Updated Review 6/26/24: Another wonderful volume!!

I remember loving this one the first time I read it, and definitely feel the same way now!

It's hard to pinpoint as to WHY, but I think it's a few things? One of those is Hotaru being very intuitive about Hananoi and what he could be feeling. I admire how she really wants Hananoi to make friends, but realizes how hard it seems to be for him in the process. She is so thoughtful and is doing her best to stand by his side. <3

That backstory in the beginning was heartbreaking! Not sure what else to say about it without going into spoilers, so I will say that Kei-kun really is the MVP! I love his character so much and how he too seems rather intuitive. I truly hope he and Hananoi become great friends one day! <3

Original Review 2/4/24: "There's no such thing as a person who's got no right to love."

We finally got THE backstory from Hananoi's point-of-view and it was so emotionally moving! My heart broke for our very adorable little Hananoi and how much he was hurting because he didn't do anything. I'm thankful that through all that pain, he had the older guy with him to comfort him and encourage him. It's definitely not your typical friendship, but it's one I'm so thankful Hananoi had because it's obvious that man had a huge impact on his life and continues to have an effect on him.

I am LOVING seeing Hotaru grow as a character, specifically as a girlfriend! I think she is much more aware of Hananoi and what he is or isn't saying compared to just a few volumes ago. Also how she is starting to say that she too wants to touch Hananoi and wants to grow with him made me a proud momma hen.

I feel with these volumes that the most memorable parts are Hananoi's growth, which I think holds true this volume too (LOL), but there really felt something special about Hotaru and her realizing Hannaoi's struggle and wanting to support him the best way SHE can. She really has grown a lot as a character too and was glad to see that more prominent in this volume. <3

Hananoi once again shined, but I LOVED how he shined in sports this volume! Not only that though, shoutout to Kei-kun who simply accepts Hananoi and doesn't try to change him. He sticks up for him in his own way and I think he really is befriending Hananoi. Very thankful for him in this story and all he's doing to help our lead shine because boy did he do just that!

I fully agree with Hotaru that while he may have struggled at times, his smile shone brighter than it ever has. It was so full of light that it makes me happy just thinking about it! <3

Definitely another wonderful volume in this series!! Very much loved it!

"Always wanting to help someone in need…always saying sorry if they did something bad and saying thanks. Doing normal things like that, in totally normal fashion…it's a lot harder than it seems."

2020 Read #630

While I really have gotten attached to Hotaru and Hananoi, there are still concerning undertones in this series: namely, how Hananoi is so honed in on Hotaru that he doesn’t want any other friends, attachments, or connections. It’s worrisome to me because such a relationship will leave Hotaru at best smothered and at worst potentially manipulated emotionally. I know this is a manga, and one with highschool-age characters at that, but Hananoi’s single-minded focus on his relationship with Hotaru is not healthy — and it will harm not only him but eventually her as well.

Too cute & heart warming for my single a**!
.
Why boys have such a huge problem with being called cute though?
I mean, being called "cute" is one of the highest compliments a guy can get from me =)

This is literally adorable, I can’t.

Content/TW-
3 forms of hot, 2 oh my god, 2 suck, 1 damn it, 1 crap, 1 hell-bent, 1 shut up, 1 what the hell; Recalling a prank on our FL when she was in middle school involving her hair; a mention of kicking butt; a mention of ML being called a “god on earth”;
1 kiss; a dreamed almost kiss; recalling a kiss (a few times, more embarrassment and concern than anything else, barely-above-not-detailed); 1 embrace; head patting; hand holding; Main Couple say they’re going to ask for permission from each other before they touch or kiss each other (but she doesn’t think a little bit here and there is wrong, too much will overwhelm her though); Mentions of kisses & kissing; A few mentions of crushes; A couple mentions of a player; A mention that no decent (adult) man reaches out to teen girls; Dating, dates, boyfriends/girlfriends, falling in love & such is the main focus & discussed often.

Love it! ❤️🥰

I love this series so much!

Re-read #3: One of the reasons why I love this series is because it shows how Hananoi is always working towards being better and being willing to learn and grow with Hotaru. It takes a couple volumes to start seeing it but the continuous growth on both of their parts is amazing. Hananoi learning that it’s okay to have friends and make genuine connections is so nice to see. I love seeing his interactions with Kurata. It’s also nice to see Hotaru opening herself up to love and romance and gushing about her relationship with her friends and sister (her sister fading out while Hotaru is talking about their first kiss is hilarious).

I love seeing how they create boundaries and communicate when they are uncomfortable or need a warning before doing something (i.e., when they decide to ask permission before they kiss).

One of my favorite parts of this volume is the basketball game. The way they support each other is so wholesome. Instead of getting upset that they can’t see each other as often they cheer the other on. And when they do see each other, it makes it even more special. The way Hananoi instantly finds Hotaru as soon as she cheers for him at the basketball game. Also, Hotaru talking about how brightly Hananoi shines is so sweet.

This series never fails to make me smile and just gives me all the fluffy, cozy vibes.

What are the odds her older sister starts dating Kuroe-san?

This volume was full of sweetness - Hananoi is such an earnest guy, and is grappling with some fundamental changes in the way he thinks. You can really see it in how he gives a high five to Kei at the end - slowly his world is becoming wider and he's not quite sure he likes it. I'm interested in when and how he reveals their shared past to Hotaru - she did mention in an earlier book that she had exchanged cards with someone with a name similar to his, but obviously they didn't stay in touch and she managed to forget him (well, she didn't get his card...). This confirms my thought that he was at that park when they "first met" this time because he had feelings for her when he was young. I really wonder about his relationships in the interim, since he seems to have been searching for his soulmate this whole time, and it's hard to determine how experienced he is (their "first kiss" was pretty intense). Hananoi wanting so badly to be "cool" was super cute - the scene where he is lifting Hotaru and smiling wholeheartedly is one of my favorites.

The old man makes a good point about it being hard to be "normal," and do "normal good things." I hope it reveals his identity at some point. I've been wondering if he disappeared because he died or some other reason.

A solid volume with a slow start and a high octane ending.

Art: ★★★★☆
Story: ★★★★☆

The beginning of this volume features a lot of insecurities by Hananoi-kun. He’s not a strong character. In fact, he seems deeply abused.

In the past, I wondered if I was reading a slow-burn horror manga, and he was about to show us the bodies. His girlfriend was so much more mature and stable, especially in comparison. It was often difficult to imagine the two of them together. She was so solid, and he was so needy. He gave me the creeps.

Yet as this volume moved along, Hananoi’s redemption arc ramped up. He became fixated on mastering basketball so that he could look cool for his girlfriend. It’s a silly plot point, and yet very on point with somebody his age. Also, it was narrated believably as we watched him interact with peers and open his world even just a little bit. In fact, there was excellent plot pacing from cover to cover.

In the end, I found this story arc vital to Hananoi’s character. I wasn’t even disappointed that there were no bodies in a shed somewhere. I also enjoyed the yonkoma (four-panel gag strips) that were sprinkled throughout the volume. I’m not normally a fan of yonkoma,, but these were insightful to the characters and poked fun of their foibles.

Excellent volume over all.

hananoi's backstory/POV of the traumatic haircut scene is finally revealed and it's quite heartwrenching. I am interested to see how this eventually is revealed to hotaru.

this basketball arc had me kicking my feet and giggling!! so freaking adorable!! I am really appreciating a few things: 1) how hananoi is ever so slowly learning and growing as a person...he's really lucky kei is such an understanding, patient friend. 2) hotaru is coming out of her shell and is doing so much better about communicating with hananoi. the boundaries they set are v healthy! 3) hotaru and her sister are soooo cute, and it was really great to see more of their relationship.

scenes that pushed this into 5★ territory - the hat kiss, hananoi/kei's high-five, and hananoi's adorable reaction to hotaru finally calling him cool (,,> ᴗ <,,) plus the bonus chapter with the glasses was downright precious!

it's still amusing to me how red flag coded Hananoi is sldklasgf

if you meet anyone that acts like Hananoi* I'd recommend you to run for the hills because real life is not an adorable shoujo manga. in fiction a guy like this can be a sweet and good boyfriend (although he could still use some therapy), but in reality you'll be probably be getting a restraining order for a stalker.

*: by that, I mean: insecure, jealous even of his girlfriend's shadow, obsessed, doesn't have any friends, and low key hates all his girlfriend's friends because they take her attention away from him etc. yeeeeah it sounds pretty bad, suspension of disbelief can do wonders. again, in non-fictional scenarios, RUN.

Hananoi’s backstory was something we needed! Honestly, it finally shows us why Hananoi is so intense and wants to see Hotaru happy. He has always liked her and finally had an opportunity so he took it! I think it’s really sweet how he’s trying to make up for the past. We also see him getting better at having acquaintances, even if they’re not friends yet, he’s trying to do everything he can for Hotaru. Also, we see Hotaru calling Hananoi “cool” and it’s the sweetest thing ever!! I love their relationship a lot, they are the cutest ever! I’m also kind of excited to see Hotaru’s sister and the manager, maybe something will bloom there?

We're slowly learning more about Hanananoi's childhood and his point of view when he met Hotaru in elementary school. Hanananoi get more lessons on working with others and being a friend (even if he still won't call it that) when the school holds a basketball tournament and as usual, he's determined to win for Hotaru's sake. There are a few moments when it seems like it could all unravel, but fortunately Kei-chan is a pretty good friend and a pro at smoothing things over with his teammates. Of everyone in their friend group, he's is most likely making the largest strides as far as a separate friendship with Hanananoi.

Okay this one was a liiiiiitle cuter. Honestly where is the older sister/bookstore manager romance spinoff???? Literally they spoke once and I was more invested than the main couple lol

Also…this man needs HELP!!!! Sir, go to therapy. You can’t have other friends because you have your girlfriend???? You only want to be with her/think of her 24/7 and shun normal guys who want to be your friend????? Sir get a hobby

Hananoi is sloooowly, but surely realizing that perhaps maybe, just maybe, he doesn't hate the thought that he's friends with Kei. It's a good and necessary shift in his mentality, because his core belief (thanks to his mentor) has always been that he's only needed one person in his life. This is good progress!

This manga just gets better and better. I am glad that we finally got the backstory of Hananoi and the reason why he has been acting this way for so long. I am so proud of him for finally starting the process of opening himself to other people and welcoming friends into his life. I am glad that I started reading this manga. It is too good.

I just simply adore this series!

Hotaru & Hananoi are simply splendid. What a wonderful couple. She's adorable, he's really cool. He may not care about having friends, since he has her, but hey not everyone is a social butterfly. He just lives every moment for her. It may be borderline obsession, but it's really sweet, too. It's obvious they love each other, & that they make each other happy. I look forward to the next volume. This really is a pleasant story. Art, excellent. I love the facial expressions. Dialogue, so very true to the heart. So loving & kind. Characters, believable, likeable, relatable, admirable.
