Private Investigator Jack Fox will sweet-talk the Devil on a Sunday and kiss the Pope on a Monday — whatever it takes to get to the truth. Between his newest case involving the brutal murder of a Russian mail order bride, his 17-year-old daughter who is the poster child for anger non-management issues, and his ex-girlfriend-from-hell who is giving him an ultimatum that threatens to end in murder, Jack is pushed past his limits as he tries to keep his sanity — and catch a killer!
A fast, fun detective story served up with wit, grit and shocking twists. C. Mack Lewis offers up a murder mystery with a father-daughter relationship that careens from bad to worse and some unexpected places in between. High stakes thrills and drama!
I was born in South Jersey, the land of Silk City diners, nuclear plants, cornfields, and the Jersey Devil. My youth was spent reading voraciously, everything from Trixie Belden's (in the vain hope that Jim would slip Trixie the tongue) to my Aunt Mary Ellen's steamy bodice-ripping novels to anything in the stack of books my dad brought home from the library every Saturday, which got me hooked on the novels of Robert Ludlum and Donald E. Westlake. After earning a degree in Marketing at Auburn University, I spent the next five years in the business world, which is a polite way of saying that I had eleven jobs in a five year period, including door to door sales, skip tracing people who didn't want to be found, repossessing cars and collecting on defaulted student loans. During this five-year period, I did an in-depth study of abnormal psychology and sociopathic behavior - and then I divorced him. I didn't have enough money for therapy, so I decided to go to medical school where I earned a degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine. That kept me occupied for the first two years and then I had what I refer to as a 'walking nervous breakdown'. The school psychologist, Terry Murphy (thank you!) helped put me back together and I finished the last two years with weekly therapy and a healthy dose of legal pharmaceuticals. My two-year surgical residency in Buffalo, New York introduced me to a new world of human behavior, including junkies, addicts, criminals, punks, S&M beauty queens, and angry housewives with ice picks. Upon graduation, I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where I moved into my parent's guestroom (my standard of living sky-rocketed!) and I took a loan to open a private practice so I could (finally!) be my own boss. I've been in practice since 2000 and I've made Phoenix magazine's 'Top Doc' list in 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2016. I am passionate about podiatry and helping people who suffer from foot pain. I write the blog 'Podiatry Shoe Review', which is dedicated to helping people find good-looking shoes that are good for their feet and are pathology specific. With the money from my loan to start the practice, I hired and an old-fashioned matchmaker to find me a decent man with a career. She did find me a lovely man whom I dated for a year and a half - and then I met my husband, whom I adore. I love being a podiatrist and I am not ready to quit my day gig to become a full-time writer - mostly because I think I would go bat-shit crazy without the grounding (and humbling) force of dealing with the complex, subtle and fascinating world of feet. No, I do not have a foot fetish, but one does become fond of feet when they start paying for your mortgage and vacations. My screenplay OH BROTHER won the Phoenix Film Festival screenwriting competition in 2005 and was optioned by Gold Circle Films in 2008. I'm the author of THE FALLEN ANGELS TRILOGY, which is a fast, fun detective series served up with wit, grit, and more than a few shocking twists. The Trilogy features a private detective father and his daughter who is riddled with anger management issues and has a penchant for finding trouble. This is one father-daughter relationship that careens from bad to worse and some unexpected places in between. I am the host of The Hidden Gems Podcast, which features the best short stories you've never heard. I hope you enjoy my stories! They were born from my passion for storytelling and my demented sense of what constitutes a grand ole time.
Having read the first in this series, GUNNING FOR ANGELS, and absolutely loving it, I could not wait to read this second story. I am so not disappointed. This one is as fun, entertaining, and irreverent as the first.
Jack Fox, a Private Investigator, has a sense of humor about everything ... even murder. Throw in a teenage daughter that he never knew he had until she showed up on his doorstep, and it becomes an explosive relationship as they each struggle with the other.
Enid, his daughter, definitely needing some anger management classes, and constantly finding herself in hot water and Jack's ex-girlfriend.. the one he says is from hell ... are driving him crazy ... and he's got a murder to solve.
Jails, cops, detectives, teenage girls, mortuaries and a large cast of human vermin keep you highly entertained as he romps through Phoenix.
This is a well written crime fiction with outstanding characters that I haven't seen elsewhere. I'm really looking forward to seeing what's ahead for Jack and Enid.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
My original Black Market Angels audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer. Following Gunning For Angels, private investigator Jack Fox is back in this second installment in the Fallen Angels mystery series. If you haven’t listened to the previous book, there is enough information here to get new listeners caught up, but for a deeper understanding of the characters’ relationships, and simply because it was so much fun, I’d suggest listening to Gunning For Angels first.
In Black Market Angels, Jack is trying hard to become a better Dad to seventeen-year-old Enid, but Enid has a way of attracting trouble and her anger issues are by no means under control yet. Throw in a life-altering issue with his incarcerated ex-girlfriend, his current case of a missing Russian bride, and Jack has his work cut out for him. True to form, he takes everything that’s thrown at him with the necessary pinch of humor and ready wit. Favorite characters from the previous book, such as detective Bud Orlean with his marital and health problems, are back, and new characters are introduced. I loved the addition of Enid’s new school friends.
This is a brilliant follow-up to the first book. The plot hooks you from the beginning and the suspense and mayhem just keeps building and increasing. C. Mack Lewis takes great care with the descriptions of the Arizona setting and ensures all characters are fleshed out to make the story come fully to life. Told from multiple perspectives, it is easy to follow and thoroughly and originally plotted. Yes, there’s a lot of drama, and some over-the-top action/developments but it is all so much fun to follow and the characters are incredibly entertaining, it’s impossible to not become fully engaged in it all. The growing relationship between a fairly new, hesitant father and his troubled teenage daughter who become embroiled in some dangerously dark crimes makes this series unique.
Fortunately, John Bell is also narrating this second book. His character voices are distinctive and underline each character’s personality perfectly. His style of narration fits this type of story flawlessly. I’m already looking forward to the release of the third book. There were no issues with the production of the audiobook.
I would highly recommend this to anybody who enjoys well crafted, fast-paced crime fiction with plenty of wit and drama. Audiobook provided for review by the audiobookreviewer.com
The first two books of this series are a wild ride. There are new twists at every turn. Some good surprises and some that leave an open line that could go in any direction, including more pain and bad news. Looking forward to what comes next as the current peace does not look like happy ever after.
What a ride! This author knows how to spin a yarn. The characters were all dynamic. The plot was captivating and very much like a rollercoaster. The bad guys were such bastards that I was looking for a pitchfork.
I really dug this book. The twists and turns kept me up late(Just one more page!) The way each chapter was from a character's point of view was excellent. I look forward to the next one!
This reads like a TV movie. Not necessarily bad but not great either. It has served the general purpose of passing time and polishing my English, little else..
I enjoyed this book. A lot of times a book that is part of a series lacks depth if you have not read the previous books. That is not the case for this one. Giveaway win
