Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

Naruto Volume 7 Review

Manga Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

Story Line: 5 stars out of 5. Naruto is still unconscious. Sasuke wakes up now. The curse mark that Orochimaru placed on him starts to react. He breaks the guy who hurt Sakura's arms. He was going to kill him. Sakura stops him. The other team asks to be let go. They leave. Naruto wakes up finally.

Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura still need to get another scroll. Naruto wants to open the scroll, but Kabuto stops them. Another team had opened the scroll and was knocked out. Kabuto decides to stay with them until they get through the forest. There is another team wanting to get their scroll.

The team puts them inside of a ginjutsu. Naruto uses his shadow clones to make replicas of his teammates. He did it so they could trick the other team. They wanted them to make them think they are tired. Naruto is really warn out from doing that although he still wants to fight. Also in battle Sasuke feels pain while using his Sharingan. They make to the tower with only a couple of hours to spare.

I really loved reading this! I really can't wait until I get into the Shippuden chapters though. I'm like really ready for it to happen!

Characters: 5 stars out of 5. I'm only going to talk about the main four that are featured in this volume!
Naruto- He's developing so fast. He is a such an amazing character. I love him so much.
Sasuke- Bye!
Sakura- Bye!
Kabuto- He's alright. I don't hate him!

Drawing/Art Style: 5 stars out of 5.

Very weird book. But I love weird. Anyways, the books is about Naruto and his friends try to find the heaven scroll because in a fight they lost it and the bad guy burn the heaven scroll to ashes. After a little while, they sat down and had lunch. Naruto said why not we open a scroll? but one his friend said no because we were told to open them at the tower. Somewhere else...Someone open a scroll and they died. Naruto didn't care and almost opened it. But someone stopped Naruto and explained to him that if he opened that scroll he would see something and it would kill him. So the got up everyone got up and on the way they got attack and that were the story ends.

More introductions of solid, long-term characters, the explosion of Sasuke's curse, and the fulfillment of part two of the Chunin exams. Pretty standard stuff, some of it a lot more interesting than others. Basically, the first half of this volume was pretty awesome, with the second half being mostly dull except for the bit with Gaara, which really amped up the ongoing threat. This guy is simply too powerful, and it shows right from the get go. (It's also more and more of a pleasure to read, knowing what I already know about him and his development.)

Naruto's immaturity is becoming too annoying to ignore... There is so much potential in him and I know this is just the beginning of his road. But it feels like for every step he takes toward wisdom, he takes two backwards in the beginning of every volume.

On to Vol 8. Looking forward to a real breakthrough!

Gaara was the standout here. The ninja powers still seem kind of random, and there are a LOT of characters to keep track of at the moment but I’m enjoying!

In Volume 7, Naruto and his gang continue in the Chūnin Exams. After they were left reeling from Orochimaru's attack, they are now left to battle yet another team of ninjas seeking to take them out. Meanwhile, other ninja teams are attempting to capture the scrolls needed to pass the exams as well.

Honestly, this volume didn't do much for me. I don't know if I just let too much time pass between when I read volume 6 and this volume, but I spent the whole time a bit confused. There are so many moving parts to this series! Other than Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura I could barely remember the other characters. As the story progressed I was only able to truly recall how one or two of the other characters related to the story, sadly.

I am also struggling with the visuals, believe it or not! In many frames I find that I'm staring for long minutes trying to figure out who is reacting to what, or what is even happening. It's really frustrating when things just *happen* for no apparent reason. I tried to let go a bit and just keep pushing onward, but with so many moving parts, it was a really challenge to get engaged.

I might be over Naruto at this point. I love the premise and I love how weird it is. But, I just can't seem to catch on to it.

Another good volume. Liking where this arc is going. These couple of volumes are a breeze through since this arc is fast paced and drawn well.

As Sasuke gets a first taste of his new powers, things escalate in risk and reward. But what's even more jaw-dropping is Gaara's first exhibition of his abilities, and it is not for the faint of hearts. Dude is insane and I can't wait to get more stories regarding him.

Oh, and Kabuto is one sketchy bastard. I do not look forward to any of his slimy moves.

Yours truly,

The second exam was all about survival mostly and it was a fantastic experience to see Team 7 grow exponentially throughout this ordeal. All this Tai Jutsu and Gen Jutsu were far too fascinating to witness. The true colors of Gaara are now coming to the fore, which has taken the exam to a deadly level. Our heroes have claimed yet another victory on their way to becoming the Journeyman Ninja. I can't wait to see what the next exam have in store for Team 7.

Kabuto is my detested. I'm glad everyone's up and moving again. My hyperfixation with Sasuke and Sakura is coming back slowly but surely. I love the curse mark drama but am not looking forward to chunin stage 3 and the third dying.

Getting better and better. The story goes deeper and mixing it up with good action makes it very entertaining. i also find that the teeny humor is less present recently and that makes it more fun for the adult reader that I am.

The first steps of the arc involving Sasuke and Orochimaru. Amazing stuff. Many other stories have tried to do the Sasuke archetype. None have succeeded to the degree of his character. I think he and Anakin Skywalker sit at the pinnacle of the corrupted character.

This is a review of the entire series.

Once upon a time, the spirit of an evil Nine Tailed Fox wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents. The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life. He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people.

Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows. The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world.

Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same. They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families. Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child.

On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade. He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways. He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods. His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike. He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time.

Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage. Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood. Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers.

Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village. He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption.

Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war. He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes.

The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja. Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation. Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes.

The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies. There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly. There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills. Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy. The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway. The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on.

On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are. One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them. How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction. Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story.

Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues. A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later. Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc...

Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general. It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular. Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one.

This is the first Naruto to get a full 5 stars from me. Our team is still in the Forest of Death and both Naruto and Sasuke are unconscious. Orochimaru has recruited several ninjas to attack and kill Sasuke, but he infected him first. These three ninjas arrive to kill Sasuke but are instead confused by his actions. Sasuke wakes up with new powers and begins to single-handedly take everyone down.

During this time, a different group of ninjas complete the task in the forest with record time. When watching the surveillance footage, the supervisors are flabbergasted at the strength and brutality shown in one kid in particular: Gaara. Is it strange that I loved this kid?? So badass. I'm sure it's strange...I'm weird like that. Anyway, this side story was fascinating and I want to see more!

Back to our clan, due to Sasuke's new power, their attackers run off and they head toward the tower. They come across a lone ninja that was separated from his group: his name is Kabuto. He helps them make it all the way to the tower and is quite suspicious. At the very end, as Naruto and the gang are about to open the scrolls, we discover that Kabuto was a spy of Orochimaru. This volume leaves on quite a cliffhanger.

Sasuke gets a fever as soon as he gets bitten by Orochimaru and the curse keeps hurting him and doesn't let him wake up. Naruto is passed out as well. Sakura manages to put traps and hide with the two of them. However Orochimaru's subordinates, the Sound Shinobi come over to attack, rather kill Sasuke. Determined to not let them hurt her friends we see a completely new Sakura. She may not be an amazing fighter but she's smart and brave. She doesn't let them near the two unconscious boys but outnumbered 3-1 she is at a disadvantage. When all hope is lost Lee comes to the rescue and defends them. However the Sound Shinobi are too much for the two of them and soon Lee too is defeated by them. From the bushes though, I no Chouji and Shikamaru keep watch, wanting to avoid combat as they're surely no match for them. When Sakura is held by her hair and is taunted about how they're gonna kill Sasuke, the Sakura who loved her hair, who did everything to look beautiful in order to capture Sasuke's heart, she takes a kunai and slices her hair in order to get out of her enemy's clutches and get back to defending her friends. Seeing this Ino and team come out and help her fight them three Shinobi. In just a few minutes they're defeated, but Sasuke is awake. However he looks different, he's affected by the cursed seal, and his whole body seems to be glowing red, like fire. He singlehandedly defeats one and breaks another's hands. Sakura seeing Sasuke like a bloodthirsty beast can see Orochimaru's eyes in Sasuke's and manages to bring him back to his senses. The Sound Ninja may be defeated but things are more complex than it seems.

Anko sensei finds dead bodies outside the exam location, and the other team of Shino, Kiba-Akamaru and Hinata see a gruesome murder by the Sand Shinobi Gaara, Temari and Kankuro.

Another action-packed and suspenseful read as our trio of Chunin Exam takers, Team 7, try to stay alive and thrive in the Forest of Death. Helping and thwarting them are various students in groups of three, all with their own elaborate character designs, talents and motives. As with the last volume, you may need a scorecard to keep track!

The volume begins with Naruto and Sasuke still in a coma. Meanwhile, tokubetsu jōnin Anko Mitarashi makes her way to the central tower where she and an assistant see on video footage that a very powerful genin team completed their goals in an astonishingly short time.

A note mentions that this was the first volume of Naruto created entirely digitally. Fortunately, the art looks no different to my eyes; it looks as organic, hand-drawn and beautiful as ever.
