[[Carl Koller]] (1857-1944) was a friend of [[Sigmund Freud]] and a physician that discovered [[local anaesthesia]] by [[cocaine]], and he is responsible for [[cocaine]]s adoption into the practice of minor surgery during the late 1800's .

It is notable that [[Freud]] and not [[Carl Koller]] would have been considered the discoverer of the utility of [[cocaine]] in minor surgeries if romance had not interfered with [[Freud]] 's work . Apparently [[Freud]] didn't begrudge his fiancee for his failure to enter the temple of fame in his youth .

[[Carl Koller]] became a proficient [[opthamologist]] , but shunned attention for his achievements and did not indulge in autobiography .
