Can a fantasy about being shared turn into something more? Bowen's about to find out when he gets Mountain topped.
Is there a bigger gay cliché than falling in love with your straight best friend? Oh, I know; a random hookup with a dude from the gym.
I didn't think I'd ever manage to fall for anyone other than the unattainable Hawthorne, but the more time I spend with Aldis the more I… like him.
As for my straight best friend… do straight guys usually stare so much when you're wearing gray sweatpants?
I never thought the drunken admission of my deepest fantasy would lead to the three of us hooking up and Hawthorne looking at me like that. Now my best friend and my hookup-turned-more are bonding over their shared love of mountain climbing, the three of us are, ahem, exploring, and I'm hoping this is more than just a messy fling.
K.M.Neuhold has long since been a romance junkie. When she’s not writing she’s reading or spending time snuggling with her husky or her husband. She fell in love with M/M romance last year and hasn’t been able to turn back. There’s nothing she loves more than love in all its forms.
While this is certainly a very sexy throuple story, it lacks depth and character development.
The three MCs (Howthorne, Bowen, and Aldis) are interchangeable. They all work out; they're built; they're hardcore dudes. Bowen and Aldis are gay. Howthorne is straight until he sees a freshly fucked Bowen, then he's bi.
At the beginning of the story, Howthorne breaks up with his long-term girlfriend and immediately realizes he didn't love her and who cares.
The dialogue is beyond cheesy (especially once the three decide they're in love). If I heard the word "babe" one more time, I was going to scream.
The story exists in a vacuum. There are no secondary characters - not a one - in the entire book, except for a random guy named Rick who says one sentence in the epilogue (oh, and a worker who also says one sentence, also in the epilogue). The MCs don't talk to anyone but themselves. It's just weird.
Aldis has a consulting business, but what he consults people about exactly is anyone's guess. Howthorne and Bowen own a tree service business, but we get exactly one scene with them around wood (and, yes, dick jokes are made).
Everything is bland and boring. Talk about lazy writing.
It starts out like a huge cliché. Fluttering holes, monster cocks that require magnum condoms, dirty talk resembling a prison shower, and so on.
But Aldis, Bowen and Hawthorne are actually pretty decent characters. I was fascinated by a couple of reviews that complained that these three guys live in a bubble and do not communicate with the outside world at all. Which, surprisingly, is true. It's like they're the only people on the planet.
For me, that's not a big deal. I found the characters' emotions and thoughts interesting. The trope is a well-used one, but one that works pretty well for me when it comes to MMM:
Bowen and Hawthorne have been friends since middle school. They own a house and a business together and basically spend their free time together as well. Bowen is gay and hopelessly in love with Hawthorne, but the guy is straight and dates women.
One day, Bowen decides to have a hook up and brings a random guy home from the gym. After having outstanding sex with Bowen, Aldis runs into Hawthorne and quickly notices that there is something going on between Bowen and Hawthorne, but both men are too clumsy to act on it.
Even though he knows that playing matchmaker for them might mean that Aldis will lose his chance with Bowen, he brings the two men together (in a hot tub, yay) and things take a natural course towards a three-way relationship.
The book's title refers to Hawthorne and Aldis' shared hobby of mountain climbing, by the way.
Oh and there are a couple of Golden Girls references, which really touched me, because I will LOVE that show forever.
Definitely an entertaining read. The sex talk goes a bit overboard, but other than that, it's a lovely romance with three committed guys enjoying their threeway love.
Unpopular opinion coming up…. This is the last book I’m going to read from K.M.Neuhold. I keep trying their books, getting sucked up in all the hype & rave reviews from the majority. With this one, I think I read the first 2 chapters and then skimmed the rest. Does that count as a DNF because I skimmed most of it? I think so.
The good: I love me some polyamory, and we get a bit of it in this, and also a few decent sex scenes with hot dirty talk. There’s some funny banter, and no angst. Also, if you like Insta-love & a light & fluffy read, you’ll love this book.
The bad: A lot of the sex scenes were implied & off page! WHY???? Usually at least the first few intimate scenes are on page for story development, but this was so inconsistent. In the context of the development of a polyamorous relationship, the variety of ways the connections between 3 people progresses is one of the main selling points. This was a huge miss.
The ugly: These characters are annoyingly immature. They still speak like college age bros, with so many “dude”s thrown in I wanted to tear my hair out.
Time of death 60%. This was not working for me on any level. I’m not a fan of the “dude bro” characterization of all three MC. No emotional connection. Cringe worthy dialogue and sexy times. They come across as immature frat boys instead of men in their 30s. I don’t know. Maybe it’s my mood, but I just can’t.
Once upon a time, there were two authors that wrote some pretty great books. Books with depth, heart, soul… something you couldn’t wait to read.
Then something changed a year ago, and the quality of writing dropped. The soul was gone. The heart was gone. And it breaks this former fan’s heart.
Then those two authors decide to collab.
And it ends up being the most soulless, trashiest, cringiest, icky dude bro, mediocre trio white boy porn… that ever existed. As I read, I had to keep reminding myself that this is by two popular and seasoned authors. Pretty sure this is one of the worst books I’ve ever read. I want to be mad, but I just don’t care enough about this book to put that much energy in.
What I do care about is these authors taking a step back to reassess their writing, their editors, and alpha readers. I need 2020 and before Neuhold and Monroe back.
1. Aldis is “the d” whisperer (in more than one way). 2. Bowen, Hawthorne, & Aldis are sexy beasts. 3. Lumber-snacks are delicious. 4. This book is loads of fun and will make your heart grow three times as big.
I knew when I read this that I wouldn’t be able to do anything else until I devoured it, which I totally did, but I didn’t expect to be completely and overwhelmingly bowled over by the amount of love I feel for these men. “I didn’t know I could love two people so completely and insanely at the same time.” Exactly that but for me it’s three, I couldn’t help but fall for them all. They’re just so relatable, lovable, likable and all-around cool. I would really love to just hang out with them—but if I could choose the place, I vote hot tub. Tons of swoon, laughs, romance and fire, I’d climb mountains for these men.
A terrific story of three men who find what they need in each other. I loved the flow, the dynamic characters, the heart and anticipation. The M/M and threesome sex is outstanding, scorching hot and deeply emotional, with intense passion. We get excellent ménage, DP, and more. * Bowen, 39, big muscled man, dark hair,
has a crush on his roommate and business partner, straight Hawthorne. They have a tree cutting business. * Hawthorne, 39, is a climber, tattooed and muscled,
who just broke up with his girl, and begins to feel different. * Aldis, late 30s, is ripped, a gym guy, a climber,
and is a happy soul, loves his tech business, and loves sex. Our three guys are successful, and enjoy their lives, and have a zest for good times. Aldis and Bowen pick each other up at the gym, and go to Bowen's for super hot sex. Hawthorne comes home and finds naked Aldis and Bowen after their hot as sin romp. Wow !
Hawthorne feels himself get jealous, and needs to figure out those new emotions. Aldis and Bowen hit it off well, but it's a week before they see each other again. Once again it's scorched sheets. Slowly we see Hawthorne sort his thoughts, and the men do some exploring in the hot tub, with Aldis urging them on. Aldis can see the men's attraction, and wants to help them move forward. It works out well, and then the three get serious about the new feelings each has for the other.
The progression is perfect, and the guys are getting out on adventures, climbing, camping, and more hot-tubbing.
This is a well done ménage story, where we get men who fit together and all have the true passion it takes to make it work. Wonderful ! ENJOY !
What a perfect MMM book by two of my favorite MM authors!! <3 I love a well-written poly book and this one definitely hits the mark. The beginning of Bowen and Aldis is definitely hot AF but then bringing Hawthorne into the mix…total fire. I can’t decide which man I love the most because they are all so lovable and different.
I loved that Aldis was willing to nudge the best friends into something even knowing he could get cut loose from the mix. And Hawthorne’s revelation of why he was jealous was totally on point & perfect.
I was almost disappointed that it had to end…I want more from these guys!!!
MMM Romance/Erotica Best friends/bi-awakening/gym hook up to more HOT 🥵
I’m going to rate this high not for the guys themselves although I loved each of them, not for the best friends to lovers bi awakening, not because of the great communication between them although thanks for that too but because it was fucking hot. I usually like a bit more substance in my romances and while this does have a plot, I stayed for the sex. The hot AF sex. And while I’m on the subject of sex…The thing they do with/to Aldis later on in this book like blew my mind. That’s possible? It just surprised me because I’m an open minded person and I have had friends over the years into all kinds of kink. One of them used to date this guy who brought her to all these sex clubs and she liked to talk about it in detail. A bit TMI but I’ve always been a curious person so I listened when she’d tell me and my big gay bf (that’s what he called himself) all about it. And then from him, I learned even more. My 20’s were an all around eye opening time 😉 But never once was this mentioned and the curious part of me wants to Google it but I’m just going to hopefully distract myself by reading Onley James’ newest book instead.
So yah this rating is superficial AF because I’m only giving it 5 stars for the sex scenes. Lord get me a cold shower and/or fan. 😅😂😂
That was an awesome read, fun, steamy, emotional. Two best friends for life, business partners, sharing an apartment, one straight Hawthorne, one gay Bowen. Bowen had always feelings for Hawthorne. It’s maybe time to move on, he meets a hot guy at the gym, Aldis. They end up in bed at Bowen’. Hawthorne is getting hard listening to the guys having hot sex. Aldis is a gift from heaven, he sees and understands more than Thorne and Bowen can see. Thank you, Aldis!
What Bowen always hoped and fantasized about gets reality. The three of them end up together. Their journey is well written, it all feels mature and natural, the nerves, the doubts, the reluctance, who belongs to who or with who. The anticipation was awesome and palpable. It was a convincingly and pleasantly written story, focused, clearly outlined, sweet, gentle, and super hot.
I wanted to like this one more than I did. And that makes me sad because I like these authors.
The good points: I loved all the characters. They were fully fleshed out and didn't blend together at all. Sometimes with MMM, the characters sort of melt together until I can't tell who's who. That didn't happen here. I liked them all as people and I was fully invested in their relationship. I really liked Aldis's directness, and the organic way the trio developed. And of course the sex was hot as hell.
The not so good points: That's all there was. There was literally no story BUT becoming a throuple. There were no plot points. None of these men had any friends or family outside their little bubble, so none of it felt real. Yes, the sex was hot, and I'm not one to complain about a lot of it. But. That's. All. There. Was. Looooots of sex until they all conveniently fall in love with each other. Like, there's nothing wrong with an awesome sex-fest, but I need a little plot on the side. And there was no plot. None.
So, idk. I don't regret reading it, but it left me feeling very unsatisfied.
I’m usually not into reading about three ways, but this one really worked for me. I enjoyed the slow burn at the beginning of their relationship, and the super hot sex after they finally figured it all out. It’s a sweet low angst story with super hot guys who just click perfectly.
It was so hard for me to remember these guys were almost 40, because they read and spoke like try-hard college-aged dude bros who just decided to jump into bed together. Everything moved way too fast, there was no spark of attraction that could grow, and I felt no connection between the characters. Their relationship was so flat because there wasn't that initial connection or attraction that could grow naturally. After a while Aldis' dialogue and internal thoughts just became quite creepy.
I love Neuhold's books, but oh my god this was painful to read. I definitely don't understand all the high ratings and glowing reviews. This book is just awful.
3 Just-ok stars!! 👍 I love MMM books typically, but this one was a little OTT with the "bro-dude" lingo... 🙄 Bowen, Hawthorne and Aldis are supposed to be in their 30s I think but they all spoke like they were in a fraternity. The relationship build-up was good and I liked how the 3 had some similar and some dissimilar tastes, but it was too sugary-sweet for me. For someone just realizing that he was bisexual, Hawthorne's jump into polyamory seemed a little too easy. Also, they never went deeper into their past, background or families which was kinda strange for people who fell in love so fast and then decided to move in together. Nevertheless, there were a lot of hot, sizzling, threesomes 🔥 🔥💓 and overall the book was a low-angsty read. Highly recommended to all fans of KMN!! 👍👍
While this is certainly my favourite trope -best friends to lovers/GFY- unfortunately, I didn't like the book. It lacks emotional connection, character development and an actual story telling. So it's not for me.
I absolutely loved Bow, Thorne, and Aldis. This one was just pages of good communication, hot sex and good vibes. And surprisingly, there was no angst at all, even though this was a first time throuple.
Seeing each one be shocked, accepting, and then realize that they could love more than one person was awesome. I'm also happy with this being a true poly relationship, where not only were all three were together, but that each couple also had to be happy with each other.
I would love another collaboration with these writers.
From the beginning to 60% I was really satisfied and generally liked the book but... there is a but... All 3 MCs are nearing their 40s? and it really started to bother me how the word 'Dude' and 'Babe' were overused, it ended up really irritating. Babe, Babe, Babe, Dude, Dude, Dude - Surely there are other endearments that could've been used, don't get me wrong, I have no major issues with using 'Dude' or 'Babe' it's just when it's on every other line.
I also found that they seemed to have the same voice and I would generally get confused at who was talking and had to double check who the POV of the chapter. I didn't ever at any point consider to put it down as a DNF but when I started skim reading to the end so I could just be done with it, in the hopes some of the chapter was filler and it would get to the plot but towards there wasn't even much of a plot.
You see, I have a love/hate relationship with instalove and I can read it, if it's done right but this was just a bit cringe by the end; it was rather then having 3 adult 40 year old males who were successful we instead got frat boys. Could've it been better if the 'straight' MC already identified as Bi, Pan, Demi or whatever and then you had the other two MCs - the troupe just falls flat for me and by the end so did the writing. Even the sex scenes got to that point - absolutely fine, no complaints but by the end, it was all the same just MCs in different positions.
I would've rated it higher but the whole dude, babe, fratboy thing kind of ruined it for me. I mean this book will appeal to others as it's fairly low angst, fluffy with steam (to an extent IMHO), there's no obvious triggers
I almost think the polyamorous aspect didn't really hit the mark; I didn't really feel that the MCs had that connection; I have read other MMM/MMF books and you could feel the connection, the affection etc but this like the writing was flat and emotionless.
After reading some more angsty, low steam reads I was looking for something completely opposite. Low angst and high steam. Mountain Topped was recommended to me so thought I’d give it a shot as I also wanted something short and easy to read. This book was actually perfect for the mood I was in!
All three of the MCs had such amazing characteristics and brought different things to the group. I loved how Bowen was kind of the centre that brought them all together. He was incredibly sweet and I loved him! The steam starts immediately once Bowen meets Aldis. Aldis was the key to the whole relationship and I loved his blunt attitude and just going for what he wanted. Hawthorne took a little bit longer to get into the mix but I really liked how he was brought in. It seemed realistic and I liked how their relationship progressed.
With MMM books I have a hard time if the love is not equal between all three or it feels like it’s a couple and they just have a third. That wasn’t an issue for me in this book. I loved that they all had relationships with each other as couples and a solid relationship together as a throuple. Any jealousy that happened was justified and talked through.
If you’re in the mood for a low angst, high heat, MMM romance with great communication then I absolutely recommend this book!
One of these authors and I just don’t mix, so colour me surprised when I didn’t want to DNF after 10mins of reading time. On the whole, I actually enjoyed these three guys. Aldis is the king of communication. He makes sure they sort stuff out and don’t let feelings fester. Their bedroom activities are both hot and fun, with so much flip-fucking a reader could go cross-eyed. I wanted to see where these guys went.
But there was a lot of relationship progression missing. Hawthornes bi-awakening happened in the blink of an eye. And it felt like there was absolutely nothing of substance on the page for the last third. We’re pretty much just told stuff. I was skimming.
Ultimately this romance felt hollow. It’s good for a low angst, fluffy, sex-fest. But not something that has the answers to any deep questions.
This was an amazing book and hot with a capital H. Bowen and Hawthorne are roommates and business partners. Bowen has been in love with his best friend for ages but has not approached him about his feelings. Enter Aldis who meets Bowen at the gym and they get together. With Aldis being introduced, they start to communicate about their feelings. I really enjoyed this book and here’s hoping for more by these authors collaborating.
Can a hot hookup with an Adonis from the gym turn into something so much more than either man expected? Add in a best friend/roommate that overheard said hookup and starts to question how "straight" he actually is. This is a MMM story that is ultimately how three men navigate the waters of polyamory while not even knowing that was what they were looking for all along, without breaking hearts along the way. Plus, the high heat factor that both authors are known for and this easy to read story is one I would recommend. Bowen, Aldis, and Thorne were made for each other.
Light and easy read, but so many feels as two gay and one straight man explore the possibilities of a trio. I’m a total sucker for the “gay-for-you” trope, or in this case, two-of-you. Where labels don’t matter and it’s about following your heart. Ahh the romance of it. This was extremely sweet and sensitive towards all three men’s emotions, making it feel truly complete and connected between all of them.
