I love stories that follow sisters so I was super intrigued by a story that follows a girl dealing with her sister being a serial killer.
However, I feel like because it was the sister who was the serial killer, a lot of the ‘action’ of the book is written off the page… like we kind of just see the events after they’ve already happened. For that reason it didn’t feel super thriller-like, it felt more like a family drama kind of story. Also a lot of the reviews are claiming this is dark humor, but I personally didn’t find anything humorous about the story? Maybe it just went over my head, but it was lost on me.
But I really enjoyed the end of this book, and I appreciate how fast-paced this story was, (I’m a huge fan of short chapters like this haha) even though I do wish the story itself was a little longer so I could learn more about these characters....more

I am super intrigued by the concept of this book, but I listened to this on audio and I wanted to love it so badly, but this book just wasn’t for me. I am super intrigued by the concept of this book, but the execution of it just fell so flat for me and I thought it was either really boring or really cringe-y, and the main character drove me nuts at some parts.
I also learned something about my reading taste, because I always thought I enjoyed reading about famous people dealing with fame, but I realized I don’t like stories that follow people that go viral and become super internet famous overnight. I prefer to read about famous people like actors/directors or musicians, rather than internet famous people ...more

I was seeing so many negative reviews from friends it was making me nervous, and while I did find some of this book to be a little too confusing to follow with the heavy sci-fi and info dumping at times, I really enjoyed the sister relationship in this. There was also a pretty shocking twist toward the end that I didn't see coming, which elevated the book for me.

I think this book has a really important message for young adults, but some of this book just fell flat for me. Charlie could be so naive at times it would have me rolling my eyes, but that’s probably just a me problem since this book is intended for young adults. I guess I was just a bit underwhelmed by the end of it, I just wanted more from this story. ...more

I think I would’ve enjoyed this a ton though in elementary school or middle school.

A trans main character competing with his ex-boyfriend for homecoming King? It sounded like the cute fluffy hate to love rom-com I needed. But this was anything but that. I found the main characters to be really frustrating and hard to root for. They were super mean to each other, and they crossed the line so many times and did things to each other that were just.... not okay. There's also a whole list of trigger warnings that I did not expect, other reviewers have done a great job of listing all of them, but this book was definitely a lot darker than I was expecting, and isn't a light fun rom-com like the cover implies.
I highly encourage you to read reviews from trans reviewers for this book, but I was personally so disappointed by this and that makes me sad....more

This book makes me want to reread the book Fangirl all over again. I’m a HUGE lover of Fangirl, I’ve read it three times, and Cath is easily one of my most relatable characters of all time. With that being said, I do feel like this reads better as a novel, because you really get more into Caths head with her in her thoughts. But I would highly recommend this manga if you are already familiar with the story of Fangirl. I don’t think I’d recommend this if you haven’t read the book Fangirl yet. But damn I loved it. Also I didn’t think Caths Dad would be so young and attractive??? The fuck is that about? Haha. They also drew Levi in a really attractive golden boy way that I wasn’t expecting?? But I love it..? Can’t wait to read the next volume of this!

Jackson, and I’m super impressed. Lately I’ve been avoiding all things YA, but I’ve been recommended this book so many times I finally decided to listen to the audiobook, and I’m so glad I did. This story is heartbreaking and touching and so powerful. We follow this young girl named Claudia who’s best friend Monday goes missing, and she is trying to figure out why it seems like nobody cares.
I was really intrigued by the mystery of where Monday went, but I also just really adored their friendship in this book. I also had a friendship like this in high school where you’re just really close with one person and your friendship is all consuming and without them you feel lost and like you lost a part of yourself too, so this hit really close to home in that aspect of it. This story is getting a lot of criticism because of the amount of time the author spends developing this characters in flashbacks as opposed to building the mystery, but I thought the flashbacks were great and only made me care so much more about the characters. I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style she did with the chapters going: ‘before, after, before the before,” because it made it a little confusing at times but since I was listening to it on audio it didn’t bother me as much as it probably would have if I read it physically.
The ending was shocking and I know I probably should’ve seen it coming but I didn’t, and I was nearly crying listening to the audiobook while I was driving. I can’t wait to check out more books from this author!...more

Maybe it's because I'm not super into young adult anymore, but I don't know I expected to love this book because of the comparison to Knives Out. This book follows3.5 stars This was one of my most anticipated horror books of the year so I was so incredibly stoked when Adam sent me a review copy! This book follows this girl named Quinn who is moving to a small town called Kettle Springs. Her and her Dad are looking for a fresh start and this is where they decide to live, but the town is strange. She becomes friends with this group of teens who stream their pranks online and it drives the older crowd in the town insane.
This book was a fun slasher horror, it felt straight out of a teen horror movie, and I really liked that about this. It has all the Halloween vibes and the writing is so vivid with its imagery of cornfields and barns and clowns. It also has a lot of graphic violence that I was surprised by because usually young adult books never go that far, but this one definitely went there and I appreciated that. I also read most of this book in the dark for the readathon I'm doing right now so that added to the creepiness of it.
My only disappointment with this one is I guess I went in with false expectations, I thought the clown aspect of this book was going to be more of a supernatural thing, as opposed to someone dressing up as a clown and acting as a serial killer. I thought the clown thing would be some kind of unknown creature like Pennywise or something, instead of just a human dressing up as a clown, but regardless I still had fun with it. This book is nonstop action at the end and it was highly entertaining. I didn't really connect with any of the characters in this book, but in a slasher story like this I don't think you really need to to enjoy the story. ...more
