"Like an insecure prayer, or a counterfeit candle lit in The Church."
Shamanic poetess, Wendy E Slater, invokes a common purpose through which we might all set the tone for a future of harmony aboard this planet; her poetry is a constellation of spiritual musings from deep within her kaleidoscopic soul.
Slater is a force majeure hurtling towards the truth, championing Mother Nature's abundance while drawing upon Rumi's timeless principles of earth, air, water and fire. There is a raw honesty in her penmanship as she passionately rails against betrayal and false narratives, the Yin/Yang of Slater's optimism and cynicism jostling for position within the subtext of her script. Each line is spoken from the heart, each word plucked from the cosmos and then allowed to float on the breeze: aching, caring, provoking, hoping…
This author's stirring poetry takes me to a place that no novel can. Her humanity is venerable, her passion undeniable. It seems that Wendy E Slater's heart is reborn each time she puts pen to paper. And long may that continue!
Personal experiences tend to skew a person’s view of the world. The Perspective of the Constellation opens a doorway to a broader viewpoint that, once meditated upon, could perhaps bring more meaning to everyday life, restoring a sense of self and guiding individuals toward healing.
1709 What, What is the dark Soft fold of sadness? Not knowing what’s Finished and What’s begun —
Sun sets and rises As constellations Pasted into the deep Mystery are Lit by the source, Power, Unfolding light Stretched Between 2 palms, Pulled Towards the potential, The core of it All.
Ms. Slater’s previous works have consistently and engagingly explored a theme of Mother Earth and the four elements. This volume continues that narrative thread as it delves into the vastness of space and time, reminding us that, ultimately, we are made from star stuff…
The Perspective of the Constellation is a well-done collection I highly recommend!
Every time I read one of Wendy E. Slater’s books of poetry, it becomes a transcending experience and this book is no exception. Her poetry offers clarity by seeking truth and meaning, and for me as a reader, it achieves an inner peace and holistic healing of the mind, body and soul. This is achieved because her words are so powerful and authentic that they arrest the reader’s attention with their honesty but they also radiate hope and beauty with their delicacy, eloquence, and the poetic visual imagery they create. As confronting as the words can be, they also remind us of what is pure, real, and important in this confusing, and often, hostile world. By reminding us of our values and bringing us back to nature, we feel as though we have a compass that can steer us through the confusion and the restlessness from the outside world that managers to seep through us no matter how much we oppose it.
The Perspective of the Constellation explores themes of love, friendships, relationships, and peace, through beautiful metaphors relating to the cosmos and to nature. The cosmos and nature is our guiding light throughout and Slater weaves these elements so expertly to form the bigger picture. It also deals with the beauty and ugly side of humanity such as greed, and many narcissistic characteristics such as manipulation which is often hidden from view under the guise of love and friendship. It explores kindness, hope, and self-determination—going against the grain and opting to live according to our own values, as outside demands and unrealistic expectations can tarnish our growth in becoming well-adjusted, kind, yet assertive and content individuals. It also highlights working with the universe—not against it.
The author ensures that the reader is not held captive by the brutal ugliness of humanity and the world we live in for long and begins to rescue us just before we begin to think that hope is a remote notion; her evocative words bring us back to refuel and become one with nature—to seek guidance from the cosmos. Of course, there is always room for interpretation but that’s the beauty of such poetry—it evokes and invokes, inviting further insight and exploration. Wendy E. Slater’s ingenious and insightful words, and her knowledge and expertise on the spiritual and metaphysical, always speak to my heart. I could go on and on about how exceptional Wendy E. Slater's poetry is but I feel that it may be difficult to do justice to such highly esteemed work. Discovering poetry like this, that raises the bar so high, is like stumbling on a rare gem. Once again, this was an enchanting and thought-provoking, mystical reading experience.
Sometimes it's the juxtaposition of the poet's words or phrases that arrest me—make me pause, reflect, and re-read them. At other times it's the sheer lyricism of Wendy E. Slater’s expressed thoughts that cause me to cease reading to assess and absorb an image perfectly drawn. I become lost in a subconscious way, swooning, keeling over into a cauldron of thought so united with the poet's words, it's as if I wrote them myself. The prime example of this is the first nineteen lines of the poem: "To Rekindle."
To rekindle Is to touch the grace Of the wind Blowing through The fallen leaves— Dusting as it reveals Scattered starseeds: Emblems of the potential, Future’s holdings, Not as bio-engineered monocrops, But diversity amongst What was meant to be Before the eclipse And the shooting stars Falling into The alone and barren land With freighted galactic cargo Of despair, Separated from the Source.
I could quote the entire poem as proof of what I'm trying to convey, but then again, I could copy out every page of this collection. One way to describe the poet’s ubiquitous influence is like an ether net that surrounds the reader and instills a sense of peace. Slater’s masterful writing casts a benevolent and miraculous invisible thread that touches the crux of humankind.
The Perspectives of the Constellation is yet another brilliant addition to Wendy Slater’s Traduka Wisdom Poetry Series. As with the other collections I have read, the poet continues to amaze me as she packs so much food for thought and life lessons into so few, yet brilliantly chosen words. From stealing stars to the ego’s decomposition, truths are compacted with great power.
The sky, filled with mystery and wonder, from what we know we can see, what we think we can see, and what we can only imagine, makes for a magnificent theme and offers endless life metaphors. This collection covers so many aspects of the human condition, grief, healing, spiritual empowerment, and so much more. It is impossible not to recognize oneself. And, as it often is with poetry, what we may take from the poet’s words may be very different from what the poet meant. But the magic is that a good poet, like Wendy Slater, so easily gives these gifts to give each reader what the seek – what they require to begin what may be an arduous odyssey to healing one’s soul.
All of that said, writing a review of such superb poetry is not an easy thing for me. It’s such a personal journey in interpreting the words, but I truly loved this amazing collection.
In closing, there are so many lines that I loved … and had to read over and over.
“In the face of a twisted torrent, Tongues forked, Holding no truth, Only the viper’s Fanged greed Of deceit.”
“If the painted sky Was held tight Like the canvas Stretched Horizon to horizon Zenith to nadir What would the palette Render?”
“Visible tears In a small town On a rainy day, And no glasses to shield The sadness From the sight of others.”
“I am so done Filling in the blanks For others, Putting in punctuation, Comma, quotes, dashes, and The period.”
The Perspective of the Constellation is my second read by talented poet Wendy E. Slater. When I read such a beautiful collection of poetry, I feel it should have the lyrical voice of a poet to describe it, which unfortunately, I do not possess. I can only describe how it makes me feel. Ms. Slater’s poetry is eloquent, passionate, thought-provoking, introspective, and emotionally stirring. Her poetry digs deep into a wide variety of moving topics bringing clarity and understanding to subjects with a unique rawness, such as loneliness, love, deception, manipulation, greed, resilience, judgement, aggression, freedom, and karma.
I particularly loved 1714- If the Dance is in the Heart and these lines. “…To behold the ever-folding promise And knowing of love Neither Possessed nor holding But breathing as one wave into The next as it arcs with momentum Potential and exactitude Of knowing it all will Be as it will So willingly…” The poems about loneliness as in 1760 or giving up on relationships as in 1792 and 1793 are simple yet real, reflective, and poignant, as are so many others. I wrote down many poems to read again.
I truly enjoyed this reflective journey and hope to enjoy more of Ms. Slater’s poetry collections in the future. I highly recommend this beautiful collection of poetry.
‘The longest dark night Goes by halves and halves Never reaching the end…’ (WS) A few lines but, oh, so very powerful! Ms. Slater’s latest is a profound journey through life’s trials, tribulations, betrayal, life experience, love, and, very moving moments into our very existence! She has a unique and thought provoking style embedded in each and every line! It’s a collection that you will find yourself going back to time and again! A highly recommended read!
Wendy’s poetic prose is so well written ., it’s ethereal. Delicate , powerful and vibrant Vulnerability that makes you feel, think reflect
And PAUSE.. breathe
It’s a reference book for me personally. I find myself rereading . And with each reading I discover something new , or a gentle reminder of the power of emotions. And what I have control of. And the strength to be vulnerable in a positive and healing way
'The Perspective of the Constellation' – The parallax view?
It seems to me that within the title of Wendy E. Slater's new book of poems – 'The Perspective of the Constellation' – lies the key to how we should approach them. It seems to me that she is relating to 'the parallax view' – to the way we see things according to our position and perspective, just as the gathered stars of a particular constellation are seem differently from other positions in space and not related at all. In this way, Slater's words will bend their shape and their meaning to the reader's various dispositions, which is a wonderful way of writing. To have the ability to be central to all comers. And to quote her own words: "The trajectory carries the certainty to tell the story that North is North." Yet at the same time admitting that coordinates and compass are "all so out of date."
It is also true, that healing is a big part of her poetry and always has been, and that concept alone makes it vital that her healing words are received by the reader seeking spiritual guidance, whatever their state of entry or balance. Slater has a natural way with words that permits the meaning to enter, whatever its form. And she often goes out on a limb, to provide an answer that wasn't apparent at the beginning – even to herself – she is pioneering before your very eyes.
And once again we see her various poetic influences stoking the fire of her words – Anne Sexton – T. S. Eliot – and even, dare I guess, William Blake and Wallace Stevens? These are all favourites of mine, of course, so maybe I just see them for myself – from my own position in Slater's parallax field? But check out poem 1711.
I'll finish by saying how wonderful Wendy E. Slaters books are – all of them – and I will continue to read all her books over time – I am tempted to consider her my new poetry goddess.
“The Perspective of the Constellation” is so beautifully written that I doubted my ability to review its brilliance effectively. This work is mystical, meditative, and mesmerizing, as though revealed to the poet in a gentle cascade of stanzas flowing from one to another. The reader will find themselves on a quest to not only find the truth but to touch it, feel it, understand it, and ultimately accept it. One of my favorite poems is # 1708: “To rekindle is to touch the grace of the wind blowing through the fallen leaves—dusting as it reveals scattered Starseeds: emblems of the potential, future’s holdings. . . .” This collection of poems will awaken you and reset you on a new path to finding truth, grace, and peace.
The poetry in this brilliant collection draws the reader into introspective thinking and inspires meeting challenges for change. The author's raw emotion can be felt in each word, nearly demands our attention. Whether you want to reflect on ways to improve your life or discover what's most important to you or all humankind, you'll come out of the darkness and into the light, which serves as the conduit for reconnecting with hope, peace, and the wisdom in your heart.
It feels as though the writer is sitting right beside you, sharing words of wisdom that momentarily lift your daily burdens, leaving your spirit uplifted.
“Division into dawn Is perhaps The darkest hour, Just before the husking dusk Hush, no hint, Not even a treble, Faith in knowing it will Appear.”
Wendy has a talent for writing from her soul to your soul. Deep and Spiritual words are crafted into higher meanings, going above and beyond regular poetry.
Ms. Slater's latest poetry volume takes readers on a profound journey through life's intricacies, navigating difficulties, enduring betrayals, relishing life experiences, embracing love, and capturing genuinely touching moments that reverberate with our own existence. With a distinct and thought-provoking style that is intricately intertwined into each line, Slater creates a collection that entices readers to return to its pages again and again. This is more than a book; it's a highly recommended voyage into the heart of the human experience.
