Husbands and Other Sharp Objects

Rate this book
A heartwarming, hilarious novel for anyone who has ever had a family, from the author of Lift and Separate.

After a lifetime of marriage, Marcy Hammer is ready to get herself unhitched—just as everyone else in her life is looking for a commitment. Her new boyfriend, Jon, wants to get serious, and her soon-to-be ex-husband, Harvey, is desperate to get back together. When her headstrong daughter announces a secret engagement to Harvey’s attorney, Marcy finds herself planning her daughter’s wedding as she plans her own divorce.

Now with two huge events on the horizon, the indomitable Marcy soon realizes that there’s nothing like a wedding to bring out the worst in everybody. From petty skirmishes over an ever-growing guest list to awkward confrontations with her sticky-fingered new in-laws, pulling off the wedding is going to be a challenge; seeing her divorce through is going to be a trial. And trying to make everyone happy might prove to be impossible—because in the end, Marcy alone must make a choice between something old and something new.

If you are looking for a chuckle... 😊

Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is the follow-up to Lift and Separate, the zany and endearing story of Marcy Hammer when she finds out her husband is cheating on her. That said, Husbands and Other Sharp Objects can completely stand on its own.

Marcy Hammer has been married to Harvey for most of her adult life. They are now separated due to his cheating, and Marcy has a boyfriend, Jon. Harvey decides he wants her back at the same time Jon decides he wants to settle down with Marcy. And on top of it all, Marcy’s daughter announces her engagement, and Marcy has a wedding to plan with an impending divorce also on her calendar.

Instead of the wedding bringing out the best in others, it brings out their claws. Marcy has her hands full with that while also trying to move her divorce forward. Ultimately, Marcy will decide her own fate and how (and with whom) she will move forward.

Marilyn Simon Rothstein has a way of handling serious topics with heart and candor balanced with fun. The dialogue is witty and smart, and the writing is smooth. There’s something lovable and completely relatable about Marcy- she really could be anyone’s mom, and it’s admirable how she shares her trials with us, as she grows into a new stage in her life.

Overall, Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is a fun, funny, and entertaining read that leaves Marcy’s story on a high note. I’m so grateful we heard from her again.

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

A hilarious story full of humor and heart!

This book was just straight up fun! A fun heart warming story guaranteed to make you laugh out loud! All families are dysfunctional, some families are more dysfunctional than others... I loved how this book just laid everything out there on the table.... it reminded me of those days when everything is going wrong so you just have to laugh!

Marcy was a fabulous character who I have a lot in common with... I am divorced, have three kids, and have two close friends that help me get through it all! What I don’t have is a John, although I don’t think I’m ready for that, but he was a really nice guy! So this is the second book featuring Marcy, in the first book her husband cheats on her and she kicks him to the curb, however it can absolutely be read as a standalone... in this book marcy, has moved on... her new boyfriend John wants to take their relationship to a more serious level, her soon to be ex cheating husband Harvey wants her back, and her daughter Amanda is getting married... I love the juxtaposition of the wedding and the divorce... I also love how this book accurately portrayed how insane people can act when planning a wedding...

This book was crammed full of little gems this was my absolute favorite is bread still considered white after it has been toasted? that line still makes me chuckle! Just a wonderful book all about life, love, family, good times, bad times, something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue... marcy is just a tremendously relatable character she could be you, she could be your mom, your sister, your BFF, she is someone you are glad you got to spend some time with!

A story that reminds you no matter how messy life gets never lose sight of your sense of humor!

*** many thanks to Lake Union for my copy of this book *** Recommend as a guaranteed pick me up!

Marcy is trying her best to swim the rough seas of helping plan her daughter Amanda's wedding, whilst trying to get along with Harvey ( her husband from whom she is separated), for the sake of Amanda's big day. She is having to deal with the aftermath of her failed marriage whilst also having hopes and dreams for her daughter's new marriage...something old, something new.

After 30 years of being married to Harvey and raising Elizabeth, Amanda and Ben, Marcy is now learning to become an independent woman, after she discovered Harvey was having a baby with one of his 32D cup size models. She has moved on with Jon, one of the nicest and sweetest characters in the book. He is patient with her as she struggles with how to introduce him to her children, but also has his limits with how long he'll stay on the side lines.

Added to the equation are Marcy's friends, Dana and Candy, her wonderful support system through all the drama in her life. Together with Jon, Marcy considers them as her extended family.

The array of quirky and colourful characters, even Marcy's dead mother, all add something special to this story. Adding in a lot of witt, sarcasm and laugh out loud humour, takes this book up another notch.

All in all, a fun, entertaining, humour filled book with a feel good ending, I was glad I got the opportunity to read this book.

Note: This is my first book by Marilyn Simon Rothstein. I discovered this is her second book pertaining to Marcy and her family. However, the author did a great job of telling the story as a stand alone book.

Many thanks to Netgalley, Lake Union Publishing and the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

4.5/5 (rounded up)

Husbands and Other Sharp Objects by Marilyn Simon Rothstein was such a delightful read, and I am kicking myself for not picking it up sooner. It was very humorous and made me laugh out loud multiple times, but there are also some very emotional moments as well. Marcy is our MC and the only viewpoint in the book which in my opinion, was a perfect choice. I loved her spunk and determination, and I especially loved how she handled her divorce and her daughter's engagement announcement! There is some great family drama as well as a touch of romance thanks to Marcy's new special friend, Jon. I hadn't realized that Rothstein's debut Lift and Separate is about this SAME family, so now I will definitely need to go back to that one as well. This was great as a standalone though and I think the author did an exceptional job of making sure it didn't feel like we were missing anything.

I chose to listen to the audiobook, and I thought the narrator Pamela Almand was a perfect fit for Marcy. Marcy is an older character which I loved, and Almand sounded the way I would expect Marcy to sound in real life. I had no issues with her narration, and I would highly recommend checking out the audiobook. I found it pretty hilarious that Harvey is the owner of a brassiere empire (not my words), and there were a couple of especially funny moments thanks to that. I loved the way Rothstein tackled the heavier topics as well, and Husbands and Other Sharp Objects even made me tear up a bit at times. This is my second time reading this author, and I am definitely a full-blown fan at this point. So, who should read this? If you enjoy romance and family drama all rolled into one funny, touching, and slightly silly story, this is for you.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

*** Note: I received e-arc of this book via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to publisher, author and NetGalley.***

What can be a better day to review this book other than women’s day? Blurb says it all. This story was about a woman who grows in a real sense almost at the end of her middle age by getting control of your own life, being independent after almost 30 years of marriage, and coming out of ex-husband’s shadow. It’s about her life, family, love, and friendship.

I’m going in little detail with the characters as it is hard to talk about book without characters and I loved them all. So let’s meet Marcy Hammer and character who were very important in her life.

Characters-
Marcy– is such a good hearted protagonist. I so loved her throughout the story. She had come to terms with fact that her husband cheated on her but still she was struggling with her after effects of her separation. She loved her kids so much that foe them she kept contact with her ex-husband who was taking it in other way and wanted to be back together. I loved the way she handled her family even after everything that happened to her. She perfectly compartmentalized her love life, family and job, was doing great until her daughter announces the big day and all the side characters wanted to cross the boundaries of their assigned compartments. Keep everyone happy was her nature but in doing so she was putting her own happiness on the edge of the cliff and nobody cared about it specifically Amanda. She wanted Amanda happy on her day and for that she was ready to do anything which was so admirable.

Harvey was okay. I didn’t like him. He was selfish person who care more about his business than anything. His demand of getting back with Marcy was ridiculous. I still wonder why he didn’t file divorce! When they separated, he made it very clear that he didn’t wanted to be married. But I liked that he kept helping Marcy with the bills and supported Marcy with their kids.

Most noticeable trio of the book was Amanda’s three children. Elizabeth– doctor less social but great daughter and sister. I loved her more because she understood Marcy more than Amanda. Amanda was epitome of bridezilla. She made everyone’s life hell since her announcement of engagement till the day of marriage. Everyone was going along with her incessant insane childish behavior as it was about her big day especially Marcy. I didn’t like her a bit. She was so selfish and kept blaming Marcy for everything that gone wrong. But I never expected what she did in climax. It was surprisingly good. Her love for her father was tremendous. Ben– Studying law. He was gay, cute, and Marcy’s most supporting son. I even liked his partner Jordan.

Jon- Marcy’s boyfriend, was a nice guy. He and Marcy made a great couple in the book. She was really happy with him. But I also didn’t like the way he kept pushing her on becoming part of her family and then making life decision without even asking her. That was shocking.

Dana and Candy– her girlfriends were her lifeboat. They supported her lot when she was emotionally sinking. They gave this book extra charm. Together with Marcy they made another trio that was so amazingly strong, funny, and sarcastic.

Pheww!! I had to mention them all as they played such important role in Marcy’s life. They were so close to her and I can say I came to know them as equally as I knew Marcy in the book. No one was perfect, they had their imperfections and that is what made them realistic and this book perfect. All were just great and hilarious.

What I liked-
Warning– there is so much food in this book. Almost all chapter started with description of restaurants or had a scene where character is eating food and talking food. All laughter and food talk going to make you lot hungry. Do not read it on an empty stomach.

As the tag line of the book says, this book was so so heartwarming and hilarious and those who have family or ever had can enjoy it even more. Book was narrated by main character, Marcy. Author made her voice very strong that it was hard not to feel Marcy. Her life events were written in smooth flow telling everything that reader need to know about this incredible character like, how she separated from Harvey and how it impacted her life; her life before, during and after marriage; her relationship with her kids, mother, friends and Jon; what she wanted in her life, sacrifices she made and how she felt about that. It was so wonderful to know this character.

She might look weak at some point as I can see she was hesitant with taking control of her life and also in making life decisions, she wasn’t even defending herself when other characters pushed her or blamed her for something in fear of hurting them. Ha! She didn’t even file divorce. But she was not weak, she was strong in her own way and I loved the changes in her by the end of the book. Her monologues and dialogues were remarkably witty, I loved her mental talk with her mother. I can’t tell you how much I laughed in the book. The funniest moments were when Marcy met Amanda’s in-laws, Dana’s daughter-in-law, and her own mother-in-law. Basically in-laws were real pain, but funny side of characters made those moments mind-blowing. Even the serious moments were narrated in humorous way.

There were not big surprises or twist in the story until climax. I could see all the turns coming in the book but the climax was surprising. I didn’t see it coming. Book had a feel good end.

This story was so good that I wanted to keep reading it. It’s a kind of book that I will read again when I’m of character’s age or more and die laughing. I will keep this book in my retirement shelf, it will be so good to read it at that time. I hope my husband buy paperback by that time or I have to use Sharp Objects to make it early. 😉

Overall, it was refreshing, hilarious, entertaining, dramatic, fast paced, clean romance, and relatable relationships with quirky and witty characters. Pinch of everything that made the book most enjoyable. I recommend this book to readers of all age.

I absolutely loved this. Marcy Hammer is such an unlikely heroine and following her story has really been a joy. When I requested an advance copy of this book, I didn't realize it was a sequel to Lift and Separate, which I had not yet read. Last week, I scrambled to read the first (as I'm one of those people who refuses to read anything out of order, even if it's not 100% necessary) and I found myself really enjoying the story. Lift and Separate was a 4 star read for me, however, this one stole my heart. In Lift, Marcy finds out her husband of 30+ years has had an affair and gotten a 20-something lingerie model pregnant. This story is more about moving on with her life, rather than wondering what to do about her marriage, which I found very enjoyable. I love Marcy and her family and friends and I really hope to see more from Rothstein in the future.

I received an advanced copy from the Great Thoughts' Ninja Review Team. All opinions are my own.

Humor with a heart! There were times I laughed out loud and other moments that were poignant and endearing. Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is a wonderful story about families, friendships, and starting over. Marcy is separated from her husband of 33 years, starting a new job and a new relationship, much to the chagrin of her adult children and her husband. It was fun watching Marcy navigate this new life with all of its challenges that include planning her daughter’s wedding, planning her own divorce, and gaining a new independence. This book is highly entertaining, full of love and hope.

Marcy Hammer has just separated from her husband, Harvey, and after decades of putting her family first, she's ready to take back her life. But a series of comedic life events get in the way. Her daughter announces she's getting married and turns into a Bridezilla. Her best friend has a health scare. Despite trying to put her lift first, she continues to take care of everyone else with a witty, breezy, personality.

If you're looking for a light, fun, heartfelt read that will make you laugh out loud - look no further!

I am still laughing at what is such a cleverly written novel about Marcy who is seeking a divorce from her husband Harvey. Full of fun, absolute crazy making situations involve Amanda the daughter who is marrying Jake and wants the wedding of her dreams on her own terms much to her parents shock that she is not following her heritage and traditions. Not to mention that Marcy is dating Jon when all Harvey seems to want is to mend their marriage and start over....never mine his disgrace. After all family sticks together. There is lots of drama at the root of this family dysfunction that makes you squirm, yet cheer for the smarts and fortitude of Marcy. There are biting squabbles between Amanda and her sister Elisabeth, their brother Ben and his situation, then the future mother-in-law and her shocking behavior add to the outright hilarious scenes - this entertaining heartwarming book would make an amazing movie. I haven't read this author's first novel but really want to! I loved this book.

Loved this book and all its characters! It was a fast read, and you could laugh with the protagonist and see yourself in the same situations with far less equanimity!

The reason I read it is because I was asked by Brilliance Audio to narrate it (it is coming out in audio in March, I believe, and you can pre-order!) I had so much fun with this warm and funny escapade about endings and beginnings! Hope readers will try the audiobook, too!

Another winner from Marilyn Simon Rothstein. Her writing style feels like she's talking directly to the reader. I rooted for Marcy, wanted to strangle her youngest daughter, and chuckled out loud on numerous occasions. This is a great read for anyone - married, single, old, young, and everything in between. I can't wait to read more from this author!

This book is a true gem that had me laughing out loud from start to finish, despite covering the topics of: divorce, cancer, infidelity, sticky fingered in-laws, sibling rivalry, and the oh-so-fun task of wedding planning (to be fair- we could just call it wedding compromising).

Rothstein writes with a fresh voice that is colorful and in no way overdone. She beautifully captures both the authentic family dynamic of a separated couple and their three kids, and also the quirkiness and loyalty of female friendships. It was the perfect combination of dysfunction and fun.

I did not realize this was the sequel to “Lift and Separate”, which I ordered after finishing chapter 1, and full disclosure: I’m extremely OCD about reading books in order and watching tv series from the pilot onwards (this drives my husband nuts). Many reviewers felt this read well as a standalone and I agree. I look forward to reading book #1 and attempting to forget that I am reading out of order! 

For a Kindle Unlimited book, this was one I really enjoyed! Sadly I still think of authors that self-publish as a little 'less'.

I found myself laughing, wondering why Marcy allowed herself to be such a door-mat, why her daughter became such a Bridezilla and why did her husband want her back so much, why did her 'boyfriend' want her to hook up so badly?

I just found myself not caring enough about this little over-done plot twists and just found myself enjoying just enjoying the story, the characters, and the really odd humor.

I wish I had known that there was a book before this one that told us the story of Marcy's break-up...ah well that one is also free for Kindle Unlimited so I'm on it!

I loved HUSBANDS AND OTHER SHARP OBJECTS. Turns out the sharpest object in the author’s tool box is her ever clever wit, which made this family dramedy a stitch-a-minute.

I admired MC Marcy Hammer’s gutsy spirit as she deals with her soon-to-be-ex husband, who left her for a young woman he got pregnant. Then her daughter announces her engagement to her dad’s divorce lawyer. Oy vey!

I felt all the feels of this one, even while the story kept me laughing, I was moved by the author deft handling of serious issues. And I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough because I came to care about Marcy, her grown children, and her new beau Jon. Oh how I wanted all to end well!

A must-read for lovers of hilarious dramedies and beach reads with substance.

My Review of “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects” by Marilyn Simon Rothstein

OMG!! WOW!! Kudos to Marilyn Simon Rothstein , Author of “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects” for such a witty, humorous, heartwarming, entertaining and wonderful story. I had my inhaler on hand, since I have found that Marilyn Simon Rothstein in my humble opinion is the “Queen of Humor” I laughed so much that I cried, and did have to use my inhaler. “Husbands and Other Sharp Objects” is the book that follows “Lift and Separate”, also by Marilyn Simon Rothstein. This can be read as a stand alone, but both books are just so enjoyable. The Genres for this book are Fiction, Women’s Fiction and Humor.

Marilyn Simon Rothstein describes her colorful cast of characters as complex, complicated, quirky, dysfunctional, and mostly likable. There are some character that are a few cards short of a deck, and that makes this story more delicious. I love the way Marilyn weaves the storyline and the characters together.

The question is to commit or not commit. Marcy Hammer is now separated from her husband Harvey, the head of a global brassiere company. Harvey is now expanding into men’s briefs, and business looks really good. Harvey is really apologetic and sorry for his past mistakes, and wants Marcy back. Marcy is content in a new job, and even has a boyfriend that really makes her happy. Jon, would like more of a commitment, but Marcy is not divorced yet. Marcy has some wonderful friends that offer emotional support.

So everything is going well in Marcy’s life? What more could you ask for? It seems Marcy’s youngest daughter Amanda is getting engaged to Harvey’s attorney. Amanda’s future mother in law has some annoying issues. Suddenly Amanda has turned into “Bridezilla” and the wedding planning and choices are getting stranger. This event looks like it will be “The Wedding from Hell”, if Amanda’s older sister and brother are still speaking to her.

I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of family, friendship, friends, loyalty, love and hope. I would highly recommend this charming, delightful, humorous novel for those readers that enjoy Women’s Fiction and Humor. I received an Advanced Reading Copy of this novel from NetGalley for my honest review.

I gave this book two stars because three stars on goodreads means "I liked it" and I simply could not bring myself to say I did. I can't deny that "Husbands and Other Sharp Objects" is a finely written representative of its genre (Which genre would it be? An undemanding feel-good read for middle-class american females?), but it appears I don't like the genre. This review is my personal impression of the book. If you loved it, good for you.

This book is HILARIOUS! 4.5 LOL STARS!!

Some favorites....
••• "Is bread still considered white once toasted?"

••• "I hate the term “baby lettuce.” Worse is “Boston baby lettuce.” It’s not bad enough you’re eating the baby. You have to know where it comes from."

••• "People I knew hardly ever called on the landline anymore, which was good because I liked to keep that phone open for insurance types who mispronounced my name and financial advisors hawking upside-down mortgages."

And those are literally from just the first 10% of the book!

I LOL'd from beginning to end. If you need some humor in your life, please do yourself a favor and get this book! You won't regret it.. I chuckled, I guffawed, I made all the silly noises that describe laughter. But get this - there is divorce, infidelity, cancer, family issues, heart attacks... and I still made all those silly noises!! Never have I laughed out loud so much from a book.

Marcy Hammer is done with her marriage. Despite a lifetime of memories, three adult kids and a pretty comfortable life, it's inexcusable what Harvey has done. She's got a new man in her life, but Harvey will not let her go. She's determined to get him to file, and move forward with the divorce. But while her own marriage is ending, her daughter Amanda gets engaged, and her marriage is just beginning.

The wedding planning is the bulk of the story - and it is hysterically insane. From beginning to end between thieving in-laws, silly traditions, and just having her kids meet Jon her new boyfriend, nothing is simple, everything involves some sort of challenge or confrontation - but Marcy takes it all in stride - doing her best as a mom, a friend, a partner - and her sense of humor truly shines in this book!

I loved Marcy, she is witty and feisty, and her family is just as dysfunctional as you'd want in a great book. The writing is sharp and quick, and I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish.

Woman (Marcy) helps plan her daughter (Amanda's) wedding... while also divorcing her husband (Harvey). How will Marcy handle the end of her marriage just as her daughter's is beginning?

After decades of raising three kids (Elisabeth, Amanda, and Ben) together, Marcy and Harvey have recently separated after Harvey had an affair with a young model. Oh, and she's having his baby, too. Luckily, Marcy has moved on as well and has the sweetest, most caring and thoughtful boyfriend (full grown man friend??) ever, Jon, who is an artist. Can you say #BookBoyfriend??

With a little help from her friends, Dana and Candy, Marcy will help plan her daughter's wedding (but without voicing her opinion too often and annoying Amanda, who has turned into a Bridezilla), continue to date Jon, and decide whether or not to forgive Harvey (who has had a change of heart and wants her back).

Deliciously witty and sarcastic, this would make a great beach read!

Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for a free advance copy of this book! All opinions are my own.

Ever feel like you would love to be friends with an author and her characters after reading their book? I would be happy to share pizza and ice cream with Marilyn Simon Rothstein and the lovable Marcy Hammer! I thoroughly enjoyed the beginning of Marcy's story in Lift and Separate and book 2 did not disappoint where Marcy Hammer, Queen (soon to be ex) to the King of Brassiere's and Bosoms, begins to navigate her new life as a single woman and mother to 3 grown children. New friends and old, love gained and love lost, weddings and babies, this book has it all! I adored Marcy's strength, her humor, and grit in the face of some of life's toughest situations. Husbands and Other Sharp Objects is hilariously realistic where even the cheating, soon to be -EX husband, is likeable!
* This book is better having read Lift and Separate first but I think it could be enjoyable as a stand alone as well.

A laugh out loud funny, witty read that gives true insight into what it means to be a family - even if it's a dysfunctional one!

Marcy Hammer, is newly separated from her husband, Harvey, of 20 plus years. Harvey realizes his mistake and wants forgiveness; Marcy believes Harvey "is so damn nuts, he shouldn't be allowed within ten feet of a child with an allergy!"

In the book Marcy tries to find her way in the new world of singledom with the aid of her trusty sidekicks - her friends, Candy and Dana. Oh, and did I mention Marcy isn't technically single, thanks to her new arm-candy, Jon. As the book progresses, Marcy realizes quickly through the adventure of finding herself and the chaos of her daughter's upcoming wedding that, "the grass is not always greener. In fact, sometimes it's brown."

A light, hilarious tale that gets 5 stars from this gal!❤️

If you like stories featuring female relationships, family relationships, mild drama, or wedding planning Bridezillas than this book is for you! I was immediately engrossed into the world of Marcy Hammer, her three grown children, her two best friends, her cheating husband and her new boyfriend. I can honestly say that I loved this book from cover to cover, and found myself easily connecting with the main character more as the story progressed. A truly enjoyable read.

After doing some research on the author I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this is the sequel to another book about Marcy Hammer called Lift and Separate. I will DEFINITELY be adding it on my immediate TBR.

My husband died while I was reading this, I might have had a slightly different experience with this book if I had read it at another time. It might have been the timing but the humor didn't hit my funny bone.

This was just okay I guess in the sense that I really expected so much more from the book but it fell short for me with respect to certain aspects. First of all, Marcy as an MC was an absolute delight at times but when it came to her children, I often felt as if she loses her self respect and self worth. Amanda especially is so overbearing at times. I did not like the chapters with her wedding preparations at all. The fight Marcy has with Jon because of Amanda's insistence on not having Jon at the wedding could have been handled maturely. I also had a bit of a problem with the ending, I would have liked if Marcy and Jon tried out long distance and survived rather than Marcy leaving everything behind.
