The Beacon Hill Sorcerer #1

The Necromancer's Dance

Rate this book
The bestselling international hit begins with The Necromancer's Dance...

In a world where magic is real and evil walks amongst humanity, a young sorcerer is beset upon by enemies, both old and new.

Angelus Salvatore is the only necromancer in all of Boston, and his name is whispered warily by the undead and fellow sorcerers alike. He and his brother Isaac are the lone survivors of an attack by an army of the undead, in which Angel used a spell so powerful it forever marked his place in history. Now, years later, Angel struggles to balance his career as a teacher of the higher magical arts, his role as big brother, and a tenuous relationship with an Elder vampire from the local clan. When his brother's boyfriend is used as a pawn in a mysterious plot to draw Angel out, Angel is once again drawn back into the old hostilities that fueled the Blood Wars and led to his family's death.

Leaning on others for help is something Angel cannot do, and while he searches for clues into who may be targeting him and his brother, Angel finds his heart steadily growing occupied with Simeon, Elder and vampire. Dealing with death magic and vampires on a daily basis may leave Angel jaded when it comes to life and staying that way, but the more time he spends fending off the ancient vampire's attention and affections, the more he realizes he wants to give in.

Can Angel find out who wants him dead, and keep his heart safe in the process? How can he fall for a vampire, when his whole family was torn apart by an army of the undead?

Death stalks the streets of Boston's historic Beacon Hill....and there is no one more suited to battle against death than a necromancer.

Forth re-read: 03.08.2021
When I re-read the author's The Wolfkin Saga series, I decided I needed to re-read this series as well. Angel and Simeon are very good together after all.

Third re-read: 14.04.2020
I just needed some Simeon and Angel, so I skimmed everything that didn't center the couple.

Second re-read: 16.11.2019
I decided to do yet another re-read of this book/series as to be up to date when I start book 4 for the first time. On thing I noticed more this time around was the insta-love, without being insta. You see, Angel and Simeon has known each other for 2 years, but that was just polite meetings. Then it takes 2-4 days into the story (after the 2 years) for the love part to start. Strange how I didn't notice it before.... That being said, this was a quick re-read; meaning I skimmed some parts as I just re-read it couple of months ago.

Re-read: 01.07.2019
I still like it. Hell, I actually think I like it a bit more than I did the first time read it. Simeon and Angel are absolutely adorable together. I had forgotten how much I did like this book. I highly recommend everyone reading this one, and S.J. Himes The Wolfkin Saga series. It's two great, yet different series that is definitely worth your time. As I shamely hadn't remember what precisely happened in this book, it was almost like reading it for the first time. Hopefully, I'll enjoyed the re-read of the #2 book in the series just as much. Also, I added the characters list as it bothered me that I couldn't remember them.

Other Characters:
Isaac Salvatore (23), Angel's little brother. A sorcerer, just like Angel, and his affinity is for fire.
Dame Mildred ‘Milly’ Fontaine (anywhere from her early 40s to 60s), Angel's teaching partner and friend.
→ Detective Grant Collins and his partner, detective James O’Malley. The Collins hates the Salvatores, most of them are in the BPD. The Collins are related to the Macavoys, the family that led the Salvatore's enemies in the Blood Wars. Most of the Macavoys went to prison, but the head of the family Leicaster Macavoy, and his son Daniel (only 10 or so at the time) only got was a slap on the wrist for not controlling his people better.
Gregory ‘Greg’ Doyle, Isaac's best friend and sometimes lover.
Samuel and Mark Serfano were twenty and twenty-one , students of Angel.
August Remington, a sorcerer and Angel's old mentor and his father’s best friend. Dead.
Raine Salvatore, Angel's father who was the premier instructor of high sorcery in all of the Northeast. He and most of the family was attacked and killed by an army of the undead many years before (10 years ago? 11?). Angel and his brother Isaac are the lone survivors after Angel cast a spell that killed all the undead and set the street on fire.
Constantine Batiste (1000), the Master of Boston. Simeon is his oldest child.
→ Elder Etienne Gaston, Simeon's colleague. The Master of Boston only had two Elders, while most Masters of a city had several, sometimes up to a dozen. Etienne was one and Simeon the other. .
William Bridgerton, lately of Atlanta, newest clan member. Once he was accepted into Batiste's clan, he said he was challenging for a position as Elder.

First read review:
I'm feeling a bit uncertain of my feelings towards this book. I liked it - a lot - but yet it was nowhere near ‘love it’. I liked the characters; only necromancer in all of Boston Angelus ‘Angel’ ‘Angie’ ‘Sorcerer Salvatore’ Salvatore (30) and Elder of the only vampire Bloodclan in the city, Simeon ‘Celt’ (over 400 years old). They were so adorable together, even before Angel really started to let Simeon in. Though, I still felt like we didn't really get to know Simeon. Which is probably a bit of the problem here.
Even when his life was full of danger and death and old rivalries, he was happy. He couldn’t recall the last time he was happy. Angel was nearly asleep when Simeon startled, moving his legs. Angel heard a reproachful chirp from under the blankets and smiled, just before he fell asleep.

But I loved that there was NO insta-love, as the characters met 2 years ago, but I still wanted something more. I wonder if the series continues with Angel and Simeon's story, or if the story continues with Angel's brother, Isaac Salvatore (23). I'm not sure if I want to continue if it's the latter... Overall, it was a cool read, which surprised me. Though there was a bit of a information overload...
“I have lived four hundred years, my love. Two years to earn your trust was a price I was more than willing to pay.”

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Paranormal Romance (M/M)
Series: - Series, Book One.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Simeon ‘Celt’.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Sure.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Sure.
Will I read this again in the future? - Who knows.
Rating - 3.5/4 stars.

“Angelus Salvatore, I lost my heart to you the moment you threatened my life. So brave, so capable and enticing.” Simeon replied, a smile lifting a corner of his mouth, a shiny fang glinting. “I meant what I said earlier, as well. I have lived a very long time, and two years were nothing to wait when the prize was your heart in return.”

On an objective level, and if I were to rate this for the elements that make up the story only, the story is an enjoyable one. It has enough promising features, factors that bring in a lot of potential, a great cast of characters, a promising romance, and enough of a magic system build up used to add a fun addition to the story. But when I think about how much these factors are actually developing the story, I can’t help but be disappointed. I must say though, I am very excited to read the rest of the series, see a development process between Angel and Simeon, hopefully grow some love for Isaac and see a building relationship between him and Master Batiste, and get to meet Daniel more and his future lover, Rory.

I think where this story really shines is through the characterization of Angel. Angel isn’t a presumptuous asshole, but he is strikingly confident, acknowledging his powers and good qualities, all while keeping himself in check and not showing off in a demeaning way. His character is refreshing, a unique character than other similar characters I’ve met. He’s a necromancer, and a very good one at what he does. He’s knowledgeable and not insecure; he’s afraid but not doubtful; he’s a risk taker but a logical thinker. S.J. Himes, now writing as Sheena Jolie, wrote him superbly, never undermining his character to fake flaws, unnecessary galore, and a revolting personality. Instead, Angel is a person of his own, sticking to what he knows without abrasives. I loved how Angel knew who he was, acknowledged his powers and abilities, and used them for the best.

However, my issues with this lie in everything else the novel was supposed to offer but didn’t: the romance, world-building, and characterization of Simeon.

His lover, Simeon, an Irish 400-year-old Elder Vampire, is of a silky quality: posh and elegant, confident, strikingly sexy, and enamored, Simeon wants Angel and isn’t afraid to show it. He’s caring, patient, and lovable, but he’s also his own part of strong and vulnerable. We don’t know much about him, unfortunately, other than his role with the Bloodclan, he’s an old vampire, he‘s Celtic, and of course, his ancestry is related to the brutal history with Angel. I mean, I’m sure there is more to him, but to me it felt like we only got an idea of who he is, both as an individual and lover. He’s such an admirer though, especially to Angel, which I did really enjoy, but I wasn’t rooting for it much.

Most of it all comes down to relationship development. Or lack thereof, I should say. While romance is not the biggest focus of this book and series, it is still integral and makes up a big chunk of the story. I’ve been in a romance slump lately, and I thought fantasy/paranormal romance was the way to get back into it a little more, so I thought giving this series a chance would be the right choice. However, it’s my second chance, and it reminded me why I gave up on it the first time I started it. From how I saw it, the relationship between Angel and Simeon felt like it was something we are thrown into the middle of. The author tries adding tension into it, but what they were missing was showing us a lot of these feelings unfolding. Instead, we are told that Simeon has waited two years for Angel, from the moment they met to the present, yet their relationship is fairly…instant. Angel, too, found Simeon attractive since he met him (and I mean, I don’t blame him). However, as previously mentioned, we don’t actually see the two years or many moments between the two. Instead, we are told, and then it’s as if we just jump into the attraction these two decide to give into. There’s really no development, and while the tension is slowly simmering in the background, it isn’t enough to make me believe in it. Perhaps if there was a prequel novella or flashbacks where we see Angel and Simeon interacting, building UST, and pushing/pulling their feelings, I would have been able to understand the relationship more. Plus, any type of relationship where the characters say they have waited x amount of years or time for the other is something I love reading about because it has a lot of potential for yearning and longing. So the fact that we didn’t see this was very…disappointing. It has the spark, but it’s not fully there, and it’s not because it’s not fully developed or because the relationship is still growing; it’s because the relationship never really started from the beginning to start with. Plus, Angel and Simeon haven’t actually interacted before besides the first time they met, so it’s hard to even imagine a prequel or more moments between them before they see each other again. I mean, 20% in or so and they already kissed… So yeah, definitely not slow burn, sadly.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s quite a lot to like about these two already. Simeon is very set on Angel, and there’s no stopping his attraction from being made clear. He’s set in, unwilling to give up but still waiting for the right time. He’s incredibly patient and kind, sexy, and extremely charming. Of course, he’s possessive, and I love it. I LOVE it when characters are from different countries/ethnicities and speak different languages, and I love it even more when we actually see them speaking to them, calling their lover certain terms. Simeon’s endearments for Angel only add to the fuel, like his endearments mo ghrá and lennán. Really, I’m a simple girl.

The world-building is lacking a little bit. I thought it needed more background on explaining more historical context, more information on the Salvatore clan, more references to Angel’s intense magic, and more necessary build-up to get the gist of where everything and everyone came from. We know that humans and magical users and creatures live together and separately, but we don’t really know why and how this all came to be. We get brief mentions and backstories on events, such as the Blood Wars, or how the Salvatore Clan (Angel’s family) was the strongest, or context on how Angel is responsible for some of the most brutal kills during the war. Yet, I think we were still missing enough details to know more about the background. I’m hoping we learn more about Angel and Simeon, or at least Angel, in the next book(s).

So yes, while I am disappointed with this first installment, I am excited to see where the rest take us. I know many people aren’t fans of couples getting together in the first books because there’s no room for build-up or more sexual tension, but I don’t mind it as long as the romance is enough to root for. I think there is still room left for the two to grow together, especially as Angel isn’t yet set on the whole I-love-you for Simeon, despite being close to feeling it. They’re together, but they’re not promised to each other or anything, so I’m hoping the author continues building up their tension. I also heard these two don’t play games in the next books, so I’m all here for future communication.

“I suck at interpersonal relationships. My brother hates me, who by the way I need to make sure is still alive, and I have one friend. My students all think I’m an asshole, and they’d be right. I’ve never had a relationship that lasted longer than an exchange of top versus bottom, and I don’t know what I’m doing,” Angel said, holding onto Simeon’s wrists with both hands.
“Neither do I, Angel. I’ve never been in love before.”
“Then we’re the blind leading the blind?”
“I prefer to think of it as finding our way together.”
“I will say I told you so if this goes sideways.”
Simeon smiled at him and pressed a kiss to his forehead. “I have faith in us, Leannán.”

This was a thoroughly enjoyable urban fantasy romp, told through an exciting, fresh, and well-executed plot line, and featuring an intriguing cast of supernatural characters, all of whom I was captivated and delighted by.

The Necromancer's Dance tells the story of a powerful young sorcerer named Angelus ‘Angel’ Salvatore who lives in Boston and works as a teacher to young people learning to expand and control their magical abilities. As the only necromancer left in Boston, Angel is both revered and reviled by many within the supernatural community for the part he played ten years ago in ending the blood wars between his family and a coven of vampires – a battle which ended in a bloodbath, with only Angel and his younger brother Isaac left alive.

When this story begins, Angel is in a constant state of exhaustion having worked himself ragged teaching the magical arts by day and assisting members of the supernatural community with magic related problems by night. He’s got too much on his mystical plate, and not only does he close himself off from forming significant relationships with others, but his relationship with his younger brother is strained and uncertain.

To make matters worse, it seems someone is out to kill Angel when he is set upon by a demon who has been summoned from another dimension and is being controlled by an unknown third party. Seeing as the cops are as good as useless, Angel finds himself relying on the assistance of a trusted local vampire elder named Simeon, who is ready to help and who it seems is suddenly eager to put the moves on Angel after two years of respectful acquaintanceship, much to Angel’s equal delight and trepidation.

Simeon is not only devastatingly gorgeous and charming, but he’s also powerful and well-respected in the supernatural community of Boston, proving to be both a great ally in Angel’s corner and a hazard to his hesitant heart. Together they must seek out and face down the pressing threat to Angel’s life, all while their undeniable connection grows too strong for Angel to resist.

I loved Angel and Simeon together. It seems that redheaded Irish vampires just do it for me. Simeon was seriously one dreamy ass vamp MC. I went positively gaga over this guy. His passion and adoration for Angel was just wonderful to witness, especially when it was revealed that he’d been holding himself back for years while he waited patiently for Angel to be ready for his significant advances. In the end, Angel barely fights his feelings for Simeon, knowing that what he feels for the vampire may seem wrong (given his past) but is so very right. Their relationship progression was fairly quick, but given their backstory I was okay with the pace and swiftness of all the romance and passion. In fact, this story had next to no relationship angst and I really appreciated that – it worked perfectly within this setting and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.

The mystery/suspense element of this story kept me intrigued too, with lots of twists and turns right up until the exciting final showdown.

Needless to say, I enjoyed the hell out of this one and I look forward to continuing on with the supernatural adventures of Angel, Simeon, and their friends and family.

Re-read (#2): February, 2024

Even better a second time around. I absolutely adore Angel and Simeon, especially all these years later, knowing what their larger story holds in store for them and their friends.

I decided to re-read on a whim because my anticipation for the fast approaching sixth book in the series sparked fond memories and renewed excitement for this world and these characters I’ve enjoyed so much over the past 7 years.

I may read a lot of M/M and a lot of fantasy, but this still remains one of my absolute favourite series to date.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ❤️

Reread April 2021

Still love it.

Reread November 2018

I think I love these two more every time I read this series.

Reread May 2018

I do love this series and I am anxiously waiting for the next one that HOPEFULLY is coming out soon. I want a Simeon of my own though...

Well, after being in a reading slump for several days, I decided to give this book a go. As with Himes' Wolfkin series, I was immediately drawn in. I mentioned in an update that I think S.J. Himes is a goddess. She has a gift of drawing you in and keeping you engaged. Needless to say, I stalk her every chance I get.

Angel is an anomaly, a necromancer, in Boston. The Boston PD has it in for him, and he has a tenuous working relationship with the local vampire clan. However, there is one hot, Celtic vampire who has decided he wants Angel for his own. But Simeon is taking his time, slowly earning Angel's trust.
“I have lived four hundred years, my love. Two years to earn your trust was a price I was more than willing to pay.”~Simeon

But someone is out to get Angel. They're determined to see him dead. He must work with the vampires and his new lover to find out who keeps sending demons and demented vamps after him before he ends up dead.

As I said, this book pulled me out of a slump. It was sweet...Simeon, oh man, he was so sweet and hot. Who wouldn't want a vampire like that. And I loved Angel. He was so strong and protective of those he loves. He and his brother have been dealt a shitty hand and he could have easily taken it out on the vampires and others but he chose not to. I adore his character.

If I had a complaint, it would be I wish there had been more couple time for Angel and Simeon but I'm looking forward to book 2 and hopefully will get my fill there.

Yet another re-read so I’m ready for The Necromancer’s War.

Re-read 11h - 13th September 2022

Re-read 4th - 6th March 2021

I just love this series but then I suppose that’s obvious by the number of re-reads.

Re-read 1st - 2nd January 2019
With the fourth book Mastering the Flames on the horizon I thought I’d do another re-read.

Re-read 29th May - 30th May.

I think I enjoyed this even more the second time round.

Original review.

Having just read Wolves of the Black Pine and Wolf of the Northern Star and being stunned by the beauty of these books and just how much I enjoyed them. I was less impressed with the wait I now have until the next book is released and so I decided to check out other books by this author.

Angel Salvatore is a necromancer, the only necromancer in Boston and after ending the Blood Wars (a generations long war between the clans) by decimating an army of vampiric assassins he has a certain notoriety.
Some people fear him, some are intrigued by him but all are wary especially since no one has any idea how he did what he did.

Angel and his younger brother Issac are the only surviving members of the great Salvatore family and while Issac has rebelled Angel tries his best to hold his remaining family together.
He has an understanding with the local vampire clan and a so far unacknowledged attraction to the vampire elder Simeon.

Angel is a fabulous character, he’s powerful but flawed with a huge heart and carries the bad hand he’s been dealt very well.
Simeon. I love Simeon he wanted Angel from the first time they met but knew he had to take his time and handle it right and after all what is a couple of years to a 400 year old vampire?

Now years after the end of Blood Wars Angel is being targeted and he’s no idea why.

This is another fabulous read and as soon as I’ve finished this review I’m moving straight onto the next one.
If I was pushed to find a fault I would have liked more of Simeon and Angel together but hopefully I’ll get that in the next book.

It was a good start, even though there were some rocky moments. The world of magic is cool and interesting. Demons are actually space aliens, magical creatures have blood that poisons vampires, and our hero is a powerful necromancer.

Oh, I'm invited to the necromancer party? Um, I think I'm busy that day. Oh, you didn't tell me what day it is? Yeah, well... oh, that's my phone. Gotta go! It's on vibrate.

Dodged that bullet.
Okay, so our hero is named Angel and that was hard for me because I didn't want to pronounce it in my head as angel - like a celestial being. But, I feel like a tool when I use a name with a fake accent like an-hell, which is how I'm pretty sure it should be pronounced. Why couldn't his name just be Bob. Nobody, I mean nobody mispronounces Bob.

See? Everyone read that without any problem pronouncing Bob's name. Be like Bob's mom.

Angel has an agreement to live in peace with the local vampire group and he sometimes helps them with magic issues. The book starts with him going to help because his brother's dumbass friend decided to rob the most powerful ancient vampires in the city. Yeah, dumbass. When Angel goes to fix the situation he runs across his vampire love-interest, Simeon. Why not just name him Simon? Because Angel's name isn't Bob. I personally would have been fine with Bob and Simon, but nobody asked me. People really should ask me before naming things. I rock at it. I had a bunny named Commander Bun Bun and a dog named Mr. Fluffy Pants. See? Rockin' it!

I should get a llama.

As things go on we realize that Bob and Simon have the feelings for each other and it's pretty adorable. We also realize that Bob's life is in danger. Probably because someone took offense at having to pronounce his name with a douchy accent. So, you know - justified! After this we are unraveling the mystery of who hates Bob's name. It was fun!

Ooh, I see. It's the guy who has to pick up the cones. He totally did it!

The reason I didn't give it all the stars was because there was a little too much redundancy in explaining the magic of this world. It really only needed to be explained once for most of us to get it. Twice was a little much. And, the amount of times it was done in this book was overkill. It needed a good editing pen to go through it. However, it is a first book. I give a lot of leeway for that and my skimming skills are good so it wasn't too bad. Overall it was worth a little too much infodumping and I look forward to continuing the series.

Absolutely, 100% loved this book. This book cemented itself in my mind, heart, soul, everything that makes a reader fall in love with books. I've already re-read it the same year I first read it and the author now has a life-long fan. Seriously, loved it that much. Officially in my top five favorite series.

Angel Salvatore has it tough - his family was brutally slain in a cultural sorcerer war ten years ago. He's picked up the pieces and focuses his life on training budding sorcerers. HIs brother Isaac keeps him busy by constantly getting into trouble and mentally slipping. Top it off, as the only Necromancer in Boston and with a reputation that makes vampires look to him like he's a modern day boogeyman, he has caught the eye of a power elder who considers him his intended soulmate. Angel must figure out who is suddenly trying to kill him and those he loves, what's going on with the increasingly hostile police force that held loyalties with the clan who opposed his family, and figure out his new relationship all in one boat. Fun times.

The plot is fierce and doesn't let up. So much is going on to keep me fascinated. I could gush on about the plot being what makes this book so great - and it really is a great story - but the main winner is the actual relationship between Angel and Simeon. Both men are fascinating and their relationship is one of my favorite fictional pairings, ever. It's steamy, it's special, it's exciting, it's fresh. Seriously, they rock together as they solve mysteries, stand up to Master vampires, figure each other out, and complete each other. Bravo.

They're not the only special ones riding this boat, either. I loved the Master of the Clan, the troubled and unstable brother Isaac, the vulnerable victims involved in the war who we find at the end, the villains (crafty surprise twist there!), the police force politics, the newcomer Elder who wants to position in the city, Angel's business partner who has sass and class. I loved the background history of the family and sorcerer wars, seeing the outcome of a man who was part of a ruling force in a city that was destroyed ten years ago. Despite troubled history there is NO angst weighing it down, not something easy to do but done well here.

Throw in that Angel is a unique necromancer and you have yet another win for this book. The wins keep coming. S.J. Himes made such a unique world with socerery and classes. The way they dive into the otherworld and get their power is intriguing. I wasn't bored with any detail, aspect or piece of this book. All the stars. Wish I could award it more than five.

With fast pacing, creative world-building, a romantic relationship that melts my heart, all characters being fascinating, a morbid mystery, some stand-out scenes, an intriguing magic abilities and sorcery - I cannot recommend this one highly enough.

4 Stars!

Wow. I admit I didn’t have very high expectations going into this, but I have to say that this was pretty darn good urban/paranormal fantasy. Full of rich world building, great characters, and incorporating many elements we’ve all read before - sorcery and vampires and demons abound, as well as the lovely obtuse politics and power plays that are often prominent among such supernaturals. Just color me impressed!

Angelus is a necromancer, and a very powerful one at that. Revered and feared among both magical and vampire alike, he decimated over a 100 vamps who were bespelled to kill his entire family, leaving him and his brother the lone survivors of the devastating attack. It’s years later, and he just wants to be left in peace, but there’s many who won’t let things go. As Angelus tries to figure out who is behind the multiple attempts on his life, his acquaintance with the local elder vampire, Simeon, develops into something much more than he ever anticipated. These two are an unlikely pair, but once Simeon makes his feelings known, their relationship progresses quickly but not too implausibly. Of course, things are never that easy.

This definitely brought me back to the days when I gobbled up M/F urban and paranormal fantasy (just slightly reminiscent of Anita Blake, minus the multiple bed partners so far), and it was refreshing to get it from a male protagonist’s point of view, as is my reaction with all M/M that I read. I wasn’t bored once, and this was surprisingly quite smexy!! Bonus points!!

As an aside, I listened to the narration of this book, and it was the first for me by Joel Leslie. This narrator has a ton of books under his belt (over 50) and obviously, probably, is quite popular. However, it took me a long time to acclimate to his voice and to me, his over the top Bostonian and Irish accents. Though I will definitely read the sequel to this series, my foray into this narrator will take a little more consideration.

Thanks to the author/publisher for the audio in exchange for a honest review

Where have I been and why hasn’t it been Beacon Hill?? Gahhhh! This story slipped in and swept me away. I’m not only new to Beacon Hill but I’m new to S.J. Himes. A double whammy of goodness. This was a gift (thank you, thank you!!) that plucked me out of a reading slump and gave me that coveted book itch…I want to know what happens next, I want more Angel and Simeon, I NEED moar! PNR has always been my first love and I haven’t been this excited about a ‘supernat’ story in a long time.
So, here’s the scoop…Angel is a necromancer or a black magician. He possesses special powers and wields them with grace and finesse. His entire family was slain by vampires years ago, leaving only himself and his brother, Isaac. His skills are not only coveted but feared by many. He’s an independent contractor of sorts and lends his unique expertise to a local clan of vampires. Unbeknownst to him, the Elder Simeon has been courting him for the past two years. And when he storms into their place radiating fury and impatience he inadvertently ignites a spark with Simeon he’s unprepared for. Get ready to burn baby burn, in the best way!

What's to like: There’s an intriguing mystery that lures you into the dark straightaway. What’s going on with this Greg fella and who is this sexy vampire Simeon? Why is Angel at their beck and call? And who hexed who? Why so much tension? Emotions far beyond my initial grasp bombarded me. I tried to place all the pieces as they flew in every direction but it took me a bit to lay a solid foundation. It was never information overload but a giddy eagerness to collect as many pieces as possible. The romance begins with a flash here and a burst here. My heart picked up with every kiss, every smoldering stare. When they connected, I thought I might burst from spontaneous combustion. So. Hot. But it wasn’t just their feral lovemaking but the deep passion that accompanied each and every touch. Love isn’t always…familiar. Sometimes it’s foreign and frightening. Witnessing them come together was enchanting. Which takes me to…

What's to love: Angel hasn’t been gifted with an abundance of love in his life. Orphaned and bound to care for his younger brother has forced him to grow up quickly. Mourning his family wasn’t conducive because he had to study, train, and raise Isaac. No time to date, let alone have a boyfriend. When Simeon glides into his personal space, he is entranced yet perplexed. How will he know if he loves Simeon? It’s clear the powerful vampire loves him but what if he cannot return his affections? The concept is obvious but what about the motives and ramifications? Angel has always had to look out for himself but suddenly, he craves the security and comfort Simeon offers. I was anxious, excited and on the edge of my seat…what more can you ask for? A continuation of their story? YES PLEASE!!!

Beware of: Naturally, there’s bloodshed, so if you’re squeamish, beware. Supernaturals always lead to extraordinary events and sometimes wee beasties. And pure love, in which heartbeats (or lack thereof) ante up the ultimate price, is guaranteed to take your breath away.

This book is for: If bloodsuckers and powerful magicians make your blood race, this euphoric ride is bound to sate your cravings…and leave you begging for more!

The had potential, but it had some editing issues. Wrong words, missing words, awkward sentences.

I liked the idea of the story though. What I didn't like is that I felt like I missed all the relationship growth between Simeon and Angel. The story starts after they've know each other a couple of years, and we skipped any real development straight into love declarations. I wanted to see them getting to know each other.

If you look at this as more of an urban fantasy story, rather than a romance, you'll probably get more out of it.

DNF at 48%

When I DNF two books in a row I feel like such a jaded reader. But I promised myself I wouldn’t continue with books that I feel are just okay. I would have probably ended up giving this book 3 stars, and that’s not bad at all. But since I’ve been reading a lot of 3 star books lately, I decided to quit while I’m ahead. My free time is way too valuable to me to endure 2 or 3 more hours with a book I think is only okay.

And me not liking this book is entirely my own fault since I’m not a fan of urban fantasy. I thought I’d give this series a shot anyway.

And while I did like Angel, I wasn’t interested in the rest of the story. The romance wasn’t quite what I expected, and while I did like Simeon, I felt as if there just wasn’t enough time for the romance to develop naturally. There were just so many other things going on that the romance took a backseat. I know that’s common in urban fantasy, but I have to be interested in the rest of the story to be okay with that. And I just wasn’t.

What an amazing series this is. I binge read all three books because once I started l just could not put them down. Himes has such a way with words, it's just phenomenal. The world building is spectacular, fascinating and days after finishing the the third book I'm still thinking about them.

Angel and Simeon are perfect for each other, both badasses in their own right but together .... a force to be reckoned with.

Brilliant story ✓
Fabulous characters and side characters ✓
Spectacular world building ✓
Twists and turns galore ✓

I didn't think much could equal Himes' Wolfkin series, but the Necromancer series sure does. I bloody LOVED it

I'm sucker for books with magic content. If I were to choose a favorite genre, it would be fantasy. I love reading books about things out of the ordinary. This book has everything from sorcerers, to vampires, to little, cute dragons :) So it gets 5 stars from me.

I’m upping my rating to 4 Stars. I enjoyed this book a lot more. What I said in my original reviews still holds true, but I had a better time reading it and that counts for something! I can’t wait to listen to the next one in audio!

ORIGINAL REVIEW: March 10, 2017....

3.5 Stars. Enjoyable read, but wanting more depth of character.

I enjoyed reading the Necromancer's Dance, my first read by this author. I liked the world building that included a large supernatural population.

I found both MCs very likeable. Angel, the necromancer, had depth to his character, although not as much as I typically like in my MCs. Simeon, the elder vampire, was a much more shallower character. All I got from him was that he was a nice vampire in love with Angel. I thought that there should have been a little more challenge and conflict in the two characters getting together than was portrayed in the book.

I will, however, continue on to the next book, because I want to get to know the characters better and I enjoyed the story.

I love this series! This power couple is one of my favorite! Simeon and Angel are mates but their relationship is written in such a way that allows for feelings to develop, the edges to be smoothed out. The shenanigans they get up to are thrilling, adventurous with a side dish of humorous sarcasm sprinkled with magic. I love side characters - Dame Mildred Fontaine is just that shade of awesome that you need in the story like this! Kicka$$ witch with mothering instincts and great cooking skills!

The mystery about the vampire clan and its hierarchy is fascinating, all the comings and goings, and well, the Master himself is one of the reasons that makes this read great! Lets add inexperienced apprentice, a deranged rogue vampire hell-bent on murder and familiar dragon with penchant for purring and pigeons and it's a complete satisfaction guaranteed!!! On to the next one, again! *smiles contagiously*

*****************************************************************************

It's actually the second time I read this book. It's that awesome. The writing is very good, the information about magic and different artifacts and magical objects is well-thought and makes the book stand out. The relationship between Simeon and Angel is written without all that syrupy sweetness that sometimes just ruins the entire book. There is enough romance and pretty words to satisfy the incurable love seekers and enough steam to make the book piping hot. There is enough angst and personal soul searching, as well as well developed side characters that make the book a complete masterpiece. I loved it the first time reading, I love it now! A great read, and wonderful time spent.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold the phone. This is a supernatural story available on Kindle Unlimited, and it doesn't blow.

I really, really liked this. I liked that Angel was realistically bad ass. He wasn't one of those guys that everyone is fawning over, but the dude could hold his own and was vicious in his resolve. I liked that Simeon was the same way: awesome, but not unrealistic. Even for a vampire...? Heh.

**3.5 stars**

Still on my journey to look out at fantasy MM romances to tickle my imagination which is sometimes furiously lacking.
Well, it seems that I have quite an interest when magic is involved, less so when it comes to vampires - to the exception of my beloved Inigo from Bloodline who anyway seems not to be a typical vampire…but I digress.

In current Boston, where supernaturals have their place among humans, Angel is a special kind of and powerful magician : a necromancer. With his younger brother, he’s the only survivor of his family who was decimated during a “bloodwar” with a vampire clan when he was still a teen.
He’s cranky, he’s both revered and feared though keeping his distance from any involvement, but when it comes to teaching the art of Magic and helping vampires hurt by magic. And also maybe with Simeon, a sexy Irish vampire with a vey high ranking in the vampire clan which took over Boston after the bloodwar.

However, it seems that somebody is suddenly after Angel. Why ? Who ? Angel is set to find out and take the proper actions while Simeon decides it’s time for him to step in and claim Angel because yes, he can be patient, but he won't allow anyone to hurt Angel.

The writing is good, the world-building captivating, the plot is well crafted and gripping and the pace was to my liking. If not for a tiny detail, it would have been a strong 4 star-read and I would have jumped to read the rest of the series.

BUT…yes, there is a “but”…vampires are not my thing…**Ewww** 😉 I blame one of my worst childhood nightmares after watching a movie with vampires (I should have listened to my Mom and go to bed instead of sneaking out and watch TV, LOL).

So, for fans of fantasy MM romance with vampires, I think this series is a very good one to go for. As for myself, I will stop there and remain with MCs with normal teeth instead of fangs...better be safe than sorry 😉

My first Joel Leslie audio was a smashing success! I loved it so much I immediately bought book two and started listening. While in my car. Driving. During morning rush hour.

I probably shoulda waited, huh?

Re-review 10Aug2018: No change

I gave this audio a whirl again to see if I could just focus on the Boston accent part of JL's Angel performance...and yeah, no. He still sounds old. But I'm over it and if I can get my Library to pick up the audio for the next one, I listen to it anyway. If not...well, we'll see. #2 is on my list for challenges so I'll cross that bridge when/if I get to it. Because otherwise the story is still really well-told and the alternate 'verse created here is extremely interesting...

The re-listen did have me wishing we had more of their back-story, though.

Original Review 19Oct2017: 4 Stars

Oh hey, this picked up to be quite an interesting tale! I really liked the romance between Angel & Simeon (even if Angel was a bit combative about it) and the way they protected and fought for each other. Also, with Angel being a necromancer, that could be a dangerous power to hold over someone essentially dead so more power to Simeon for his faith in Angel.

I liked the world building and the back-story, and though it seems we come into a story where Angel & Simeon already know each other, it didn't feel like we missed much. Definitely plan to go on to the next one...just not sure if I'll listen to that one. Something about Joel Leslie's portrayal of Angel seemed to age him - by at least half a century. The voice was very old-sounding, with a quavering that got really annoying sometimes. That said, his portrayal of Simeon's Irish brogue was panty-melting hot...so it's a toss up whether I'll splurge on the audio again.

Reread/Relisten #4: March 2024: Lowering my rating to a 3.5-4 stars

It's either my mood, or I am getting different tastes of my books since I last picked up this series... but I didn't enjoy this as much as I did a few years ago.

I wanted to reread all of them before picking up book 5 on audio... but i might have to put that on pause haha

Reread/Relisten #3: October 2021:

at this point this is a favorite that i keep coming back to....so had to bump the rating up to a 5 since i will always love these books with a passion. its like listening to a favorite song that will hopefully get me out of a reading slump i see looming in my future.

Reread/Relisten #2: July 2021:

Because i am trash and couldn't find another book's premise interesting, i decided to go back to a series i love with a narrator that brings this series to life!

so i decided its 2021 and who cares if i read the same series 3 times in less than 6 months, if you have a problem with that, i don't really care haha.

Reread/Relisten #1: May 2021:

I enjoyed this just as much as the first time. The amount of action and what the characters have to go through makes for a fast paced story that you don't want to put down.

I am excited to continue with the series, although I know that book 4 wasn't my favorite and it is the longest i think... i guess we will see what i do when i get there, now just on to book two.

Original Read/Listen: April 2021:

okay i will say i started this book/audiobook last year and at that time i wasn't used to Joel Leslie's narration so i returned the book, buuuut after listening to many books narrated by Joel Leslie i decided to try again.

I was not disappointed that is for sure, this book was different of how i thought it was going to be but i am not going to complain also not going to complain about Joel's Irish accent for Simeon (Loved it).

I can't wait to see what they get up to in the next book

Whether you classify The Necromancer's Dance as a paranormal romance or an urban fantasy, the fact remains it's an entertaining story. One might even say spell-binding?

But seriously though, the story, told in Angel's POV, was quite enjoyable with engaging characters, a riveting storyline, plenty of action, and some very nice chemistry between main characters Angel and Simeon.

Joel Leslie's narration was delightful, enchanting the listener with multiple character accents including a typical Boston and a lilting Irish brogue. There were a couple of minor sound issues, mainly the sound level dropping suddenly, but it corrects quickly and I don't feel like it detracted from the general overall listening satisfaction.

A pleasure in both story and audio performance, I'm looking forward to getting the next in the series (hopefully soon).

I loved this. Seriously loved it.

PNR will always be my first love and although this is classified more as UF I'm allowed to disagree. It was totally romantic.

I immediately started the next book in the series.

Perfect for me. Totally.

This is an awesome read. I am always looking for some good m/m romance with vampires, and although the main MC is a necromancer, his lover, a vampire Elder, is sexy enough to sate my thirst for a bloodsucker.
Angelus is the city most powerful necromancer, feared by many. The magic and spell that he can do is fascinating. Angelus is one snarky bastard and he is afraid of no one. Love his confidence and his no nonsense attitude.
Simeon is the Elder of the vampire clan, the second most powerful vampire in the city and he is just so dreamy from the get go. Simeon is a bit old school with the way he was courting Angelus through the years. I like that they know each other quite well at the beginning of the book. The way they interact with each other, the banter and trust they have, is like a mating dance.
Someone is out there wanting to kill Angelus, and Simeon is being all protective and making his desire known without being pushy about it is all kind of sexy. Everytime he call Angelus, My love, I melted.
Their relationship might be new and fragile, but they trust and respected each other. Non of those misunderstanding, I-can-take-care-of-myself and alpha posturing bullshit.
Truthfully, this book is amazing, from the world building, suspense and romance. Can't wait to dive into the next one.

So many of my friends read this series that I decided to start too. And I truly like the story and the characters, however I have skipped some parts and have some issues.

First the good things. I really like the characters. Angel and Simeon make an interesting couple. Still, I find Simeon slightly undeveloped. We don’t really know a lot about him. But the next books in this series are there to discover him better. And it will be a true pleasure to do. I like the fact that Angelus past doesn’t dominate his personality. The secondary characters, including Angel’s brother Isaac, are also pretty interesting.

About the romance, this part is mostly already done when the story begins. They just make the first steps and from there everything goes pretty fast. On the one hand, it's okay, because we do not deal with instant love, but on the other hand everything is still very simple and very fast. The romance development is nearly non-existing. And even though I wish there is more in this department, I find the thing between Angel and Simeon quite sweet. I like them as a couple.

The suspense part may not be excessively innovative but it’s enjoyable. I wasn’t really astonished by the final outcome, still, there are some twists and turns to satisfy me. And the suspense part is connected to the magic aspects of the story which is always good in this genre.

Finally, the thing I definitely dislike about this book and which caused that I lowered my rate of this book, although I’m still thinking about raising it because, despite some shortcomings, it was a very pleasant experience. Unfortunately, this book is unpleasantly wordy. Although the concept of the magical world created by the author is not overly complicated, the story is seriously slowed down by lengthy descriptions that could be effectively avoided. These, combined with sometimes extensive internal reflections of Angel, make the story stumble in place from time to time.

I’m giving this story 3.5 stars and I will give a though to raising it. After all this is a pretty nice read and I will definitely read the next book in this series somewhat soon.

I don't think I'd give it the 5★'s I did on my first read but this go round there was still a lot to love.

Especially the narration. I loved, loved, loved both the Boston accent and the Irish accent. It added a lot to the book in my opinion. This is a pretty exciting story and having it read to you and hearing the anger and desperation and sadness in Angel's voice upped the excitement level.

I feel I just noticed some things this time I may not have the first go round. I think I needed more relationship development this time. Don't get me wrong, I want what they have and I can see it being that overwhelming and emotional but I'd have liked a little more telling, maybe a .5 type of story. More interaction between the two in the past two years to see how we really got here. But again, I am so glad they have each other. Angel, poor Angel. I love him being loved.

Oh, who am I kidding. This is still a 5★ read.

Wow .. this is a new introduction for me to the magical worlds of S.J. Himes. I really rally loved her other book series wolfkin saga and they are one of my favorites. Since she can write werewolves stories so good, it's no surprise to me that she's as equally good at writing vampire and magic user stories. However, I have to say that the tale of how Angel's family died is a bit complicated but I think it's because this is only book one. May be I can dig deeper into that issue in book 2. I really can't wait to see Constantine Batiste get his own HEA too. This is a standout character for me in this story although he was merely a sidekick in this one.

The story of Angel and Simeon is sweet, minty and chocolatey. I'd like to know more about how will they maintain their HEA while one is mortal and the other immortal. Again, this is only book1 so I hope I can find out more about these lovers in book 2.

The storyline is very fascinating, the sex is hot and they got HEA. What more could you ask?

❤️❤️❤️
