Women showed up when suffrage was discussed, and there was always cursory attention paid to Queen Elizabeth, Rosa Parks, Hellen Keller—all amazing women, but if I wanted to learn about nonwhite, nonwestern, not straight women, or any women beyond that token handful, I had to take a specialized course, the curriculum of which was usually overwhelmingly white, straight, cisgender, non-disabled women.Story Time: when I was younger and first heard about Queen Elizabeth, I was pretty impressed. But I didn’t really grow up hearing about her. I grew up hearing about Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and Razia Sultana of the Delhi Sultanate. Those women were my role models, enough that I wanted to learn to ride horses (never actually did, though).
