It surprised me a bit with some of the serious subject matter that added depth to the story. It touches on religion, prejudice, and classism in a reimagined 1920s setting. Even though it is a teen book, the characters have maturity and are relatively fully developed. The folklore and magical nature of the story was fun to read and was fitting for the fall season....more

I devoured this book and honestly already want to re-read it. It’s sapphic and terrifying and romantic all at the same time. The portions of the book documenting the lost submarine make you feel the same sense of sensory deprivation as Leah and the others and it is so wonderfully disorienting. I loved the focus on the unexplored depths of the ocean and what kind of unfathomable creatures could exist. Highly highly recommend if you enjoy unsettling and odd books...more

Elif’s writing style endears you to Selin and makes it seem as if you’re living her life. The description of all of her friends and activities are so philosophical and interesting to read. Selin’s feelings for Ivan and all of the unrequited first love is so cute and yet raw at the same time. The book had been described to me as something to read if you’re feeling lost and not knowing what to do with your life and I agree. Selin’s journey helps hammer home that no one has life figured out and we’re all just taking it day by day. A definite re-read for me...more

I did not enjoy this. The narrator is intensely unlikeable (on purpose) and you never even learn her name. The book is intensely psychological and comments on psychiatry and medication for mental health. Then comes commentary on the art world and 9/11? Maybe I didn’t get what I was supposed to from the book, but I hated reading the inner thoughts of a privileged rich person who is intensely self centered and cruel. I expected a lot more from this than I got, sadly....more
