On April 13, 2014, shortly after midnight,[1] a bus traveling from Veracruz to Mexico City collided with a broken-down tractor-trailer and caught fire, killing at least 36 people. There were four survivors.[2] The truck had been on the shoulder of the highway prior to being hit by the bus.[3] A Veracruz Civil Defense Agency official said the victims probably burned to death inside the bus.[1] Enrique Pena Nieto, Mexico's president, expressed his condolences to the victims' families via Twitter.[2]
