"There is nothing so terrible as a story untold."

Queen Song is one of the novellas of Red Queen series. Here, we are told about the backstory of Queen Coriane, the mother of Prince Cal from Red Queen. Coriane belongs to the Silver blood, under the House Jacos-- a not-so-well-endowed clan compared to other Silver bloods. She writes her life events in a dairy and conveys her emotions there. Her ordinary life changed when Prince Tibe, heir to the court of Norta, fell in love with her and asked her hand for marriage, which of course, became the reason why the traditional Queenstrial was never realized. This led to conflicts and certain intrigues that tested Coriane's strength and belief while carrying her crown as a Queen.

It's Victoria Aveyard's flawless and breathtaking writing style that made me embrace this novella. Once again I was amazed by how she was able to bring this story in an epic level. There were no action scenes here but all the events were simply engaging. I loved how the simple plotline surprisingly became extraordinarily beautiful in the end.

The romance between Coriane and Tibe was sweet and raw, heartbreaking at times. There was also a good pacing here and the Silver blood's powers were drawn neatly.

Perhaps Coriane's character development was the one that's lacking here. She came out fragile and weak in the beginning but she was starting to get tough in the near-end. Unfortunately, she went back to being weak again in the end, surrendering to her fate and accepting her vulnerability that she couldn't do anything to save herself and the people she cared about.

All in all, this novella is totally compelling despite some minor flaws. It's nice to know Coriane's story after she was mysteriously mentioned in Red Queen. It was written in a poignant yet beautiful prose, something that holds you together to read it. When it comes to the ending, it was a bit hazy and mind-boggling, thus leaving us with a big question: WHO DID IT?

Okay first of all:

I always knew that Elara was an - excuse my crude choice of words - evil bitch, but holy mackerel that probably was the understatement of the century! That woman is pure evil and after reading “Queen Song” I just want that witch to burn. XD

Well, enough of the pleasantries and back to the review. Since it was just a short novella I decided to point out what I liked and what I didn’t like. That way you don’t have to put up with my endless babbling and ranting and still will have enough time to continue to read your (no doubt) awesome books! ;-)

Warning: The review might contain some minor spoilers from now on!

What I didn’t like:

- It took a little while until the story line picked up pace and even though there were only six chapters the first 3 were pretty lengthy.
- I wanted to read more about Julian and Sara but the two unfortunately were once again degraded to be side characters. So yeah, not much of additional info on that front.
- After chapter three everything went to hell! *lol* Hmm okay, I’m not even sure if that’s negative so let’s just scratch this, okay? xD

What I liked:

- I loved the gentle and balanced relationships between Prince Robert, King Tiberias Calore V. and Queen Anabel. Those three really seemed to care for each other and it was more than just nice to see how much they respected and loved each other. =D
- I liked that Prince Tibe chose Coriane because he truly loved her and didn’t give a damn about Queenstrial. Haha
- I loved how I was shaken after the last chapter. All those different feels… *shudder*
- And in addition to that I enjoyed how intense the book became once Coriane moved to the court. Jeez! I’m still having heart palpitations here. *lol*
- The way Coriane loved everything about her little baby boy Cal! XD

So yeah even though the novella started kind of slow it really got to me in the end. What made it even worse were Coriane’s diary entries and her thoughts that actually caused me to swallow. Over those last two chapters the book got an oppressive edge and my heart literally skipped some beats.

In conclusion as always a few quotes I liked:

“She walked the city many times in hopes of finding a place she enjoyed, somewhere to anchor her in the newly tossing sea of her life.
She found no such place – instead she found a person.”

“The boy was the sun in Coriane’s sky. On hard days, he split the darkness. On good days, he lit the world.”

*Super spoiler quotes!!! Don't click if you don't want to know the end*

If you liked the Red Queen series this is definitely a good addition to the books and certainly will help you to bridge the time until the fourth book finally arrives!!!

“She was happy, yes, in her own way, as best as she knew.
But there’s a difference between a single candle in darkness and a sunrise.”

Oh my goodness, this whole damn novella was so gosh darn sad! From beginning to end I felt my heart getting heavier and heavier with heartache for Coriane. That poor girl, she was so sweet and had such a gentle soul. She didn't deserve all the shit she had to suffer through. Elara as we already knew was an evil corrupted bitch but this really shows just how black her heart and her soul really was, all to win a Crown!!! It was also nice getting to see that Prince Tibe chose Coriane because he truly unwaveringly loved her, Queenstrial be damned! It also gives us a better understanding as to why he favored Cal so much. Because Cal was all he had felt of the Women he loved. Coriane had so much love for baby Cal. Cal was her light on her darkest of days. Ugh just writing this is making me sad all over again 😭. I love the way this was written, it really drew me in and I couldn't read it fast enough. Hell, I wish it was a LOT longer.

I usually struggle more to get into novellas/short stories because they are so short that by the time I get involved and start to care about the characters, it's already over.

It was nice seeing how things all began between Coriane and Tiberius "Tibe" the 6th (I think it's the 6th?). We had a few pieces of information from the series, but it was cute to see how Tibe truly loved Coriane, and tragic at the same time to see how Coriane felt like a failure and how she was all alone in her mental struggle (thanks Elara for that 🙄). Tibe was very different in this novella too, and it makes sense now why he always seemed to favor Cal over Maven. even though both are his sons, Cal is the one he had with his one true love.

I am also wondering what happened to Prince Robert. I don't remember him being mentioned in the series... Or at least he was not important enough for me to remember him, but he seemed like such a sweet and likable character, I would have loved to see more of him.

Not sure if I liked it. Though maybe I did. The beginning was a bit unpleasant but then it progressed into quite a neat introduction to a world. The Red Queen World.

The final accords - lovely and lively. A warrior queen. A king and his 'paramour', M-M style. A prince who 'intoxicates' himself. A girl who likes equations and mechanisms. A guy who loves history. Stuffy nobility, Silver and gifted. Reds, blesed with purpose to their lives.

And Coriane's final... what a crescendo!

There is nothing so terrible as a story untold. (c)
Q:
And her gray eyes, once bright stars, seemed dark, full of shadows. (c)

I remember. There is no greater pain or punishment than memory. (c)

They drank in the morning with greed, a quenched man still gulping at water while others died of thirst. (c)

She was no great intellect, charmer, beauty, or warrior. Her usefulness lay in marriage, in alliance, and there were none to be found in her brother’s books or protection. (c)

Queen Anabel, an oblivion of House Lerolan, did just that. She sat on the king’s left, her smile curling, eyes on her only son. Her military uniform was open at the neck, revealing a firestorm of jewels at her throat, red and orange and yellow as the explosive ability she possessed. (c)
Q:
At least she has spine enough to eat her food. (c)

“I was just wondering how many tons of metal we’re standing on, hoping it will keep us up.”

The cage of the capital was not a happy place for Coriane.

She thought that every time, and she was always wrong. (c)

How could servants create such beauty and still be considered inferior? They are capable of wonders different from our own.
They gained skill through handiwork and practice, rather than birth. Is that not equal to Silver strength, if not greater than it? But she did not dwell on such thoughts long. She never did. This is the way of the world. (c)
Q:
Something tightened in Coriane’s chest, an unfamiliar sensation. Was it . . . happiness? She thought so. (c)

But there is a difference between a single candle in darkness, and a sunrise. (c)

“It gets easier,” Queen Anabel whispered into her ear. Coriane wanted to believe her. (c)

Usually this is where the fairy tale ends. Stories don’t go much further than this moment, and I fear there’s a good reason for it. (c)
Q:
... simply could not believe how her mind seemed to spin out of control, happy one second and then distraught the next, bouncing between emotions like a kite in a gale. (c)
Q:
It might be a crime to write such things, but I am a queen. I am the queen. I can say and write what I think. (c)
Q:
You are still the little girl in a dusty room, forgotten, unwanted, out of place. You are queen of everything, mother to a beautiful son, wife to a king who loves you, and still you cannot find it in yourself to smile. (c)

Basically, Queen Song is about a depressed, sad girl with a diary. She thought herself as nothing. It's like Juliette Ferrars all over again. And that's it. The end. Just kidding. Lol.

I think this novella is quite unnecessary. I don't particularly care about Corianne Jacos. I'm sorry. I admit I quite care about her diary but boy, I'm disappointed because it is just of full of angsty monologues and narratives. I anticipated that I will get secrets or anything but no. *sighs*

I like the ending anyway so 2 stars.

”There is nothing so terrible as a story untold”.

***3,5 stars for me***

While i was reading the "Red queen", i catched myself many times to thinking about the previous queen, Cal's mother, Coriane!!!
And with that novel, i took a glimpse of her life before she become queen and after...
It didn't reveal too much about her death, but as i was pretty sure i knew who was the guilty of that crime!!!

I liked that i learned about how was her life before goes to court and i liked the fact that the Prince fell in love with her and didn't care for anything except to married her...
I liked that there was a connection between them...

Elara still was a big thorn in this book and for once again she didn't give me any reason to like her...
I hated her before and i still hate her...
The only thing that i will love to learn is the way that Elara manage to crawl in King's life and how she took Coriana's place...

That it will be so interesting!!!

So... That was a quite interesting novel and i can not wait for the second book of the series because everything are too fluid and i have to know what will happen next with Cal, Mare and Maven..

god, i was expecting this book to flop but it's been a couple days since i finished it and i can't stop thinking about it. even though the contents of this novella are referenced in book four, i'm glad i read it after the series to get the full context. i'm sure it also works great as a prequel or to read it in between the actual storyline. the calore family stays slaying

"These golden walls will be my tomb."

Very interesting. This short story is told from Coriane's perspective when she was a young adult.Well,we mostly know her as Cal's mother. We get to find out how she met her husband Tiberias and how she handled being a Queen.

"The Calores are children of fire, as strong and destructive as their flame, but Cal will not be like the others before. Fire can destroy, fire can kill, but it can also create. Forest burned in the summer will be green by spring, better and stronger than before. Cal’s flame will build and bring roots from the ashes of war. The guns will quiet, the smoke will clear, and the soldiers, Red and Silver both, will come home. One hundred years of war, and my son will bring peace. He will not die fighting. He will not. HE WILL NOT."

I think I love Coriane.

Queen Song is a novella about The deceased Queen Coriane, the mother of Cal. This confirm that Elara is a bitch in all the extension of the word!! And this pulled me out of some doubts, I really hope that in Glass Sword tell us more about House Jacos and the powers of the silvers. Also I love the words Coriane write in her diary about Cal and the love she had for him and her desire for that he will change the things when he reign.

Can you believe that I'm rating this novella higher than Red Queen, the actual book? Insane, I know, but at least Coriane was more likable than Mare. I do however, think that Elara is a bitch for what she did to Coriane and that Cori should've stood up for herself and make Elara suffer.

Tibe really loved her, also seeing part of his past was amazing! So sad that prince Robert wasn't mentioned in Red Queen. Also, now I know where Cal has that thing for fix up machines.

"He was the prince. the future king. And she was no one at all, a limp excuse for a Silver daughter of a High House."
This novella was clever. I have been so curious with the first queen, Cal's mother story. All we got to know her was that she was the king's first wife, a Singer, Julian's sister and the queen before the cold-hearted Elara took over. It was written on a third-person point of view given the fact that Queen Coriane has already past away - wasn't expecting that. I thought that this novella was going to be composed of entry on a Diary where the queen kept all of her secrets - I was obviously wrong and it was the best mistake ever.

Queen Song was simply amazing. Coriane and Tibe's love story was also included and even though it was not really detailed I couldn't have asked for more. It was like a Cinderella story, only Coriane was not a slave, although they are poor, they still belong to a High House with a Silver Blood and instead of a wicked Step-mother, we got here instead a wicked/evil queen wanna be in Elara. Although tragic, it was sweet and believable, being a crowned prince and all. We also get to follow the Queen's happiness and hurt and anger and desperation and depression when she was finally able to get a son, Cal, after the 3rd miscarriage.

Her characterization was well portrayed, although a bit unlikeable. She likes to down herself a lot even before she met the crowned prince, always moping around feeling sorry for herself, for the dream she wouldn't be able to live, she was weak. She did tried to fight, however, she didn't know her enemy well which eventually end up to her death as we all know.

The ending was obviously rushed. I think it has something to do with the secrecy and mystery that the book is trying to keep up. Although we all have our suspicions, the question still remains on who really is behind the Queen's death? and.. How?

2 La Cenicienta deprimida STARS

" There is nothing so terrible as a story untold. "

description

Bonita historia.
Horrible desarrollo.

description

description

description

The start was really confusing: it seemed like the language wasn't English at all - very hard to read and enjoy. But in chapter #2, I had recognized Victoria's old style, it was a relief. The story itself is indeed sad, we all know that Coriane will be dead and Elara will take her place. At the start, I thought that Cal's mother was a brat and angsty chick, but I loved her later. It was interesting to see young Tiberias the Sixth and his parents, but I was happier when Cal was born. Such a shame this story wasn't about this fat and cute baby) Overall, the bonus is nice (not super necessary but totally not a waste of time).

It is always fun when author's give us this look inside a character, whether they be good or evil but I must admit, its the evil ones, that really stand out and get my attention.

To be inside their heads, even from a distance as is the case in this story, just fascinates me and really does add depth to the character.

I feel for Cal and for the woman that he would never get to love or know and of course for the woman that dared to cross Elara's path.

I absolutely love that the author gave us this. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was a great addition to the series. To see how it all started, how it all came about, was a treat and I can't wait to dive into book two now.

Such a heartbreaking novella.

You know, Julian was right. I can definitely see Mare in Coriane. Mare is a more bitter, hardened version of the Singer Queen, but they have an astoundingly similar way of thinking.

Both stand alone in a sea of people, never sure of anything, least of all their place in the world, Strong in their own way too.

I could also see Cal in Coriane's love for building things and taking them apart to see how they function and that might have been the only thing that made me smile.

Mother and son sure would have had a blast together. They would have created magnificent things.

It wasn't fair. Elara was a vicious, heartless bitch. I can't believe how she wormed her way into Coriane's mind and slowly, but steadily led her to madness and death.

Urrgh! I wanted her to go through all the terror she inflicted on Cal's mother. A thousand times worse.
