Serrano High School is a public high school in the California High Desert community of Phelan, California.[4] It serves students from Phelan, Wrightwood and Piñon Hills. It is part of the Snowline Joint Unified School District. The school is named for the Serrano people. Its mascot is the Diamondback.

The school has been called "the Stanford of the High Desert" because of its traditionally superior academic achievement. Some 20 percent of its students are drawn by this reputation to attend from outside the district.[7] However, there have been concerns about safety and possible racial tension at the school.[8]

In 2009 the school experimented with very large classes (more than 100 students per class) for some college-preparatory seniors. The goal is to prepare students for college-style classes as well as to free up teacher time for enrichment-type programs.[9]

The high school began a tough new tardiness policy in 2006 when administrators decided to crack down on lateness. "In one two-week period, before the new policy, we had 1,387 tardies in one day," school official Mike Tropila said. "Teachers were having to restart their classes over and over as students came in." After the new policy started, the tardies went down to "seven to 15 in the course of a day." Students who were late for their classes were summoned, with their parents, to appear in court on truancy charges. Some pupils found guilty had to pay fines and do cleanup work on the roads. The district later "tweaked its policy so that the penalties get progressively tougher, with the citation coming only after the fifth tardy."[10]

Rankings

Serrano High School was nationally ranked #1,607 for best high schools for the 2009-2010 school year according to US News. With a student teacher ratio of 27:1, Serrano pulled a 21.5 on the college readiness index. Serrano was also ranked 338th within California.[11]
