The efficiency of service can be looked at form multiple angles. Does the motive behind service less than its effectiveness? I will be exploring just that in this paper by evaluating the net benefit to a community and its lasting impact on the individual performing mandatory versus voluntary service. I was drawn to this topic after listening to Tovia Smith’s podcast, ‘Selfish’ Giving: Does It Count If You Get In Return?. Smith interviews many professionals on their opinion on service done for personal gain. In the article, Community Service, published by the Center for Justice and Reconciliation, they define mandatory community Service as restorative justice for offenders. The Center for Justice and Reconciliation leads a reader to believe that offenders doing community service is no different than when a high school student does it for a college application. I believe that the Center for Justice and Reconciliation is correct that offenders and high school students both partake in mandatory community service but for different reasons. High school students use service to get into college while offenders use service to make amends with the community they have harmed. Both Smith and the Center for Justice and Reconciliation agree that service is good but differ on what makes it efficient. While I agree with Smith's main argument surrounding service, I believe that community service remains effective when you evaluate the motives, net benefit to community, and a lasting impact
Volunteerism is a path to responsible citizenship. Volunteering is a form of generous behavior, with a goal of providing help to others, a group, an organization, a cause, or the community at large without expectation of accolades or material reward (Musick, 2008, p 3). Volunteer work encourages good citizenship. It builds trust with others and public institutions. Trusting people are more likely to get involved in leadership positions or even politics. It gets individuals involved by letting them meet a wider range of people, then learning more about local issues and legislation. Volunteer work teaches civic skills, which can then be used in the political arena, and help individuals become aware of social problems needing solutions (p 460-461).
In life, sometimes men act fearless and manly in order to impress the girl to win her over with his masculinity. But what type of machismo attracts woman, the external or internal manliness? Apparently neither method works in the case of Brett in The Sun Also Rises where both Cohn and Jake reflect the two different aspects of this masculinity. Hemingway does have an attitude on which one is preferable, but alas neither of them gets the girl at the end. Throughout the novel, Hemingway creates a negative tone towards Cohn’s external manhood and a positive tone towards Jake internal manhood.
Service was really good apart from them forgetting about our bread on the table until our starters had came out we noticed this because everyone else had had there bread before the starters and we never. They served everything really well they never leaned over anyone to serve someone else even though the chairs were close to the window the still managed to get round them to serve them the food. You could tell they had a lot of training and experience with this because they done everything wonderfully. They were also good at keeping a eye on how full peoples glasses were and if they were nearly empty the came and filled it up. The silver served each course and explained what was in each one.
I helped with the veterans for my hours it was really a lot of fun they needed help with transporting them back a forth to the lunchroom and taking them to activities they really love people coming up there to see them because nobody cares if they're up there and they never go to see them. They love to see strangers faces even if they don't know you. They would love to tell you stories about how they was young and how they grew up or doing things in the military. They was this one guy he told me how his family was poor and all they had was a field of corn to their name so he wanted to go to the military and make a better life for himself and he said he killed hitler himself and that he was the one who meet george washington and queen elizabeth
Community service should be required because it prepares you for some thing you will need in life such as leadership skills, responsibility, time management, and the will to work with others. For students in high school they have lots of obstacles that can keep them from doing what they love or effecting there upcoming lives or enjoying their community. Some people never realize how much there communities need them till they the one who need a helping hand (khan 1).
What does community service mean? Community service, to me, means bettering the community with volunteering at local places, business, or helping the people themselves. Community services is very important due to most of the things in a community such as parks, food banks, etc. being ran/used by the community.
Adopting the meta-leadership solutions to leadership training would allow for integration of many actors into the process, starting with the line officers who need to be socialized to the needs of professional development that is not always initiated by the organization, followed by the responsibility, on the part of the supervisors, to reach out to external bodies and engage them in the delivery of the ongoing leadership development (Haberfeld, 2013, p. 7). The following diagram below illustrates the five dimensions of meta-leadership.
As a prospective scholar, I wish to adhere to the definition of the Shawn Carter Foundation’s core philosophy of service. Through activities of service within the school and community, I have began the foundation of the inspirational person I dreamt of becoming. Being actively involved has granted me with the image of a dedicated and caring individual, and also a service-oriented leader.
It is interesting that you brought up the programs that assist with homeless students on campus. I spoke with one of the Texas Workforce representatives a few weeks ago and she informed me about many programs that give homeless youth the opportunity to “drop by” when they are in need of a temporary place to go during the day. Although these services are limited they are very beneficial for those students struggling with finding a place to go in between school and where they call “home”.
Often times when you’re looking to do community service, you don’t have to look far. It is as simple as grabbing a garbage bag, putting on some gloves, and going out to pick up trash in the ditches on the side of the roads. Another way you can get community service hours is through our school principal. He has lists of numbers to call if you’re interested in helping out anywhere. People always are calling him to try and get volunteers to help them. They go to him because he knows all of us young and strong people. Personally, I would go to my mom if I needed to do community service. My mom is the president of the Patriots Athletic Club, and she is always looking for volunteers to help out in the concession stand during school events. I help
On average, when people think about community service, they assume that volunteering is just ‘hours we need to be able to graduate’ and that is it. Community service is more than just hours; community service is based on the acts performed by someone with the purpose of helping or bringing benefits to his or her community. People frequently compare community service as a punishment since it is often offered to small-time offenders as an alternative to fines or jail time. However, community service is the vital force to many communities since they depend on the service made by the volunteers
I have been fortunate enough to live my entire life in the city of Brentwood, TN. A lot of stereotypes come to mind when telling people where I live my everyday life. Such as, money, spoiled kids, nice cars, selfishness, and many others. Every so often you find those people who don’t care about what kind of car they drive, or what brand they’re wearing. Although this type of community surrounds me every day, I have always chosen to give back. Giving back to the community is one of my favorite things to do. Not only do I give back to the community, but I also help with big organizations worldwide. I have been working with a service group since I was in the 10th grade. Every year 8,000 is raised to make one boy or girls wish come true. This is
In Maryland, 75 hours of community service are required for students to graduate. Getting in the way of many after school activities, students should not be required to have community service hours to get a diploma.
Nowadays, it is very difficult to get a job without a College Diploma. Our ever-increasing demands on student’s academic performances have insured well-educated adults, but what we have failed to focus on is the vital component of volunteerism as an integral part of rearing well-rounded adults. College students should be required to complete a year of community service/volunteer work before they can graduate, in order to create mature and caring adults and versatile future leaders. By mandating all College students across the United States of America to add another year to their studies and use this year for community service/volunteer work only, we will be able to increase their knowledge of community need, civic responsibility, and allow
After graduating with a degree in a specified profession, giving back to the community is one of the most important tasks an individual can do to fully expand on their degree. After graduating college as an educated person, giving back to society for me would include, joining community clubs such as Kiwanis, Rotary, The Chamber of Commerce, and many more community bettering* clubs. My responsibility as an educated person would be to go out into the real world and better the community around me, building better foundations for businesses, creating a better town for people to live in, and supporting a local charity in need.
