The chase is on…

Rough Riders, Book 11

Bull rider Chase McKay has finally landed in a pile too big to charm his way out of. Caught with his pants down, he finds himself bucked right off the PBR tour until he can get his act together.

Hollywood actress Ava Dumond became the tabloids’ favorite target when her longtime boyfriend was outed as gay. Now she wants a place to lay low and a chance to prove to herself that she can satisfy a red-blooded man between the sheets. The sexy, rugged cowboy she finds holed up in her Wyoming hideaway seems like the answer to her every fantasy.

But Chase has sworn off women. Forever. Or at least a month. Whichever comes first.

When they take to the road to get Chase more hands-on bull riding experience, they have every intention of keeping their hands off each other. But the two headstrong stars quickly end up riding a hot and heady rodeo circuit all their own—until the press gets wind of their affair. When the dust clears and the lights of the paparazzi fade, are they ready to give up chasing the dream for a chance of finding forever?

Wow! I was surprised by how much I loved this book, because as soon as shallow me read this line: "...no man wanted to admit that five-foot-seven-inch Chase McKay had taken on..." I said "What? Chase is only 5'7"?" But my heroes all have to be tall! Well, at least taller than me! Now how am I going to enjoy this book knowing Chase is only 5' 7"?

So I convinced myself, maybe it would be okay, because surely the heroine will be shorter than him, right? But no! The heroine, Hollywood actress and heiress Ava Cooper is 5' 10" Oh no, shades of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman...

Chase McKay...
jonathanpelissie

I continued to read on, convinced that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the latest from one of my favorite erotic series, that I wouldn't be able to stop thinking about short, dark and handsome Chase's vertical challenge...but guess what? The more I read the more I fell in love with the story and with Chase and Ava, and Chase's height didn't make a fig of difference--except that it added to the story, made him a little vulnerable.

So just a brief plot summary: Chase McKay is a 28-year-old professional bull rider. He was last year's champ, but this year too many easy women, too many excuses and not enough time buckling down has made this year a disaster. When Chase is caught in a compromising position (with two "buckle-bunnies"), he is suspended from the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) and ordered to get his act together. Chase realizes his career is at stake and retreats to his cousin Kane's Wyoming ranch to hide out from the scandal and to work on what's wrong with his bull riding. He vows to get serious about his career again and to stay away from women--for at least a month. And that trailer on the property should do just fine...

Chase does this for a living...
Photobucket

But then along comes sexy Hollywood actress Ava Cooper, looking to hide out from her own scandal. Heiress Ava has forged a respectable career as an actress, but her love life has hit the skids. Her boyfriend was caught with another man, and it's hit all the gossip rags. Now the paparazzi is after Ava, and she'd like to lay low until it all blows over. She asks her friend Ginger Paulson McKay (Raising Kane if she can hide out at her Wyoming ranch. Maybe she can also find a sexy cowboy who would like a no strings affair, since Ava's confidence took a hit when she found out her boyfriend prefers men to her. Isn't there a little trailer on the property that she can use?

Well you know what happens--Chase and Ava end up sharing the same trailer, sparks fly, lust is in the air, and Chase tries valiantly to keep to his promise (no women for a month!) Alright, so there will be no sex, but they can be friends, right? Chase and Ava set off on the road, with Chase entering as many small bull-riding events (under an assumed name) and Ava as his videographer, filming his rides so Chase can diagnose his riding flaws. Will the time spent together on the road lead to something more than just friendship between these wildly attractive people?

Wow wow wow, the sexual tension was off the charts in this one. Ava was one lusty woman, and she wanted Chase bad. She didn't care that he was shorter than her either. She liked what she saw (beautiful blue eyes, handsome, square-jawed face, 8-pack abs, and those arms...)and she wanted it. And of course Chase wanted Ava too, but he was serious about getting his career back on track. I liked their flirty, funny friendship; I loved how they opened up to each other as friends, loved how honest they were with each other--I thought this friendship really paved the way for a big romance, and just loved when they finally hit the sheets! Steamy erotic hotness!

damn-i-lost-my-horse-1

I think this might give my favorite book in this series (Cowgirl Up and Ride) a serious run for its money. I mean, Chase started out as this spoiled, self-absorbed man-whore who I wasn't all that thrilled with, and he turned into this sexy, vulnerable adorable, thoughtful hero who I just couldn't get enough of! I loved the changes and his character's growth. I thought Ava was wonderful too--in fact, both characters had loads of charisma, were fun and playful together, and each brought out the best in the other. I felt they had a really solid friendship, were great at communicating, so when they finally got physical, it was just so combustible! You could really feel the love with these two.

I actually cried a couple of times while reading this book (the gift Chase gave Ava), which just goes to show how much I was invested in it and the characters. I enjoyed all the background about the PBR (it was rather interesting) enjoyed meeting young bull-rider Ryan (although I knew what was bound to happen to him) and just generally liked the whole plot. My only complaint was...things ended rather abruptly, and this book was crying out for an epilogue! What happened? I frantically started turning the pages wondering where is it? Ugh. I could've read at least another 20 pages--too many things were left hanging. I just hope they were resolved in the next book (Cowboy Casanova) or I'm going to be one unhappy reader. For the lack of an epilogue, this 5 star read gets bumped down a notch to 4 1/2 stars. But what a great read--highly recommended!

If I could give MORE than FIVE stars I would!!! Move over Cord, you have to share your spot in my heart/fantasies with Chase =)

I was soo into the story and chemistry between Chase and Ava I could not put it down, I finished around 3:30 AM...Cowgirl Up And Ride has always be my favorite, but Chasin' Eight just shot right there next to it, maybe even a little ahead of it. One of the things I LOVE most about Chase is he has all the sexy McKay swagger, but there's something different about him, there are many depths to this Bad Boy McKay. I LOVED seeing how the relationship between Chase and Ava grew. There are a bunch of great tidbits about the other McKay's we love, just enough to satisfy my McKay addiction but not to detract from Ava and Chase's story. There's even a totally unexpected surprise in this book and NOPE....I'm not telling....

IMO Chasin' Eight could be a stand alone, even with the McKay tidbits in it. You could pick it up read it, get addicted and then start from the beginning, but of course I STRONGLY suggest to start at the beginning and get as addicted to the mouthwatering McKay's as I am. If you don't start at the beginning, then once you finish CE go back and start, you will be ready for a re-read of CE when you finish the first 10 books....

I don't want to take away from any of the other RR books because they are all fantastic, but Chasin Eight, is one of the most complete romance novels I have read, and I mean out of regular romance or erotic. CE has everything it takes to be on that NYT best seller list and I really, really hope it gets there!!! I REALLY hope people who don't normally read erotic, buy CE, because I think they will fall in love with Chase and Ava.

6/28 - I read an ARC in early June and wrote this review, I just finished re-reading CE and it is even better the 2nd time around =)

“Back off, perv! I have a black belt in taekwondo
and I will fuck you up if you take another step toward
me.”
Chase raised his hands in surrender, trying really,
really hard to keep his eyes on hers. “Whoa, there,
crouching tiger. Let’s just take this down a notch.”

wow...wow...and wow... I wished I could give more than 5 stars to this.

I have said this before in this series... but THIS is my FAVOURITE! out of all of them.. I Loved Chase! to the point where I want to call my first born Chase! ha ha
I also want to run away to the rodeo... ha ha
just be a buckle bunny for the night! -JOKES!

but seriously this book blew me away I smashed it in 5 hours I couldn't get enough of it. Ava is awesome! but them together are amazing... I want more of them.... When they laughed I laughed, when they cried I cried, when they blushed I blushed, when they were heartbroken I was too, when he fell off the bull I was whincing in pain.
This is so different from the other books but I loved it.. Seriously best book I've read all year.
The ending just kinda stopped to quickly for me but = ( but I still loved every minute of it...

Chasin’Eight...

First, let’s set the mood. The whole book this is the song that sat in my head. It’s the perfect song to go with this perfect book, so do yourself a favour and click the link, play the song in the background and listen to the words because it’s this book all over.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRhj5H...

Okay so now that’s settled. Let’s talk bookie. Lorelei James is a Master at cowboy kink. I’m pretty sure if she were to check her shoes she would see my drool on their cause this woman is the Master at anything and everything Erotic. And what makes her any different from Joe Blow next to her that writes the same thing? Ms. James does it with style, she does it with finesse. She adds in a real story, a real background, and real a sense of passion and love – oh and how could I forget – HARD.CORE.COWBOY.LOVIN’.

Chase McKay is up shit creek without a paddle ( excuse my French), after being caught in one too many promiscuous positions with one too many girls, he has been suspended from the Professional Bull Riding tour until he can get his act together keep his walla walla wing wong in his pants and learn how to ride a bull again. Chase decides to head home to, Sundance Wyoming to see if he can get his head screwed back on and work his life back out, starting off with one month of celibacy. But when Chase arrives at his little hideaway he realises quickly that he has a roomie, the very tempting, Ava Copper.

Ava Cooper is an up and coming actress and after a massive public break up with her boyfriend she has been stalked by paparazzi. Deciding it was time to get away and hide for a while, Ava heads to Wyoming where she knows no one will be able to find her. When Ava and Chase meet they have this instant connection and together they embark on a road trip of a life time across the state. Staying in cheap hotels, eating fried food, eating each other.....*Gulp*

I loved so many things about this book I don’t know where to start! I thought there were a lot of different things in this book compared to the past Rough Riders series. Our hero for one had a major insecurity. Unlike the other 12673430354.0 McKay men, Chase wasn’t 6’6, he was a little bundle of scrumminess and around the 5’10 mark. And with Ava being taller than him, on numerous times in the book it came up.

Also, the relationship was very slow building. The twosome became best friends before lovers. They were so sweet... but when things did finally heat up *fans self* - I was looking for hubby mighty fast, I tell you! It was off the rector scale in the scorching factor!

Both had to work hard to be together and had to both take a long hard look at their lives and their choices along the way. We were introduced to new characters, were dealt a whopping blow in the Bull Fighting arena and were left hanging for more.

Two things that I really loved about the book on a more personal level, one; Ava is my daughter’s name and I just think it’s beautiful. Second; I know firsthand what it’s like to have a hubby under the 6ft bench mark. Thankfully I’m shorter than him, but in saying that, he is the shortest man we both know and that can be demoralizing.

Chasin Eight, is easily a FIVE STAR book for me. Would recommend to anyone and everyone.

This was a good book spoiled by bad editing. The romance, when we got to it under the info dumps and grandstanding, was wonderful, but there was so much writing fat and reader management going on that I just never got to immerse myself in the story.

Actually, fuck it. Pretty much everyone else who's made it this far is willing to overlook Lorelei James' formulaic writing. Reviewing this won't impact anyone's buying decisions. Either she's your crack, or you stopped reading 8 books ago. If I write a real review and cross-post it on Amazon, it'll just get me set on fire by fangirls.

So I'll just do a rant for Goodreads, then.

Basically, it's every other book in this series. He's a man-ho, she's a sexually insecure woman needing to make a change in her life. They spend a few months living in close quarters. He declares that he calls the shots in the bedroom when the platonic relationship inevitably turns smexy. Lots of condoms get used. The heroine realizes her city life isn't "the real her" and tosses it away after two months of nookie to be with the hero. Do a find and replace on the rest of the books and put Chase and Ava in as the hero and heroine.

All this one missed was the omnipresent kid(s).

So, if you're on board with LJ's formula, you'll love this one as much as you did the others. I, however, couldn't seem to get past it this time. As much as I liked Ava and Chase, and I thought LJ did a great job with their friendship and romance, the whole story just sank under the weight of the writing. It was like watching a movie and seeing the safety strings during the stunts. Everything seemed like so much management.

For example, Ava's phone conversation with Ginger was less about two friends chatting than James taking an opportunity to let us know how many kids she and Kane have had since their book. Her chats with Gemma were to vomit Ava's backstory and to dump James' bull riding knowledge into our laps. Chase's diatribe on TV after his ride just felt like author grandstanding about helmets in bull riding. Pretty much everything anyone did felt like a transparent plot device. There was no magic in the book for me. I saw all the gears at work.

Maybe I'm worn out on the author. Who can say? Alls I know is that I couldn't immerse myself in the story. I was occasionally amused, but more often bored, annoyed and just plain disappointed at the wasted potential.

***3,5 STARS OF BULL-RIDING HOTNESS***

Lorelei James is my go-to author for cowboy romance. She introduced me to a whole new world of cowboys, ranchers and now, bull-riding sport. Where I live, there's none of them hence my fascination to her stories. She has created an unforgettable series with these McKay's huge family, brothers and cousins scattered everywhere I lost track on their relation to one another :p She even has McKay-West family tree in her website.

Anyway, this story is probably the least favorite so far. My problem was the relationship between Chase and Ava. They're hot together and I felt their chemistry, but they came from a totally different lifestyle and in my opinion, it needed a lot of efforts to make a relationship work. I think I expected to see more of their struggle, how they overcome their differences and all. The ending was a bit rushed for me.

I still love how the story was told, it's fun to read, funny banters between the characters, good plots, irresistible hero, family-drama, and most of all, there's no way you wouldn't love the McKays.

As always, expect the panty-melting actions here and there. They're plenty ;)

Decent story but I didn't like it as much as some earlier books, I didn't connect as well emotionally to the characters. I liked Ava, she was funny and didn't take herself too seriously. Chase was okay but I like the other McKays better. His brother Ben sounds up my alley :)

So a pleasant story (with no horrible story-ruining prologue like the last one) but not as good as books 3-9.

Oh yeah, the McKays are starting to look like the Duggars. I think Colby and Channing have 5 kids already. Holy crap.

Chasin' Eight by Lorelei James is the 11th book in her Rough Riders series. The Rough Riders series is one of my favorite western romances not only because sensual material is plentiful in the stories but because Ms. James creates characters whom with their faults and all you still manage to fall in love with at the end of the day.

Chasin' Eight tells the story of the wild bull ridin' Chase McKay. Like every single McKay that we have come across in the series, Chase too walks on the wild side too many a time until it all comes back to bite him where it hurts. Suddenly Chase finds himself on indefinite leave from the Professional Bull Rider's World until he manages to get his act together. With a plan on how to get his life back, Chase heads home to Sundance, Wyoming where he comes face to face with Ava Cooper.

Heiress to the Cooper fortune, Ava is a Hollywood star who experiences the vicious side of the paparazzi when the man she has been going out with for the past couple of months professes to be gay on a public press conference. Humiliated that she hadn't seen the signs sooner, Ava decides to take a break from Hollywood stardom and go lick her wounds in private where no one will recognize her. That leads her to Wyoming to crash in her friend Ginger's husband Kane McKay's trailer out in the middle of nowhere only to be roused from sleep by the most alluring specimen of man flesh she has ever seen.

Too bad that Chase has made a vow to stay off women for a month, otherwise he would have had the beautiful Ava beneath him before he drew his next breathe. But with sex out of the equation, Ava and Chase both strike a deal to try out being friends and keeping each other company in the journey Chase makes across the country to sharpen his riding skills. For the first time, Chase finds himself charmed by the company of a fully clothed woman though thoughts of getting down and dirty are never far from his or Ava's minds.

For two people who come from totally different backgrounds and lead so different lives, Ava and Chase finds in each other a kindred soul who understands the other and between them an explosive passion that wouldn't be bound by restrictions any longer. With red-hot passion comes strolling in feelings of the mushier kind, love that could last a lifetime if both Ava and Chase are willing to give it a shot.

Though Chasin' Eight did not make my favorites list, nevertheless it was a great read which I enjoyed immensely. What I loved most about Chase's story was how he slowly turned into someone better, climbing up from the rock bottom which he hits at the start of the story. The road trips that Ava and Chase makes across the country served to be where we get to learn more about both Ava and Chase, each of them growing up a little as the miles pass. Undeniably true to trademark Lorelei James style, scenes of passion are smokin' hot and I loved each and every one of them.

Though this one doesn't incorporate much of the rest of the McKay brood, this one certainly made me sit up and notice Ben, Chase's brother who has certainly been hiding some of his very interesting qualities which hopefully will be brought to light in the next installment of the series. Raunchy hot lovin' with emotional wrangling goodness is what you will find here and this one would definitely make a great summer read!

Recommended for fans of the Rough Rider series. And the good news for those who are new to the series, this one can be read as a standalone!

I did like this book quite a bit. It's not at the top of my McKay family faves, but it's not at the bottom either.

Chase and Ava are a fun couple when they're just relaxing and having fun together. Their chemistry is undeniable and they hit it off immediately. Unfortunately, all this perfect-togetherness makes the middle of the book a little boring. If they'd been chased by paparazzi or something. Some kind of tension going on, it wouldn't have bogged down.

But that was a minor quibble. I found it interesting that we stuck with Ava and Chase -- away from the rest of the McKays for the most part -- throughout the entire book. We had some cameos, but until the end there was no big McKay family gathering. And the one at the end is quite small.

I liked their inner monologues, mostly. Sometimes both leads were very immature, but they were both evolving quickly due to their individual "wake up calls".

There was some poignancy, which was good, but it led to some didactic dialogue that was unfortunate. I understood the reaction and the new obsession, but it wasn't laid out very organically, IMO.

There was also a new character introduced suddenly toward the end. That part of the story was handled ... not well. It could easily have been filtered through the entire book with a few highlights on the couple in question. Having a section from the new character's POV was jarring and told you pretty much from the first sentence what was going on. It could have been handled much more subtly and the POV switch from Chase and Ava (the only other POVs in the book at all) could have been peppered throughout so it wasn't such a "what the?" Otherwise, I'm interested to see where this "shameless sequel bait" (Ridley) leads. To sex and romance and sex, no doubt. ;-)

Make that a 4 3/4 star for me, LOL! I had to take 1/4 of a star away because of the ending. I really loved both Chase and Ava characters. I liked very much that they did not just jump into bed and got to know each other quite a bit first. The story kept me very interested throughout the whole book. The loves scenes were VERY hot and I could feel the feelings these two had for each other grow more and more as the story went on. There was some happy and sad moments both in this book, just what Lorelei is so good at making her readers feel.
Back to the ending and why I took a 1/4 star away, I felt the big secret was not pulled off all that well. It should have been more or not at all. Also the way it really ended could have also been a bit more. I'm hoping that maybe in the next book we might find out exactly what did happen next.

All and all I truly did LOVE this book and am already wanting the next.

I don't read a ton of cowboy romances because their version of alpha doesn't usually work for me. But this was good! Sexier than I was expecting, which is not a bad thing. Foreplay through abstinence is generally something that works for me, and this was no exception. I read this for Ripped Bodice Bingo, for the square heroine is taller than the hero, and I also liked how that particular bit was dealt with. I don't think I'll read the other billion books in this series, but it was a good reading experience.

Chase McKay has screwed up big time. He has been kicked out the PBR for being caught with his dick out one too many times. Because of the crappy scores he has been getting recently he decides he needs to get back to basics and decides to disguise himself and start practicing on the smaller rodeos. Then there is the one month vow of celibacy, and Chase and Tail Mackay go one month with sex?

The Ava Cooper, Hollywood actress and rich girl comes along, she wants to life real life for a while, after a bad and very public break up she wants to lay low and prove to herself that she is more then a spoiled brat, and helping Chase get his mojo seems just the way to do it!

We haven't seen much of Chase McKay in the other books other then to know that he is a famous bull rider and a ladies man. And damn he is as hot and sexy as all the other McKay men in this series! The man knows how to ride more then a bull! But apart from being a super hot cowboy with incredible stamina and muscles that just beg for a good tongue lashing, he is also...sweet! And possessive. And just damn perfect. We see him go from a bit of a selfish prick to a responsible man who learns to take care of more then just number one.

Ava was also great, probably one of my favourite ladies in the series, her and Chase are kinda similar in the way that they are both a little spoiled and selfish in the beginning of the book, but as they carry on their road trip together they start to realize they need to take charge and be responsible for their own actions.

What can I say about the smoking hotness of this book! Like all LJ books it had some hot sex in it! These McKay men KNOW how to please a woman! Because of this book I now have a brand new fantasy involving, chaps, a cowboy hat and a deep fried twinky! (I have never had or actually seen a RL Twinky so I don't actually know what they are like. But I want one!)

This book seemed a little more serious then the other books, something really horrible happens that actually brought tears to my eyes.

But I am now DESPARATE for a book about Ben, Chase's older brother, he is just so HOT! And I have a feeling that his book is going to be on my whips-and-chains-excite-me shelf and damn is that doesn't make me feel a little squirmy!

My Favourite Quotes:

"Just thinking about the treat I'm gonna offer you."
"Can you give me a hint?"
"It's long and hard filled with sweet white cream."
Ava sighed dreamily "Am I perverted fir admitting I can't wait to wrap my lips around it and taste it?"

~~~
And could she get a halleluiah that he had chest hair? Talk about manly, masculaine goodness.
(Yes she can! HALLELUIAH!)
So, yet another McKay cowboy romance by Lorelei James. This time we get Chase and Ava's story. I have to say I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Because honestly I was pretty disappointed (and some times even disgusted) by some of the previous books in this series. But for some reason I still continue to read them. This book actually changed how I feel about Lorelei James. I love a good romance, I appreciate a good erotic romance, but I hate when someone writes 200 pages of pure sex with no story line and calls it a romance, and I felt like that's what James was doing in the past. But Chasing Eight changed all of that.
Chase McKay is one of the biggest names in professional rodeo, being last year's bull riding national champion, but he hasn't been doing so hot this year. Add that to a scandal (Chase just can't seem to keep it in his pants) involving the spoiled daughter of one of the PBR's biggest corporate sponsors, and Chase finds himself suspended from the PBR indefinitely.
Ava Cooper is a sitcom star who recently found out (along with the rest of the television watching world) that her boyfriend of six months is actually gay. Her show has been canceled, her career is in limbo, her self-confidence is shot, and she is constantly being hounded by the paparazzi.
Chase and Ava are both looking for a hideaway where they can be totally alone, but after a bit of a comedy of errors they end up sharing a trailer in Wyoming. The sexual tension between the two is there from the very beginning. Too bad Chase has made a vow to stay celibate for at least a month.
In lieu of sex, Chase decides to try something he has never done before with a woman, friendship.
(I think this is what sets this book apart from the rest of the Rough Riders series. In the friendship stage of their relationship James actually allows Chase and Ava to get to know one another, which in turn allows the reader to become involved in the characters lives)
While Ava is okay with friendship, what she really wants is to have Chase in her bed. Together they travel incognito to small town rodeos where Chase gets his mojo back. Through it all, they meet lots of interesting characters. They discover things about themselves and each other and truly come to love one anther. Oh, they also have lots of steamy sex along the way.
When I finished the book, I shook my Kindle. There had to be more. I was enjoying the story too much for it to end.
This is a wonderful story about two people who fall in love. Duh, right? Well, I read a lot of romance and the characters are often two dimensional, stereotypes or just plain boring. Both Chase and Ava have real issues. They talk to each other and share their thoughts with each other. Niether character is boring. They both grow and change because the story drives the changes.
I laughed, I cried, I rejoiced with the characters. Lorelei James is a strong storyteller. She is able to bring not only the main story to life but insert background characters without messing up the flow.
Luckily, I recently visited the area where a large part of the story takes place, so I was able to picture the towns and the scenes on the open road. But what blew me away, was the discussion of the rodeo. There were bits about the sport, the business and the personal effects of the sport. Just amazing!
Yes, there is graphic sex. Yes, there is lots of sex. Interestingly enough, it all fits the story and doesn't feel contrived. In fact, a lot of the sex happens off the page.
I recommend this book for anyone that loves a really good romance!
One thing for damn sure, the sex scenes in all LJ's books were never boring and never ever lacking in creativity. And Ava and Chase's loving were pretty phenomenal!
That said, I just wanna express how much I enjoyed myself reading this book.
☑ Ava was a very wicked glamour girl with lots of dirty thoughts in her head.
☑ Chase was a bull rider bad boy trying to reform but had a very hard time doing that with Ava prancing around.
☑ The platonic relationship they had going was very sweet if somewhat delusional.
☑ The dialogues between those two were hilarious and awfully colorful.
5 stars, L O V V I T shelf.
Dammit! I went and did it again! I read this latest addition to Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series too fast. Way, way too fast. I wanted to make it last, but since it hasn’t happened so far, I have a feeling it will never happen whenever I read about those McKay boys.
I always mention the emotion that Ms. James writes in her books, it’s what draws me back each time to read her next, along with her charming and intriguing characters. Well, and the lovin’ too. :) While I’ve chuckled here and there over the time of reading this series, I don’t recall laughing out loud like I do with Chase and Ava. I thoroughly enjoyed this couple, from the moment they meet through their getting to know one another and then working through the changes they need to go through to come out on the other side of the new life they find for themselves, whole and intact.
Both Chase and Ava are going through their own scandals in their very different worlds. Chase is a bull rider. He’s been on the circuit for years and has gotten a tad complacent, he’s falling in the standings, not performing his best, and now has been suspended from his rodeo association after pissing off a main and very generous sponsor. Swearing off women, which has gotten him into more than enough trouble lately, and determined to get back to basics to figure out why his riding is off, Chase heads home, staying in his cousin Kane’s trailer, not wanting the rest of the family to know what he’s up to just yet.
Ava is an actress from Los Angeles and has had moderate success. Enough that she’s plenty recognizable by the masses. She’s been blindsided by the latest paparazzi report her boyfriend is gay, his picture with his new boyfriend plastered all over news rags throughout the country. She needs to get away from the City of Angels to regroup and figure out what she really wants to do now. So she contacts her friend Ginger, who recently married Kane McKay. And guess where she’ll be staying while visiting the newlyweds? I love that scene when Chase and Ava first meet in the McKay secret love nest.
Chase has been driving for hours, so he’s exhausted when he finally makes it to Kane’s. He’s so wiped out, all he does is wash the travel grime from his face and then he heads to bed. But sleep eludes him as he suddenly comes into contact with a soft and moving someone, who also reacts by jumping out of the bed quicker than lightning. Ava strikes a martial arts pose and threatens her intruder, and with the ensuing dialogue, which is hilarious, the fun with these two begins.
I especially love the truth or lie scenes. OMG, I laughed till I cried. And then I kept laughing. And while the later Twinkie scene is sexy as all get-out, I had a huge, huge grin on my face the entire time. I’m getting ahead of myself here, but this couple is just plain old fun and good times. And you ain’t read anything till you come to the mechanical bull. Oh. My. Heavens. Whew! Now let’s get back on track…
After they work their living arrangements out, Ava agrees to tag along with Chase when he starts his riding “lessons” with Cash Big Crow and Chase’s cousin Colby and then accompanies Chase for his objective of getting on as many bulls as possible from rodeo to rodeo until he finds out his fate concerning his current predicament. Ava begins to videotape Chase’s rides and before too long, his problem is pinpointed and their rodeo adventure begins. This journey throws a few eye-openers out to both Chase and Ava concerning their future and each other.
Doing her best to convince Chase to break his vow of no women for a month, Ava flirts and cajoles, all to no avail. After a few hot kisses Chase always backs off, leaving them both frustrated. Until Ava goes too far one night, bringing in another man to make Chase jealous. Our cowboy may be a mite sensitive when it comes to his non-McKay height of five-seven, but never piss him off. And he does get pissed off, just as Ava wants, and she finally gets more than she could ever imagine. And then some. Chase takes his brother’s advice about loving a woman, and if you think this cowboy was sexy before, he’s off the charts now.
Chase is like all those McKay men when makin’ love. Intense, playful, demanding, slow, fast and furious, and now generous. He thought he’s always been generous in bed, but Ava makes all the difference in the world. And once they get a true taste of one another, there’s no stopping them. They burn up the sheets any and every chance they get, which is a lot, I’m happy to tell you.
Of course, this journey can’t be all hearts and flowers and gettin’ nekkid. Tragedy strikes and Chase takes a blow that he more than likely would have sloughed off before, let alone allow it to affect him as it does now. It changes him, just as most of this introspective trek has changed him and how he looks at his life in and out of the rodeo. Ava also has her share of introspection and realizations as to how she’s lived and interacted with others, mostly because of the new project she’s working on through her photography and videography of their trip. Even as they come out on the other side of such tragic events, there’s more seeming betrayal close at hand, and our fun-loving couple end up on the skids with their hearts broken.
What I love about Chase and Ava is their lightheartedness, their banter and laughter as they get to know each other. Even then they talk to one another. They don’t let things fester and infect the relationship. This continues once they become intimate and even on through their sadness and later their anger. It goes without saying, of course, that the sex scenes are smokin’ hot and will leave you hot and bothered, due to the fact those scenes are vintage Lorelei James. No one does it better. ‘Cept maybe a McKay.
And Chapter 29! Oh my gosh, Chapter 29. Out-of-the-blue twist that had me gasping out loud. I cannot wait to see what happens next!
I have no idea how many more books are going to be in this series. I’m hoping a few more at least. I’ll never tire of these McKay boys.
“So you’re a leg man?”
“Sugar,” he said with a silky rasp, “I’m an everything man. Any woman I find attractive? Every single part of her is sexy to me.”
It always fun times to catch up with the McKay family, and this go around its Chase McKay’s turn. He’s found himself in some trouble with the PBR which leaves him suspended and in major need of riding help, to figure out how to get out of his slump. He heads back to Wyoming to work on his riding technique and keep a low profile for a change. No women, no distractions.
Enter Ava Cooper. She’s escaping her own personal scandal, one she didn’t cause but was dragged through the media spotlight regardless. She calls up her friend Ginger who offers her up a place to stay in Wyoming for a little bit of peace and a chance to figure out what she’s really doing with her life. She has a camera, a duffel bag full of clothes and heads out, far away from the Hollywood scene she needs a break from.
After a great first meeting (naked ninja poses occurred), Ava and Chase form a new friendship, Chase heading out on the road to compete on the PRCA tour under a fake name so he can keep working on his riding skills, Ava goes along to video his rides and try to figure out what her next move professionally will be. I loved so much that these two became such great friends. Chase, having sworn off sex for a month was dedicated to this and while he and Ava had sparks flying everywhere, he wanted something he never had before, a relationship with a woman outside the bedroom. Ava was not too fond of this idea. After being burned by her boyfriend, who really had his own boyfriend, she’s lost a little confidence in herself and wants to have a little fun with a nice guy. She wants Chase, he wants to make it a month and watching them go from strangers, to friends, to best friends to lovers was such a nice progression. There’s always the future hanging over both their heads, for Ava it’s waiting for the call saying she needs to get back to California immediately for an audition and for Chase it’s the PBR calling to say he’s been reinstated, but both of them start thinking that this temporary arrangement they started out on together, might be something more permanent that each of them is starting to really want.
He’d known the second he touched her he was done for. Ava needed him in a way no other woman ever had. He was a different man when he was with her, regardless if they were naked. So maybe that’s why he couldn’t freakin’ wait to get naked with her again, day after day after day.
On their rodeo road trip, they meet some new people including an up and coming rider, Ryan. A young eighteen year old just starting out, he and Chase get to know each other and Chase takes a real liking to the kid, seeing himself in Ryan when he was just beginning to ride and Chase helps him learn the ropes. It’s described throughout the book how dangerous a sport bull riding is (I’ve been to a few rodeos and holy hell the bulls are big, strong and powerful and injuries, minor to major, are part of deal for all riders.) The story took on a slightly darker tone that hasn’t really been present in past books. When the dangers of the sport hit close to Chase, it hits him hard and he needs Ava there with him to help him get through it.
It wouldn’t be a Lorelei James or Rough Riders book without some HOT SEXY time! Whew, ok where to start…we could pretty much start and end with the mechanical bull scene that certainly was memorable! Needless to say, once Chase and Ava get together, the chemistry is off the charts. Chase is a little bit possessive, a lot in charge and Ava loves every second of it!
They were a fun couple to follow along with on their journey from friends to lovers and when the reality of their careers comes to the forefront, they have a few bumps along the way. But their love is strong and the decisions they make in the end, no matter how hard or easy, are well worth it to find a way to be together.
What can I say about this gem of a book?
From the first page to the last sentence, the book had me hooked. I fell completly in love with both Ava and Chase! I was so wrapped up in their story that I found it hard to tear myself away!
OK, so what made me love this book so much?
The premise sounds, and not to be rude, very chick-flick rom-com. Two people from different backgrounds meet at a time where both are facing personal and professional issues. I'm not going to pretend that they don't get a HEA, but its the journey each of them take that makes it so satisfying.
Lorelei James has mixed things up slightly, by having Chase be the one that is trying to run from the obvious attraction to Ava. Its done in such a way that you know that Chase is fighting it, but in an effort to prove to himself and his family, he is determined to see through this self inflicted celibicy, no matter who much Ava tries to provoc him. (And Provoc him she does)
The road trip part could have been boring but again James manages to keep you engaged and makes each stop that bit different to the last. One particular stop is heartbreaking to read and sets our Hero slighlty off the rails. You can see why he is lashing out Ava, but it doesn't mean you don't feel for both Chase in dealing with this loss and with Ava for feeling so helpless.
The last part of the book switches things up once more and Ava takes Chase to her home turf. Now, I've read and seen this a billion times before. Most times the writer makes the out-of towner a bumbling idiot or the object of ridicule. James bucks this trend and shows that though Chase isn't from the city, he can not only survive but manage to adjust to the surroundings ($100 burger aside, which had me laughing.)
I admit to not reading all the books, nor in their intended order, but I wasn't lost. I did find myself looking over the back catalogue to see who had a book written about them so I could get their backstory.
On a final note, there is a rather cool and unforseen twist at the end, and I do hope that James explores this in further detail in a future book!
5 BIG BULL RIDIN' STARS!! Loved it!!! This one took a little longer to heat up, but it was worth the wait. The fact that Chase and Ava connected emotionally first, was a big plus. Then when they got to the physical relationship it had such a greater impact. The author took you on the journey with them and what a trip it was. As Chase and Ava revealed themselves to each other, your connection to them as a reader was more intense. I enjoyed their heartfelt conversations, flirtatious dialogue, a touch here, a kiss there, a soul searing gaze and then WHAM…AND IN CHAPS NO LESS. HOLY CRAP!!!
Not only do they learn about each other, they find out who they really are and that they have both neglected their families without even realizing it. Along the way they also suffer through a tragedy, which has a profound effect on Chase. We find out a little bit about how the extended McKay/West family is doing, and that continuing association is what makes this series so enjoyable.
My only complaint was that the ending felt quite abrupt and I think it could have been wrapped up a little better. The rest of the book was so good that it was still a 5 star read for me. This series has so much life left in it and I can’t wait to see who’s up next.
This book had it all! Romance, friendship, lust and love...plus some good bromance and sincere character development!
I loved Chase and his struggles along the road. He used sex as his coping mechanism and also used sex to avoid personal contact with fellow riders, friends and family. His dysfunction and frustrations made him complacent and his riding began to deteriorate....enter Ava.
Ava had made a few bad decisions in life...starting with getting fake breasts, dating a closeted gay guy and ending with running from her problems. Ava and Chase have so much in common...selfish, entitled and full of expectations...
But expectations are just resentments under construction...so these two embark on journey of self discovery, rejuvenation and growth...along the way the find friendship, a passion for life and true love!
This book could certainly stand alone and while James is oft known for her erotic ménage type lovin' this story was so much more emotional and loving! Super loved!
Enjoy!
I LOVED this book. One of Lorelei's best books in the series. I loved that she took the time for Chase and Ava to become friends and then lovers. I felt that I really got to know them and loved the book even more for that. I was not sure how I felt about Gavin, but I know Lorelei has a plan and I am sure I will love it in the end. Only this I wish for more in the this book was more McKay's. I loved that I got just Chase and Ava, but I did miss the kids and the many other McKay family memers. I hope readers will take a chance on this book and judge for themselves what a geat story Lorelei has written for readers. Way to go Lorelei. Keep the great stories coming.
Ack How yummy is the guy on this cover!? I just want to... run my hands over his smooth pecks. Thankfully the covers from this series are getting progressively less cheesy and porn like as we go
3.50 to 4.00 stars – Erotic Contemporary Romance
Chasin' Eight is the eleventh of the much coveted Rough Riders series and tells the story of Chase Mckay and Ava Cooper.
The book unwraps by showing Chase Mckay in a difficult spot where he is suspended indefinitely from the PBR tour to do some thinking and practicing over his love life and his career as a bull rider. It features him as a rodeo superstar, who is a notorious playboy, and spends his day only in his two favorite activities namely rodeo riding and skirt chasing. A once successful athlete, he always got all kinds of needed attention from the ladies and hence found it natural to go with the wind and have as many ladies as possible between his sheets. But now, his performance as an athlete has faltered and after having a very bad episode with his sponsor’s daughter he has found himself taking a reluctant break from the riding scene and work on his skill in riding a bull and avoiding women.
Ava on the other hand is a mediocre actress from Hollywood who also happens to be an heiress, finds her life in turmoil when her boyfriend creates a public scene which places both her career and her pride in trash. She rummages out her limited options in surviving this bitter incident and finds herself at Wyoming, sharing a trailer with one smoking-hot charming cowboy with delectable good looks. She feels an instant pang of attraction between them and finds herself lucky since her Hollywood get-away plan involved having lot of loose-end hot sex to build up her much tarnished feminine pride. However, disappointment hits her when she learns Chase’s resolve in avoiding women for at least a month!
Nevertheless, circumstances unites these two people from two very different worlds together, who not only had conflicting interests regarding their attitude towards each other, but also had different future ahead of them to take things in advance. Regardless, they managed to find few firm common grounds among themselves, which made them considering their conflicts and rationales towards each other and rethinking their resolve to stay just ‘friends’ and keep their hands off of each other. But, alas, some differences might be too large to get pass, threatening these two people from having a chance of their happily ever after.
Needless to say, the book contains explosive sex scenes written in creative yet predictable Lorelei James style. Chase proves to be another hot Mckay man who excels in his performance in the bedroom over and over again. We see a delicious glimpse of Chase’s elder dominant brother Ben, who BOUNDS (!) to make quite a good impression on the readers. I myself am eagerly waiting for his story!
However, what I didn’t like in this book was the too much redundant details for the bull riding scenes. As much as I found out that I love Mrs James’s writing styles with this book and henceforth with the series, I found out that too much information on bull riding sports is not my knack of favorite past times. May be it helped Mrs James to build up the story, but I felt it had nothing to do with the romance building for Chase and Ava. I felt that there was a lack of a good plot and the direction of events was pretty much predictable from the very first few pages which are unlike in other Lorelei James book. It took me a little bit longer to finish it since I didn’t feel to read it or know how things progress.
Overall it wasn’t the best one of the series for me, and was really a lengthy extended read. It didn’t sum up to my expectation much as it did in books like Cowgirl Up And Ride, Tied Up Tied Down, Branded As Trouble, All Jacked Up, which are the stars in this series for me.
I will blame it in my lack of interest in the detailed narratives of the bull riding scenes and issues which always might prove fascinating and trivial for other readers.
Will definitely wait for the next book called Cowboy Casanova which features the dominant Ben Mckay’s story.
