They both know the other should be off-limits, but spending time together--cooking, talking, laughing--is so easy and wonderful. Their attraction is undeniable and once Kendall learns that Luke is actually available, all bets are off.
Sizzling chemistry quickly gives way to real feelings. But Kendall’s stay is temporary. Can their friends with benefits arrangement blossom into a forever love or will they both wind up alone again?

It’s been awhile since a book just grabbed me from the 1st page. This book did that. Kendall is endearing and emotional for reasons. Luke is his rock right from the start. Their dynamic was unique. What happens when you fall in love with your sister’s fake boyfriend?
Once Kendall finds the fake fact out.. total melty hotness ensues! WOWser the sex in this book as well as all the feelings will melt your brain. 🔥🔥🔥🤯 It made me smile so much as their relationship went from FWB to true love. 🥰
As with any Crystal Lacy book, food is almost another MC. Love that! Food porn FTW. 🍱🥞🥓🥘
Can you tell I loved this book?!? The premise was unique and it had so much heart. Highly recommend!
Had to pull the plug on this one. The plot is too ridiculous and none of it made any sense whatsoever.
The start of the book just immediately drops you into the story and it honestly gave me whiplash. Kendall catches his boyfriend f-cking his neighbor, has no friends and nowhere to go, so he goes to his sister Keira’s. Sister is out of town on business so her hot boyfriend Luke invites him in. Let’s chat about what didn’t make sense babes:
☝🏼Luke and Keira have been lying to everyone about being in a relationship for like a decade because they don’t want family bothering them about dating. HUH
☝🏼 Luke enters a second fake relationship with Kendall to help make the ex jealous, which is blessed and encouraged by the sister. Including physical acts to really sell it!
☝🏼 Kendall picks up zero cues which make it very obvious Luke and Keira are not together. Hardly see each other, have separate lives, don’t share a bedroom. Like this is never pondered once.
☝🏼 Luke’s reason for not wanting a relationship ever (I.e. cue decade long fake one) is because he comes from a long line of scumbags who are terrible to their partners and assumes he’ll just be one too. Like…WHAT.
Every bit of “drama” and every obstacle up to that point was totally contrived, and I had to dip out. I’m sure others will find this story fun and cute, just not me ❤️
I loved it🤩. I usually think the sex is too much if a lot of scenes are there, but here I don't know, there were lots of scenes but I didn't feel it was too much. I loved the couple here too. Luke and Kendall were awesome. I especially loved Kendall. His filterless-ness was so adorable. And Luke the stupid man being so hot and cold but sweet nonetheless.
This really started out pretty damn good: The characters were likable and the chemistry was palpable. It had a very light-hearted and sweet air to it, which was enjoyable.
I liked the dynamic between Luke and Kendall, and I especially liked Luke’s personality. He was truly quite dreamy, and took care of Kendall so well. It definitely gave me some butterflies.
Although, the further along in the story we got, the more certain things started to drag or become irritating to me.
The most prominent dislike I had with this novel was the whole situation with Mizuki. I thought it was so incredibly odd for him to be meddling into his cousin’s (Luke) business so much and to then continually start flirting with the same guy (Kendall) he thought his cousin had a crush on? I mean.. Ugh, what a dipshit. It actually annoyed me a lot, to be honest. I grew a distinct dislike for the guy, and he was way too present near the end. It even seemed like he could easily replace Luke and nobody would blink an eye. Like, excuse me?? I could have definitely done without his character entirely, and the fact that he was constantly there, ruined a big part of my reading experience. I don’t doubt that I would have rated this book higher if it weren’t for Mizuki. At the end, the author even hints that he might get his own book, but I can’t see myself ever getting excited for it, no matter how much the tropes would fit my tastes. Fuck this guy, honestly.
Anyway, that was quite the rant. More importantly, though, I did like the two main characters a lot and their relationship was sweet, but unfortunately, nothing about this was mind-blowing. It was all quite average, and it never hit very deep emotional levels or something like that.
The book had its moments and my favourite aspect was probably the pining and mutual longing for each other. I especially liked it when it was Kendall pining for Luke. Although, I do have to say that these two could have definitely started communicating their feelings better near the end. That was kind of stupid and almost unrealistic merely for the sake of drama.
Kendall has just found himself homeless after he catches his boyfriend of 2 years in bed with their neighbor. With no where to go shows up on his sister's door hoping for help. Unfortunately for him his sister is on a business trip in Japan but her "boyfriend" of 10 years is there for the rescue.
Kendall knows it is not wise to crush on his sister's boyfriend but he can't help himself. Luke is a kind, funny, good looking man who knows how to cook. However, things are not always as they appear.
I enjoyed the relationship build between the two. I didn't buy Luke's reason for why he didn't want a relationship. I thought Kendall's ex was a creep. Luke's cousin was the best and deserves a HEA. At times I thought Kendall was a little over the top but overall a likable character.
Overall an ok read with little angst and a HEA.
*I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.*
This book wasn't poorly written or riddled with typos, but it left a lot to be desired character-wise.
When all was said and done, it was such a lopsided relationship that I just couldn't get behind the characters' HEA. Sorry, Luke, Kendall's cute, but you can do better.
Seriously! Luke continually cooked and cleaned for Kendall. He financially, emotionally, and professionally supported Kendall at every turn. AND he gave Kendall all the deep dicking he craved.
And Kendall....? Well, he smiled at Luke a lot.
Yup. That's all I got.
He never even gave the poor man a blow job!
HEAs are not built of cute smiles alone, my friends.
I think this book had great potential and I liked it for the most part. But there needed to be more pages added to make Kendall & Luke's relationship more believable. Some things didn't add up and I couldn't connect with them as much. But my favorite part of this book was Luke's cousin. He definitely deserves a HEA and hopefully he gets a book, I'm not sure if he has one already though.
This was previously a DNF for me (43%), when I read it with my eyes. I thought everything about it was ridiculous. This time, I decided to embrace the fact that it is indeed ridiculous. The narration, and Kendall, are what really carried this for me. I still don’t think I’d be able to get through this if reading with my eyes, but Ferraiulo just nailed Kendall. I did think Luke’s voice (and accent(?)) was a bit inconsistant, but let’s face it, I wasn’t here for Luke, or his whitefanging.
What a sweet book. This story has been told many times, but this was a great retelling. I loved Kendall and Luke. I liked the way Crystal handled the inevitable break up and get back together scene. This can be so tiresome, but I didn’t get at all frustrated this time.
This was my second book by Crystal Lacy and I loved both of them. It’s always a pleasure finding an author you like and I’m looking forward to reading more books by her.
Cute and low angst best friend's brother romance. I appreciate that it's not instalove, but unfortunately the falling-in-love part still fell short. I get why the two like each other in theory, but I didn't really feel their chemistry. Luke in particular remained rather bland throughout the book. Maybe having Luke's POV somewhere in the beginning showing his "incompleteness" pre-Kendall and/or adding more domestic fluff scenes showing the pair interacting with each other happily would've helped in that.
Luke has been friends with Kendall's sister for a decade, and pretending to be her boyfriend for years. And even though Kendall has known Luke for a decade, they aren't close. In fact, he barely knows Luke. But then, he isn't even that close with his sister... which doesn't make sense as she is the one he goes running to, and he doesn't have any other real friends in the city. And at no point does he bring up the fact that Keira and Luke have separate rooms... I know a few couples that have their own rooms, but it generally isn't the norm.
Luke recalls Kendall's ex, Maverick, who he'd seen the two of them together at a bunch of the family gatherings. And yet Kendall thought his ex would not recognize Luke? And yet Maverick only mentions knowing him from one specific family gathering? Kendall realizes in hindsight that hoping his ex-boyfriend of two years won't recognize his sister's super hot boyfriend of a billion years who he has met at multiple family events.
And I don't get how Kendall isn't outraged at the fact his sister lied to him for a decade. In fact, her encouraging Luke and Kendall do whatever needs to be done to convince Maverick they aren't faking it, knowing her brother believes Luke and her to be madly in love, borders on cruel.
As for Luke not doing relationships, I'm going to need a better reason than his father, brother and grandfather being bad at relationships, so he is never going to be in one.
I also don't like how Kendall has been staying at his sister's place for almost a month (so much for looking for a place) and yet we see barely any of it. We are just told about how close him and Luke have gotten in that time. Same as how we are told about how charming Kendall is (and yet he has no friends?). There's a lot of things being told, without anything to back it up.
I think this had potential, it just wasn't well thought out. If Luke was more recently fake-dating Keira, and it not having been this decade long ruse, and all of the sudden, Luke and Kendall are hot for each other and popping boners left, right and centre, I think I could have gotten on board.
I enjoyed many aspects of this book: the food, Luke’s domestic/protective nature, Kendall’s delightful inability to handle himself in the kitchen as well as his inner dialogue, and the sheer convolutedness of the fake relationships at one point. What I didn’t enjoy so much was the romance. I loved Luke and Kendall together—despite what I just wrote—but I don’t feel like we had enough time with them. I could believe their friendship but the romance was stretching things a bit for me. Luke’s turn-around from his relationship hang-ups, I felt, could/should have taken a bit longer especially with how strongly he clung to his concerns. With that said, I’m happy this book ultimately remained low-angst. I do also feel that Kendall could have been fleshed out a bit more. Kendall’s sister seemed entertaining, and I’m interested in reading Luke’s cousin’s story. I do wish we’d had some scenes with Kendall’s parents. Maybe been there during the relationship reveals. Oh, I nearly forgot to add that Kendall has (or had) terrible taste in men. While I did think the story had a lot of good elements, I do also think it could have been better. But overall, it was a good, quick read.
Brother-in-Law Material is bursting with fake relationships, my favorite trope.
It took almost half the book for me to really get into the story as there were a few things that stood out and made the story a bit too unbelievable for me. Kiera and Luke have been together for years, but Kendall knows virtually nothing about Luke. I would think someone would know a sibling's long-term significant other better than Kendall seems to know Luke. Plus, Luke and Kiera live together but have separate bedrooms? The separate bedrooms situation was never questioned or explained, as far as I recall.
Putting those issues aside, I did come to enjoy Kendall and Luke's relationship and Luke's jealous streak. His interactions with his cousin and the ex were highly entertaining. I am hoping Mizuki gets a book because he was fantastic.

My 2nd Crystal Lacy book and my favourite of them. I really liked Kendall, he was charming and easy going despite the cheating ex that wouldn't leave him alone. I wanted to shake Luke as he was frustrating but that's just because I was engrossed in the story. His cousin is an intriguing character. A little bit of early drama, a tiny bit of angst and a good amount of steam - it doesn't overwhelm the story
This was my first introduction to this author and I'm so glad to have found her! I love Kendall and Luke as individuals and really enjoyed their chemistry. Kendall's love for food, even though he's an awful cook, was adorable and I loved the idea of a YouTube channel with a person who can't cook...cooking.
It was a quick read, sweet. and cute. I can't wait to read Misuki’s story. He needs his own HEA!
*I received an ARC for this book, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.*
This is a sweet one. Kendall is one of those sunshine characters that remind me of a golden retriever puppy: bright and soft and excitable and with very visible emotions. Luke is more of a stoic character, and while he gives "jaded grump" vibes at times, he's more of a comfortable, solid sweetheart. That and the comedy of errors kind of plot makes for a fun, lighthearted read. I really enjoyed it!
It really was a sweet book but nothing I haven’t read before and nothing that really will stick for long in my head but it still was a delightful read and I don’t regret picking it up☺️!!
I really ejoyed this fast reading well written romance by a new author for me, it was just so good. I got off work early so I headed home to spend some quality time with my guy, but as I walked into our bedroom I found him with our next door neighbor, so I left and went my sisters hoping I could stay with her and her guy for awhile till I found a new place, the only problem is, is that I'm falling for her guy and I refuse to hurt my sis while she's out of the country on business. Now I have to figure out what am I going to do now that I found out their relationship is fake and he doesn't do forever.
1. Kendall’s sister, Keira, and her best friend Luke, are in a fake relationship to get her parents off her back about marriage. They’ve been fake dating for TEN years for a very flimsy reason. It made no sense because we see her parents in only one scene at the end, so we don't get to know them in the book. Only what we've been told. So if her parents are overbearing or annoying, it happened off-page.
2. Kendall is so goddamn clueless and not in the cute way. More like, “my sister and her boyfriend of ten years have separate bedrooms, and I’m oblivious to it because I have the biggest crush on said boyfriend,” kind of clueless. Seriously. Separate bedrooms, and no explanation for that whatsoever. Kendall doesn’t even question it. That’s a red flag to me and anyone with half a brain, but we’ve established Kendall is beyond clueless.
3. Luke’s reason for avoiding relationships is weak and very contrived. The author could have tried harder with that one.
4. Get this; so Luke and Kendall fake a relationship to get Kendall’s ex (who for some reason, he can't stand up to) off his back. Now Keira (who is already in a fake relationship with Luke), is in huge support of this arrangement and even suggests some physical touching to really sell it… AS IN, A FAKE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOUR BROTHER AND YOUR FAKE BOYFRIEND?!
5. Kendall is supposed to be this charming character who attracts a lot of attention from the hotties (peep Luke and Mizuki), but literally has zero friends... Yeah, bye.
think It’s not the book but me... or not No rating Dnf at 80% but I skipped to know when they’ll end up and it took them too much time to get their asses out their heads specially Luke by the end of the book. I have to say I also skipped some pages because I got bored and it’s like reading “ Stealing Rendall” all over again. I think I’m not in the right mood for this kind of read but mostly because I don’t do friends with benefits to lovers anymore because it’s always sex for the sake of sex, they spend their time fucking like bunnies, the never miscommunicate and every time they try they avoiding the elephant in the room and end up by fucking. Besides they never really connect emotionally. I don’t even know why I chose to read it, sometimes. I have to stop doing the same mistakes over and over. I didn’t connect to Mcs and I couldn’t warm up to both of them , Luke’s eternal inner monologues annoyed the hell out of me and Kendall was pathetic, proposing the fuck buddies arrangement knowing he’ll get hurt is stupid. I don’t think they’re really in love with each other. They got together by the end of the book (95%) then it’s over. There’s a few weeks later epilogue. no HEA but HFN.
I don’t recommend if you don’t like romance with very slooooooow very sloooooow burn, absolutely no relationship development and a HFN.
Brother-in-Law Material is a super cute and steamy low angst romance. Kendall is adorable, Luke is sweet and caring, and there’s a fun side character, Luke’s cousin Mizuki, who really needs his own book. There’s some possessive alpha behavior from Luke (which is always fun when the guy is denying his feelings to himself) and any relationship drama is resolved quickly. I totally had fun reading this! Check it out if you want a steamy, low-angst read!
