After a horrible accident that kills her sister, ten-year-old Terri Wilcox has to live her life in a wheelchair. She becomes a burden for her passive mom and aggressive dad. So one summer, they send Terri to Camp Cherry Plain – Wheelchair Camp. She thought it was a place she could fit in, but she soon realizes that's not the case. Why does Johnny Harrison – the boy's head counselor, keep disappearing into the woods? Why does Mercedes Lane – the privileged blonde camper – keep wheeling herself from their cabin at night? Why would Tommy Knox – the kid from juvey – have a knife hidden in his wheelchair?Someone at Wheelchair Camp has a dark secret. One by one, campers and counselors begin to die, and only a handful of the wheelchair-bound kids are left to fend for their lives as a brutal killer stalks them. They should have been warned …They should have been told …Don't go to Wheelchair Camp.It puts a new spin on terror.
David Irons was the kid who went to his room to watch and read horror when his relatives came round. It paid off. When he left his room, he became an award-winning filmmaker and writer living on the south coast of England. His films, colourful and stylish in design, have won awards at the Cambridge Film festival, Las Vegas VIFF festival, and LA Independent Festival for cinematography, editing, writing, and directing. '7 Winters Alone' - a sci-fi, horror short - was a winner in David Lynch's 2014 Short Film Competition.
In 2019 David had his first novel, Night Waves, published, followed by Night Creepers, Polybius, and The Bloody Tracks of Bigfoot in 2020 - 2021 from Severed Press. Since then, David has become a Splatterpunk award-nominated writer for his '80s summer camp slasher, 'Don't Go To Wheelchair Camp.'
The moral of this story is to be weird and stay in your room. It pays off in the end.
If you are not a fan of 80's slasher flicks, then definitely Don't go to Wheelchair Camp. Camp Cherry Plain is host to kids who are disabled and are (obviously) confined to wheelchairs. The last summer the camp was open was in 1978. This is the story of what happened to the kids who were there and the people who were responsible for them. The history of that gory summer has become a legend amongst young campers (in the book). The beginning of the story introduces us to all of the campers, counselors and the owner. The group is full of cliched characters, just like in the movies. And just like in the movies, we are drawn into their lives and into situations that are improbable. And I enjoyed it all the way through. This is a fun and engrossing read. That is, if you appreciate a vicious slasher, grotesque slaughter scenes, and losing characters that you may have grown attached to. If you do go to Wheelchair Camp, expect plenty of drama, humor, sheets of blood and body parts, and unexpected twists and turns. Just try to keep your balance.
This is my first book from David Irons, and make no mistake, it will NOT be the last.
This book is reminiscent of the ‘slasher’ movies of the 80’s, and revolves around a group of wheelchair using teens, and Counsellors, spending Summer at ‘Camp Cherry Plains’ a.k.a ‘Wheelchair Camp’. Little do they know, this year will be completely different, and they will be lucky if they leave the ‘camp’ alive...there’s a murderer on the loose...who is picking these little ‘cherries’ off, one by one!!!
This was a thrill ride from the first chapter, which continued throughout, ramping up the tension towards a spectacular ending, which came out of nowhere!!!
This is such an awesome book, and I highly recommend it for any fans of the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise!!
Dont go to wheelchair camp is an 80s slasher movie in novel form and its dam good. All the characters are fully developed and David Irons dialogue of the kids makes it feel realistic and relatable. I particularly loved all the nicknames they have for each other.
It's a mystery of who the killer is until the final chapters and each of the kills are different and inventive and gory. The best thing about this novel is it's just so much fun, I could picture the camp and the kids different personalities vividly and the reveal and reasoning for the killers actions were well crafted. The chapters are short and sweet which I loved as well and makes it a quicker read when it's done that way for me personally. Plus the cover art is freaking amazing and totally gets the feel of the novel.
For an indie author this is top notch and I will be reading more from him for sure. 4.5 rounded down to 4. Looking forward to the sequel once hes finished writing it.
EDITED 18 JULY: I keep thinking about this book and recommending it to everyone I can think of. I don't know why I only made it 4 stars. Upping it to 5..bring on the sequel!!
This has been on my kindle for a while and now I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner. This slasher is an absolute page turner. Camp Cherry Plain- Wheelchair Camp to it occupants is not what it seems. There’s a killer on the loose and no ones safe. I loved David’s style of story telling it made it easy and fun to read.
Camp Cherry Plain, widely known as Wheelchair Camp, is the hunting grounds of a sadistic killer bent on hacking their way through a group of campers. From the moment I opened the book I could scarcely put it down, sleep being the enemy in this case. The book is lengthy, but the pacing makes it swing by quick. David brought the characters to life, I felt like I was watching a classic slasher I had never seen before. If you're a fan of Sleepaway Camp, Friday the 13th, The Burning, Madman, you will not want to pass this one up! Laced with great comedy, imaginative deaths, a great cast, Wheelchair Camp is the perfect slasher. Will the kids, hampered by their mobility, survive the brutal butcher? Or will they end up sectioned like cuts of meat? Find out in this awesome slasher: Don't Go To Wheelchair Camp!
A campground known as Camp Cherry Plain is home to positive and uplifting experiences to disadvantaged kids. Also, known as Wheelchair Camp, it’s yearly boarded guests arrive in a yellow school bus and partake in annual activities such as gaming events, arts & crafts and wheelchair races. However this fateful summer will bring mysterious shrouds of darkness, a camp created from bloodshed and forced participants in the ultimate game of survival.
Equipped with not only teenage love and lust, Don’t Go To Wheelchair Camp also captures an individuals attempt to escape a brutal tragic past. In addition the camp’s scandalous rumors of drugs, supernatural existences and vanishing residents make this a distinct page turner for fans of the genre. Author David Irons has originated his own campfire tale with images of ominous overnight lodging, ax-wielding activities and non-stop camper carnage.
It’s impressive how David Irons reveals to the reader only what he wants them to see, similar to a limited glow from a dying flashlight. From his eye catching cover to the wonderful retro vibe, Irons always seems to offer the best overall reading experience possible. Published by Severed Press and coming in at 350 blood soaked pages, there’s never a lack of glorified gore and menacing massacre.
Part Sleepaway Camp, part Friday the 13th, this nostalgic trip to those slasher classics carries with it a sense of dread and a bad case of the heebie-jeebies. Listen closely, the rumbling you hear in the distance is coming your way…prepare yourself for a five star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ splattery good time.
I have seen so many great things about this book over the last couple of years and I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it because, holy shit, what a ride!! I know I'm late to the party, but I also knew it would be worth the wait, and I wasn't wrong! 🖤
Fraught with tension and horror from the start, this book will have your heart stopping and you holding your breath so many times throughout. It has a deeply ominous feeling of suspense and a creepy, claustrophobic feeling of being watched at all times.
A tale of teen love, jealousy, drugs, bullying, abuse, trying to fit in, insecurities, strengths and determination! The story starts slow and steady and builds to a crescendo of absolute chaos and carnage. With some fantastic, imaginative and brutal kills, leading to a brilliant twist that I genuinely did not see coming!
Tammy and Terri are on a road trip with their abusive father and somewhat timid and downtrodden mother, when disaster strikes in the most brutal and upsetting way, and Terri is left to start a new life, as a teenager, without her sister, and in a wheelchair! She has the opportunity to get away from her parents for a while and it's a relief to head off to Camp Cherry Plain, or as it's better known, Wheelchair Camp! It will be perfect for her, surely, all she wants to do is fit in, so this should be the ideal opportunity….
She's not the only new guy at camp, and when she meets Tommy, she feels they have a connection, common ground, and maybe a connection of hearts and minds too. Beethoven has a massive chip on his shoulder and has been prepping himself for this years camp, he's had enough of being a nobody, he's come back stronger this year, physically as well as mentally. But, just as he realises that it's not really in him to continue to be nasty to everyone, things take a deadly turn, striking a new fear and intense panic into the campers….
Things started to go wrong from the minute they all set their wheels on camp soil, and there's an uneasy presence drifting about the place. Campers, counselors and camp owners alike, all have their own reasons for their next steps, all separate from each other but when they all combine one horrible night, all hell breaks loose and spins out of control, and when history looks like its repeating itself with Terri and her father, she tries to channel her sisters positivity and determination, but someone has other ideas for her. And then it's down to just the kids, stranded, immobile and with an invisible and deadly killer on the loose….
Right from the very beginning I thought I knew where things were headed, and I was wrong, every time. With so many twists and turns youll be kept guessing the whole time, right up until the very end! David has a true knack for making you feel for his characters, true emotions are brought into play with his writing, believable characters that you either love or hate, that you feel true anger towards and true fear for. I actually shouted out in disbelief on several occasions, and with the brilliant dark humour and banter between characters, caught myself laughing out loud too.
What a brilliant, bloody, terrifying roller coaster ride of a slasher! I loved every second. You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family, family is 4eva! 🖤
This is my first book by this author, that I actually won for subscribing to his Newsletter. And I am so glad I did because I hadn’t seen much about it on social media and I ended up freaking loving this book! The name of the book cracked me up, and was hard at first to take seriously, but while reading it I was blown away! An awesome solid plot, great scenes of blood and gore, and kids you come to really care about and root for. Just when you think you know who the killer is, that person ends up dead. All in all, I am very impressed with David’s storytelling and writing ability and am looking forward to reading more of his work. I would recommend this to all my horror, slasher loving friends!
This book was soo freakin' awesome!! Like one of the best slashers I've read in quite awhile. The storyline, the characters, the KILLS.. everything about it made it the perfect summer slasher! Easily a 5/5 skull read 💀
Welcome to Camp Cherry Pines. The campers call it Wheelchair Camp. Things are tense this year after a accident happens. Other strange things occur a camper is killed. Is a killer stalking the kids? Tension filled read.
2 words: absolutely awesome. A YA slasher novel like A Clown in a Cornfield but 10 times more entertaining. If you adore horror and have a dark sense of humor like me, you’ll love this one!
I’ve been wanting to read this book for as long as I can remember. This book has so many twists and turns and I was so excited to find out what was going to happen. Everyone needs a wheelchair camp/slasher book, right?
I really enjoyed Wheelchair Camp because Irons does something new with the traditional camp slasher story. The kids are likable characters and I felt bad for them when they had to endure the horrors of Wheelchair Camp. A good book to read during the current spooky season.
Fun from start to finish. Up there with Stephen Crye’s Joyride as one of the best slasher novels I’ve read. Legitimately fees like something from the ‘80s. A perfect summer read!
Got to say, I am impressed with the author's writing. Actually pretty damn realistic and genuine.
I was actually planning on reading this two days before but kept getting side tracked by other things. I could of easily kept reading past the first 20 pages, but it was already getting too late. It was also freezing cold despite it being late June. It's been an incredibly weird weather year so far.
It starts off really good. I really enjoyed the opening scene and the bus ride to camp where everyone is introduced and when they get to the camp.
Friday the 13th is my favorite slasher franchise and Friday the 13th part 5 has been my favorite of the series for years. I don't care what anyone else says. Roy is awesome, "His eyes" is awesome, Reggie is awesome, Ethel "Bout time, ya f**ckwad! Knew you couldn't pass up on my stew!", *picks up dead chicken and holds it's by it's neck and lower body* "I'm gonna chop you up in itty bitty pieces my friend...just like they did that PIGGO, there at that f**king crazy farm!" "I want this LOONY BIN closed down!" is awesome.
And as I was reading this book I began to suspect the author is a fan of Part 5 as well. Despite it being the "most hated" of the entire series for the same dumb reason why Halloween 3 became so hated. Because it has "Roy, not Jason." Even though they all LOVE part 1 which has Pamela, Jason's mother. Roy goes right back to part 1 in concept. Psycho parent [Pamela and Roy] blaming the institution [Summer camp/Reform house for mental patients.] for the death of their son and taking revenge for their son. Literally the exact same concept and idea. Yet people hate it, even though Jason didn't show up until part 2 and his appearance changed. In part 2 he's wearing the burlap sack over his head and part 3 is when he gets the infamous and iconic Hockey mask.
Given that, I do like that...but I believe there is a line between horror and comedy and TOO MUCH comedy can take away the mood, at least for me. Where EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER and almost every single line is competing for comedy one liners.
I think it's also safe to say the author is also a fan of Sleepaway camp. As I obviously am as well. But the characters in that movie were just @ssh*les, not comedic @ssh*les. So some of the dialog I think goes "too far" for my liking. Not in content, but "is that how people really talk?" And I did like the blatantly Sleepaway camp reference near the end of the book where he describes the scenery as a "teenage wasteland" which is the title of part 3; "Sleepaway camp 3: Teenage wasteland"
The first two deaths, not really to my liking in terms of writing. Could of been far more straight forward and better written.
One of the characters is basically today's stereotypical SJW and reminds me of a song back in the 2010's, at the rise and beginning of SJW infecting the culture [like everything else that has made the U.S. Toxic, including MAGA, Trump, Post modernism on steroids and from all sizes, conspiracy theory becoming mainstream, etc.]
"You're a guy Well I guess That's alright Just accept That your life Is an insult To mine."
"I believe I Own the world 'cuz this place Is so safe And my views Never change I'm oppressed And harassed Despite my life in the Upper class.
Equality for all But your sex makes you Inferior, you know We stand up, proud and tall With no sense of Self-awareness left to show."
F*cking posers. I recently got an SJW angry at me because I compared him to the religious right and he was like "I aint like Jerry Falwell!" and I am going "Like Frank Zappa put it 'well if it fits...". Actually what he said was "if it smells like a republican then it's a republican." SJWs, from the second I saw their content I instantly thought "They are LITERALLY just the left wing Jerry f**king Falwell! They are literally just the left wing version of the religious right." To quote a atheist advocate I am a fan of about Falwell.
"In addition to convincing others to waste their lives he also EXPLOITED those people for PROFIT. It's DESPICABLE. He did so many vile terrible things during his life. Lauded as this 'oh this cherubic reverend who was jovial and LOVES everybody.' HE WAS A OPPONENT OF FREE SPEECH! After 9/11 he blamed EVERYBODY WHO DISAGREED WITH HIM for the tragedy and he did it by name; Atheist, abortionists, lesbians, The ACLU. He was a colossal asshat! Who wasted his life and destroyed the lives of other and the world is better off now that he is dead. We are one person less HATEFUL. LESS PREJUDICED, LESS DIVISIVE, LESS IGNORANT, LESS MANIPULATIVE."
Jerry Falwell was a total fascist authoritarian theocrat who wanted the ENTIRE WORLD to be dictated by his fundamentalist christian theocracy...that isn't SJWism? Just from a "left wing" perspective? - What they CLAIM is "left wing"? Because I am a Bernie Sanders democratic socialist capitalist libertarian. Maximum freedom with a very strong safe guard/social safety net. That includes the total destruction of monopolies...how the F**K can I truly be free if I don't have the BASIC fairness? In any system?! I am not free if the system is RIGGED against me. Yet I despise SJWism. "Segregation is cool"?! Really?! That's a "left wing" position?! BLATANT racism and sexism. Against white men AND minorities they CLAIM to like and speak for. "oh women and minorities are TOO F**KING STUPID to past the test. THEREFOR we need to DUMB THE TEST DOWN." That isn't racist and sexist?! YES IT F**KING IS! By the way, I noticed how NOBODY ever used the word "Black SEPARATIST". They would just promote and cite black separatism and black separatist rheoric, but never ever admit "I am a black separatist." Very much like those who called them selves a "classical liberal" Oh, well they used the word LIBERAL...when a classical liberal is just a conservative. It's all just a f**king con game. Just like Jesse Ventura has said about political parties. Political parties shouldn't even be spoken of. Instead let each politician "stand by them selves." with their policies. NOT a party/identity.
I see literally no difference between SJWism and any other cult and extremist authoritarian group. All of them just FIGHTING for their OWN PIECE of the pie.
And I know several 80's and even 90's kids who make sort of the same argument looking back at the PMRC and the religious right. Whether you were in the U.S. with "porn rock" or in the U.K with "Video nasties" and this talking point of "the right was the censor back in the 80's and 90's." then they go "BUT NOW it's the left. It's the SJWs." and you got a bunch of right wingers pretending they are pro free speech and imply the right was ALWAYS for free speech. Of course I am like "Wait....when the right wing EVER STOP?!" Because they've always been "snowflakes". They never stopped. I remember one youtuber who actually argued "I grew up in the 90's and the right wing were the biggest censors of video games. In the 80's the right wing was against music. THEREFOR I'm gonna vote for TRUMP." and of course, it's like......WAIT, WAIT....Trump literally BLAMED VIDEO GAMES for a school shooting 3 years ago. Let alone all the other censorship by Trump and from the right. So ya, my dislike/hate for SJWism/regressive left is TIED/CONNECTED to my dislike/hate of the right wing/religious right. Oh and by the way....Trump again, pandering to the religious right. Trump was no different then f**king Bush when it came to the religious right. That's how we got Roe vs Wade overthrown in the first place. Trump made a ton of promises to the religious right....so WHAT THE F**K ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! "oh the religious right/right wing back in the 80's/90's/2000's were the party of censorship. That's why I'm voting fro Trump." But Trump is part of the religious right!!!
And hell, even those who are younger who grew up in the 2000's still remember the right wing doing exactly what they've always done and are STILL doing. So even many young people who grew up during Bush will say about the SJWs "This reminds me of the 2000's with Fox news attacking video games and movies." Jack Thompson, a notorious ambulance chaser willing to blame video games at the drop of a hat before the bodies were even cold yet after a school shooting. Thompson in the 90's was also the republican lawyer who got the rap group "2livecrew" banned. He literally banned this band from existence. A record store owner was actually ARRESTED for selling their album. He also went after Madonna, Ice T, and a whole host of other music artists. Then you have the annual "Merry Christmas" fake controversy they made up, especially fox news. The Dixie chicks said they were ashamed Bush was from Texas, they went after the Dixie chicks for that and tried to ruin their careers, etc. They went after any and all celebrities, tried to "cancel" multiple actors who spoke out against the war. Again the "merry Christmas" where they go so far as to "cancel" stores for not shoving "Christmas" in your face every second. Even have a website where they give the stores a RATING. Where "oh this store says Christmas a little bit. Yellow rating", "this store says Christmas a LOT. Green rating", "oh this store doesn't use the word Christmas enough to our liking. Red rating. BOYCOTT IT!" That is literally CANCEL CULTURE....and they are STILL DOING IT and we see it ALL THE TIME. Yet I am suppose to IGNORE this nonsense because they put a L [left/liberal] in their name? Well, I f**king won't and I don't.
Member of Anthrax: There is still so much of the united states that's really run by the right wing christian attitude. If they decide they wanna start boycotting a company because this company might be selling something that they deem 'OFFENSIVE'. They do have a lot of power because they just tell all their f**king brainwashed people 'don't spend your money with that company' and they won't! THEY'RE ALL BRAINWASHED; THEY'RE ZOMBIES. They're all zombies.
As I've said many times "Frank Zappa and Jello Biafra pointed this all out back in the 80's." and they did.
Overall my favorite characters are Terri and Brendan, although Brendan is not mentioned a lot after they get to camp. But I do like almost all the characters. Even the mean characters.
Once the second death happens I really enjoyed it again. Again, I wanted to keep reading and by the time I stopped, I could see from my window it was early morning. Like 5 in the morning. Which has happened multiple times with books I couldn't put down. Again, some of the dialog sounds pretty forced. Like "who talks like that?!" but it seemed more appropriate in terms of what was happening and what the characters were feeling and what the author wanted to get across, etc. Or the story and characters found their footing, at least for me.
The deaths do get better in terms of writing and more frequent. Now one of my problems is this...I like slasher movies where the killer is very quietly killing everyone off and is only discovered towards the very end usually by the final girl. This slasher, the threat is known very early on. Or in the case of one of my all time favorite slasher movies Slumber party massacre, we get a few kills before the killer reveals them selves. In Slumber party massacre, he kills 6 people before making him self known to the girls. He kills a electrician, kills the next door neighbor, kills a couple, kills a student at the school, and makes his appearance known when he kills a pizza boy and his body plops on the floor when they answer the door.
Another problem I have with it is....the book at most takes place within literally 3 - 4 days. Wheelchair camp BARELY EVEN STARTED. So I would of liked more camp.
It does get really good and I did feel for several of the character's deaths. Which has always been an appeal to me as a slasher movie fan.
Joseph Zito wanted Friday the 13th part 4 to have many different aspects to it. A dog, a family, twins, the handsome "perfectly chiseled" guy who get's killed the shower; has his head crushed against the shower wall. The final girl jumping out of a window, breaking through the glass...from how many stories? She hits the ground and is unconscious for a few seconds. Despite this she keeps on that fight or flight survivor instinct and runs off to lure Jason away. Thinking her brother has left and she is going to distract Jason. Make him go after her. All the things you would love in a "final girl".
Despite all this these movies were called "sexist" "masochnistic trash", etc. But Zito also said he wanted another theme in the movie the sad reality and concept of "premature death". Teenagers renting a cabin in the woods to have a good time. Roger Ebert actually picked up on that message and what was his response? Well he very angrily said "And just think of the message this film offers to its teenage audience; the world is a totally evil place, this movie says. It'll kill ya. It doesn't matter what your DREAMS, HOPES, and AMBITIONS are. It doesn't matter if you have a new boyfriend or girlfriend or you got PLANS FOR THE FUTURE; YOU CAN FORGET THOSE PLANS BECAUSE YOUR GONNA WIND UP DEAD."
........AND?! WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT?!
And that is part of the appeal of slasher movies. At least for me. That's why I've never liked slasher movies where the characters are totally unlikeable. Which is different then "I love to HATE this character" "Wow, this character is a real [insert insult here]....but I still like them as a character." Like TIna from Friday the 13th part 7. Tina is obviously just a insecure brat and privledged bully, but she's still a CHARACTER.
Same with Friday part 5. Several times I am just going "Come on. They just wanted to do drugs, party, and have sex. Why they have to die?!" Thinking specifically of Billy. Works all day at the mental hospital. He just wanted to snort coke and party with his gf and they both get axed. I want to ROOT for the characters before they get killed or take revenge against the killer. A good slasher movie should make me want to
1.Root for the final girl. 2.Sympathize with the victims. 3.Vicarious thrill; from victims, killer, and final girl/boy.
There are two particular deaths that got to me. One of them happening to the nicest character in the book and I did appreciate the theme of "premature death".
As a slasher movie fan who's seen everything. At least the good ones [I avoid the notorious awful ones like Don't go in the woods.] I could see almost everything a mile away including the killer and the motive which has been done in countless slasher movies and other horror movies; Girl's nite oute, Funeral home, The lover butcher, etc.
I'm also a big giallo fan who's seen almost every giallo in existence. The 80's was the "golden age' of the slasher movies, while the 70's was the "golden age" of the giallo movie and of course in the 80's and 90's, the plot twists were so incredibly easy to predict and some films out right stealing a plot device from one of the classics. Perfect example being the "mistaken witness" device used in Bird of the Crystal Plumage [70's]. This was ripped off in You'll die at midnight [80's]. Spoiler alert for those movies. A witness, main character witnesses a victim and killer struggling over a knife. The killer is hurt but lives and everyone assumes the victim is actually the killer. Still a good movie. I've watched it multiple times, but that was the moment I instantly knew "Yep. She's the killer." and I had suspected that even before the scene, but that just confirmed it.
Still, despite that twist and motive. I did enjoy the added element to the killer which was actually pretty damn realistic. I always like it when I see very realistic and very human killers in a slasher movie. The two that comes to my mind would be The dorm that dripped blood and New years evil.
Killer holds a screw driver to final girl's neck: What's wrong with me? Uh? You don't even know who I am. Ya, I know, sure. I'm the smart ass nobody likes. Well, nobody ever takes seriously. Well, every bodies gonna be taking me seriously for now on. You can bet that! ....All I wanted was you...*starts smelling her hair*. But you don't even like me either. Just like everybody else. Well *pushes head of screw driver further into her throat as she leans her neck back*, your gonna end up just like everybody else too!
Killer tells wife he's the killer: Because I'm fed up...*points finger at his wife* you are just like every other lady in my life! Derek told me about how you behave around other men. Derek also told me how you've tried to turn on your own son and that is not nice. Women are not very nice people. They are MANIPULATIVE, and DECEITFUL, AND IMMORAL, AND VERY VERY SELFISH! See, that's why Evon was first, because you and she have been short changing me for years. I've had to beg her through you for EVERY CENT I've got. MY ALLOWANCE! Wife: That's not true. Killer: Oh, yes it is!
Review was too long. Read rest of review in comment section.
4/5 *I'm not going to give you the 'what this book is about' blurb - you can read that elsewhere.
1. I. Like. Slashers! You might be thinking 'well, no kidding, who doesn't?' I normally don't like gore - seeing it in a movie is way different than reading about it for me, and I typically don't love a lot of gore in my books, but when it's an 80's slasher style, I like it. 2. This was SO FUN. It did take a bit to ramp up, but it was very much story/scene/character building before the carnage began. It started like dipping your toe in just to test the water - you decide you don't want to go in so you turn around and then BAM - someone shoves you right into the deep end and you're in over your head. 3. I really liked the characters so it was a little sad to see them get picked off, but I knew what I was getting into. Also, the deaths are pretty varied and creative. 4. The ending did feel weird to me - the very ending; after camp part. You go 97% of the book with an awesome 80's summer camp slasher and then suddenly you're in some weird paranormal setting, which I don't hate, but just felt odd in this setting. I admit I didn't love that part, but it doesn't change the bulk of the story...or any of the storyline at all actually, so I didn't rate the book down for that at all. 5. I enjoyed the epilogue. Seriously the part that I didn't like is maybe 3 pages. 6. I hated Ralph, of course, but Mary was 100 times worse. Seriously, just the shittiest of parents. They actually made me physically angry. Too bad they're just ancillary characters because I'd love to read in-depth on their demise...
After a traumatic incident leaves her wheelchair bound Terri is sent to Camp Cherry Plain also known as Wheelchair Camp. She thought this would be the perfect place to fit in with people just like her.
When she gets there she’s met with terrible councilors and a few stuck up campers. She finds a friend in Tommy, the mysterious bad boy with a pocket knife hidden in his wheelchair.
When one by one campers and councilors begin to get picked off the remaining campers are left to defend themselves and figure out who is killing everyone.
My Thoughts: I loved this one. It reminded me of the movie Sleepaway Camp. I like that I was able to get lost in the plot and care what happens to the characters. This was a good slasher story and I definitely recommend it!
This was my first exposure to Irons' work, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. More than a simple homage to 80s slashers, Don't Go to Wheelchair Camp is a clever remix of familiar tropes and characters. The pacing is brisk and cinematic, designed to be read in as few sittings as possible. The dialogue is quick-witted and often hilarious, delivered by an ensemble of characters you can't help but love or despise. These elements combine to create a story that's simply fun as hell, and I'll definitely be checking out more works from the author.
Don’t go to wheelchair camp: The title says it all.
Terri has guilt about her sister’s fate in the accident she caused. She is negative about her life and immobility situation. Truly, her family is not supportive or caring. Terri wants to find connection/empathy/understanding. When she makes friends at camp, especially with JD, things seem brighter for her. Until a killer rolls into town…
I was really rooting for Tina & Kate aka the only responsible/sane counsellors.
I have to admit, starting this felt like a YA novel with an edge, but ended up as a roller coaster of fun and gore! Loved the retro feel of it, and some spots gave me the giggles of how 'out there' the killings are. I was pleasantly surprised. Kudos to Mr. Irons!
For almost the entire book I was enjoying myself and thought this would end up a solid 3 star... It dropped to 2 stars once a man's head was cut off but he still spoke one final word afterwards. Then it dropped to 1 star when we learned that Tammy and Terri share a body... and then even started to blame Mary as if she wasn't just as much a victim herself.

It wasn’t bad but I do not understand all the 5 star reviews. It was extremely predictable and longer than it needed to be. It’s not that I didn’t like the book I just never had that needful urge to pick it up and continue reading it after taking a break.
What a thrill ride! This 80's slasher inspired work gives you a hot shot of nostalgia while also offering up a unique take on the theme. Sex, drugs, friendship, first love, madness, and mutilation are all here in a fun, fast, fresh read.

I’m honestly not even sure how I came across this book (I think it randomly popped up on kindle unlimited). Either way, I decided to read it because I thought it would be like a corny 80s B movie. I didn’t know how much I would enjoy it, but having just finished it, I exceeded my expectations & I loved it.
Why would Tommy Knox – the kid from juvey – have a knife hidden in his wheelchair? Someone at Wheelchair Camp has a dark secret. One by one, campers and counselors begin to die, and only a handful of the wheelchair-bound kids are left to fend for their lives as a brutal killer stalks them. They should have been warned … They should have been told … Don't go to Wheelchair Camp.
This book had me glued to its pages until the early hours of the morning on more than one occasion. The characters were so well-crafted that I found myself emotionally invested in their story. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and eagerly look forward to any future releases from the author.
The novel, "Don't Go to Camp Wheelchair," is not for the faint of heart. Set in a camp for disabled children, the story delves into the dark events that occurred during the camp's final summer in 1978. Despite the disturbing subject matter, the author manages to weave an engrossing and entertaining tale. From the outset, the characters are clichéd yet captivating, drawing the reader into their improbable situations. While some may find the slasher scenes too gruesome, the author's writing style keeps the reader engaged throughout. The story is filled with plenty of drama, humour, and unexpected twists and turns, culminating in a satisfying conclusion. Overall, "Don't Go to Camp Wheelchair" is a compelling and thrilling read for fans of the horror genre.
This book was an absolute blast!! I had so much fun reading this from start to finish. The story, characters, and setting heavily reminded me of some of my favorite camp slasher movies like Sleepaway Camp and The Burning. The kills were super gory and a ton of fun! I absolutely loved the main group of kids because they were always cracking jokes and roasting each other and that made them feel like a real friend group to me. Speaking of characters, there were some absolutely horrible people in the story but even they were fun to read, in a comic book villain sort of way. One thing I really enjoyed about the author’s writing was how he was able to push the story along without giving away too much at any given point making me want to keep reading and get to the next plot point. This is such an amazing summer camp slasher and I recommend this to anyone who is into the sub genre!!! I can’t wait for the sequel and I’ll definitely be checking out other work from the author in the meantime!
