The PlayStation 4 (officially abbreviated as PS4) is an upcoming video game console and it is the fourth home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment and the successor to the PlayStation 3 as part of the PlayStation series.[3][4] The PlayStation 4 will compete with Nintendo's Wii U, and any other consoles that may be announced, as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles. The console was revealed and confirmed at a press conference on February 20, 2013, with a release date set for Holiday 2013.

History

Sony contacted developers several years before the PlayStation 4's announcement, asking them what features they would like to see. While not explicitly stating that they were developing a new console, developers tended to understand what Sony meant.[5]

In February 2013, Sony introduced a website teasing a major announcement, slated for February 20. The announcement event took place in New York and featured the unveiling of details about the console, as well as games slated for release on it.[3][4] The announcement was streamed live through the streaming service Ustream.

Hardware

The design of the console has not yet been revealed. However, partial technical specifications about the console have been announced.[3][4]

The system will feature an 8-core AMD x86 64-bit central processing unit (CPU) codenamed "Jaguar"[6]. The graphics processing unit also designed by AMD, capable of 1.84 TeraFLOP/s, will be integrated onto the CPU die. It will also include dedicated graphics technology for seamless compression and decompression of video media, as well as support suspending and resuming games by putting the system into sleep mode. A dedicated secondary chip for background tasks will also be included, designed to allow the system to update and download additional content even while in sleep mode.

The PlayStation 4 will include 8GB of GDDR5 system memory. Memory will be unified, meaning that the console lacks dedicated video RAM; all RAM is shared between processing and graphics capabilities similar to the architecture found in the Xbox 360.[citation needed]

The read-only optical drive will read Blu-ray discs and DVDs.[7] It will feature 802.11 b/g/n network connectivity.[7] USB 3.0 is included, as is Bluetooth 2.1.[7]

A hard drive will be included, although Sony has not yet announced the size.[7]

Companion devices

The PlayStation Vita can be used as a third screen device (Sony are using it as the flagship third screen device) for streaming video directly from the console to the PlayStation Vita.[8] If a game supports remote play this allows for a game to be played remotely.[8]

A PlayStation App will allow certain functionality on mobile devices.[7]

Social features

The DualShock 4 controller includes a "SHARE button."[7] Pressing this button allows the player to cycle through the last several minutes of gameplay to select a clip appropriate for sharing. Video can be uploaded directly from the console, either to websites, or another Playstation Network user.

Controllers and accessories

At Sony's PlayStation Meeting on February 20, 2013, the DualShock 4 was announced as the PlayStation 4's controller.[3][4] It is similar to the DualShock 3, with several new features. One new feature is a built-in touch pad on the front of the controller. A dedicated "SHARE button"[7] will allow players to upload video from their gameplay experiences. There is a light bar used to communicate with a dual camera attachment; the external camera attachment perceives movement and depth by using the controller's light bar. The controller also features a 3.5mm headphone jack.

PlayStation Network

The PlayStation Network will allow players access to a variety of services, from the PlayStation Store to Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited.[7]

PlayStation Store

Customers can browse titles on the PlayStation Store and stream games via Gaikai to try them out.[7]

Software

Services

The PlayStation 4 will feature several services from third-party vendors, such as Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.[9]

Backwards compatibility

The PlayStation 4 hardware will not include the ability to natively play or emulate PlayStation 3 titles. This is a consequence of moving away from the Cell architecture of the Playstation 3, in favor of x86 for the Playstation 4.

While not available at launch, there is a plan to launch a Cloud-based streaming service via Gaikai, Sony's recently-purchased Cloud company, to play Playstation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 games via it's streaming service, at some point in the lifecycle of the Playstation 4.[1][2]

Downloadable games

The system will feature downloadable games, some of which may be played before they have finished downloading. This is accomplished via the system's secondary background processor.[10]
