i'm not the biggest fan of second-chance romances, and i went into this book not expecting that to be the plot, but ithis was a really enjoyable read.
i'm not the biggest fan of second-chance romances, and i went into this book not expecting that to be the plot, but i think shireen and chris have changed my mind. i loved the way the story was told. the writing was light and breezy, yet picturesque. i enjoyed the characters also, with fatima being my favorite.
the reason i'm not giving this book a perfect rating has to do with my expectations. as a baking nerd, i expected shireen to also be one and talk more about it. i feel like the technical and scientific aspects of baking could've been brought up a little bit more. for the same reason, i was surprised that chris made it into the competition. baby girl, it's chocolate and cream, just two ingredients melted together, so how are you here when you don't know how to make ganache?
i also think that when it came to the racism shireen and chris experienced could've been delved into more. the same goes for the fatphobia shireen mentions she experiences. neither are fleshed out, the character's feelings about these topics were a little glossed over.
one last thing i thought i'd mention, though it didn't have much influence on my final rating: i listened to the audiobook and found it a little strange that all the characters had accents while speaking except for shireen and chris. i didn't notice it during the narration, but i definitely felt it in the dialogues.
despite these things i didn't like, at the end of it i'm left with positive feelings about it. this was definitely a cute, heartwarming read. light and fun. perfect for pride month.

this book isn't "what the fuck did i just read" in a good way, rather in the most horrible way possible. it's shocking just to be shocking.
on the positive side: it's not the worst writing, and if you squint you can see some decent insight into the incel psyche. on the negative: the insight doesn't feel like it's purposefully written. oh, and everything else.
p.s. the woman's saliva and white discharge get described as slime while he describes her vagina like a "snail's cunt". do with all that what you will.

I really loved how it began, the first chapter was so successful at providing intrigue that I was sure that I was going to finish this book in one day and love every minute of it. But it started going downhill very quickly as I felt as though the writing suddenly changed the tone after the first chapter. The plot is absurd and has the potential to be very fun and funny, however the execution of it fails. So do the characters who felt very one-dimensional to me. The romance wasn't my cup of tea either. I was left with the impression that the lead characters — Trixie and Bear — had no chemistry between them so everything that transpires between them, including the friendship they have before they hook up (which comes out of nowhere) and later decide to date feels off. This book wasn't for me. I hope that someone out there enjoys it much more.

The main character was so realistically written and so relatable that I couldn't help but feel for her throughout the book. I loved her attitude and views. The book is very realistic with the other characters too, especially the boys that are a part of June's life, and I must note that she deserves so much better than them. The writing flows well, the tone is just beautiful. I wish some of the themes were expanded on a bit more, but it works nicely as it is too.

The writing is light and easy to consume, and the pacing is pretty good and consistent for the most of the book, only speeding up near the end. I liked the dynamics between the characters, though I didn't quite connect to them. I found that a lot was kinda convenient for the characters. Also, it might be just a pet peeve of mine when the main character is great at everything and is clueless about it at the same time. I didn't like that bit. However, the book is fun and enjoyable. It wasn't the greatest choice for me but I think that other readers will love it.
