Book 3 of The Chained Adept

CHAINS WITHOUT WIZARDS AND A RISING COUNT OF THE DEAD

The largest city in the world has just discovered its missing wizards. It seems the Kigali empire has ignited a panic that threatens internal ruin and the only chained wizard it knows that’s still alive is Penrys.

The living wizards and the dead are not her people, not unless she makes them so. All they have in common is a heavy chain and a dead past — the lives that were stolen from them are beyond recall.

What remains are unanswered questions about who made them this way. And why. And what Penrys plans to do to find out.

Karen Myers is a fantasy and science fiction author, best known for her heroic fantasy novels.

After a degree in Comparative Mythology from Yale University and a career as an industry pioneer building software companies, she has devoted herself to writing speculative fiction. Her stories feature heroes in real and imagined worlds filled with magic, space travel, and adventure.

When she’s not writing, she enjoys hunting, fishing, photography, and playing her fiddle.

Karen lives with her husband, dogs, and cats in an old log cabin in the mountains of central Pennsylvania, surrounded by wildlife. Bears, coyotes, deer, and possums visit often, and when she fiddles on her porch, the wild turkeys talk back.

The third entry in the series is about politics and secret societies.

What happens when your society thinks it never had wizards while everyone else has. Of course, you're proven wrong, thanks to the arrival of chained wizards hiding in the middle of your people.

It's about a cautionary tale on what you expect, the politics of imperial china (or a fac-simile of), and an exposition of more of the chained wizards (of course, once you start getting them popping out of the woodwork everywhere, that meant there's in fact "lots" of them). It also offers us a bite of the mystery behind the chained wizards.

The reason why this gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that the insecurities of the main character are starting to intrude a bit into the story. It's all very logical... and not very appreciated (at least by me). But overall, it remains close to 5 stars. Just... not enough.

This was an interesting read... it felt really organic. I love the straight fantasy genre as a rule so this title snagged my eye. It was very nicely done... likeable characters, interesting magical premise... nice setup for the next book! I'm into it.
