I would recommend it to anyone who has seen The Batman and wants to see more of the Riddler. Making something like this is a gamble. For one thing, it is intended as a prequel to The Batman. Any prequel comes with a set of difficulties, it can demystify the original by giving too much information, it can feel like the stakes aren't there because we know where the story leads to etc. But this is also Paul Dano's first comicbook. It is written by the actor who played the Riddler and while actors may come up with more details to help their performance, it is not guaranteed that those details will work when transferred to the page, especially if done by someone who lacks experience. But boy, does it work. This book is simply beautiful. It is a great psychological drama. And everything from Dano's writing to Subić's art brilliantly presents the Riddler's tortured soul and descent into madness prior to the events of the movie, all the while thinking he's a hero on the side of Batman. It is a little weird that it is titled Year One as Year One books usually give origin stories of characters in the comicbook continuity or maybe outside of continuity. I don't know what this means for the comicbook Riddler. Will he be made to be more like this version of the Riddler or was the title given just to attract readers? I guess if anything, Dano's Riddler overshadowing the original really speaks to his performance and the quality of the movie he's in. This might just be the best Year One book out there. That's not really saying much though, as most of them are just cashing in on the name of Batman: Year One. But it's true and the book is good in its own right, not just because other books lowered my expectations....more

The book suffers greatly from being a three issue summary of a film that is already condensing a lot of the book and gets rid of a lot of subtleties. The book suffers greatly from being a three issue summary of a film that is already condensing a lot of the book and gets rid of a lot of subtleties. This is the most bare bones version of the story and the middle especially takes a dip in quality because of it. BUT the flaws that result from this are kind of inevitable, it seems well executed for what it is and it does scratch that Dune itch. It's a quick read, so why not read it if you enjoyed both the book and Lynch's film?...more

It's not bad, but it really is just promotional material. Twenty something pages really isn't enough to retell the story and as it is presented here, somebody who hasn't already seen the show wouldn't really understand it. This makes me wonder if the story could be properly adapted in a comicbook format, but we have this and it's alright....more
