Yuichiro survives the trial to acquire Cursed Gear—demon-possessed weaponry that is humanity’s only hope for combating the vampire scourge. But times are dangerous, and instead of getting to celebrate his newfound power, Yuichiro and his friends are given their first mission: head to Shinjuku and investigate vampire activity. Unbeknownst to Yuichiro, Mika, his best friend and now a vampire, is headed for the same place.
Was quite some time since I began reading this manga. I first saw the anime back in 2017 and started the manga late 2017-early 2018 in my wait for season 3 (which I need like air can they pls just announce when we'll have it). Stopped reading for some reason. But I've been missing this world so much and it's been so long so now I'm reading it again.
Since I picked up where I last ended (didn't feel like re-reading the two first volumes since I still remember the plot pretty well from them) it was a head-dive into vampire battles. It feels both good to be back and also I regret everything because there will be intense feels. Why is all the manga and anime (or anything at all) I invest my heart in intense on my feels???? (read: Attack on titan and Noragami). Answer: I'm a fucking masochist and self-torture is one of my favourite hobbies that's why.
Yuichiro finally gets his first taste at action on his first mission with his teammates while seeing a different side of one of them, while an unpleasant surprise might be heading his way. A- (91%/Excellent)
This was really good! Yu's showing slow but steady character growth, Mitsuba wasn't too terribly annoying for being a loud-mouth bossy pants, and there was really good actions scenes. It does bother me that Yu keeps stealing the spotlight, I'd love to see more of the other group members' weapons in action.
I still can't stand the vampires and stand by my opinions on them as villains. Seriously, aside from Mika, are we ever going to meet a vampire that isn't condescending or obnoxiously full of themselves? All of the vampires presented so far have practically the same personality traits which is incredibly annoying. Honestly, if they didn't have such different characters designs, I'd barely be able to tell them apart. I'm going to be really annoyed if Ferid doesn't end dying at any point or if it takes too long to kill him off. I really don't think I can handle this series if I have to put up with him through most of it.
Complaints aside, I'm enjoying this series, good shounen fun.
Wooo finally they're out fighting and we got a new character Mitsuba Sangu and she seems cool though i think they're making her a tsudere which like ehh not crazy for them but i like her interactions with Shinoa Hiragi alot so more of that pls
This is the 3rd volume in the Seraph of the End series. There was actually quite a bit of action in this volume but I found it strangely slow. This was my least favorite volume in the SotE series so far and I am struggling to pinpoint why exactly. Maybe it was because there was less story progress and more battles?
Yuichiro and crew journey to their first vampire execution only to find that the city of Shinjuku is under attack. Little does Yu know that his best friend from childhood, Mika, is fighting on the vampires’ side.
The illustration is very well done and I enjoyed seeing Yu and crew go on their first vampire execution. There are some interesting new characters added and it was intriguing to see the world beyond the city where Yu underwent training.
I do absolutely love that there is a story thus far” summary at the beginning and that all the characters and their histories/stories are also listed. This is so helpful to the reader and I really appreciate it being included.
Overall I enjoyed this volume of SotE but not as much as previous volumes. I do look forward to seeing what happens next and plan on continuing the series.
A lot more action in this volume, which was nicely portrayed through the art. It’s finally starting to pick up, although I wish the characters were a bit older, or at least acted more mature since at the moment they’re annoyingly winey and constantly fighting. Hopefully the tone of the manga will get more serious later on~
Yu has his demon and his cursed gear now, and is somewhat better at "teamwork". But, he still flies off the handle and acts alone whenever someone is in danger, not worrying much about putting his team in danger.
I am curious about how it will go when Yu and Mika (who is now a main player for the vampires) battle.
So the volume starts of with Asuramaru (Yu’s sword demon???) appearing in his dreams and threatening to take over his body as usual, as well as offering to see his revenge through for him. Yu reveals that ever since he’s gotten his sword, he’s been having the same dream everyday. I guess Asuramaru won’t give him a break, HA. We all know why it wouldn’t be a good thing for a demon to take over Yu’s body, but I’m grateful for the short screen time Asuramaru gets because he’s definitely a force to reckon with, and ever the more entertaining. Putting that aside, now Yu is officially part of the vampire extermination unit, more commonly known as the Moon Demon Company.
Shinoa, as usual, remains annoying. She keeps making fun of Yu for being a virgin even though I’m almost certain she’s a virgin herself, and she jumps at any chance to make fun of him. Just like the beginning of the volume, where Yu thinks (I think he does but it doesn’t specify) that Shinoa looks good in her uniform but doesn’t say so, and she ridicules him for it. It almost made me glad he refrained from giving her the compliment. Actually, it did. Also, the way she mentions her sister’s death as if it wasn’t a big deal was very annoying, and she even ridicules Yu for apologizing about her sister’s death. Then why mention it in the first place? But so, I’m not as fond of Shinoa as I should be, and that’s a little concerning considering she’s the female protagonist in some way or another. And she’s the cover of this volume. How ironic.
I’d love to stop talking about Shinoa, so let’s talk about Mitsuba. She’s a newly introduced character, who I also know from the anime. I don’t remember disliking her when I watched it, and surely enough, she’s more tolerable than Shinoa. Why? Because anyone that hates Shinoa has a brain, and since she hates Shinoa I feel like we have something in common. I loved her even more when she called Shinoa a sarcastic airhead. No one could have said it better! Shinoa does reveal later that Mitsu has a painful past. I don’t think she has a right to say that but whatever. It turns out that Mitsu was the reason one of her former squad members died protecting her. Because she broke the formation of the squad and endangered everyone. It’s why she kept getting mad at Yu for falling into the vampire trap and endangering the whole squad, which I will elaborate on later. Yu ends up saving her life on one of the missions, and it seems like she’ll fall in love with him. That’s a pain because I don’t ship it, but the point is: Mitsu is not entirely lovable, but I’ll take just about anyone out over Shinoa.
Kimizuki sure did earn some points when he called both of them a pain, though. He’s the one with the most brains clearly! He was also able to start up a messed up car. I mean, I don’t know about you but I love me a man who’s handy. Among everyone, he’s also the only one who knows how to drive. I’m starting to think there’s nothing he can’t do. It was absolutely adorable when he got embarrassed at Yu’s praise of him. So cute! Yoichi doesn’t get a lot of screen time sadly. Maybe he’ll appear more in the next volume.
Yu is a moron for falling into the vampire’s trap, but at the same time I don’t think I should be insulting him for it because he knew it was a trap in the first place. Rather, it’s admirable that he still wanted to save someone even if it endangered his own life. I guess he learned from the experience with Mika and the other children of the orphanage.
Seems like a full-blown war has broken out though! And Mika is participating on the side of the vampires it seems, along with Ferid, king of assholes. Ferid wonders if Mika is still mad about the “little incident” from so many years ago. Mika tells Ferid that he isn’t angry at him for killing his family, but at himself for not being able to protect them. Ferid proceeds to make fun of Mika’s care for Yu, being his only remaining family member from the orphanage. We also learn that Mika is a starved vampire, and to this day has refused to drink human blood. To fend of his thirst, he drinks Krul’s blood, but it’s obvious that that is not enough. And since he hasn’t drank human blood yet, he can’t be fully considered a vampire, seeing as his eyes haven’t turned red. But it continues to be funny how Yu wants to kill all vampires, not knowing that Mika is a vampire himself. He keeps referring to them as “bloodsuckers”, and I have to admit I don’t like the word much. I wish he would just call them vampires, but I guess calling them in that way sounds more offensive to him. Mika also continues to looks for Yu… I suspect the next volume is when they finally meet. I mean I think it is since I watched the anime some time ago. I remember it was pretty dramatic… but I’m never one to spoil. Wait, would that be considered a spoiler? Sorry if it is!
Really enjoyed this volume as usual. I keep giving stuff five stars lately because it’s manga and I always enjoy manga. Only because I don’t read manga I know I wouldn’t like. But, Seraph of the End is a pretty good story to me, and I would probably read it as a novel as well. I’ll stop writing here because my hand is tired, but I can’t wait to get my hands on the next volume.
