Spiritual writer, theologian, and philosopher Jesuit Fr. Robert Spitzer tackles the topic of recognizing and overcoming spiritual evil. His focus is the human heart. His our moral and spiritual transformation, which leads to true peace and genuine happiness. The book is divided into two main the realities of God's goodness and of spiritual evil, and recognizing and overcoming diabolical tactics, which range from temptation and deception to the Deadly Sins.
Father Spitzer shows readers how to experience God's peace even during times of suffering and persecution. He examines the basics of the spiritual life and Christian mysticism, including the contemplative dimension. He explains the purgative, illuminative, and unitive aspects of spirituality, as well as the Lord's consolation and the passive Dark Night of the Spirit.
Father Spitzer provides the biblical and theological background of Jesus' victory over Satan. The author also explores the reality of the Devil, including extraordinary manifestations of diabolic activity such as possession. He recalls the true story of the famous possession case on which the novel and film The Exorcist were based.
In the final sections of the book the author
how diabolical spiritual forces operatehow temptation works, and what to do to defeat itthe "deadly sins" and how to overcome them
I cannot believe I took so long to read this book. I let so many other books jump in there, when this book was one I really needed to read. The first half of the book was pretty basic, at least for me, as things I already knew. Then it went more in depth with vices, of which I seem to still carry many around on my back. This was a great wake up call and finishing the second half of this book was great timing. I am so excited to start the second volume, "Called Out of Darkness: Contending With Evil Through the Church, Virtue, and Prayer." It sounds absolutely fantastic.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants more in depth analysis of this struggle we all have with combating the darkness within ourselves, our world etc. Really see what the deadly sins are and how you may not even be aware of how deadly they are and how easily we pick them up.
First book of Fr Spitzer’s and now I want to read all his books. By the title you’d think this one would be very deep into the demonic but even this hefty content he makes it approachable and not scary if you take God’s hands and squeeze them tightly.
