Overall, I enjoyed this book and am really excited to read book two. The plot was fantastic, the main female MC, Poppy, was generally relatable but I really loved the side characters. I think I got attached to the side characters more than I did the main characters.
Now, let's talk about these hysterical giggles. The writing in this book was questionable sometimes ...more

Review: A slow burn that is worth all the burn. Britt Bennett weaves the story of two twins together, tying all the characters into one from 4 different perspectives.
The writing is fantastic and keeps you hooked and I'd call it a great piece of art. Bennett explores themes of racism surrounding one specific family and how it affects multiple generations....more

This book will emotionally wreck you. It will take you into the world of these 4 characters, their lives, and the people surrounding them like it’s real life. I went in prepared for trauma and emotional passages but I don’t think you can ever be fully prepared for the contents of this book.
This book has a lot of trauma. Sometimes too much trauma. It’s overwhelming and secondary trauma from this book is so real. I’d recommend anyone who wants to read this book seriously consider if they have capacity to read it. It’s not for the faint of heart and it’s extremely graphic. I felt like it didn’t need to be this graphic to get the point across and often I felt like Jude was hurting just to hurt.
However, Yanagihara does a good job at analogizing trauma and events to abstract feelings, providing words to myself of how something could feel. The various POVs were done beautifully (although sometimes it was confusing who “he” was referring to). I also found it a bit too descriptive at certain times and felt like I wanted to skip over those passages.
My heart breaks for Jude, for his friends, for everyone. While it’s a book about trauma, the whole book takes you on a journey of life - the highs, the lows, and the in between. It truly makes you reflect on how we really don’t know anything about what other people might be going through.
Would recommend reading the TW for sure. Take breaks as needed because it’s not something I could read in a sprint....more

Reading this book felt like reading formal text messages from a friend... if they were written in novel format. All to say that the writing was easy to read. There were moments when I was seriously laughing out loud at the cute awkwardness between Adam and Olive.
I do wish that more time was spent on getting to know some of the friends in more detail as well as Olive and Adam's individual lives before they met each other. I felt that their past was covered quickly towards the end and left me wanting to know more.
I know everyone raves about Adam but to be completely honest, I wasn't his biggest fan until the last 50 or so pages and then everything flipped SO fast. And not always too fond of the "woman who needs saving" type deal. They do go well together though.......more

This is a particularly character driven book that follows 4 friends in their individual lives before they meet and their lives come together. I especially loved the differences in writing styles of the emails between Alice and Eileen showcasing their wildly different personalities.
This is a completely different book and writing style than normal people and while it took a while to get used it, it was absolutely brilliant. The imagery romanticizing normal everyday events is going to make me think about these seemingly mundane things in my own life....more
