Rate this book
Divorce lawyer Clayton Reynolds is a happy cynic who believes in hard work and one-night stands. He also believes that being an excellent lawyer means he never has to go home to the miserable trailer park where he grew up and that volunteering at a women’s shelter will buy off the conscience that occasionally plagues him. So when Nadine Graham comes in with a broken arm and a son she desperately wants to protect, Clayton can’t turn down their plea for help.

Taking the case means appealing to investigator “Just Call Me Kelly” for help. That wouldn’t be so bad if Kelly weren’t a hopeless romantic… and the hottest man Clayton’s ever met.

Kelly has always had a crush on the unobtainable Clayton Reynolds. He agrees to help, even though he has enough on his plate with the motherless baby his widowed brother left him to care for.

As Nadine’s case turns dangerous and the two seemingly opposite men are forced to work together, they discover they have a great deal in common—but solving the case and saving Nadine’s life might cost Kelly everything.

Nope. No no nope..This would have been a 3.5 stars ,even 4 but Kelly’s family were a bunch of psychopaths and Kelly (our MC) was a doormat enabler.. Nobody was punished for all the wacky things they did . The mother and the older brother were absolutely despicable and Kelly deserved the family he got.
1 star for Clayton and the ok-ish writing.

What the F?!

I absolutely hated almost every person in this book. Literally.

First, we have divorce attorney, Clayton. He’s a commitment-phobe, which I kind of get I guess, I mean he hands out divorces all day long. I’d be jaded too if my job was literally the dissolution of love and marriage. So, I kinda get it. Kind of. He’s still pretty jerky in the beginning… BUT, when an abused woman and her five-year-old son come to him for help, he knows he needs additional help from private investigator- Kelly.

Kelly has the most whacked out family. His mom is an enabling psychopath. I didn’t understand her at all, and every compliment she paid Kelly, just seemed backhanded and insincere. His whole family was crazy, though his dad kind of won me over in the end. His brother Byron though was an actual psychopath…. Which is why Kelly had his newborn son, taking care of him until he got over the death of his wife, or whatever. You won’t understand the brother, so go into with the knowledge that you shouldn’t even try… It literally made me sick to my stomach… he’s the equivalent to a serial killer, beats his wife and scares the crap out of his kid…. Gets in with the wrong people, and still…. The mom babies him, makes excuses for him, so do his brothers, and yet…. Nothing happens to him?? Does he even go to jail?? Why did we get no closure from that when the flippin story was halfway all about him!????? Did I just miss that part? I mean, I did skim some, but surely I didn’t miss that part.

So, while the guys are working together to help out the abused woman and her helpless child, I wanted to smack her around for being so stupid, but all the while, the guys are hookin up and fallin in love. Cool right? Except, kind of, but not really, because I didn’t feel any connection between the two at all for the first half of the book and then by the end… they loved each other. I was so out of my element here.

I mean, give me a hot guy with a baby, and I’m all over it! These guys were no different, and I did get into their love story that wasn’t really a love story by the end. I love love love how it ended, but mainly because I wanted Clayton to not be so jaded and bitter, and I knew Kelly could give him that.

I was also glad that they gave the baby some stability instead of the dad he was cursed with. The ending was worth almost all the turmoil because I love me a happily ever after with two hot dads. I just wish the rest of it wasn’t so blood-boiling. I mean… I’m all for a mystery and suspense… but I need closure! I needed the brother to pay with his life, or his freedom or an arm or something…. He laid so much pain and devastation and stupidity in his wake…. I needed the justice, and it never came. I’ll stew on that for days…. Ugh.

Anyway… it was a good story if you don’t mind that sort of thing lol and the love story really was sweet at the end, so I reckon, 3 stars from me. I won’t be reading any more about this family though. They’re all crazy!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

I really enjoyed Every Other Weekend and was pleasantly surprised to find a twisty suspense plot along with this contemporary story. Things start off fairly routine as Clayton gets brought in to help Nadine at the women’s shelter and recruits Kelly to help out with the investigative side of things. But soon things aren’t adding it up, with some suspicious circumstances and unexpected danger, and the guys realize that there are lots of layers to what is really going on with Nadine, her husband, and his business. While I saw the tip of the iceberg coming here fairly early on, things go much deeper and are more twisty than I had expected and the story kept me enthusiastically engaged the entire time as the men dig into what is really happening. So from a suspense end, this is definitely entertaining and the storyline is complex without being overwhelming to follow.

Darum geht's:

More a 2.4
The idea was great: a PI and a lawyer who often work together join forces again to help a woman and her son. Their relationship was always professional but the attraction was there and now they finally act on it. The case of the woman turns out to be much more complicated than anticipated, and some details were intriguing.

However, the romance didn't convince me at all, the protagonists' personalities even less, the case investigated seemed confusing and the writing style was not appealing.
I don't think this author works for me, despite the positive elements.

Bone to Pick wannabe that fails to hit all the right spots.
*You’re about to get two reviews in one.*

TA Moore is hit or miss: I loved her book Bone to Pick, but couldn’t get into Dog Days or Liar, Liar at all. I picked up Every Other Weekend in the hope that it would be similar to Bone to Pick, and it was, kind of.

It’s like she took every point of critique she ever received from anyone regarding Bone to Pick and tried to do better in this story. The result is a softened down, mushy version of an investigation story with characters that are supposed to be damaged and tragic but really aren’t. To give you an idea:

Clayton Reynolds: He is a divorce lawyer with a shitty childhood behind him. A life-long cynic and commitment-phobe who doesn’t believe in love and sneers at anyone who does. Except he isn’t and he doesn’t. He is actually . He does pro bono work for a woman’s shelter, is a goody two-shoes who tries to belie his sentimental nature with words, but never in deeds. In fact, even his shitty childhood is just a nice story line, probably true but without any impact on his behavior as an adult.

His equivalent in Bone to Pick is Javi Merlo, an FBI agent who doesn’t do commitments (for real this time) because it would hinder his career. He is in the closet, ambitious, and such a jerk “it was hard to share his head with himself”. Many readers/reviewers seemed to dislike him for his dick behavior (because he acts like a dick, not just talks like one) and he is truly flawed, not just superficially so, which is exactly why he makes the story so interesting.

Kelly: He is the soft element to Clayton’s sharp, Mack the Knife personality, easy to love and easy with his love. He has a big irish family who isn’t as dandy as they pretend to be. I liked the conflict set up in the family dynamic, unfortunately it never quite comes to fruition. The resolution or the big blow up always hovers on the horizon, and then never happens. In any case, Kelly really just is the nicest bloke and . There isn’t much else to say about him.

Kelly also has an equivalent in Bone to Pick: Cloister Witte. Cloister is a likeable guy, a K9 officer (that means dogs) who isn’t quite handsome. He falls easily (like Kelly) but a tragic childhood has some rough consequences for him in terms of successful relationships and leading a successful life in general (just saying: more trailer parks). We never quite learn everything about his past, but bits and pieces are revealed and move the mystery plot along in subtle ways. Overall, he is a good guy (he is a dog person, whatcha expect?), but not without his sharp edges. He has a tendency to be disrespectful to his superiors and run roughshod over due process. Perfect for a police officer.

The romance: Is basically set and done at the 30% mark. Granted, there are some nitty-gritty details to work out, mainly because both characters claim to be in such unredeemable circumstances and unfit for love. The reader, though, has already figured out their shtick and just waits patiently for Kelly and Clayton to catch up.

Not so much in Bone to Pick: There is no romance, not really. The characters , but they make no promises. Cloister isn’t ready to admit that he needs more, Javi doesn’t even know that he could want more. It’s all kinds of messed up and infuriating and remains unresolved to the very end. The sequel will be out in 2019 and you better believe that I. Just. Cannot. Wait.

This is my main point of contention with Every Other Weekend. It feels like TA Moore really took all the voices to heart that protested the lack of romance in Bone to Pick and now produced a similar romance that is lovey-dovey and somewhere up there in lalaland, where everything turns out to be perfect. Like every other romance ever written. Should have stuck with the bad, the ugly, and the jerks, in my opinion.

The mystery: Not bad, but nothing to write home about. It didn’t really grip me and I also don’t think that it was that involved. I expected more because – and you know what is coming now – the mystery in Bone to Pick was just off the charts. It was twisted, dark, and violent, more so than expected at the start, yet less so than expected at the end. And isn’t that just a perfect reflection of the main characters.

Cuteness factor: In Every Other Weekend it’s the baby, in Bone to Pick it’s the dog. I prefer the dog, honestly. Nothing against Max but Bourneville, police officer on four legs, is just badass.

Overall, it’s an enjoyable read, a bit cloying at times, but to me at least it was disappointing because it’s nowhere near close to my favorite TA Moore novel.

TA Moore’s books have never let me down and I always enjoy them and this one is my favorite so far of hers. This was brilliant. I was not expecting such an awesome mystery.

Others probably may have understood it from the beginning but I did not. I was so clueless but I liked the twist it had. And I enjoyed it so much! I want more!

Kelly wants romance while Clayton is only interested in one night stands but from the beginning they both felt attraction to one another but they couldn’t do anything.

Kelly’s family is big, he has many brothers and all of them are cops, except him. He feels like he let them down and despite them being supportive of him for being gay, they don’t want him to flaunt it to people. They have a weird relationship. He is also the one that mostly takes care of is little nephew.

Clayton wants to help every woman that hasn’t been treated right by their husbands, so when Nadine comes to ask for help, he is ready to do anything for her and her son but Nadine has to be ready to leave her husband.

At the beginning I was like, this is going to be a simple, sit back and relax read but after half of the book when the mystery of what is happening takes a turn, I could not put it down and just got excited.

Review:

I always enjoyed at least some things in this writer's works. I do not remember giving five stars, but I think her books are always worthy of being talked about if that makes sense. I had seen polarizing reviews about her other books, but avoided to look at even the single one before I will finish mine.

First and foremost I found the blurb misleading in more than one way. NO, Kelly and Clayton are not even seemingly opposites - in the beginning Clayton tells us about Kelly being romantic and Clayton seemingly not, but they both work in the same firm (actually, I got a little confused whether Kelly is an employee of the same law firm that Clayton works for, or Kelly just does freelance work for them, but that does not really matter - they interacted quite a bit while working the cases in the past and they have major crushes on one another. Kelly knows that he is crushing on Clayton, Clayton knows that he wants to get in Kelly's pants. Clayton just thinks that Kelly does not do casual and Clayton does not do anything else.

Also Clayton does not have *occasional twinge of consciousness* , he seemed to look and act as really decent man to me - no he did not have to take another pro bono case, his quota of pro bono hours was done for the year, and he did not have to go all that length for Nadine. He had to zealously represent her, but as Kelly said he did not have to offer to pay Kelly his usual rate to work with him, favor or not.

Kelly? Kelly was a sweetheart, and no I am not telling you his first name, you will have to read the book and appreciate the joke. Kelly loves his family, volunteers to babysit his little nephew, while one of his brothers was "not coping" with the death of his wife and also goes on the limb for the pro-bono domestic violence case, which he did not have to help Clayton with at all.

"Clayton was just about to press the bell again when Kelly finally jerked the door open. He was bare-chested and half-asleep, with a baby cradled against one broad, tattooed shoulder as it cat-wailed and fussed. Lust caught in the back of Clayton’s throat and dried his mouth out. But then, that was the thing that irritated Clayton most about Kelly.

He wasn’t Clayton’s type—too short, too muscular, too cheerful, and currently too holding a baby—but he was still the hottest fucking man Clayton had ever seen. It was as though he did it on purpose. He wasn’t even that short, just close enough to average to make his self-deprecating short jokes funny instead of self-hating. “I need a favor,” Clayton said through the sticky hunger on his tongue.

There was a pause as Kelly distractedly bounced the grizzling baby on his shoulder and looked baffled. If Kelly had turned up on Clayton’s doorstep at that time of night, Clayton would have told him to fuck off. So of course Kelly scratched his head, shrugged, and stepped back to wave Clayton into the hall. “Sure,” he said as he patted the baby’s back. “Come in. Sorry about the mess.” Asshole."

I suppose since Clayton talks rough and constantly pretends he is a horrible person and Kelly seemingly has a sunnier disposition that was the reason to describe then as "seemingly opposites"? In any event, everything else was described correctly. Nadine's case turns dangerous very quickly and both Clayton and Kelly are forced to put everything on the line to help her very soon. Things also turned out to be much more complicated than they originally assumed and my review here almost comes to a screeching halt.

There is a *major* spoiler involved in the resolution of this story and the blurb does not even hint at this so there is no way I can talk about it without revealing the spoiler. However I will say this - coincidence that led to the "climax" of the story made me roll my eyes and ask what are the chances that such coincidence would have taken place. Nevertheless how it was resolved - I guess I will call it legal/suspense/police procedural storyline for the most part worked well for me.

Romance worked very well, I firmly believed that Kelly and Clayton were crashing on each other for years and it was about time for them to do something and well, working together gave them a chance to do so. I thought their chemistry was great, I appreciated that the writer even provided some humor in the book that dealt with rather grim subject matter and I hope they would be very happy in the future of that book world when the story ended :)

"“Can you at least watch the baby while I go clean up?” Kelly asked as he secured the last strap and sat back on his heels. “Make sure a wild dog doesn’t burst in and carry Maxie off?” “Why?” Clayton asked as he shifted his attention away from the spread of Kelly’s shoulders.

“Do you have many feral, baby-stealing dog packs roaming the neighborhood?” Kelly gave him a lazy grin. “One would be enough, wouldn’t it?” He gave the baby seat a tap to set it rocking and pushed himself to his feet. “Give me ten minutes.”"

I also wanted to note something about Kelly and his family. They are a little or more than a little dysfunctional and I really wanted to slap most of them silly ( I hesitate to use this expression describing the story that deals with the domestic violence, but that is how I felt and if you read the book or will read the book I think you may understand me).

Grade: B/B+

It's been a while since I've read this author, because they have a tendancy to have approximately 500 series going at once, which they update on an alternating schedule every few years and it drives me mad, especially because each series generally follows one couple and the books end quite tentatively. This being a standalone, however, I felt safe, and it reminded me how much I really do enjoy this author's writing!

Interesting characters with quite distinct POVs, snappy writing, and some fabulously nuanced and complex relationship dynamics across the board. The chemistry between Kelly & Clayton was fabulous, and I really enjoyed the way their relationship evolved and developed. It all felt quite mature, and the obstacles they faced didn't feel overblown. I really liked both of them a lot, separately and together, and Kelly's complex relationships with his family, while sometimes frustrating, felt super authentic and messy and I really enjoyed. The ~mystery~ type plot was interesting and engaging and paired well with the romance, and I just had a lot of fun reading! I did think the ending felt a little rushed and the epilogue was short and sort of random--the weakest part of the novel for me, which is never great when it's the ending as it's the last impression of the book, but overall I thought it was quite strong.

Uptight lawyer is a trope I love, and TAM does a good job here with driven, lonely Clayton. It's left to laid-back PI Kelly to thaw him, in the course of a (potentially) neat plot. Good dialogue, background, secondary characters and set-up.

It all drifts slightly off course, though, in the second half of the book, when the plot gets too complex for the length of book. The relationship (the interesting bit) is side-lined in favour of the investigation, making the eventual HFN a little underwhelming. The ending is cut brutally short, too.
TAM could probably do with a better editor, because there is real potential here.

Absolutely loved it. The only issue I had was they had sex without a condom. I’m not sure if we are supposed to assume that Clayton always suited up with all his one night stands or if he was always going bare and then the whole “I’m clean” means nothing. I had a niggle about Jimmy at the beginning and I was right. He was such a tool. Also, I kind of didn’t like Kelly’s family, well some of them, as they were like Kelly didn’t exist in a way. Didn’t matter what happened to him. At one point he was severely beaten and his mom made no fuss over him. But his dochebag of a brother Byron gets injured and she’s all like oh poor thing and wait on him hand and foot. I’m glad his dad kind of comes around in the end. So anyway the story. Clayton meets this women at and abuse shelter who he does a lot of pro bono work for. He’s a divorce attorney. She is in pretty bad shape and asks for his help. He decides to take the case and enlists Kelly to help him out. When they start digging into her husband, it turns out that he is a bad guy working with other nasty bad guys. There are threats made and beatings and a whole bunch of twists and turns. It’s a very well written book and will be going on my multiple reads list as I will come back to this one. The epilogue was absolutely perfect.

¸.•*¨)☆♡¸.•*´¨)☆♡¸.•*´¨)☆♡
♡☆(¸.•´A simple investigation should have been the end of it.

When an author sets out to entertain, they pour their heart and soul into their words and let the muses take over. "Every Other Weekend" set off in another direction than I had expected. It entertained, it kept me riveted and it increased my fate in writers.

When a one night stand only divorce lawyer and a very Irish private investigator come together to solve a mystery, they bit off more than anticipated. Clayton had had a rough start with life, but he had made his choices and vowed never to go that route again. He took on pro bono cases to appease that slight need in himself to help those less fortunate. For Kelly, "just call me Kelly," Clayton was like catnip. He knew he could never have the man he was crushing one. After all, Clayton was a believer "in hard work and one night stands," and Kelly "didn't do casual."

The romantic suspense portion of this story was well written, and even for this reader, it was an easy follow. Characterizations and secondary characters all fell into place and though the chemistry was there, the main characters did not let it overwhelm them. At times it was a hard read, and I cringed on what was unfolding on the pages, but it was needed to be told to make the story develop even more.

Definite recommendation to anyone who likes MM romantic suspense.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from Dreamspinner Press.

The dichotomy between a divorce lawyer with a horrible childhood who doesn’t do commitment of any kind and the PI (who has his own family troubles) who’s a hopeless romantic was simply too much to pass on. Throw in suspense, betrayal, a battered mom and her young son, and ‘Every Other Weekend’ became everything I’ve begun to expect from this author. The writing is crisp, sharp, and on-point, while the story held me captivated.

I couldn’t blame Clayton for his attitude, certainly not after I understood more about his childhood and his mother, and I gave him kudos for all of the pro bono work he does. He is more compassionate than he wants anyone to know underneath his very prickly exterior. Kelly is a romantic but he’s not gullible and he has endured his share of pain. He’s the youngest of seven sons (Irish Catholic) and his brothers are all members of the LAPD in one fashion or another. Kelly is the only one who isn’t a cop although the reason is more than valid and had me feeling not so generous towards his parents and a few of his brothers.

It was a 2.5/5 for almost all of it but the ending was so sweet that I had to bump it up to a 3.

This is my favorite TA Moore book. It actually ranks up as a favorite book all around at that point. I loved it. I don't give a lot 5 stars, but this one gets one from me. Why do I love this book? Well, it's got a lawyer, an investigator, a baby, a mystery, and the story moves along nicely! I loved that I did not see the twist coming as I usually do.

Kelly and Clayton are likable, and just fit together. I also loved Baker (maybe a bit of bias there with the name!) and a follow up with him would be cool. I often find my disbelief stretched a bit when reading mysteries, and this one was okay. Nothing jumped out in my face and made me yell out loud in annoyance. I've seen parents like Kelly's so that also did not leave me going no way, although the first time I ran into it (or similar anyway) in real life, it did.

I was given this as an ARC in exchange for a review. Thank you TA!

Oh man, I absolutely adored this book.

Clayton is a rich, successful divorce lawyer with a heart of gold - he takes his share of pro bono cases and really, he’s bit of a softie. Sometimes he’s assisted by Kelly, a private investigator who just happens to be handsome and gay and pretty much the man of Clayton’s dreams. But Clayton doesn’t do relationships and Kelly doesn’t do casual. Until a case comes along that brings trouble for both men and it gets them looking at each other in a different light.

I loved this so MUCH. The heroes both felt authentic and the way their relationship grew was so sweet and...effortless. The main plot was fun and exciting and had just enough suspense to keep it going. There’s a baby, family drama and a whole brood of guys named after Romantic poets - there’s nothing I didn’t like about all of this!
