source Editor, enclose the template with a "" at the end.
- I have made it a cited reference for you. WritingAboutCreepypastas (talk) 08:45, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Original Research or not?
I am currently working on my first article about a musical group (they do not have a wiki page).
First of all, I was able to organize an informal interview with this group and gathered information about the group themselves. Given that this information is unpublished (note that I do have all the evidence and messages we sent to each other), I was wondering if this would come under original research, and if it did, is there any way to not break this rule without having to publish this? AGB.Music (talk) 08:49, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Wikipedia articles merely collate published information. Original research will not be accepted. Please read WP:YFA and WP:42. Shantavira|feed me 09:12, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Would publishing this information online (with the evidence) allow me to use this? AGB.Music (talk) 09:14, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- No, because you posting it online somewhere would still be original research. If a third party conducts an interview and publishes it in a reputable magazine with editoral control and fact checking, that might be possible to use, but interviews do not contribute to notability(though they can be used for other purposes), because they are not an independent source about themselves.
- What is your connection to this group to be able to interview them? 331dot (talk) 09:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Indeed, what is this connection of yours that allows them to use for their publicity the photograph of them that you say is your own work? -- Hoary (talk) 09:25, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Irrespective of that, you can't use unpublished information you obtained via the internet, as no-one can verify what was said, a core Wikipedia policy. Article move
Hi, I am here after the person who closed the move did not perform any move but mentioned that the move was performed. here. I have also approched the person on his talk page but there is no response yet here. What is the right approch to revert the move since the user that performed the move in the first place did not follow the consistency as discussed on the respective Wikiproject and the same was notified by another user to him. here for the actual move of the page:3 456legend(talk) 08:57, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Also this:here, where the original mover did not provide a reasonable justification for the move. 456legend(talk) 09:00, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi 456legend. Sometimes there is a technical issue which prevents a page being moved and some extra work is needed, or sometimes the person who closes later finds a reason that the move shouldn't be performed, although they should explain why in that situation. Or sometimes we just get distracted or make mistakes. I've asked BilledMammal to clarify, and if they still don't reply then I will perform the move myself later today.
- In the future, this should qualify as an uncontroversial technical request, and you can ask for someone to perform the move at WP:RM/TR. Thanks. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 14:39, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Translation
Hey! I have translated an article from Hindi Wikipedia (लाला हनुमन्त सहाय) about a great Indian freedom fighter Lala Hanumant Sahay. The draft is this - Lala Hanumant Sahay. How can I submit this translation draft? Please guide me! TheProEditor11 (talk) 12:13, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @TheProEditor11 There are two problems. The main one is that your draft cites no sources, which on the English Wikipedia is an immediate "fail" because we insist by policy that readers be able to verify what is written. The second is that you have not followed the guidance at WP:TRANSLATE which says that you must credit the original source. You can do that now by an edit summary or a comment on the draft's Talk Page. Submission is easy: there is a big blue button at the top of the draft to do that: but ensure you resolve the issues I've mentioned first. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:28, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

- ElecAp2018 First, Teahouse Hosts are here to advise, but not author or co-author. Second, I see you have created a very short draft at Draft:NVent Electric plc, submitted it and had it declined. The refs are insufficient to determine if the company is Wikipedia notable. See WP:NCORP for guide for articles about companies, and WP:42 for what constitues good references. General advice
Hi teahouse!,
I recently created an article and it was accepted, I was wondering if you could go over it and tell me how to improve it.
Thanks! Geardona (talk) 15:19, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- I would encourage you to give it a review looking specifically for missing or duplicated punctuation. The page should likely be moved to 1970 Berrechid, Morocco, crash with the extra MOS:GEOCOMMA, and that phrase fixed in a few other places. - Most likely, although the current name was implemented by the AFC reviewer so I am not going to overrule them. I might look for consensus to move it to that. Geardona (talk) 15:42, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

- @Geardona: Welcome to the Teahouse, and congratulations on your article being accepted! I tweaked the punctuation and a reference, and added some categories. The article has a orphan template at the top, which you can resolve by adding links from other articles to 1970 Berrechid, Morocco crash. I see there's a link from Sud Aviation Caravelle#Incidents and accidents to your article, which is a good start. You might want to consider adding information and links from Berrechid and 1970 in aviation#April. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:41, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
