Before getting into the review, just know that: Don't worry, the review does not have any spoilers, neither for The Final Empire nor The Well of Ascension. Also here's a warning: don't read the goodreads description of this book (it has spoilers) if you've not read Book 1 of Mistborn trilogy.
"I write these words in steel for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted."
This book is such an upgrade from The Final Empire (though I also gave that book five stars). The pacing is relatively slow but I was much more interested and got by much faster. I actually liked the slow pacing bcoz it gave me time to take in all the politics and character depth and development. The first half might be somewhat really slow for some reader's liking but trust me you're going to love the second half and especially the climax of the book.
"The Terris rejected him, but he came to lead them."
The world building is chefs kiss!! I've now realised what makes Sanderson one of the best adult fantasy writers is his world building. The epigraph before each chapter, once again did its job created an air of mystery towards the story and exploration of the world.
"But must not even a madman rely on his own mind, his own experience, rather than that of others?"
I absolutely fcking love how Sanderson has created mystery through his words. This for me was why I was so invested... I just wanted more and more and more of it. And this mystery is much more enhanced bcoz we're looking at the wordplay through the perspective of a charcter (Sazed) in the book.
"Do not deride someone's faith simply because you do not share it."
I think the characters have much more depth in this book than The Final Empire. Sanderson focused on each of the crewmember in this book and I absolutely loved it. I also really appreciate how he highlighted a complexities of relationships and inner battles of a person (and trust me the complexitie he has explored is unlike in any book I've read).
"It is not my position to judge truth, Lord Venture," Sazed said, smiling. "I simply carry it."
The plot and plot twists weren't the main focus of this book, the characters were. But that doesn't mean the plots felt weak, they were still pretty frickin' amazing. After a revelation, I was bewildered and had to take a moment to take that in. Also, the action sequences were so so good...
"In the end, my pride may have doomed us all."
PS: I wanna read book 3 so so bad but I can't bcoz I have my exams coming up and then I'll just be up at night reading......more

Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher, wakes up to find himself on a spaceship in a completely different solar system. But he can't remember anything about how and why he's here? With his memory slowly returning, he finds himself facing an impossible mission of saving humanity, all alone?
First, let's talk about Ryland. Loveable Guy. His character was pretty simple and cool. His sense of humour, and probably sense of humour in the whole book, was witty but felt kinda dry at times. He was pretty resourceful at such a time of survival, but I think a major aspect of his character and the story was dependent on luck.
I didn't actually understand majority of the technical stuff going on, despite the pretty vast descriptions and me being a space enthusiast. But whatever. I liked that there was a past and present timeline (basically Ryland's memory). This helped in giving insights about the mission and other events. And made the book significantly better, otherwise the book would get pretty boring witn all the technical stuff going on and all things would take place in a spaceship alone in space.
Now, here's the turn off of the book for me: I didn't like how the story took a turn after the initial set up of the book. I don't think I should mention the exact thing for spoiler reasons. But just let me tell you, that thing was nowhere close to what I expected, and it changed the storyline in such a drastic way that I felt the writer might as well change the main storyline. I felt kinda betrayed (I'm overreacting ik). I agree that this would be the strongest point of the book for some people. But then again, and I agree it's a 'me-problem'. If you've read the book, you know (hopefully!) what I'm talking about!
The ending of the book. Well, it was all hell breaks loose kind-of thing, and I liked but also disliked it at the same time?? I had mixed feelings. I'll talk about what I didn't like: Honestly, I think the writer threw away realism and the ending became too dependent on emotions. But then again, it might just be a 'me-problem'. Whatever.
Overall, it was a witty and entertaining read having a pretty good mix of science. 3.5 stars for this one. I would love to hear your thoughts on the book!!!...more
My first Brandon Sanderson book and I really liked it. I'm amazed at how he can craft such an amazing story in about a hundred pages.
Shai is a forger,My first Brandon Sanderson book and I really liked it. I'm amazed at how he can craft such an amazing story in about a hundred pages.
Shai is a forger, she can rewrite the history of any object or person and recreate what its own perception of itself. While flawlessly creating a fake copy of a painting, she is caught and is sentenced to death. And gets one opportunity to save her life, she has to create a new soul for the emperor and save him from dying, and only gets a hundred days to get the job done. She accepts the challenge but while working upon it, she realises things are much more complicated , and that she is running out of time among other things.
The book delivers every single you might expect from a short novella and much more. We've got complex characters, well developed and enjoyable. There is unique world building. Interesting interactions between the characters. Fast-paced scenarios. The tension building and plot revelation were engaging. The ending was in a sense, beautiful.

I read The Love Hypothesis and gave it a whooping five stars. Going into 'Love on the Brain', I had high expectations and now after reading this, I am disappointed, highly.
Bee Konigswasser is a neuroscientist and she always portrays herself as Marie Curie and always asks What Would Marie Do? So when she gets the opportunity to work with NASA on a project, she accepts it immediately. But soon the excitement dissolves when she gets to know that she will be working alongside Levi Ward, her grad-school archnemesis. But while on the project, certain things happen and she thinks maybe Levi is not what she initially thought he was and some chemistry starts to develop b/w the two. OR DOES IT??
Ok so let's make one thing very clear here: this book is just a degraded version of The Love Hypothesis. Yes I know that the setting and trope are different BUT Bee is basically Olive ans Levi is Adam with past traumas, and both of the characters are executed poorly. And if you've read TLH, you will very easily guess exactly what is going to happen next. So just don't bother reading this book, ok?
Here's another thing I don't like: this book lacks details, the writer is just jumping to conclusions without giving any essential explanation. The lack of details highly affects the characters in the book, especially Levi. His character seems to be so underdeveloped because of this reason.
Now let's move on to the love interest. The chemistry between Bee and Levi seemed good at the start and then as the story progressed, it kept going downhill. At the start of the book, I was interested as we saw GrumpyxSunshine actually working and there was room for emotional connection b/w the two but the writer failed to develop it. And then the book hit the half-way mark, and it was a dead end for the chemistry. The second half of the book was full of physical intimacy without any emotional connection b/w the two. Imp, emotional connection is essential if there is a miscommunication thing going on, and this is probably why I was not interested in the love interest anymore.
A few quick things I would like to mention as the review is getting really long. The writing was good, Ali Hazelwood doesn't disappoint about that but the cons overpowered the writing. And the ending was highly dramatic and unrealistic, it made no sense.
There were mixed reviews about this book and I understand why many people liked the book (or do I?) but it just wasn't for me. Nonethless, I am still gonna read other books by Ali Hazelwood, I like her writing. I'm sorry for the long review, I highly needed to express my feelings about this book! This was 1.5 stars....more
