Sweater Weather #2

The Fall Back Plan

Rate this book
The bad boy and the golden girl have traded places…

I’m back in Harvest Hollow after ten years to prove a point and to even a few scores. I’ve opened a new bar, and anyone expecting the old sweet and shy Jolie McGraw to be running it is in for a shock.

I’m not the only one who’s changed: when the sheriff comes to tell me I’m the prime suspect in the most ridiculous crime in town history, it’s none other than Lucas Cole, the former star of my teenage stress dreams, wearing the badge.

Seriously? The smack-talking punk I was forced to tutor in math is now one of the town’s most upstanding citizens? This isn’t what I had in mind for turning the tables on my former tormentors.

I blow him off…until I meet the niece he’s raising. I see so much of my younger self in her. But when I agree to help when she needs a woman in her life, Lucas uses it as a chance to build a case that he’s the man I need in mine.

That’s a hard no. No to love. No to Lucas.

But when Harvest Hollow’s nosiest forces combine to push us together, I’m not sure my heart stands a chance.

If you were the bullied kid who made something of themselves - you'll absolutely love this sweet little fall-feeling romance! SO stinking good. I think I highlighted over 20 different passages, and I never felt like I was bored!!

TROPES:
🍁 - Small-town romance
🍁 - Enemies to lovers (childhood enemies)
🍁 - Perfect for fall!!

NOTES:
- Super fast read
- Part of a series (I'll def be reading most of the series, if not all of it, at some point!)
- Smut: Definitely some tension, but overall closed door. More sweet than anything? I appreciate a nice forearm and helpful man candy moment ya know?

The vibes:
- moving from city back to small hometown
- bad boy from hs is now sheriff
- bar vibe
- mean girls from hs
- mystery subplot

My thoughts:
I had a hard time with this one for several reasons. There wasn’t a whole lot of fall vibes - which was something I was really looking forward to. A significant plot in this book is a mystery involving dolls being left at houses for little girls. I wasn’t super into this mystery plot happening nor into the resolution.
While this is a romance- I didn’t feel a lot of romance/chemistry between the main characters. I felt like there was so much potential with Lucas and Jolie with their backstories and with their current situation- but I still just couldn’t feel much with them, specifically with Jolie.

I’m not sure why I couldn’t connect with Jolie. She just felt very flat for me and I couldn’t get a good grasp on who she was or what she was feeling. The way she moved back home to almost stick it to her “haters” felt a little bit immature to me for her age. The highschool rival situation furthered my view on Jolie being immature. With that said- I did enjoy Jolie’s interest in Brooklyn, and I would have loved more on their bond and growing friendship/mentorship.

The Fall Back Plan was a cute small town romance. I loved the single dad (well, uncle) sheriff and back-in-town high school nemesis/new business owner. It took a weird turn with the doll’s mystery, but that ended up okay. The audiobook was a bit challenging, but that’s mainly because there was no differentiating when we were in Lucas’s head as opposed to Josephine. When Lucas spoke it was obviously male, but his inner dialogue was just like the female’s and it threw me off.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I was going to rate this book. I struggled a bit with Jolie’s high school grudges. It just seems a little weird to me to hold onto things so tightly that happened a decade + ago.

But then the growth started happening. And I started to see a 3D character! And while I sympathized with her childhood, I could start to root for her as a person.
Her growth as a character was probably the best I’ve seen done in a while!

I really enjoyed Lucas’ character! His growth too! And his consistency & confidence. He felt like Jolie’s home, even before she knew it. They were good for each other!

They both felt like real characters, who where tossed around by life but made choices to live and not just survive.

I loved all the side characters that Melanie crafted in this book and would love to see them all get their own stories!

The little “mystery” aspect woven through was a fun way to keep the story progressing!

And Lucas’ multiple outfit change scene…*swoon*

Really, it was well done! And I enjoyed it so much.

Good romance hobbled by bad stereotypes

There's no question that Melanie Jacobson can write good, complex characters as well as engaging romances. Her heroes & heroines tend to be of a similar type, but her stories vary enough that it isn't readily noticeable.

The Fall Back Plan fits right in with that norm. The romantic tension & resolution are a little close to insta but still well done. Unfortunately, there were several aspects of the story that kept pushing me out of it. The mystery used for the plot device seems too weak & unlikely to credibly do its part, so it just felt too contrived.

The other issue is that the author has a penchant for some seriously clichéd, bigoted stereotypes. The wealthy families are white, privileged bigots as always. There IS a sweet twist in the bonus scene, but with no details, it was hard to buy & just didn't come across as psychologically consistent.

As the child of an alcoholic dad who also suffered for it economically, I didn't get sneered at & bullied by the well-to-do kids but by the ones who were in my own neighborhood. And I caught FAR more bullying for being one of the smart students than anything else. Thanks be to God for the advanced student programs that removed me from their hateful, destructive proximity.

Meanwhile, the worst I ever experienced from the well-to-do kids was a girl who noticed a hole in the bottom of my shoe, & matter of factly not pityingly, offered to give me some of her shoes that she wasn't using anymore. God bless her, I didn't resent her attempt at kindness, but there was no avoiding the fact that it was embarrassing.

And while I LOVED that Lucas recognized that there are more good cops than bad cops, & credited the good ones as a positive influence on his life, there was still some of the same old PC bigotry against men. A male villain in the story who does HUMAN things suffers from "toxic masculinity" - which, ironically, the author shortly thereafter has the female villain perform an equivalent version of - without blaming it on her gender.

The protagonist worked in a "testosterone-driven office" where she had to establish boundaries & not let the evil men push her around & take advantage of her - as if those are things exclusive to men, lol. If we're going to stereotype, I'd work a "testosterone-driven" environment over an "estrogen-driven" one any day of the week & twice on Sunday. The men I worked with in management for more than 2 decades were ambitious, but so were the women - & the gals were far more likely to be vicious backstabbers that we'd all try to avoid.

People do good & bad things as INDIVIDUALS with free will NOT as demographics.

I did have to laugh near the end of the book. After arguing with the author some time ago about the part in her book _Here for It_ when Anneke gets all righteously offended by the guy she's supposedly in love with trying to tell her she's special with those unforgivably "misogynistic" words, "You're not like other girls", in this book the author has Jolie tell Lucas, "You are one of a kind". Why is it not misandristic for a woman to say it to a man?

While the political nonsense isn't present in an overwhelming amount, like a burr under a saddle, it doesn't take much, either. I read to escape the lunatic fringe not to travel bonus miles with it.

Regrettably, after taking a break hoping her writing would return to her previous more toned down level (where you could tell it was there but at least it wasn't in your face), it seems I'll be joining those of my fellow readers who have permanently debarked.

I absolutely loved this book! Melanie Jacobson really knocked it out of the park in this second book in the Sweater Weather Series. I fell in love with this heartwarming, slow burn, sweet romance between a hunky, single dad sheriff & his sworn enemy. And can I just say how much I loved all the book references and that Harvest Hollow’s library played such a pivotal role in Jolie, our prickly, sworn off love heroine’s life?

Both Jolie & Lucas had challenging childhoods including poverty. Lucas struggled in school & Jolie was there to tutor him. Despite his challenges, after high school, he turned his life around and became the town’s sheriff.

With only a drunk father to care for her, Jolie often went hungry & was bullied by the wealthier girls. She excelled in school though & received a college scholarship where she majored in finance & became wildly successful.

Bent on revenge, Jolie returns to Harvest Hollow to purchase & remodel the bar that ruined her life. She’s back to prove a point, but also wants to make a difference & hopefully prevent others from experiencing what she did as a child. When she meets Lucas again, her walls immediately go up. But, when she sees how much he’s changed & how he cares for his niece, she can’t help falling for the handsome sheriff. She also wants to help 10 year old Brooklyn who reminds her of herself.

When the same mean girl who bullied her in school accuses her of a strange crime, it’s up to Jo & Lucas to solve the mystery and clear her name before it ruins her business. Though she’s sworn off dating, the more time she spends with Lucas, the harder it is not to give love a 2nd chance.

I loved seeing Jolie grow throughout the story. She really finds herself in Harvest Hollow. I loved Lucas & “Jo’s” romance. Lucas is so patient & sweet. I loved how he changed outfits depending on the role he was playing. He really listens to Jolie and built their relationship on friendship. I also loved how Jo was so aware of Brooklyn’s needs and didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize their relationship.

🍁 Other things I loved:
Trivia night
Little House on the Prairie/Scooby Doo references
Creepy doll mystery
Spin the bottle/7 minutes in heaven
The librarian/library
Found family
Traffic stops
Harvest Hollow Library Scholarship

Another amazing book in the Sweater Weather series! There’s humor, romance, mystery & so many heartfelt moments. You’ll definitely want to add this to your TBR list. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are completely my own and voluntarily provided.

This fall, I am making my way through the Sweater Weather series—a multi author collaboration of standalone novels set in the same small town. This is book 2!

Going into this book, I had the expectation of a light-hearted, fun story with all the cozy, fall vibes. To me, this was not it.

The first half of the book actually seemed fairly heavy and then the mystery that came up was a little weird/creepy. I guess there’s your spooky October vibes?

I didn’t feel like Lucas and Jolie had any chemistry and Jolie’s excuses for not wanting to date him were very weak and didn’t quite match up.

Overall I just did not connect with any of the characters or the story and found myself struggling to get through it. From looking at the reviews, however, it seems like I may be in the minority, so maybe don’t take my word for it.

Having enjoyed Just Don’t Fall, book one in this series, I was excited to move onto this one and see what it was like. However, I was left underwhelmed and disappointed for several reasons.

I liked the sound of this book before going into it. Single dad, enemies to lovers. It sounded right up my street and the perfect cozy romance to sink my teeth into, considering it also had a mystery subplot, but it just fell pancake flat.
This was absolutely not an enemies to lovers so I don’t know why we’re being told it is. It was, to put it simply, a grown man and a grown woman woman who both went to school together like a decade ago, and she was just holding a grudge for him not being nice to her in school. He has been apologetic and liked her since page one. So there’s that.
Single dad trope? I’ve realised it’s not for me. I really don’t like children in books. That sounds bad lol. But I just don’t.

The mystery element of this book was the most boring and uneventful plot I’ve ever experienced in a romance. I just did not care for it and who was behind it, and even when we did find out, it was just underwhelming and I quite frankly couldn’t wait for it to end.
Honestly the synopsis sounds fun, cute and intriguing, but I just think this was executed poorly.

The writing was extremely simplistic and almost boring to follow it felt like it was written by a toddler.
It was easy to follow, granted, but it was just written poorly and I struggled to hold my attention.

The romance was… not good.
I did not swoon for Lucas. He held none of the attributes I like in a man and he just didn’t do it for me. He came across boring and had nothing going for him. Sure, he had a blue badge, but he just, no.
Jolie. Jolie. Jolie. Insufferable. Why are you holding a grudge against people for so long? Genuinely grow up. Why did you RANDOMLY SUDDENLY decide you were being a silly billy about Lucas? (Rhetorical question)
One minute it was “No, Lucas. I don’t want to date you.” And basically ‘Ew get away’ to “Omg, Lucas wanna go on a date? You can hug me now and by the way I wore a cute top.” Which was the cringiest thing she ever said. I hurled in my mouth.
The romance. They didn’t kiss until 85% in. This is the slowest of slow burns. There was no sexual tension AT ALL because Jolie kept pushing this man away and this poor man just was like “Oh okay, sure.”

I’m giving this 2 stars purely because the first 20% was okay. And I was interested enough. But after this I just changed my tune. The writing, romance, characters. It was all a no.

The Fall Back Plan is a delightful and heartfelt romance. I loved Jolie and Lucas; their journey from enemies to lovers hit all the right notes, as they forgave each other first, keeping their hearts safe until they could open them fully. I loved the small town setting with its quirky characters, an endless stream of gossip, and a strong sense of community. I love the idea of a love story set in fall, a season that I love! This sweet, charming romance will touch the hearts of many readers!

The Fall Back Plan is the second book in the Sweater Weather sweet romance series. (all are stand-alone books by different authors)

Welcome to Harvest Hollow where you can expect small town romance, a sheriff who gets a second chance and a new bar owner who's back in town to make a new name for herself.

This is a story of second chances, forgiveness and about how two people finally dig up the unfinished past so that it can finally be buried for good. My favorite part of this book was the mature communication addressing the damages and hurt done in the past. I loved that I could feel the maturity that comes from over a decade of growth and space apart. I also loved the themes of exploring what poverty look like in different homes, and how small towns play into those relationships.

This also includes a guardianship situation that really was super sweet. It showed the softer more vulnerable sides to both of our main characters and provides a sweet family theme to the overall plot. If you can have any two characters bond over fantasy books...be still my ice cold heart!

This is a fun fall romance that you can read while sipping hot coco and eating pumpking muffins. Its fun and flirty and provides all the light hearted feels for falling in love.

THE FALL BACK PLAN
● Lucas (31) & Jolie
● sheriff / bar owner
● Jolie opened a new bar
● single dad to his 10 year old niece
● Jolie has been away for a lot of year and his returned to open a bar
● mystery- dolls being left at little girls' houses (the dolls look like the girl)
● small town
● enemies to lover

Since listening to this book, I found the narration to be occasionally confusing, particularly in the portrayal of the male character. With two points of view presented, distinguishing between them became a challenge, especially when delving into the male character's perspective. When the narrator adopted the male character's voice directly, it was easier to discern whose viewpoint we were experiencing. However, during internal monologues of the male character, the lack of distinct vocal cues made it difficult to identify whose perspective was being presented. I often found myself relying on contextual clues to clarify the narrative viewpoint.

The Fall Back Plan
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Author: Melanie Jacobson

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Melanie Jacobson and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

Synopsis: I’m back in Harvest Hollow after ten years to prove a point and to even a few scores.

My Thoughts: This is book no. two in the Sweater Weather series. I am enjoying this series thus far. Jolie McGraw left Harvest Hollow years ago to “make something of herself.” After working in the financial market for several years and then suffering a heartbreaking breakup, she moves back and buys the bar, and runs into her teenage nemesis. Jolie had to tutor Lucas Cole and he was uncooperative and rude towards her. Now Lucas is the sheriff and one of the town’s most upstanding citizens. Jolie meets Lucas’s niece and knows she needs to be there for her and Lucas uses this as an opportunity to get closer to Jolie, to break through the tough wall she has built to protect her heart. This follows the tropes of enemies to lovers, small town, town meddling, and single dad.

The story is narrated in a dual narration by Jolie and Lucas, in their respective perspectives. Jolie is tough, has built a wall around her heart, and is only interested in revenge of her former tormentors; however, if you can get through the wall, she has a soft center. Lucas has turned his life around and focused on helping his niece, whose father is in prison; he is independent and focused, while carrying compassion for others. The characters were developed well with depth, witty banter, chemistry, and intriguing. The supporting characters were amazing. The author’s writing style was complex, clean, humorous, fun, swoon-perfect, creative, and brilliant, especially for adding in the mystery subplot. I loved the slow burn romance that develops between Jolie and Lucas, it is sweet, endearing, and just heartwarming.

I love everything about this series. The second book, by a different author is just as good as the first one. These are feel good closed door romance novels, it always lightens my mood after reading a few chapters. I recommend this whole series, a new book being published every Thursday until all 7 are published. I would love to have seen more between Jolie and Brooklyn develop. However, still a wonderful book that I throughly enjoyed. I would highly recommend.

I have been excited about the Sweater Weather series since I first heard about it. When The Fall Back Plan by Melanie Jacobson was released on Thursday, I immediately downloaded it and started reading it. I have no regrets 😂! The books are loosely tied together by their cozy fall romcom vibe and take place in the same town, Harvest Hollow.

Jolie is back in the town she grew up in. She doesn't have fond memories and holds a grudge against several people. Of course, the first person she encounters is Lucas, the Sheriff, and she can't reconcile how he is now an upstanding citizen. I liked Jolie, and I loved her character growth. While she seems like all hard edges, her softer side appears when she meets Brooklyn.

Lucas is attracted to Jolie from their first encounter and doesn't understand the walls she has built despite the obvious chemistry between them. He apologizes for the way he treated her in high school, which shows how much he has changed since high school. Lucas is exactly what Jolie needs and he is a perfect gentleman. He is patient with her, giving her the space she needs.

This is a very slow-burn romance novel. I loved it. Here is what you can expect to find:

enemies to more
single dad
witty banter
sizzling kisses (when they finally get there 😂)
swoon-worthy hero
strong heroine
overcoming poverty
fabulous story
trivia night
library/librarian plays a strong role in the story
strange doll mystery
found family

There was so much to love about this story, and I gobbled it up. While the stories stand alone, I LOVE what the authors have done with the series. Can't Help Falling by Courtney Walsh releases on Thursday, and I am here for it.

Side note: Readers of my blog know I prefer clean reads. While this is a closed-door romance, there is some mild profanity.

This is the second book in the Sweater Weather series and it was just sooo much fun!! At only 226 pages it was also a quick read which I enjoyed too!

I loved that it’s a reverse grumpy/sunshine where Jolie has returned to her hometown of Harvest Hollow to run a newly renovated bar and just gives two f*cks about the rest of the town who treated her so badly as a kid.

Enter hard to resist single 'Dad' (Uncle) and former bad boy turned town Sheriff, Lucas and things really get interesting. Throw in a creepy 'Doll bandit' mystery and a fun trivia night grand gesture and this was a pure delight to read from start to finish.

Pick this one up if you’re looking for a feel good, kissing only Fall romance with great small town vibes and enjoy these tropes:

✨Enemies to lovers
✨Single Dad figure
✨Hot sheriff
✨All grown up
✨Chosen family
✨Bully turned nice guy
✨Sworn off love

This can definitely be read as a standalone but a few characters from the other books pop up as they are all set in the fictional town of Harvest Hollow.

Many thanks to the author for an early ARC copy. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book and all opinions are my own!

I received an ARC from netgalley in exchange of an honest review. I wanna thank the author and netgalley for this copy:

I loved this. It's definitely a 4.5 stars book. This is so sweet and light, exactly what I needed. Lucas was such a good man, he admited his mistakes, was there for her when she needed him, respected her space, didn't force himself when she said she just wanted to be friends instead was just her friend, was genuinely a good person. He saw the way his life was taking when he was young and decided to be more than that, they both did, they both wanted more out of the life than the hand they were dealt with. Jolie, like him, had been through a lot in her life and she didn't ket anyone step on her or make her feel bad for whatever reason, she stood up for herself no matter what. She was so strong and at the same time so afraid of love but she understood at the end that Lucas was more than worth it. I loved them as a couple, they fit together like puzzle pieces

I received a free copy for review.

This is the second book in a multi-author series which has nods to each other and some overlapping characters, but completely stands on its own as well.

This is the story of two people with negative past history and baggage finding peace and love. It reminded me of a Katherine Center novel in the way it was both a love story and the story of a woman’s journey of self discovery (which is funny because there is actually a mention of the main character reading a Katherine Center book ☺️). Some romance readers may not be as satisfied because there is less straight up romance, but it totally worked for me and I hope it will for many others.

I really appreciated the representation of growing up in poverty and unstable family situations and then finding ways to help others in similar situations. I loved the role the library played as a sanctuary. Those scenes hit me in the feels and encompassed so much of what I appreciate about libraries and their essential role in society. It was so satisfying to watch the prickly main character work through her anger and resentment to find belonging.

A satisfying, engaging, and sweet story to welcome in the fall season.

Trigger/content warnings: alcoholic parent (past) and discussion of alcoholism throughout. Steam level is kissing.

ARC REVIEW🍁

Published date: 7 September 2023

The Fall Back Plan by Melanie Jacobson is a small town romance, old friends/strangers. Jolie used to tutor Lucas. She leaves town because of problems.
Several years later, she comes back to town for a certain goal and she meets the town sheriff... And the story starts.

This book was absolutely everything. It had everything I wanted. It's a cute romance but at the same time highlights really important problems that teenagers face when their parents are troubled. The author style of writing is so smooth while presenting those problems without it being cringe. And it shows that people can change if they put their mind to it. The poverty scenes and the alcoholism that were shown, tells you that it's not the child's fault.
This book is definitely a 5⭐ I really enjoyed it and I have no complain about it. I recommend it to everyone!!!

Thank you NetGalley for sending me this book🤎

Jolie put Harvest Hollow in her review mirror as quickly as possible. She had the brains and the scholarship to escape her roots and took advantage of both. Ten years goes by and a bad breakup later has her reevaluating. She decides to take Harvest Hollow by storm and payback all the jerks from her past by flaunting her success in their faces. Meanwhile, Lucas has turned a new leaf. He's now the sheriff and his delinquent past is long forgotten. By everyone except for Jolie.
Jolie and Lucas equally have baggage that allows for them to understand and support the other. Brooklyn and Mr. John allowed both MC's to show a softer side. This was an easy book to binge on a lazy Sunday.
Thank you to the author for the gifted copy. All thoughts are my own.

Why it wasn’t a five star:
What I struggled with mostly is Jolie's personification. I cannot stand when a grumpy woman is labeled "prickly". Maybe because I'm not Suzy Sunshine myself, but a reserved or guarded man would never be labeled that way. It would be something sexy like brooding or disagreeable. I also wish Melanie had either leaned more into a spooky vibe or adjusted the mystery to something a little more tame. Either way would have been more my style but the conclusion was satisfying.

Lucas and Jolie are the perfect fall recipe of swoon and fun.

"The bad boy and the golden girl have traded places..." and that only served up the most delicious, contentious connection. The sweet and swoony sheriff, Lucas, is a single parent to his niece and has changed his rebellious ways and now that Jolie, the studious valedictorian, is back in town as the new bar owner, the sparks are crackling and smoldering. I loved the hilarious and somewhat awkward interactions these two had, as they try to merge their pasts and futures. Oh, how I laughed and cringed.

"Harvest Hollow is the kind of place where your past is always present."

These two sworn enemies have more in common than they think, especially as they find themselves in the middle of a town mystery. Melanie Jacobson has created something special with a tough as nails woman with something to prove and a kind and fair man who only wants the best. I couldn't get enough of the whole cast of characters and the community feeling, and I'm ready to pack my bags and move right into this series. Jacobson brought the good and bad to life, smacking this story right into my heart.

I'm now craving sweaters, apples, and love. This is the perfect autumn read!

Content: mild romance; past parental neglect/alcoholism

Harvest Hollow here we come! The Fall Back Plan sets up the fictional town of Harvest Hollow, NC really well. I loved walking the streets with Jolie and especially visiting their adorable library. All the fall vibes made me want to put on a cozy sweater and some boots and eat an apple turnover.

This book has incredible character depth and growth. Melanie Jacobson has an amazing way of helping you understand characters in such a heart-warming way. You root for them and come to decipher why they are the way they are and why they do what they do. They feel real and gritty and tangible and you just want to give them a hug! In this book, right when you know Jolie needs it the most, the sweetest, hottest, most humble sheriff steps in and and gives her that hug! And boy, does it just feel good!

I promise you will fall in love with Lucas. He is just good to his core! He falls first and he falls hard! It is absolutely adorable to see him work to win Jolie over.

I also really enjoyed Jolie’s snark combined with her kind and giving heart. I loved the arc of their relationship and how they continued to peel back the layers of each other’s personalities and began to see them more clearly and in a different light.

I adored every moment with Lucas’s niece, Brooklyn. The care and help Lucas and Jolie both give her is so sweet! There is so much more than the slow-burn romance going on with this story. The plot brings up heavy topics in a tasteful way that will allow you to see a new perspective and have empathy while still feeling light and fun overall. Melanie is SO GOOD at this and I can’t get enough of her books!

And the grand gestures at the end? AMAZING! I loved it from start to finish!

This is the second book in the Sweater Weather multi-author series. Each can be read as a stand-alone or in any order, but they all take place in the same town and include nods to other books in the series. Read all of them to enjoy the BEST FALL EVER!!

Thank you to the author for the gifted copy.

This was adorable! I really enjoyed the town and its realistic problems. Dysfunctional childhoods, mean girls and social media nightmares. All stuff Ive experienced. I identified with Jolie and how she grew up (except for the great job she had in Illinois).
This was a slow burn romance that was kinda enemies to lovers. Enemies being to strong a word. But I enjoyed watching them fall. And the kisses! **Sigh** The story was a clean romantic atmosphere and I loved the ending. The game nights were a blast. I recommend it.

Just like the first one, this was pretty freaking cute with a mini doll craze. I would like to try all the drinks that Ry made.
