When I went into this book, I was crossing my fingers that the execution of it and the writing style matched how great the synopsis was. I'm so glad the book held up to how good it sounds, and it's definitely a memorable romance I'll be recommending!
My primary concern about this book was that since it's about a married couple with kids, I wouldn't be able to relate to it or enjoy it since they're several years ahead of me on the maturity scale. Attached to that, I was hoping this wouldn't become a women's fiction book about fixing a marriage with no steamy scenes. Quickly, both of my fears became obsolete. The fact that this book follows characters who are already in a relationship makes it so much more real. Rather than two characters living out a dolled up romance, this is about a relationship that's dead and both characters having to fight to reanimate it. It's different than anything I've ever read and was so interesting and realistic and human. In addition, the scenes of Gavin and Thea interacting with their kids were SO wholesome.
I jokingly told my friend while I was reading this that it reads like what a Nicholas Sparks book would be if Nicholas Sparks books were actually good. It talks about family issues--both in their current relationship and in their childhood trauma--while also being a cuddly romance about two adults rediscovering each other through honesty. This book was SO soft because Gavin was making an effort to be attentive to Thea's needs and insecurities, and watching them reblossom to one another was so heart warming and emotional.
The writing of this book is spectacular in all areas except one. I loved when the author would delve into the character's backstories and they way she wrote their dialogue and all the humor that was folded into the Bromance Book Club. I especially loved how this book was a mix of real-time action with scenes interspersed from the regency romance book the men were reading. The reason I took off .5 stars, however, was there were moments in this book where the characters would randomly get on a soapbox about feminism that didn't match the context of the conversation at all. There were seriously some paragraphs that read like an essay for a women and gender studies class rather than a romance book because it wasn't subtle at all. The men in the book club are self-aware about feminism and toxic masculinity, which is good, but it wasn't subtle at all and ended up sounding like fan service to other women reading the book because those random feminism rants didn't sound authentic to the men's voices at all. But a part of the book I did like is that Thea, the wife, was strident in her independence and her feminism, which I enjoyed way more than when the characters went off on tangents about the male gaze and the patriarchy.
But overall, this book was so addicting and enjoyable. It was quick and sweet but also the perfect amounts of meaningful and realistic. I love any romance book that takes the shininess away from relationships and delves into real human lives, and this book definitely fits that category. I can't wait to pick up a copy when it comes out!...more

the people who dislike this book are wrong, and that's just facts.
(i'm kidding--i love u and your reading tastes very much. muah.)
I'll preface this review by saying I typically don't enjoy books about witchcraft, so I was nervous going into this one. For me, books about magic walk a fine line of being too silly, which really takes me out of the world and makes it seem more childish instead of its intended intensity. But this book, its writing, and its world COMPLETELY captured me.
My favorite part of this book by far was the main character, Lou. If you loved Lila from A Darker Shade of Magic, you will absolutely love this book. Lou is crass and vulgar and charismatic and brave and doesn't care what other people think. Juxtaposed with a love interest and a world who are subdued and reserved, it made the narration so much fun. Lou was smart and talented and fun to learn about, which made her story that much more addicting. I also relate to using humor as a distraction technique, and the way Lou was written was so relatable.
On top of that, the writing in this book was stunning. The world is French-inspired, and I love that I could see the corsets in my mind and the cobblestones and smog. This author is also great at detailing out the characters and their interactions, which makes me feel like I'm in the room with them when they're conversing. Though this book is written in first person dual POV, there's a distinct difference between the voices of the two characters, and I never had to double check to see who I was reading from. I for sure want to read everything Shelby writes in the future.
Another interesting facet of this book (I could go on forever) is the whole conflict of witches vs the church. The conversations this book evokes about religion and corruption and fear are so nuanced and subtle, which I really applauded. Both from an external perspective and seeing how the characters develop and learn more about one another and shift their points of views to be more understanding and tolerant was so beautiful. I was actually crying for the whole middle section of this book because it was sad and touching and made me think a lot more than I had anticipated.
Although this book is a definite far stars from me, I did find myself a little bit more impressed with the first half of this book than the last. Don't get me wrong, I devoured this 500 page book in nearly two sittings, but it felt like the first half was full of funny and cute and angsty moments, and then the last half of this book was a bit more subdued. The reveals weren't as shocking, the progression of the relationship wasn't as special, but I still like the direction it went. I wish the enemies to lovers plotline was fraught with a little bit more tension in the end, but that's more of a personal preference than an actual flaw of the book.
But this book was glorious and I'm highly anticipating book two and that's that on that....more

New favorite!!! What this book lacked in its predictability and simplicity, it made up for in gorgeous writing, tangible characters, and enchanting world. The best way I can describe this book is Miss Peregrines meets Second Chance Summer, and I love that the magical elements of this were subtle but added just enough of a surreal element to make your head spin--in a good way, of course.
I LOVED the relationship in this book from beginning to end. Georgie's reactions to Prue were so wholesome and hilarious, and Prue being vocal for the first time about liking girls was such a touching spot of the book that will definitely make this unforgettable.
Even though this book was brief (and honestly it would be a five star read if we would have gotten just a liiiitle more description and the writing was tweaked to be more subtle so that I wouldn't have guessed so much), it has a lot of heart. The family relationships in this and the island setting were so cozy and pleasant. Even though this has darker themes toward the end and has a melancholy vibe, it was still addicting and hopeful and had moments of tenderness, like the humor I mentioned earlier.
As much as I would LOVE a continuation of this story, I think it ends in a place that purposefully makes my heart ache for more. This book was just so spectacular that I want more, so I think it's a sign that I should just give more of Katrina Leno's books a read....more

It's cute, it's down to Earth, it's a gleaming royal setting, and the cast of characters is so fun. The main character Daisy is sarcastic and witty in a way that resembles a real teenager but doesn't come off as corny. The book is packed with action and twists, almost within every chapter. There's never a good place to put this book down because something new is always occurring. I loved how easy and feel-good this book seemed, but it also had roots of relatable problems like having a sibling who outshines you and handling being the second best and learning not to take others' false judgments of you to heart. This book could have been drawn out to fill some of the time in the time skips or establish the romance better, but I think the shortness of the book is actually what made it so simple and sweet. I wasn't planning on reading this one and intended to just jump into the sequel because it has a f/f romance, but I'm so glad I picked this up and I'll definitely be investing in a copy of the newer paperback version that was updated to match the sequel....more

I'm upsetti spaghetti that this book ended as soon as it did.
I went into this thinking it would be just vapid smut, so boy was I surprised. The writing in this is actually one of the most gorgeous styles I've read all year, and I'm 100% gonna read more from this author. This had a great segmenting of smut versus actual plot, and the actual plot was.... wait for it.... interesting! I will admit that .5 stars came off of the rating because it was a little confusing, but it was an enchanting concept nonetheless. I just wish there was more direction on why the characters were doing what they were doing because it felt a bit aimless, and by the end of the book, I forgot why the characters were so invested in doing this ritual.
Still, I think this book is really modern in how it examines virginity and polyamory. In between the sexy scenes, there's so much angst and pining, and it's my exact cup of tea. I've heard lots of negative things about book two, but I'm interested nonetheless to see where this goes....more

Katie O'Neill can do no wrong. This book was so stinking cute from the art style to the positivity to the inclusivity and the dragons. I think I enjoyed it better than book one. This world is so magical and transporting and uplifting, and I love how people of different genders and sexualities and disabilities are seamlessly folded in. There were certain panels in this book that spoke to me so much as an adult even though this is written for children, it's that good. I highly recommend this for any age range, and if you at all enjoyed the first book, I think this companion would highly interest you....more
THIS BOOK SAID TALL GIRL RIGHTS!!!! THIS BOOK SAID BISEXUAL RIGHTS!!!!!
Don't let this book fool you and let you think it's just another author trying THIS BOOK SAID TALL GIRL RIGHTS!!!! THIS BOOK SAID BISEXUAL RIGHTS!!!!!
Don't let this book fool you and let you think it's just another author trying to capitalize off of having the word "Thorns" in the title to appear like a Sarah J. Maas knock-off. This is my favorite book of 2019, and Sarah J. Maas should be SHAKING right now. I read this author's debut book, An Enchantment of Ravens, and hated it, so I was skeptical going into it. But I knew within the first chapter of this book that it was going to be something else entirely on a whole different level, and it was. The glow up this author went through, in my opinion, is UNREAL.
The writing style? STUNNING The characters? BRILLIANT The romance? SOFT The plot? I'M RUNNING OUT OF ADJECTIVES
When I say this book is unique, I don't mean it's ~special~ or it's ~interesting~. I mean there is literally not a single book out there that has done what this book has done. It has the cozy, library vibe of Harry Potter. It has the demonic tinge and 19th century flare of The Infernal Devices. It has the magical angst of a Sarah J. Maas book. And yet it did all of that together flawlessly, and better than all the previous series combined.
I adored the main character, who was a wallflower and quiet but also had a side of her that was fiercely loyal, honest, and willing to question injustice. I'm always a sucker for characters who fight to do good despite their circumstances, and Elisabeth definitely embodied that. I particularly loved her because SHE SUFFERS FROM PANIC ATTACKS!!! and yet is a smart, badass heroine. Also, she is described as being tall and that fact is very present in the book, and it made my tall girl heart soar!! Nathaniel was also a dynamic character who both filled the role of sassy, broody, BISEXUAL!!!!! love interest but was also an entire person on his own with a lineage and backstory that speaks a lot to his development. Them together was such an interesting pair and would I have complained if we got more smut? Absolutely not.
For the majority of this book, I did not have a single complaint. It was gripping with everyone scene flowing seamlessly to the next. I adored every side character. The writing was magnificent and awe-inspiring; flowery without being too self-important. The characters jumped off the page and had realistic moral complexities. Typing this review, I feel like my fingers can't move fast enough to list its good qualities. But the one part (literally, the single only thing) that I wish this book were stronger about was the development of the villain. The main character discovers very quickly who is behind all of the nefarious activities going on, and from there, it's a pretty straight line to preventing that person from succeeding in their great plans. Although I feel the magical and political conflict was developed well, I wish the villain's side of the story were better explained or maybe even reworked to be less generic because the evil they were stopping was massive, and yet it felt like the reason that evil was being provoked was something quite basic and irrelevant.
But despite that small grievance, I will be camping out on this author's doorstep for a sequel. I know it's a standalone, but these characters and this world have captured my heart and I refuse to let go. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. I don't have a good enough parting line to leave you with other than this is going to be my obsession for a very long time and I will stop at nothing to insist you all read it immediately....more

I don'tI've been crying for the last hour, everything hurts, and I'm SO glad I chose to pick up this book. It's in my top three favorites of the year.
I don't even know where to start but this is the exact brand of romance that I'm obsessed with. The two main characters are snarky and sarcastic and headstrong, but it never comes off as cheesy or unrealistic. Their romance is fraught with tension and angst, but I was invested in their story. Their relationship was SOFT!!!! SO SOFT!!!!!!
This book follows a woman with uterine fibroids, and that representation and seeing how that both affected her having chronic pain and the way that Josh supported her was so, so beautifully done. I was laughing out loud for most of this book, and I cried my entire way through the end. There were some spotty lines every now and then with some distasteful possessiveness or jokes, but the characters and the angst in this really shone through.
If you are a fan of The Hating Game or Josh & Hazel's Guide to Not Dating or anything similar, you HAVE to pick this book up. I think it's my new favorite romance book, and it's getting a full five stars from me.

I remember reading Y: TI found this book by complete chance at the library and I am smashing it onto my wishlist to buy ASAP because it was SO good!! I remember reading Y: The Last Man and being so confused that in a story about all the men in th eworld dying, why would the authors choose to focus on the last man instead of women ruling the world?? And this gave me everything I wished that book was, plus it was SO hilarious. I was actually cackling out loud reading this and I would keep flipping back to my favorite comics and laugh at them even more. This isn't necessarily one continuous story so much as little humorous scenarios about each of the characters, and the author's ability to make a joke in a graphic novel format with the art style, the punchlines, breaking the fourth wall, making meme references, and packing a punch with a political statement was expertly done. I highly recommend this and I'm so glad I picked it up!...more

I read this from the library because I was unsure if a book in verse would be worth paying full price for, but after finishing it, my answer 4.5 stars
I read this from the library because I was unsure if a book in verse would be worth paying full price for, but after finishing it, my answer is yes. It is definitely worth the money to get a copy of my own. I loved multiple subjects this book tackled, mainly being the daughter of a religious mother and wanting to stray from that but experiencing guilt and anxiety over it. Plenty of other important topics were addressed, and it was all within a format that was as poetic as the main character’s hobby was.
This book began and ended on such sharp dialogue and impactful scenes that I enjoyed it right off the bat and I finished it with relish, but the middle stagnated a bit for me. I wish the climactic scenes were given as much time and as many pages as mundane day-to-day activities. Still, I was grateful for those because for a book in verse, the cast of characters is very humanized and fleshed out.
One thing that I found peculiar was that this book is about a poet, one who many times performs her poetry, and yet the reader is never actually shown the poems she reads to crowds, only the narration is shown. I wish we could have seen what Xiomara writes and shares with her peers and poetry competitions in addition to her inner monologue about what she experiences.
Despite these minor, minor issues, I highly enjoyed my reading experience and this book has definitely raised the bar for how books in verse should be. Honestly, I can see this book as required reading for teens. It’s so honest and because of its format, it packs a lot of meaning into succinct statements. I definitely plan on reading this author’s more recent contemporary book because I think her handle of language is outstanding and I fully support her stance on a lot of issues facing young women of color. ...more

I knew within 50 pages this book was going to get a high rating. Like I said about Prince Charming, the first book, this series is so feel-good and upbeat and addicting to read. Millie and Flora's camaraderie and hate to love romance was *chefs kiss* FROM THE GODS and their development, though contained in a short novel, was still spectacularly drawn out.
My only grievance about this book is that the characters' personalities seem kinda similar, both to each other and to the characters in the previous book. Hawkins has a really easy time writing wit and sarcasm, but she gives several characters that same tone in their dialogue, so it felt a bit repetitive and overdone at times. Maybe this issue was rooted in the characters not having enough fleshing out of their inner workings, but the dialogue often felt like the characters were trying to one-up one another with their sarcastic remarks, and I almost craved some more tension to cut the constant jokes that began to grow corny.
Still, I highly recommend this series if you want books about royals that will fly by and make you laugh out loud and clutch the book to your chest out of feels. I would love for Hawkins to continue writing in this universe even though you could certainly read either book as a standalone....more

First, the art was magnificent. Reading this felt like watching a movie because the panels focused on such specific shots and the transitions were lovely. Also, the use of color in this was so significant and overall, the art style was brilliant. Five stars for that alone.
Second, I like that this book has unlikable characters that do not smart things but still suffer the consequences of them. Even though this is a book about a relationship, I think it speaks more about friendship and the machinations of teenage infatuation than anything else. The characters in this make mistakes, and sure, maybe they should be regarded as something much more severe than “mistakes” and thus punished accordingly, but the way all the adversity brought the characters together again and drove home the morals the authors intended was beautifully done.
Also on a personal note, it was just so incredible to see sapphics so normalized in a book that was clearly modern and a very accurate representation of being a young, queer girl in 2019. Maybe the frame of the story wasn’t a healthy relationship, but the fact that none of these girls were hiding their intimacy or ashamed of their sexuality was enough to be special to me, and I’m so glad I read this....more

but i continue to love this series. it's bizarre and almost hyperbolically unrealistic, aside from there being fantastical elements, but i think it goes perfectly with this book's theme of hollywood glamor and being fake. none of these characters are likable, which is a really fun twist because that means this book basically has no stakes and anything can happen. as always, the art was gorgeous and the dialogue was funny and i just really, really enjoy these books even though it's purposefully hard to wrap your brain around....more

It follows two young women from Japan and Saudi Arabia moving to America for college and becoming roommates, and each little vignette discussed their cultures and how cohabitating spurred many opportunities to discuss their lives. Especially because this book was from Japanese origination, a lot of stereotypes and misconceptions about Islam and Muslim women were dispelled with Nada's commentary on religion. Even though some of Satoko's questions could be naive, Nada always corrected her and this book was such a pleasant story that is super empowering for Muslim women, even including factual information about increased women's rights in Saudi Arabia.
And besides the messages about cultures coming together, this book's plot was SO CUTE!! Both of these girls grew so close and had each other's backs, and they were both so funny and thoughtful. I wanted to be friends with them by the end of this book and join in on their parties where they would make foods from each other's home countries. The art in this is super duper cute and easy to follow, and I really have no complaints about this book other than it obviously isn't ownvoices, and Muslim women's experiences aren't a monolith, so I'd be interested in seeing other Muslim reviewer's perspectives on this to see if the representation is done thoughtfully and accurately.
But I highly, highly, highly recommend this and I really cannot wait until the sequels are translated! ...more

Thanks Gallery Books for the advanced reading copy!
Another book to add to my Superior Enemies to Lovers shelf! The night I picked this up, I ended up reading 250 pages all in one sitting and staying up until 7 AM. The plot of this is SOOOO addicting and seeing Ethan and Olive's shenanigans unfold and their combative personalities play out was so entertaining and hilarious. Christina Lauren have this unmatched writing style where everything they say is fun and funny without being cheesy or unrealistic. Her characters reflect this writing style and are always so two dimensional with hilarious dialogue and such messy lives that still make you envy them and put yourself in their shoes because they end up in such unglamourous yet adorable relationships. I giggled and laughed and cried multiple times while reading this, which partially may be because I was on my period, but also it was just the perfect read for someone who loves really candid characters and witty dialogue.
The ~island adventure~ part of this book, which I would have rated 5 stars, immediately got a bit glossed over for the last half of the book to be about family drama, which was still fine but clearly I prefer the angst and sexiness lol. Despite my gripe about the family drama, I really liked that Olive was Mexican, and accordingly, her big family was very present and supportive. On the note of representation, Olive was also described as being "curvy," which was mentioned a couple times.
The issues I had with this were all so minor and could almost be posed as just a list of personal preferences that I wish were in the book, but they still culminated enough to make me feel like this book wasn't quite a 5 star read. For it to have reached that 5-star quality, I would have liked . . . 1. Olive and Ethan's closeness to not have been spurred by a "make my ex-girlfriend jealous when she sees us" trope 2. The conflict in the last half of the book to be spread out more evenly throughout the entire book; it seemed like the first half was fun and games and the last half was really heavy on the emotion. 3. More sexiness. The only sex scene was skipped over and I'm disappointed Christina Lauren didn't deliver on the steamy side of this book. 4. Ethan to not defend a shitty person? idk, I know it's supposed to be one of his character flaws, but it made him slightly less attractive.
Basically, the reason I marked .5 off is because I'm selfish and I wanted this book to be the way I was expecting to be lol. Nevertheless, it still ranks up there with Josh & Hazel and Sweet Filthy Boy, which I loved! And once again, the more I read by Christina Lauren, the more I'm convinced that they can do no wrong....more

This book did not hold back any puncI knew before I was even halfway into this book that it would be receiving five stars, and holy hell was I right. This book did not hold back any punches and it offered such a profound story about powerful women of color that also was so touching that I was weeping throughout the last 20% of this book.
My list of things I enjoyed about this book is vast compared to a nonexistent section of things I didn't enjoy. I'll try and write a brief (read: long) list of things I adored about this book.
The representation. This book is primarily about people and women of color, so the main character is a dark-skinned black woman, her best friend and assistant is an Indian lesbian, her other best friend and roommate is a thai-american plus sized woman with agoraphobic anxiety (!!!!!! i need a book about her), the love interest is Samoan, the love interest's two best friends are black, one of whom is a stay-at-home father. That's not even mentioning other side characters. So yeah, this book rocked. The way women of color uplifted and supported each other in this book was also so touching and empowering.
This book dealt with such a diverse and unique array of subplots and handled them all spectacularly. Even the trope of the love interest being a sports player had valuable discussion about mental health and retirement. This book also tackles women of color being in positions of power and how others perceive that, as well as the trust issues Rhiannon experiences.
It's hard to get me to genuinely care about side characters, but even the side characters in this book had full character arcs and contributed meaningfully to the story in their own wholesome ways. I hope this book gets developed into a long, drawn-out spinoff series because I loved all the side characters.
The romance in this..... OOF!!!!! And I'm talking both the angst, the pacing of it, the consent, the steamy scenes..... everything was spectacular. this is SOOO healthy but is never boring or robotic because of it. the characters are still sexy as hell and have genuine and cute and funny interactions alongside maintaining healthy boundaries and communication. LOVED rhi and samson together!
The only complaint that I had during the first half of this book--that Rhiannon's bitter and rock hard side seemed a lot more developed than her soft side--definitely went away by the last half of the book. It was so touching to see women championing other women and to see Rhi's growth in learning to trust and speak out against injustice.
This is NOT a book to miss and I cannot smash the preorder button on Amazon hard enough....more

I think this book was the perfect balance of exploring Kenji's voice, getting his funny inner monologue, learning more about the world, and seeing the events of Restore Me from his eyes. I wouldn't necessarily call it a bridge book between books 4 and 5 (honestly, these chapters could have been thrown in at the end of Restore Me because I actually think they better describe the events than Warner and Juliette did), but I still had SO much fun reading it and was laughing and gasping at all the new information and world building and conversations that we didn't see in Restore Me.
I have a TON more to say about this with theories and new info reveals but it's 4:30 AM and I've been making my way through this book since midnight so my brain is just a big happy mush in my skull because I love Kenji so much and I adored this novella.
