When I returned from London, I relocated to Chicago where I lived for five years. There, I graduated from the Second City Training Center and performed improv, Shakespeare, comedies and dramas--I even sang and danced on a cruise boat--without falling in Lake Michigan! A classmate of mine from Second City and I created and performed a two woman show for a year before I braved it alone doing stand-up comedy. It was during this time I began to write an adult novel about a rock star--I had always enjoyed writing...
Fast forward a couple of years along with a move home where I was performing “stand-up” at comedy clubs in the area. On a plane to LA to decide my fate-- “to move to LA or not to move to LA” that is the question, my big bro, Mark, coincidentally with the same last name as mine (author of PRINCES IN EXILE, DREAMS OF THE SOLO TRAPEZE and STARCROSSED) handed me a young adult book he found at the library he thought I’d like to read during the flight.
As I read the book, I thought, ‘I can do this!’
I returned from LA, and instead of moving there, I wrote my story about the rock star as a young adult novel and called it JOHNNY LIGHTNING.
Mark, my writing mentor, edited JL for me. He was kind enough to send the manuscript to his publisher in Belgium--Facet--and they published it! In Dutch!
I was now on a new life path!
In 2001 HarperCollins made me an offer I couldn’t refuse! Not only was HarperCollins going to publish TEENAGE MERMAID, but it was in a language I could read and book stores I could walk into! HarperCollins also bought VAMPIRE KISSES and COMEDY GIRL.
It was a dream come true!
Since beginning my new life path, VAMPIRE KISSES, TEENAGE MERMAID, and MY MOTHER, THE CLOWN have been published by Facet in Belgium and JOHNNY LIGHTNING has been published in Germany by Ravensburger.
Then my fabulous editor at HarperCollins asked me for a sequel to VAMPIRE KISSES!

I don’t care that the writing is simplistic. I don’t care that the main character herself is simplistic. I don’t even care that these books were written for much, much younger readers than me, say… 14 year olds.
I don’t care about any of that, because Vampire Kisses always puts a smile on my face. Some will find it to be silly; some will find it to be naïve; I find it to be refreshing, original and funny, even though after a few days I can’t even remember what the plot was about.
Sixteen year old Raven is an outsider among the people of the small town that she’s living in. She has a wardrobe from hell, she loves pretty much anything that spells “Goth” and she has a vivid (much too vivid) fantasy world to escape to. She constantly dreams of embracing the darkness and she seems to have hit the jackpot when she meets a boy, Alexander, who she suspects might be a vampire.
Truth be told, the only thing that seems to be connecting these two is the same taste in clothes and as the series progresses, you can’t help but wonder if Raven really likes Alexander for who he is or just because of his nature. Even though she’s sixteen she sounds to be much younger than that - the book is written in first person and it’s her POV that we’re following throughout the series. The world setting isn't realistic, considering that Raven stands pretty much alone as the freak of the town without any worries whatsoever. People do stare at her and some of her classmates do make fun of her, but that’s nothing that escaping to her dream world can’t fix. If only it were that easy in real life…
So why the three stars? Because this book is not meant to be taken seriously. It’s a fun, fast read, set pretty much as a shoujo manga. I for one would take Raven over Nora (Hush, Hush) or Zoey (House of Night) at any time.

I was expecting a lot more from this book.
I felt that the characters were very stereotypical, two-dimensional and that the story was predictable. Also, I hate the kind of stories where the two leads 'fall in love' in a matter of 24 hours, etcetera... with hardly any interaction. This is what happens with Sterling and... oh right, Raven...
I guess I shouldn't have expected a lot more from this book when the main characters name is so silly.

Ugh, so this is going to be mostly a rant.... just warning ya.
With a title like 'Vampire Kisses', I, the reader, would assume that
a: this book has vampires in it
b. it is a romance novel, with kissing
c. Whoever our character is, he/she is kissing a vampire
While some of these are true.... They might even all be true to a point, but not in the way I had expected or wanted!
Really, we don't even know "our guy" is a vampire until pretty much the last page!!! You might assume it or think it, but the author does her part to make us think it's just a ruse.... really?!?!?! Stupid.
My brain feels smushy from reading this.
The main character's name is Raven.... She is sooo tragically emo, it's sad.... From her black lipstick to her black fingernails and combat boots, Pretty much everything about her drives me insane!!! Not becuase she is a black wearing goth, no, it's her character. She is stupid. And the way she is written, it acts like she is better than the "normal people." She is a goth snob. You know the type, you probably don't like the type.... and if you are that type, just don't act so above everyone else.

I really enjoyed this book. It was very funny and now I must read the next in this series.

This book is way too coincidental.
Allow me to discuss the irony, which Vampire Kisses has more than enough of (and this is still an understatement). The main character's (Raven) parents used to be what she called "hippies" when she was a kid. Now, if her parents were hippies, why would they name her kid "Raven?" Flower-loving lava-lamp-collecting Pink Floyd orange walls pink carpets hippies, would name their child Raven? I understand that I may be stereotyping the whole concept of being a 'hippie' here, but that is exactly what the characters, and, indirectly the author herself, are doing anyways — stereotyping. From 'hippies' to goths to vampires, et cetera.
And another thing about her name - isn't Raven a goth name? How in the world did those two "hippies" know that they were eventually going to raise a goth kid? Coincidental? I believe so.
On another account, Raven has no character whatsoever apart from being totally shallow and self-centered. Character development nor thought processes can be found here, which caused the reading experience to further decrease in enjoyment, and increase is disappointment.
Now to the part on vampires. This "gentlemen home-schooled" boy. The author portrays him as a vampire, no doubt about it. Okay. And? Where is the blood-sucking? The 'O woe is me, the light is burning me to ashes!' I may not be a major fan of Stephanie Meyer's Twilight, but at least that did have the thirst of blood pretty much running everywhere.
I personally do not recommend this book. To anyone. Unless you like the cliche kind of thing. I really don't know.

Simply terrible, just TERRIBLE.
SUPERFICIAL, STEREOTYPICAL, CLICHÉ. Plainly and excruciatingly bad, BAD, BAD.
The facts have no union; is like watching a bad TV series, a succession of changing scenes but with no explanations anywhere, and a bunch of systematized ideas and shallowness. An assortment of conventionalized and “popular” elements put together with the apparent intent of being cool and special but obviously failing miserably.
What a painful, painful read.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK, I repeat, I do not recommend this book, if you do read it BE WARNED you will never get back the hours you wasted.

It looks like it was written by a 10 years old girl who wrote a fanfiction while daydreaming about a handsome vampire as her boyfriend. Not my cup of tea.

I love the vampire kisses series because it was the first vampire love novel i read before twilight came out and i am able to relate to this book a howl lot. I would recomend people to read this book and the howl series granted it is not as long or as good as twilight but it is worth the read. This teenage girl falls in love with this teenage vampire and she tries to deny it for ahilw and she is curious to find out who he is and it has been her life long dream to become a vampire. She broke it to this old abandoned house when she was younger and she never did since that night. Until one night when she is going home from crashing a party she and her outcast friend almost hit a person. This person turned out to be the misteryous teen vampire who just so happened to move into the old abandoned house. This house turned out to be his relatives that died she gave it to him. He listens to heavy metal music and punk rock and things like that. he also watches movies. Unlike twilight he does need to sleep yes he does have a real bed but he also has his cauffin hiden behind a secret door cause he wishes he could be a human and the girl wishes she could be a vampire. But this is only a breifing of the first book if you want to know more i guess you are just going to have to read them and find out more about it. I hope any and all who read this do go and try to find these books and read them all. Vampire Kisses is a really great book. I found it to be very original and absolutely hilarious. There were parts where I just couldn't stop laughing because Vampire Kisses is a very very funny book.
Vampire Kisses was really interesting too. I found myself reading more and more and more of it and ended up finishing it because it's just a book that you want to keep reading.
Vampire Kisses was thoroughly enjoyable and I will forever remember parts of it.
I loved all of the characters, they were all really well-written and had their typical attributes. I really liked Raven, I had quite a soft-spot for her as she was caring and different and didn't care what anyone else thought of her.
Alexander was a great character too, he was such a cool vampire. He wasn't cocky or arrogant or anything like that. He was really shy which was quite cute.
This book had me laughing all the way through. I found the ending to be a sad one though.
Overall, I thought this book was excellent. I would recommend it to anyone who's a fan of vampires and anyone who just wants a good laugh, or even a light read that won't take long to devour.

This book is kind of like a salad when all you really want is a steak. You start to read it and you really, really want the two main characters to get together and thats all well and good. It would be a better book if the main character wouldn't whine so much and get over the whole damned "I'm goth and no one understands me" bullshit. It wouldn't be as bad as it is if the characters had actual depth, if the parents weren't as retarded and if the story had more meat.
There are other books following this one in a series, I do not recommend them and I will not be reading them.

I must admit that this is a guilty pleasure type of book. Its very simple with not much depth to it but is a cute book. Though it is not something to read for a life changing experience it is cute and easy to read and follow so give it a try.
Fall in love with Raven and her Vampire and follow them through all their terrifyingly wonderful adventures.
Though there is some originality to the book it comes in the form of non-original vampire myths and legends (garlic, crosses, sunlight etc.) so just enjoy it for what it is.

Someone hand me the forks.
I have no desire to be able to read after finishing Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber.
The main character is *goth* Raven *goth* Madison who *goth* is apparently a goth. In case you didn't get that from the author pointing that out every other page. She also pulls out every single cliche in the book, and ends almost every sentence in an exclamation point. People aren't called by the names that they are given, no, the snarky protagonist has to give them an insulting nickname for one of their qualities.
Anyway, she lives in this town called Dullsville (yet another horrible nickname!) and no one understands how bad her life is, how much she has to deal with, oh sob sob. Every character admires her, and she is somewhat of an idol to everyone who is fortunate enough be in her presence. All of this admiration, and her life is still sooooo miserable, and no one understands her. She has two ex-hippie parents, who have now apparently 'conformed' to society, and are khaki-wearing, tennis-racquet toting people who (like everyone else) don't understand what she's going through. She is constantly moaning about her brother, and how he gets more attention than she does, even though he is basically another cardboard cutout like her family, friends, and everyone except for her and her Knight of the *gags* Night. So, basically she just putters around with small incidents concerning Trevor the Impeccable. Then, the author finally decides to get to the point of the story, and introduces a "creepy guy" (we don't know his proper name until later, whiny Raven just dubs him this out of her own shallow understanding). Yada yada, more time passes, and then she decides to break into someone else's house to try and find vampires.
That's when the drama starts.
And by drama, I mean completely pointless and stupid writing about vampires. It is all utter sap- anyway, she meets Alexander (I'm omitting his last name because his full name is enough to make me vomit) who she thinks is a vampire. Of course, he is a perfect gentleman, and is yet another cardboard cutout who has no purpose in life other to love Raven. Anyway, after she breaks into his house like a mad person, he does the natural thing and invites her over for dinner (because that's what you do when people break into your house...right?). They proceed to be predictably head-over-heels for each other because they're both "goth" (eurrrghh) and that's about it. Then we realize that Raven is only using this poor puppet of a character so she can become a vampire herself and gain international fame by ratting him to the news. Because that's what true love is made of.

It is all utter sap- anyway, she meets Alexander (I'm omitting his last name because his full name is enough to make me vomit) who she thinks is a vampire. Of course, he is a perfect gentleman, and is yet another cardboard cutout who has no purpose in life other to love Raven. Anyway, after she breaks into his house like a mad person, he does the natural thing and invites her over for dinner (because that's what you do when people break into your house...right?). They proceed to be predictably head-over-heels for each other because they're both "goth" (eurrrghh) and that's about it. Then we realize that Raven is only using this poor puppet of a character so she can become a vampire herself and gain international fame by ratting him to the news. Because that's what true love is made of.

this book gave me nostalgia.
i remember when i was younger going through my goth phase (it's not a phase mom) and thinking how cool it was that the character Raven was goth like me and going through similar judgmentalness by our appearance.
also, how we longed to find our Gothic Prince. (i did but sadly he was taken 8...c)
this was a fun read and it was nice to visit this book again.

I read this back in high school and every time I see this cover I get nostalgic. I decided to pick this up since I was in a reading slump and to also see if I would still love it in my late 20’s. And I did!
Raven still made me laugh and is still one of my favorite main characters. She really didn’t care what other people thought about her or her interests.
For some reason, I remember this as a middle-grade book and that’s absolutely not true. I think most of the jokes went above my head back in the day because a lot of this had dark humor and older vibe to it. Some of the things happening (i.e. parties, and sexual themes) took me by surprise because I didn’t remember them.
This read like a 2000’s paranormal and I was living for it! Especially the romance between Raven and Alexander. I felt like a kid again grinning while reading the interactions between them.
This did help with my slump and also rekindled my love for this series. Maybe I’ll pick it back up soon.

Raven is gothic in a town where that's rather frowned upon and so she's rather lonely until a family moves into the wonderful mansion. Things move fast in this novel and I like that. Nothing is ever boring and Raven is as funny as can be. I love Alexander and his shy and quiet way. This book can be kind of cheesy but I just think it's cute as can be. This novel is kinda of what I wish my town was like, everyone is pretty good people with only a few bad apples instead of the other way around. I'd love to hand out with Raven as she'd be so much fun, I'd probably end up in some kind of trouble but still, she'd never be boring.
This is very short book, I read it once in less than two hours. It's written easy to understand and in a way that allows you to read this book even faster. It's a simple feel good book. You'll come away with a smile after this one.

This is the third book by her that I've read, and she has a very light, ditzy kind of style of writing. Or maybe it's just her main characters, I don't know. Raven is a total perky goth. Like, seriously. She's very perky, it would be very annoying if I didn't like perky goths, so I'm warning you in advance. But here again, vampire romance. It was actually pretty cute, and there's also totally something going on with this other guy that does not get fully developed, but hey, there's 2 more books now, so maybe something will happen.

This book was for teeny boppy girls who are hopeless romantics and fantasize an Edward Cullen will someday come to get them. I was sick and couldn't move from my bed, hence settled for reading this whole series as it was the only one available in my mobile. Otherwise I swear to god, I'd not have read this shit in a million years.

Me gusta lo mismo la portada que el interior, nada
Va de una niña bastante mimada que ya a los 11 años se pintaba las uñas y los labios de negro y era fan acérrima de Anne Rice, y ya con 16 es todo un personaje.
Es un libro para chicas de 11 años escrito con un pavo increíble que no hace ni gracia, me ponía mas nerviosa que otra cosa. Ni que fuera escrito por una adolescente, si fuera así el caso seguro que tiene menos pavo.

This is the hottest garbage I have ever consumed. I would rather read bad fanfiction than consume this ever again. I hated every part of this except that it’s about vampires. I expected the cringe (it just matches those early 2000 vampire vibes) but honestly this was the worse cringe imaginable. The story feels like an unedited bad fanfiction….
I read this years ago, in my tween vampire goth era, and used to love it. I literally don’t even know who I was back then after trying to read this as an adult.

A perfect teen-read for Halloween.
Raven, a 16 year old goth, loves vampires and wishes to meet one. Her greatest desire comes to reality when 17 year old Alexander moves to the creepy mansion up the hill. He is so mysterious that he never gets out of his place, he paints the whole time and he is home-schooled.
Lovely like "The little vampire" and so small that is read in a couple of hours pleasantly!

I had a feeling I would enjoy this book, because I love all things vampire. I've always wanted to be a vampire. It had a great cliffhanger too so I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

This book sucked. And not in the good way either.
So the main characters name is raven and she is goth. Tragically so what with her black combat boots, black lipstick, black hair. But at the saaaaame time she is a total freaking preppy girl. She argues with the hottest guy in school and she works at this travel place and at she seems completely fine with wearing bright red lipstick and a pretty red dress.
Wait whaaaaT? I thought she was goth.
Apparently she doesn't even know what goth is.
Then she befriends this middle aged lady who dresses all in white alllllllll the time. I mean seriously? I will admit there was that one good part wih that smoggy rich guy(i can't remember his name) and she like steals his clothes and leaves him outside naked. But that was it. Aaaaaaaand we don't even get to know that alexander is a real vamp until the absolute last page. I though the book was called vampire kisses..... They kissed once.
I started reading the second book to his series to see if hrs author had changed or if the characters had changed. But no. This series still sucks.

Second time reading
I can tell that the first time I read this I was a young teen because I remember loving this and thinking Raven and Alexander were so cool. Now that I'm older, Raven is somewhat irritating and I want to tell her to grow up. I do like that she defends Becky and doesn't let Trevor just bully her without fighting back. Alexander is cute and treats Raven well. I was glad that Raven had some growth by the end and I do want to keep reading to see how the series turns out.
