The concept of progression and development was one quite unique to Greek civilization in the ancient world, and is quite a new re-invention at the enlightenment.

The vast majority of societies for the vast majority of time haven't had this push for development. They have generally reached a fairly comfortable level of existence, and remained satisfied with it. The concept of progress is so deeply ingrained in post-enlightenment Western culture that we now cannot conceive that this is the exception to the historical norm.

Of course whether the genie could ever be put back into the bottle is another matter entirely.(less)
