Brahmanbaria[3] (Template:Lang-bn, [brammɔnbaɾie̯a])[4] is a historical city of Bangladesh in the Chittagong Division.[5] Brahmanbaria is one of the oldest municipalities in Bangladesh, and was established in 1769. Brahmanbaria was declared a district headquarters in 1984. It is the capital of Brahmanbaria District, the largest and most popular administrative district headquarters of Bangladesh. Its municipality area has a population of 168,636 according to the 2011 Census. It was part of greater Comilla City until 1984.
Geography
Brahmanbaria is located in the East-Central region of Bangladesh.
Administrative
Brahmanbaria was given city status in 1984. The city boundaries contain Sadar Municipality, 12 Wards, 78 Mahallas, and 36 villages.[6]

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Brahmanbaria has a population of 168,636.[7]
History
Brahmanbaria has a long history stretching back to British colonial rule. A few leaders of the Muslim league were from Brahmanbaria. Soldiers from Brahmanbaria also contributed to the liberation war of Bangladesh. The grave of "Birsershtho Mostofa Kamal" is located in Akhaura which is a nearby city.
Economy
Brahmanbaria is a small city but important to the economy of Bangladesh as the city is a hub of both rail and highway activity.

Brahmanbaria also provides gas for all of Bangladesh. The government of Bangladesh is also making plans to export gas to India. Titas Gas is one of major companies in the Bangladesh economy.
Climate
The climate of Brahmanbaria is very similar to other cities of Bangladesh. Floods are a major concern for people in Brahmanbaria, as the city has suffered from flooding for four times in a decade. Tornados and the monsoon Kaalboishakhi jhor hit almost every year.
Culture
Brahmanbaria has a rich culture dating back to early history. The celebration of Pohela Boishakh is popular in the city. Both Hindu and Muslim traditions influence the culture of Brahmanbaria.
The celebration of Ekushey February on International Mother Language Day is also popular. People give flowers to the monument of Shahid Minar in respect who died in Bengali language movement.
Education
Education has been improving in Brahmanbaria. A few decades ago the literacy rate was only around 36%, now it's near 70%. Trade schools are attracting more and more young people.
