The Taking #2

The Replaced

Rate this book
Romantic and action-packed, The Replaced is the gripping second installment in the Taking trilogy.

Kyra hasn't been the same since she returned from her mysterious five-year disappearance. Now, on the run from the NSA, Kyra is forced to hide out with others who, like her, have been Returned. Yet she is determined to find Tyler, the boy she loves who was also abducted—all because of her. When her group intercepts a message that Tyler might still be alive but is in the hands of a shadowy government organization that experiments on the Returned, Kyra knows it's a risk to go after him. What if it's a trap? And worse, what if the returned Tyler isn't the same boy she lost?

Perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and the Body Finder series, The Replaced is both chilling and explosive, with creepy, otherworldly elements and twisty, psychological thrills that will have you questioning what exactly it means to be human.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to HarperCollins and Edelweiss.)

“Replaced.
The word made me feel not real.”

This was an interesting sequel, and I liked the twists!

I felt sorry for Kyra during this book, it was obvious how much she loved and missed Tyler, and having to deal with all the sci-fi stuff that was going on wasn’t easy for her either.

“Because here’s the thing: if I could dream, it would be of him.
Tyler.”

The pace in this book was quite slow, and there seemed to be quite a lot of travelling and information gathering during this story, which did make the story drag a bit. Thankfully the action and excitement towards the end made up for this, as well as the cool little twists we kept getting thrown.

“It happened sometimes, she’d told me, to the Returned. Our eye colors were…enhanced. The same, but brighter. Bolder.
Unnatural.”

There was a little bit of romance, but most of this was based on Kyra missing Tyler, rather than anything else. We did get a steamy kiss taking place though.

“Everyone knew the first rule of fake kissing: no tongue.”

The ending to this had several really interesting twists, which totally rescued the book for me. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next book.

As someone who really enjoyed the first book in The Taking trilogy, I was definitely surprised by the take that Kimberly Derting took on the second installment of the trilogy! I'll have to be honest, I was a bit skeptical with the new relationship to create a love triangle. Actually I'll be more honest. I hated the new love triangle. Towards the end of the book I began to accept it more. I appreciated the introduction of new characters and the preparation for a war to be fought instead of sticking to the small world of Kyra and Tyler and them figuring out what has happened to them after Kyra's return. It was refreshing and I was thoroughly entertained for the most part. But, there wasn't a lot of information and introducing for a lot of the new characters, which made it harder for me to believe the plot twists that were intertwined with the plot build up. Overall I was entertained and enjoyed the expansion of the story. I'm definitely looking toward to the third and final book!

My rating system: (I do use half stars.)
5 - I do not use the 5 star. Not because a book might not be worthy, but because a book is never perfect.
4 - I loved it! There weren't too many flaws, and I had no trouble getting through it. (A 4 star rating is the highest rating I've ever given a book.)
3 - I enjoyed the book, but there we're flaws that made me enjoy it less.
2 - I finished the book, but there were too many flaws for me to enjoy it.
1 - I could not finish the book, and I probably did not finish it....

An Electronic Advanced Reader Copy was provided by the publisher via Edelweiss for review. Quotes have been pulled from an ARC and may be subject to change.

I gobbled this one up right away because the ending from The Taking was so crazy and left on a cliffhanger. I was sad that this eventually suffered from second book syndrome AT FIRST, but then it changed on a dime and you're bombarded with a ton of action and a plot that just keeps moving it will make you dizzy.

Kyra just keeps trying to find out more about what happened when she was taken and the mystery that surrounds her abduction. Her powers grow stronger and stronger and one example would be the bowling scene where she wasn't thinking and ended up doing something that shouldn't have happened.I was also very surprised that she didn't worry a lot about her father since in the first book, that's pretty much all that happened. I love the chemistry between her and Simon. It's one of those instances where people will either love it or hate it, and I'm happy to say I'm on the loving it side. The kissing scenes were pretty hot and nonetheless I wanted more development between the characters. Boy did I get it!

The second half just kept going with all the crazy revelations being made and twists and turns and Ahh! Also that ending pretty much gutted me because it's one twist that I didn't see coming. I love The Replaced, and this one was still a solid read to the trilogy. If you like your science fiction novels with a whole lot of mystery grab this one, I know it will be an enjoyable read. Now we just have to wait for the final book..

"You knew we were different, you just didn't realize how different."

"I don't need you to take care of me, and I didn't say I was afraid."

"Maybe comforting was better than fireworks anyway. Comforting fit like a sweater, and kept you warm, and made you feel protected."

"No one could take my past, my history, the narration of my life away from me."

I was super in love with The Taking, so of course my head nearly exploded when I saw this on EW.

I'll be completely and totally honest. I struggled with this book. There are two huge plot points that I absolutely hated.

Don't get me wrong, it was good. We got some answers and there were some really great revelations. However, it definitely had the feel of a second book. The ending is a bit cliffhangery, but the set up for book 3 is very interesting.

**Huge thanks to Harper Teen and Edelweiss for providing the arc in exchange for an honest review**

Quick & Dirty: Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this novel as much as I did the previous one. I couldn’t connect with the main character and resented the extra love interest who was added in.

Opening Sentence: Dead.

The Review:

Spoilers for the first book! In The Taking, Kira realized that aliens abducted her and took five years from her. She’s not the only one who’s been stolen away, but she is the only one who has been gone longer than a couple days. When Tyler was infected by the fatal disease in her blood, she took the last chance she had to save him, and tried to give him to the aliens in the hopes they could heal him. It worked, and he, too, was taken. But it’s been weeks without sign of him and Kira is crazy with worry. Not only that, but she’s beginning to realize what makes her different from the rest of the returned. She has a mysterious power that she finds hard to control and her old nemesis seems resistant to all her attempts to assuage him. To find Tyler, Kira will do whatever it takes. But when she finds him, will he be the same?

I read The Taking last year. I had been intrigued by the original plotline and awesome main character, Kira, and loved the romance with Tyler. When I got the opportunity to review The Replaced, I scooped it up, excited to continue the story. In the first, it was a nice entry into the series, but there was a lot of information left out. Why are the aliens taking humans? What do they plan to do with the returned? I was excited to answer a couple of those questions in the sequel. Although there was a couple questions answered, there were more that developed, and I’m not sure how everything could be answered in a third book. In the end, it was an okay read, but I think I enjoyed The Taking more: I’m not sure what it was, but I didn’t find The Replaced as gripping as The Taking was, or engaging.

Kira is still a badass heroine, but I didn’t care for her as much this book. In book one, I felt connected to her plight. The book moved at a steady pace and her emotions were easy to sink into. This novel, I found that the pace was less stable and more action packed, and that Kira was harder for me to connect with for whatever reason. One thing I did like about her in the story was her powers. She was watching them develop and doing her best to control them but was having difficulties. Through all of that she remained determined to figure them out in order to be safe around her friends and loved ones. I think my lack of connection to Kira was a major reason that this book fell a little flat for me, especially when I expected so much after the killer first novel.

In The Taking, I loved her love interest, Tyler. He was sweet, friendly, and he was a good listener. He would do anything for Kira. Their relationship developed adorably and I totally approved. Unfortunately, in this novel, something of a love triangle springs up which annoyed to me no end. I didn’t even like the guy who was the second option, Simon. It was basically “since Tyler isn’t around I guess you’re a good second choice!” I mean, come on. Tyler never would have given up on Kira were it him in her shoes and he deserved that kind of loyalty from her. At least wait a year or two before moving on, not months. This really messed up how I looked at Kira, and I lost respect for her the instant she began to feel something for him.

For all my complaining, there were things I enjoyed about this book. You finally realize what happened to Kira up there and the difference between her and the other returned. There are a couple other questions answered, and a nifty cliffhanger sets up a next book nicely. There were some good action scenes and a couple big revelations, though they were somewhat predictable. Nevertheless, I felt let down by this novel. The writing felt simpler in a way and the whole book was more rushed. I get that the story has to speed up book two, but I wish that I could have followed along better. One thing that I will say is that the cover to The Replaced is as gorgeous as The Taking‘s was and you should try it out if you liked the first book, if only for the cover. Maybe your feelings will be different!

Notable Scene:

Where were the fireflies when you needed them?

“Get off at the next exit!” Jeff announced franticly from the front seat. He snapped the laptop shut and was waving wildly toward the right side of the jam-packed highway. “Get over! Start signaling now. We need to get off as soon as possible!”

This couldn’t be good. “Why? What is it?”

“It’s us,” Jett answered, twisting in his seat so her could face us all. “They’ve got roadblocks up ahead and they’re looking for us.”

FTC Advisory: HarperTeen provided me with a copy of The Replaced. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

2 stars.

I remember liking the first one. A lot. Because of the sweet romance and interesting premise. But this one fell pretty flat for me. Was it because of the lack of that sweet romantic interest? Maybe. (Although I do think it's good to get some distance from romance every once in a while to get perspective.) But more so, I found myself irked by Kyra and her childish narrative and actions and especially her forced romance with Simon. I hate it when we're introduced to a love interest in the first book and then, because he's gone in the second book, the protagonist goes on a rebound. What on earth. It makes me so angry. That may have been one of my biggest problems with the book . . . Kyra, the romance, and .

The world-building isn't great. The character are all right, though many of them rub me the wrong way and none of them are overly developed. The writing seems juvenile at best.

Overall, not the best second book, but because I've managed to get this far, I'll finish the trilogy.

Last year I read The Taking. In my review I mentioned the romance and how I hoped the author would fix it. Well, she 'fixed it' by continuing the love triangle where the MC's ex would try to get back with her all while his brother and the current love interest of our heroine is missing. Lame, bro!

Can't say anything important happened in this book since the whole time Kyra was trying to find Tyler. People were chasing them, she kissed her ex, the same old, same old.

I really really liked The Replaced last year. It was fun and different and I liked that exhilarating feel of 'what the hell is going on???' that the book had. I was really looking forward to the second book in the series, especially after that killer cliffhanger (and I don't think many books end in cliffhangers). Unfortunately, the downside of waiting so long for a book is that I sometimes tend to forget what happened in the first book by the time the second book is released. This was the case with The Replaced, it took me a good while, to remember what had happened in the first book while I was reading.

I felt like this book dragged on in a lot of places. At the end of the book, it kind of felt like we were pretty much at the same place as we were when The Taking finished. I felt like other than a few things, there weren't a lot of resolutions that happened although we did get a lot of revelations. I was annoyed by how little of Tyler there was this time around, since I loved him in the first book. And I'm not too happy about the direction their relationship took in this book, it kind of felt like they went backwards. You know that feeling you have when you just feel a love triangle coming on? Yeah, well I had that feeling in book one and I tried my best to ignore it. But the love triangle effect rears it's ugly head and I wasn't too happy about it. It felt like a very formula plot for YA trilogies. I find myself having zero patience with love triangles lately, so this might not bother others as much as it did to me. Still, even with these things I had problems with. I still liked the book, it wasn't as good as the first book was, but it gave me enough to want me to continue with the series. As far as plot, there are a lot of things I can't mention because of spoilers, but I'm glad we finally got some answers. Even if the story wasn't quite where I was hoping it would be by the end of this book.

Audiobook Comments: I have a love-hate relationship with Tavia Gilbert. She's really good, I'll give her that. I just don't think she's the right fit for YA books. She's very talented and knows how to to change her voice to create different characters and match it with the scene. My problem is that she tends to overreact sometimes, which can get pretty annoying. She also does this thing where she pants a lot between words and it drives me nuts. I've really liked her in some books, mostly adult paranormal, but she really bothers me in other books. But, she is a favorite among most audiobook lovers so this could be a thing that only bothers me and other readers might not even notice it.

"Perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and The Body Finder series, this gripping second installment in The Taking trilogy explores what makes us human....."

So I was first introduced to Kimberly Derting when I picked up her YA trilogy, The Body Finder. I literally flew through that series and became utterly obsessed with Kimberly's writing....When I heard she was coming out with another series..I just could not wait to get my hands on it...and I was not disappointed!! I really loved the first book in this series, The Taking.

The Taking is all about a young girl who re-emerges after being "taken" or kidnapped for over 5 years. It is all about her trying to figure out what happened to her and why. The Replaced is the second installment in this phenomenal young adult sci-fi series and had me turning pages long into the night....

The Replaced opens up with Kyra on the run from the government. She is hiding from the NSA and also searching for other survivors that are being called the "Returned." Kyra finally meets up with the other teenagers who have been taken and returned and she begins to realize that even though they are alike because they were all taken....Kyra is special and different from the rest...Kyra discovers she has powers that make her stand out among the rest.

In The Taking, Kyra falls in love with Tyler, her next door neighbor. Kyra & Tyler went through alot together in the first book and by the end...Tyler was poisoned by touching Kyra's blood and Kyra had no choice but to take him and offer him to the aliens in hopes they would cure him and save his life. In The Replaced, Kyra is searching for Tyler and hoping he is not gone forever. Kyra and her group intercept a message that Tyler may be alive but is being held captive by an underground government organization.

...and now enter the love triangle featuring ....Simon. I did have a little bit of trouble with the love triangle involving Simon....only because I loved Tyler and Kyra together. I loved how he stood by here even after finding out she was taken by aliens....

The Replaced is a fast-paced adrenaline ride for anyone who enjoys science fiction with a little bit of romance....There are lots of questions answered in this amazing sequel to The Taking...but there are also alot more questions that arise.....

Who can Kyra trust? Who is truly her friend for the right reasons?
Why? Why? Why?

When I read The Taking my review mentioned the silly exhausting details, how they were absurdly long, and how annoying it was all that prose about her toughs and convoluted feelings about everything around her, even in the most unusual settings. All that put me off. I hoped the author would fix it in future books.

Well, she hasn't... I tried. For the life of me I just couldn't take it any longer, more of the same. More ridiculous things going through her mind, more feelings of this and that, but especially strange reactions to things that no one would react that way. The story just isn't that enticing so, to put it shortly, I'm sorry to say but that's it for me. I'm throwing in the towel and it's the end of the series for me.

The Replaced is book two of The Taking series by Kimberly Derting and I have been waiting to get my hands on this book since I finished book one. The book picks up shortly after The Taking ended and if you haven’t read that one yet, you might want to hold off on reading this review. Not because I am going to spoil anything with this book (or at least try not to) but because I don’t want to give anything away on the first book.

Ok, so this book picks up shortly after book one ends. Kyra has been at the Silent Creek camp in Oregon where the other Returned are and she has been relying on Simon and some of the others to help her find her dad and Tyler. When a message comes through that an unidentified male has been found and is being held at a facility for inspection, Kyra jumps at the opportunity to see if it really is Tyler.

While at the camp, Kyra has become friends with a few of the people there and they are the same people that are headed out to the facility with her. Natty, Willow, Simon, Thom, and Jett all make the trip and as they get to the location, things don’t go exactly as planned. They also end up face to face with Agent Truman and after their escape, Kyra finds out how many secrets the group has been keeping from her. The biggest one being around the replacement DNA she has in her and the fact that Agent Truman is specifically hunting her.

Now that the group is on the run again, they decide that they will need to head to Blackwater Ranch, which is where Thom and Simon met. As the group gets there, Kyra finds out there is more to the story than Thom and Simon led her to believe and she finds out that the leader of the camp, Griffin, has a history with them. She also finds out that Griffin’s story is a bit different from the rest of the group as she has a connection to the scientists working for the government.

Kyra also finds out that the one person she has been looking for, Tyler, has been at the camp but things aren’t the same as when he left since he can’t remember how their relationship changed when Kyra came back. It was definitely difficult for Kyra to adapt to being just friends with Tyler but at the same time, she was clearly starting to have feelings for Simon…which I wasn’t happy about.

A lot definitely happens in this book and I only covered a very small portion of the actual things going on. There is a lot of action and a whole bunch of secrets are revealed to Kyra and this book ends with a bang. I loved how Derting tied everything together and explained what is really going on with the differences Kyra has within her (compared to the other returned). If you liked The Taking, definitely read this one when you can. You will get some answers but like me, you will also have more questions when you hit the last page. I can’t wait to see what happens with these characters and will be waiting anxiously for the next book.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy!

2.5 good (enough)
I wanted to read the replaced because I remember really enjoying the first one. even though I really don't have a whole lot of memory about it besides I liked the romance all the complication of her disappearing and then coming back as well as the whole alien angle.

It got right back into the mix of the story with her at a camp for the returned people who have been taken by aliens and then brought back to Earth. she's with some guys I guess you met last time and she really believe that they had gotten into the aliens security system somehow and she got a message from her dad but the guys with her didn't believe her and it really frustrated her that what she saw from them was pity. Their mission brought the action level up a notch, and it was slowly integrated into the story the details from the first, and I remembered things or just was able to follow along as the story progresses.

There were a few twists in the story, and I was reeling from a few of the things revealed. Some of the people from Kyra's past and how they work into the story. I wasn't sure how I felt about that as well as the semi forming other attraction.

But honestly, I think that The Replaced had a few "big" reveals that just didn't shock me and couldn't figure out why it did Kyra and company. And it fell into a bit of the formulaic second book syndrome-- oh look, we have a main character who has to go into hiding with some of the people that she met at end of first book, not sure who we can trust, go on several road trips following half leads, face off with the nemesis, escape, rescue mission, oh look, here we are in the car again. Then a reveal and the ending.

While I didn't hate this and did want to get through to the ending hoping for Tyler's appearance, I just wasn't enamored. Not sure if I will continue with the series because of one of the twists.

Bottom Line: Some surprises but mostly the paranormal second book syndrome in play.

If I had to pick one of the heroine's superpowers other than healing which would be the obvious choice, I'd choose holding my breath for a long time. The drama is ratcheted up a notch with the kids on the run. New characters really add to the story. Jumping right into book three!

When you love a first book so much, it is really hard not being excited about the sequel and even harder to not have high expectations for said sequel. Which is why I went into The Replaced with such hope that I would love it every bit as much as I did the first.

And while I did struggle a bit in the beginning with a slow start, I did end up loving this. Maybe not quite as much as the first book but overall I was once again thrown right into Kyra's crazy mixed up life of being on the run, worrying about those she left behind, info about the aliens themselves, and trying to get more information about what being a Returned means.

Throw in a bunch of conspiracy, a love triangle (I know, I know, it didn't need to be there but some how it did add to the story), and more perplexing info on the Returned and you got one heck of a plot line, one that left me with more questions than answers and itching to get my hands on book three.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out and it was a worthy sequel to the first.

*This review will contain spoilers for The Taking (book one in this series)!*

Synopsis (via Goodreads): Kyra hasn't been the same since she returned from her mysterious five-year disappearance. Eighty-four minutes. That's how long it had taken us to cause an explosion, break into a secret NSA lab... and lose one of our own.
The first chapters of The Replaced are a whirlwind. An amazing whirlwind.

Actually...

The entire book is a whirlwind! Can I just say... I was very much anticipating this follow-up and Kimberly Derting did not disappoint!

Backtracking, for those of you who are foggy on book one, let me refresh you. This goes without saying, but just in case: SPOILERS FOR BOOK ONE AHEAD!!

Alright, in a nutshell? Kyra was abducted. She reappeared five years later with no memory of what happened. As expected, Kyra is quite shocked—as are her friends and family. Her boyfriend and best friend are together. Her parents are divorced; mother remarried, father insane. Kyra falls in love with the boy next door. She and him have a wondrous romance complete with sappy bits of dialogue and cutesy acts of adoration. Kyra finds out she is changing; but also not changing. Not aging. Healing rapidly. Moving things with her mind. She also has toxic blood. Blood which Tyler, the new love, comes into contact with. The only way to save Tyler is by letting him be abducted. This is all found out through a group of Returned just like Kyra. In the end, Tyler is abducted and Kyra is left reeling from this coupled with the disappearance of her father.

Jump to The Replaced. This book takes place within just days/a couple weeks of the first one. Tyler is gone and Kyra has received a shady message from someone that may just be her missing dad, saying that the NSA has Tyler. This is bad-news-bears due to the fact that the NSA wants to experiment and/or kill people like Kyra and the other Returned. They swoop in, things are not what they seem, etc. etc.

What I loved about the beginning of this book is that the author did not waste any time. She charged head-first into the good stuff. She just dropped me right in the middle of a hellstorm. This not only includes a kickass opening chapter, but a steady pace from cover to cover. Never a dull moment. Something always gripping; always holding you captivated. Not just words on a page, but a series of events that you can feel and almost touch.

The action is palpable, and so is the romance. When Kyra and Tyler are finally reunited, things are shaken up even more by a crazy twist. Tyler doesn't remember the events leading up to him being taken. He doesn't remember Kyra coming back after the five year disappearance OR them falling in love. This throws Kyra into a haze of emotional discord and confusion. To tell, or not to tell? Is the time right? Will it ever be right? Will he remember on his own? Derting also throws the curve ball of Simon having a thing for Kyra. Love triangle? NO NO NO. This was my only complaint about The Returned. I feel like the love triangle with Simon really dulled the bond we were supposed to see between Kyra and Tyler. I feel like this was a mistake... but things were left slightly in the air, so maybe there is a reason for this that I cannot yet grasp, because Kimberly Derting clearly likes to shake things up.

A huge part of the plot is focused on Kyra's group of Returned constantly running from agent Truman and the rest of the NSA group tailing their every move. Every time these guys turn around, there the NSA is, breathing down their necks and trying to kidnap Kyra above everyone else. The story follows the group from place to place, and this creates fantastic new elements within the story. Not only that of bonds between current characters, but brand new characters altogether. I was very impressed with the new additions as well as the plot twists they brought with them. Get ready to pick up that jaw when it falls to the floor!

Lastly, along with the action and romance comes knowledge. We learn some answers to the who and the why questions we were left with at the end of The Taking. The aliens and the government and what they were up to. Who was involved and why. Why Kyra is different from the other Returned...
“My dad liked to talk.
When I was one of his subjects...
...both sides wanted all along was to create a replicate...
Not a hybrid, but...
It was what they referred to as Replacement.”
Overall, The Replaced was a hit! A complete hit. The romance was a little off-kilter, but still fantastic in an overall sense. The action and pace were ON POINT. The use of plot twists was exceptional and perfectly timed throughout the book. The characters developed very well and I also enjoyed the new ones I got to meet. Derting wrapped this one up with yet another cliffhanger to keep you waiting with bated breath. I am stoked for the final book in this trilogy so I can see where this roller coaster ends! If you were at all a fan of The Taking, I highly highly HIGHLY recommend reading this second book. If you haven't read either? What are you waiting for?! I promise you will not be disappointed. It has a little of everything and is age-appropriate for the YA genre. I hope you'll check it out!

It feels like stretching to give this book 2.5 stars. The first book was far more interesting and it pains me to say that. This book was boring. Reveals happen and secrets come out, but nothing that is going to blow you away. This felt like a middle book... a filler. And it read less like a sci-fi and more like a contemp. Kyra was so much more concerned with keeping her feelings true to Tyler (that romance is still weird to me...) and she wanted to "be the first in his heart". What is this, a HS drama? GROW UP. You are fighting for your LIFE. How about you focus on that? After this book, I'm not sure I want to finish the series.

I know I wrote a somewhat positive review for the first book, The Taking, but after reading this book I am half tempted to take all of the good words back. This book was not good. That is harsh, I realize that but I cannot and will not lie to you. This was the textbook definition of a filler book. It is simply the book to get the reader from the start of the series to the end.

The Replaced begins just days after The Taking ends. Kyra is with a group of other kids that has been taken and returned. They are all trying to find Tyler who was taken at the end of the first book. They are all doing their best to stay off of the radar so the NSA or whatever secret government agency is trying to find them… especially Kyra. After the group intercepts a secret message that says Tyler might be alive, they all decide to go after him. That leads them to a training camp for returned teens. It seems like a safe enough place but Kyra cannot stop her driving need to find Tyler. Will she and her friends be able to find Tyler? Will they all be able to stay out of the NSA’s reach?

I am not sure I can say it enough in my review: this book was boring. This entire story felt pointless. Again, I know that is harsh but I felt it simply did not add anything to the overall series. So many pages and chapters went by and nothing substantial took place. The author made a huge deal of the kids stealing vehicles and taking less traveled roads. At one point the author spent a chapter talking about how everyone interacted in the vehicle during a long part of the drive. Who cares. It did not add anything to the story. What it did do was cause me to zone out and my brain went elsewhere.

The thing I disliked the most about this story was the uncomfortable interactions between Kyra and Simon. EW. Simon wanted more from Kyra and at times she let it happen. But right after it happened, she immediately felt remorse and told him it couldn’t happen again, then in the next breath she was kissing him again. She kept claiming that she was trying to stay true to Tyler. Listen Kyra, if you are fighting for your survival, who cares about defending your honor with the younger brother of your ex-boyfriend? Why are you sending mixed signals to Simon? Either do or do not. Why did Tyler have to be Kyra’s main focus? How about she learn to defend herself and survive? The unnecessary drama just did not make sense and it drove me nuts. This was supposed to be a sci-fi thriller, not a stupid HS drama contemp. “No, I must stay true to Tyler, whom I love.” And how can you be so in love with someone after only knowing them for a few days?! GAHHH!

I have mentioned it a time or three, this book bored me to tears. I will say that when Tyler did come back it wasn’t until 2/3 of the way into the story. Then the plot twist that was thrown did nothing more than make me roll my eyes. It was not original or shocking, it felt predictable. This story had every feel of a second/filler book. It did set up for the third book but I will not be reading it. I do not care enough about what is going on to finish. Kyra is not a well developed protagonist as she continues to come across as a whiny teenage girl who is more concerned about the boy liking her than trying to save her own life. The rest of the characters are not well written, the plot is wearing very thin, and the thrill is just gone. I don’t care what happens to anyone or anything in this series. This book made me not care.

'The Replaced' is the thrilling second installment in a young adult science fiction trilogy. Our main character, Kyra, is finally back after being taken for five years. She's on the run from the NSA and seeks out others like her who have been returned. Kyra is dead set on finding Tyler - the guy she's in love with who was also taken. So when her group finds a message stating that Tyler might be alive but captured by an underground government organization - one that experiments on people who have been returned. Kyra knows she's risking her life by going to find Tyler. She might be walking right into a trap they've set for her, or worse, Tyler might not be the same person she fell in love with. Will she be able to find Tyler and save him? Or will the people she's running from finally catch up to her?

I've read several of the author's other books, so I have to admit that I had some pretty high expectations and hopes for this one. Once again, the author knocked it out of the park. The book surpassed all of my expectations and hopes - and then continued on to blow my mind. It's hard to write a review after reading a book that sticks with you long after you're done reading it - my mind is scattered all over the place, so I apologize if I ramble on or don't make much sense. First off, I'm going to say it again - I absolutely loved this book. Sometimes the second book in a series can tank and end up ruining the series. In my opinion, this sequel was just as good as the first. The author's talent is clearly evident from the very beginning of the story - I found myself sucked back into Kyra's world from the first paragraph. It was like I had never left. The book was fast paced and gripping - it had me reading as fast as I could to see what would happen next. There were lots of twists and turns in the story that I totally didn't see coming, which - in my opinion - made the novel even better. This book has something for everyone - science fiction, fantasy, paranormal/supernatural elements, action, suspense, and lots of thrills - and lovers of all types of fiction would surely enjoy this book and series.

Kyra is a great main character for the series/book. She's strong - mentally and physically - and can take on serious bad guys and obstacles that get in her way. Once she has her mind set on something, she's determined to see it through and will go to any length to make sure it gets done. She matures even more in this book and I really enjoyed watching her character grow. She has to make hard decisions and do things she never thought she would just to stay alive. I'm excited to see what she'll do in the final book and where things will end. The plot continued to be unique and exciting - I was riveted from the beginning and didn't want the book to end. The author continues to surprise the reader with each passing chapter. I can't wait to see where the final book will go and what surprises await us. I very highly recommend this book (and series) to fans of all genres, as there's a bit of something for everyone - especially those who enjoy science fiction, fantasy, aliens, and thrillers.

I want to thank Harper Teen for supplying me with a copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.

I absolutely adored The Taking. The characters, the plot, the everything. And then, when it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, I had to have the next book. So jumping into this one was no effort at all. If you haven't read the first book in the series, STOP HERE! This review will contain spoilers for that book! So turn around, go back to the first book and READ IT!

This book picks right back up where the first left off. Kyra has lost her father and Tyler. And now she's part of the rebel crew trying to outwit and outrun the NSA. You can imagine this does not come easy.

Kyra remains the tough as nails girl we knew in the first book. She's intent of finding Tyler. Her life since she was returned has been filled with much heartache. so losing him was the icing on the cake. She spends much of the book wondering where he is and how things will be when they are reunited. I don't see her change much in this book until the very end. But I won't get into that too much because I don't want to spoil things. One thing she works on during this book is honing her power. It's something that could be of great use if she just knew how to control it.

We get to know Simon a bit better in this book. We see where he has come from and learn a bit about his background. We also see him develop a strong pull to Kyra. Since Tyler is not in the picture Kyra feels the pull back. But she squashes it because all she wants is Tyler.

The pacing of this book was a bit slow for me. I was not as riveted as I was in the first book. There is less action, more development of characters and relationships. We also meet a bunch of new characters, which gave the book a more interesting feel. And, of course, there are traitors in the mist, which Kyra and her crew don't figure out until very close the end of the book.

There is a big twist in the plot of this book, about who Kyra actually is, which explains the title. But you'll just have to read it to find out exactly what I mean.

I didn't love this book as much as the first for sure. I was missing characters and, while I was happy to meet new people, I still wanted to see some of the old ones from the first book. Some did eventually appear, but it's not until later in the book and I really would have liked to see it earlier.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read the next one!

While a number of readers have panned this installment, I enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed the first book, The Taking. It's a wild and fast read. (There is a plot point that troubles me though (although not enough to have me not read the books)- in book one we learned that although Simon looks about 18, he's really about 49 years old. If so, what does he see in a 16 year old teenager? And, should we be interested in that romance? I have to ignore that detail in order to not get too bothered about that aspect of the story). Still, a good YA read.

I started out reading this and then switched to audio. The beginning was a bit slow. I was disappointed in this book because I loved book 1 so much. The story did pick up during the end of the book.

While this definitely fell in the "second book syndrome", i still really enjoyed it, considering it only took me about 2 hours to read it.

I finally decided to start this series since I know the 3rd book is coming out in 2 months and it’s spring break, so why not series-binge? I read the Taking and now I read The Replaced. I’m really enjoying this series. This sequel does not disappoint. It’s just as good as the first book. The only probably I had with it was the lack of Tyler, and Kyra romance with him. The Taking series is a fun, entertaining and mysterious sci-fi read. Perfect for fan of the X-files. I watched the new 6-part series recently, so I felt in the mood for some alien stuff.

To recap The Taking, Kyra Agnew, a 16-year old girl from Burlington, Washington, was taken after her high school softball team won the championship in 2009. She got into an argument with her dad, exited the car and saw a blinding light. She wakes up on the ground behind a gas station thinking she somehow choose to sleep outside for the night. She doesn’t find out that actually 5 years have gone buy since that night until mistake her boyfriend’s younger brother Tyler for her boyfriend Austin. Tyler who was only 12 last time she saw him, and is now suddenly looking 17. She starts to fall for Tyler, since Austin already moved on. The NSA is after Kyra, and wants to experiment on her. Kyra meet Simon, another Returned who knows more about this stuff and she learns that normal Returned usually come back within 48 hours, not 5 long years. She can heal faster than the others, see in the dark, hold her break longer, sleep less and move stuff with her mind. Kyra finds out her blood is toxic and she infected Tyler accidently. Kyra tries to save Tyler by taking him to a place where abduction happen a lot and want the aliens to save Tyler by making him a Returned. Agent Truman comes after them. Kyra uses telekinesis to get the gun away. Fireflies appear and Tyler is taken, and Kyra is knocked out.

In the Replaced, Kyra, Simon, Jett and Willow are at a different camp than the one Simon ran, since that one was attacked. She makes friends with a girl named Natty. Thom runs the camp there. Simon’s camp stays separate from the Silent Creeker of Thom’s camp. They hear news of Tyler possibly being held captive by Agent Truman’s Daylighters (the shady NSA section). There’s also a message that may have be sent by Kyra’s father. Kyra, Simon, Willow, Natty, Thom, and Jett go on a rescue mission, which turns into a bust. They escape, but can’t go back to their camp, so they end up traveling all the way to another camp in Utah, outside Zion National Park. Since they’re being tracked and their photos are out there, the have to change the appearance. So in a gas station bathroom, Kyra dyes her blond hair a reddish brown, Natty dyes hers black and Willow’s hair goes from brown to brown (not much of a disguise).

The other camp is big, but is run by someone Simon and Thom had a falling out with. When they arrive, they’re treated like prisoners. The leader runs the camp like a boot camp for soldiers. Also, there may be a traitor in the mist, giving information to the Daylighters. Kyra runs into someone she never expected to find at the camp

I enjoyed this sequel. I really liked how many interesting twists there were. Especially near the end. I suspected as much just based on the title. I really think Kyra’s abilities and alien hybrid DNA stuff are cool. I like books about super powered teens. I still a little disappointed in the romance of this sequel. I kind of feel like the author wants out hearts to break over Tyler by making him so wonderful and then taking him away.

I recommend this series to fan of: The Rules trilogy by Stacy Kade, The Host by Stephanie Meyer, Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, Unremembered by Jessica Brody, Mila 2.0 by Debra Driza, Blackout by Robison Wells, Rush (the Game Trilogy) by Eve Silver. Pretty much anything with aliens, or teens gaining superpowers. X-file fans, Fringe fans, Kimberly Derting fans (I only read the Body Finder series).

Cover Art Review: Cool looking cover. Looks like stars in the type. Too bad it’s not metallic.

The Taking, while enjoyable, wasn't my favorite Kimberly Derting book. I liked it well enough, but my sole reason for heading into The Replaced was my hunt for answers. I am happy I got some - but overall? EH. All the issues I had with the first book rolled over into The Replaced; bringing along some new and irritating things.

It's been a long time since I have thought of a book as having SECOND BOOK SYNDROME but that is exactly how I feel about The Replaced.. As I mentioned, we do get some answers that were left unanswered from The Taking, I would even go as far to say giving us answers we hadn't even thought to ask yet. There is more action too - and we are introduced to a whole new cast of secondary characters and even an interesting plot twist thrown in. But I was so frustrated!

My two biggest issues are two major plot points - and both are equally there for further the plot and set things up for book 3. I really dislike it when things are inserted for the purpose to move things along. If the chain of events comes natural, then I am all for it. But it felt so forced!

One - Tyler. I didn't wholly buy into their romance in The Taking, because so little time passed when the declarations of love were spouted (don't get me started on the whole brother thing - I didn't even tough that subject before). So the fact that 2/3 of this book was the crew actually looking for Tyler was just down right irritating. Not to mention, once he is found?

My other issue is Simon. Not him per se, but the possibility of a love triangle in the making. WHY? I don't mind love triangles, I really don't. But really?

Those two major issues aside - I was not a fan of the pacing either. I ran into a situation similar with a book I read a few weeks ago, where there was so much going on but nothing at the same time. I do feel that Kyra has grow up a little - and is really starting to come to turns with her new reality. The ending too, revealed a lot about what is to come in the third book and did leave us with a small cliffhanger.

Overall - The Replaced was just an okay read for me. I will be reading book 3 - I just HAVE to know how things wrap up. And Derting is great a finishing off series.

Plot-wise, this was a great follow-up to The Taking. We finally get some answers, and I like where the story is going. The only thing I'm iffy about is the romance aspect of the book, so my feelings about the book overall are quite mixed.

It's been twenty-five days since Tyler, Kyra's dad, and Agent Truman disappeared. Kyra is in Silent Creek camp, still looking for evidence that the vanished have returned. When they get a lead, a group of them decide to follow it. Kyra's desperate to find Tyler, but she can't know if the boy returned is the same as he used to be.

The pace of this one was great, with an introduction to the new characters in the first few chapters, and then right into the action in the next few. I liked getting to know the characters in this book - Simon, Jett, Natty, Thom, and Willow. They're all very different from each other but somehow, along with Kyra, they work great as a team. I especially liked Simon in this book, and I'm glad we get to know more about him. He's a leader, but he's not ruthless or dispassionate. He's kind to Kyra, and he empathizes with her despite the fact that he's pursuing a girl in love with someone else.

And that brings me to the romance. Why, why, why was a love triangle introduced in this book? Not that I really liked Kyra and Tyler together, but now that Tyler's missing, Simon has to make a move? And then begins the clichéd girl-can't-pick-between-two-amazing-guys plot thread. Ugh. Simon deserves better, he really does.

I love the characters on their own, though. Simon's awesome, and Kyra really steps up in this book too. She's trying to get a hold on her newfound powers while doing everything she can to find the people she loves. She's stubborn and badass and doesn't take no for an answer. What she wants, she makes sure she gets. Kyra's strong personality really started to grow on me. I hope it remains the same in the next book!

There are, of course, a few twists in this. One involving Kyra was pretty big, and I'm curious to see how that plays out in the next book. There's another one that's again very clichéd, and I was disappointed by that. Regardless, it works well with the storyline, so the plot is redeemable. The next book is the finale of the trilogy, so it's got to be jam-packed with action and of course answers to all our questions. I can't wait to get my hands on it!

The typical road story with that abysmal 2nd book syndrome .... Sorry The Replaced was not my most favorite of the series. Didn't really enjoy this as much as I did the first ..... but it did provide some answers. Kyra has found out that she was not the only one taken, there have been more ..... and the 'but' arrives ..... but she is also the only one to have been gone the longest. Making her different from the rest. When Tyler was accidentally exposed to her blood, he ran the risk of death. In a last ditch attempt to save him, she have him to the aliens that took her.

'The Replaced' began sometime after 'The Taking' ended. Kyra is getting used to life in the camp as well as her mysterious powers. But also worried for Tyler. It has been weeks since the aliens had taken him and still there has been no news of his return. The Taking, I loved. It had an intriguing concept and strong characters in Kyra and Tyler. But in 'The Replaced' it felt like back to square one.

Second books usually don't see much action but the heavy duty travelling. While The Replaced proved to be a fast read, it did felt dragging. While we loved the shocks coming our way in a bid to spice up the story and we get some answers but a whole lot more important ones are still left unanswered. Also while Kyra was a strong protagonist, she was still weaker here. She pined & whined for Tyler throughout, understandable. Did feel sorry for her didn't we ..... anybody can go mad in such circumstances but I still didn't care much for her here .....

Of course when the actual action does start, it starts with a bang and goes on nonstop till the end. And somehow they still find a way to establish a triangle ....... but the good & the bad combined this was an ok read. Didn't intrigue or mesmerize like the first book but it was something ..... Here's to hoping Kimberly Derting comes up with a better next book.

The Replaced is a book that I was eager to read because of the ending on previous book and I was very happy to find out that this book starts exactly where The Taking left off. Kyra hiding from the NSA (a governmental organization that captures the Returned), but at the same time trying to find news about her father and Tyler; so when she learns of a possible sighting of a boy that might be Tyler, she doesn´t think twice and decide to go in search of him which triggers a series of events that threaten them as returnees and in the company of Simon, Willow and Jett, she should seek shelter in a camp for returnees like no other that she has known so far and where she doesn´t know whom to trust.

I really enjoyed this second book of the trilogy The Taking, as we learn a bit more about the beginnings of the first meetings between the government and the aliens(?), about their deal with them and has some interesting twists that really surprised me,

The plot begins with a good pace, but soon it slow down in the middle, to then to pick up speed in the end, where secrets come to light, identities are known, we get to know a little more experiments on the Returned and there is a small confrontation. I liked the ending, it was good and solid. The Replaced is a good second book in a trilogy and I recommended it for those that like YA sci-fi books.

Oh god, April, seriously? I can't wait that long, I need to know what's going to happen!

UPDATE:
This book was all I'd wanted it to be. It might have been a little slow in the beginning, but the rest was all the better. It had so much action and was just so wonderfully written, my greatest respect to the Kimberly Derting!
