The once unbeatable Band of the Hawk is smashed, and their former leader, Griffith, has made an unholy pact with the demon lords of the Godhand, sacrificing his former troops to resurrect his crippled body and ascend to stand in power beside these profane gods. The Invocation of Doom has unleashed a plague of unspeakable horrors upon the earth, and the first battle not only shatters the Hawks, but the hand of their champion, Guts, and the mind of their captain and Guts’ lover, Casca. And while time may heal some of Guts’ wounds, it will not heal his desire for vengeance. And his discovery of a gigantic, dragon-slaying sword might be just the ticket to deal out some king-sized payback!
Also included in this "Berserk Prototype," the very first Berserk story, created during Kentaro Miura’s college days as his audition that sold the series!
Kentarou Miura (三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.
That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump.
In 1988, Miura bounced back with a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, as an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves (王狼, ōrō?) based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken. It was published in the monthly Japanese Animal House magazine in issues 5 and 7 of that year.
In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future.
In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War.
Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1]
Miura provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo, whose voice is taken from the Japanese singer and actor, Gackt.
Miura passed away on May 6, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. due to acute aortic dissection.
Oops its three a.m! i am so tired, my eyes hurt, my body hurts, and i can't sleep for some reason! and i finished the volume yay!! Amazing volume, and amazing start for the black swords man part of the story. I liked so much how the black swords man came to be, his hand, and the big ass sword, and all that was really amazing. I also like the new demon, and how that part came to be, and how they teased us in so many covers with this particular apostle, which is just making her debut as well. Of course its amazing to have puck back! Only downside to this volume is the prototype story for berserk, which is just an amateur story by kentaro, when he first planned berserk, But its also important for checking out, how the story developed, and how much the art has developed, since the idea was first conceived.
Like half the volume was an old chapter from the prototype of Berserk that’s not canon. I don’t mind it being there if it doesn’t cut the actual story short, but it did. Not a fan personally.
I didn’t really care for the plot for the most part of this volume but. Demon Infant chapter has ruined me. I’m. gone. But HEY! my baby Puck the meme king is back and I couldn’t be happier. Also the art has improved??? Again?? I don’t know how you improve something that’s already perfect but. I mean, it’s Berserk, what did I expect?
This volume can be divided into two parts: the epilogue of the Golden Age and the beginning of the Conviction arc.
The Golden Age wraps up pretty well here. Guts is on the road to his darkest place. He's setting out to fight an unwinnable battle as a way of escaping from dealing with his trauma and avoiding his responsibility to support those who are important to him. I'm going to make no bones about it, folks. Gut's decision to go out and fight monsters is an utterly selfish one that is is worse for all of those involved. With the eclipse, Guts has been reset back to 0. He is in the same place where he was after Gambino tried to kill him. He's a broken human going from battle to battle because that's all he knows. The work he put into developing a sense of belonging and a purpose for living has been utterly destroyed by the eclipse. So he gives up and throws himself into the grinder that is fighting apostles. Guts himself admits it- revenge is just an excuse. What is really motivating him is anger. But anger is almost always a safer front for more vulnerable feelings, particularly with men. What's really going on is that Guts is disheartened, hurt, scared, and grieving. Casca needs him, but her pain is a dragon that he is too afraid to battle. Supporting an emotionally devastated partner and facing the depths of despair within yourself? That's something Guts isn't equipped to do. He is much more comfortable fighting life or death battles with unbeatable foes for no greater purpose.
And I should say, none of this is a condemnation of Berserk as a series. Guts is one of my favorite characters ever written precisely because of his failures. Berserk is the story of an abused survivor of trauma trying to create purpose in his life. And it's about what happens when that purpose is taken away and you have to claw your way back to a meaningful life. The mistakes Guts along the way- his blind spots, his failures, and the hard truths he avoids. Those are all very understandable and very human mistakes. They are emotionally honest regarding the kind of person that would be borne from what Guts has been through. He is a product of his environment, struggling to do better and be better in a cruel, unfair world. And, slowly but surely, Guts will make his way back to having meaning in life and being a more complete person. In spite of practically every bad thing that could happen to a person happening to Guts, he goes on. He keeps living, keeps trying to make something of his life. People talk about Berserk like it's this pointlessly grotesque, joyless manga. But the reality is that Berserk is a story about hope. In spite of the horrendous brutality it presents, Guts keeps getting back up, keeps learning, keeps growing, and makes progress in overcoming the effects his experiences have had on him. And he ultimately gets there. He finds clarity of mind, makes new bonds, and comes to live a purposeful life. It's a powerful story of personal growth and healing in spite of horrible suffering. It's about finding reasons to live in seeming nihilistic, fatalistic world. And it's moving to watch Guts go through the highs and lows of that journey.
But for now, Guts is definitely in the middle of a low that is only going to get deeper.
I love Guts's response to the townspeople's panic in chapter 97. The villagers mistake Puck for a pseudo-apostle and, understandably, try to run Guts out of the town. His immediate thought is "Maybe they'll calm down if I kill one or two?". During the Golden Age, Guts illustrated emotional and existential nuance in his speech at the bonfire of dreams, his relationship with Casca, his thoughts about Griffith after they part ways, his recognition that he belonged with the hawks all along. But this one line perfectly illustrates just how far Guts has fallen. He takes a kid hostage as
Regardless of how monstrous he becomes, Guts still has a soft spot for Jill. He probably sees a part of himself in her, being a scared child surrounded by violence. It's heavily implied that Jill was raped (or at least that her dad's friends tried to rape her). Additionally, she is the child of an abusive, alcohol, disabled veteran. In the best of times, he probably doesn't have the emotional wherewithal to make sense of these feelings. But in his current low, it's really impressive he is able to muster up the care that he does show. Jill is already this adorable kid, but the relationship she forms with Guts just melts my heart. In the same way that Guts struggles against apostles, she struggles against her own "apostles" in the form of her dad and his friends. On some level I think Guts recognizes their similarities and wants better for her, but doesn't know what to do with that feeling.
Some other odds and ends: I don't like how Rosine is a naked little girl. I get the whole Doctor Manhattan thing of becoming a being who is beyond the social norm of wearing clothes. But I don't want to see a naked little girl in my manga.
I'm happy to have Puck back. He's super sweet and charming. I love how he juxtaposes with Gut's demeanor. He's a pure heart unspoiled by this cruel world. Protect him at all costs.
The big event is over - Griffith is an evil demon lord, the Band of the Hawk is pretty much obliterated, and Casca hasn't psychologically recovered from the battle. Only Guts is still going - and now he's declared his own personal war against Evil.
"Dragons are dragons because humans can't beat 'em. So, what's a man... who beats dragons...?"
And with that we're done with the backstory and back to what Guts was at the beginning - a colossal dickweed. Yet we like him better now just the same, because we know what he's lost and what's driving him forward. Sometimes a bit of a backstory makes all the difference... nevermind ten whole volumes of battle and love and hell. And he's now chased on by people that do not know his story and that only judge him by his cover - as we may have done in the very first volume ourselves. It's a great reversal, almost.
This book also has a prototype edition of Berserk, the very first chapter drawn for a shonen magazine rather than a seinen. Oddly, the art is way better than it was in the actual first few volumes. I guess Miura's art style just naturally worked better with the more cartoonish look for young boys rather than the more rugged and down-to-earth one for men? If so, he's by this time more than made up for it.
Not as epic or climactic now that the Golden Age and Band of the Hawk storylines are finished, but how can I ever give something written by Miura less than 4 stars? This one also gets bonus points for having Miura’s original submission story for Berserk, which is pretty sweet.
Around 3.5. Once again, its only because this feels like an "In-between," volume after the intense crud that just happened. The story here was 'okay.' On the other -and more positive- hand, the beginning of this volume was great.
It's the end of the Golden Age arc, the greatest arc till now.
Griffith fucked up Guts’s and Casca’s lives forever. I feel bad for that poor baby; he wasn’t even given a chance in life yet, and he’s already ruined. Just because Griffith wanted to “teach Guts a lesson” for something that Guts wasn't really responsible for...
I’m glad we’re back to the present; I missed Puck! He’s the only thing that lights things up a little for me.
The Conviction arc: Lost Children chapter wasn’t really entertaining in my first read; let’s see if I’ll change my mind this time.

This is the 14th book in the Berserk series and it was a very fun one. This is the book where Guts finally gets his amazingly awesome sword and the cannon for his arm. There are also some disturbing revelations around Casca being pregnant.
The illustration continues to be amazing. I was also very impressed with how much progress the story made again this volume. I love the “new” Guts with his cannon-arm and giant sword.
This was the first volume that goes outside of the original Berserk anime series and I enjoyed reading this new part of the Berserk story (new to me).
Overall this was a fantastic continuation of the Berserk series. I am loving this series soooo much. I would recommend to mature readers who enjoy fantasy horror manga. These are just so good!
This was a cool one as its pretty much dealing with the fallout of what happened, they are at the mountain where Guts trained, the skull knight explani to Guts whats happening and his future fate and all that and then more things happen, Guts gets the armor, his cannon and knights and leaves Casca and all behind and then FINALLY we catch up with Puck and all in the present after the first few volumes and as they go they meet this strange girl Jill and she tells them of the mysterious elves attacking her village and the villagers apprehension towards Puck and how one of them might be her long lost friend: Rosine! Good volume as we finally get the backstory and jump to the present and the long arc starts here!
Lost Children is my favorite arc of Berserk. The dark & horrific stuff is as nasty as it ever gets, but we still get humor and levity just when necessary. Miura was so confident in his art at this point, cranking out a new chapter every two weeks and _experimenting_ with so many different impressions without modifying the vision in the least.
Marks the end of the Golden Age and the beginning of the Conviction arc. This has been an insanely wild ride, and we finally got to see why Guts is the way he is ( a struggler).
“Yes. This is a fairytale for children.” No... no it is not!
What’s it about? That would involve spoilers, skip!
Why it gets 5 stars: The story is very good. It wraps up the prequel stuff and starts a new arc. This new arc is very intense and interesting. The artwork is really cool! So in this volume it’s great as always for this series and there’s a lot of great splash pages! The characters are still interesting and well written. There’s some sweet action here! Things get very intense and bloody. This book isn’t too predictable. There’s some pretty good comic relief. The character Puck is actually very humorous and I know some may not care for it but I actually like having a bit of comic relief in a series as completely fucked up as this. I would also add that the way Miura makes it work is amazing! So this series is not just fantasy but also horror and holy shit, does this volume deliver great horror stuff. If you like tons of gore, vicious flesh eating elves and grotesque demon monsters you should be satisfied with the contents of this volume. This volume is quite emotional at times. I’m confused how anyone can read this and only see it as “that edgy rape manga with the piles of blood” because while this series as a whole definitely includes lots of blood and several rape scenes it is also one of the most emotional pieces of storytelling I have witnessed in comics. The ending makes me excited for the next volume. There’s a little bonus that shows the story Miura made as a pitch for Berserk. While a bit different from the main series it was cool to see.
Overall: Berserk is fucking amazing! If you don’t mind graphic content (of any kind I should warn!) and like fantasy and/or horror but haven’t tried this series... what the hell are you doing? You are seriously missing out! This is an incredible piece of storytelling that is always dark, interesting and intense! I’m 14 volumes deep into this and haven’t given a single volume less than 4-stars so that is a sign of quality I’d say!
While "Berserk Prototype" is interesting, Miura's original tone was different. Puck re-entering the narrative is actually welcome as there is a comic relief character and Miura's gives Puck some actual narrative work and not just uses him as a proxy for the reader. Going back to the story present and picking up Black Swordsman arc left off, the introduction of some more apostles, the Holy Chain Knights, and the general creepiness of the Lost Children arc behind here.
Berserk is awesome. The last two volumes before this were an extreme high because of how it flipped through your emotions. This volume is still kickass but we finally go back to Guts in the present and when that happens it becomes monster of the week a little bit which is where the shortcoming is. It's all well and good but it feels like it's missing a chapter where instead of that chapter they put the Berserk prototype chapter.
But after the eclipse Guts and Casca are at their lowest points. Guts sets out to slay the monsters as the Black Swordsman and Casca is left to stay behind so she doesn't hurt herself after her mind has been lost.
The art is fabulous, the writing has gained a new depth after the eclipse, and I missed Puck.
The prototype chapter was neat but is essentially a condensed version of the first three volumes.
Still worth continuing but there's a dip here because of how good the previous volumes were.
Rate:5/5
This is a drastic changing point for the series. I consider this next phase both good and bad. Some amazing events happen later, but we also get introduced to Puck and Isidro as main players in the story. So . . . yeah . . . Golden Age has a leg up on those two utter abominations.
