I'm tired of reading stories about weird "misunderstood" men sexualizing women in the creepiest way. I am not the audience for this book, I wanted it to get way more creepy or weird or interesting, but instead we spent most of the story in the head of this weird guy who is sexualizing one of his female friends. I was bored and I wanted more. I don't think this is the author for me tbh....more

The beginning started out so strong, but then after the first 20% I got so bored with this story. This book is supposed to be a horror book, but it reads much more like a police procedural mystery, and the POV of our protagonist who is a detective really started to bore me after a while. I think this author was trying to do too much with all the different tropes crammed into the second half of this book.

It had fun vibes at the start, I was sure it would be a new favorite, but sadly after about 100 pages in, the story got boring for me. There was a lot of action happening, but the story lacked any suspense, and I just didn't care about what was happening. This book compares itself to Ready or Not, and while I get the comparison, I think this book is like a watered down way less interesting version of Ready or Not.
Ugh, I really wanted to love this, but this writing style did not work for me. I'm usually a big fan of grief horror and body horror, and while I did enjoy those things about this book, the writing itself just wasn't that great (in my opinion). The horror elements of this book were done so well, lots of gory descriptions of this character peeling off his skin, it made me a little squeamish at times, which is what I want out of a book like this, but I also couldn't stand any of the characters, especially his brother. There was also a story within a story element to this book, and those chapters also bored me, and I found it got so repetitive with the rereading some of the same chapters from the story over and over again. This just didn't work for me sadly....more

I was very fascinated by Ellie's chapters which were taking place in the past, and I liked alternating timelines between the past and the present day after she returns. There were some things I really loved about this book, but unfortunately, I found it to be just okay. The writing style was so repetitive and clunky at times -- it just didn't flow very naturally, and while I appreciated some of the social commentary, some of it was just sooooo on the nose. The ending was also a little far-fetched for me.

I usually love horror that involves a character dealing with grief, but this book just really didn't work for me. I wasn't a fan of the writing style; it got so repetitive with him constantly bringing up his father and memories from the past. This book is only about 25% about him getting swallowed by the whale and 75% of him talking about his father and the issues they had. I just didn't connect with this one emotionally the way I was hoping to, and I wanted the story to feel more suspenseful than it did.

Maybe this is a me thing, because slashers are very hit or miss for me (mostly miss), but I wanted to read this one anyway since I have loved other books from this author, and I love books about filming movies! But this book had the most obnoxious cast of characters, I really disliked all of them and I understand that that was probably the point, but not only were they unlikable, but they were also so incredibly one dimensional. By the time horrific things started happening to them I just didn't care. I also think the story takes a long time to get going, nearly 100 pages in before the action and plot starts to pick up and it's only a 230-page book. I was hoping to connect with this more, but this book was just not for me. I do still plan to read more from this author in the future though, I want to check out his new release Rotten Tommy, maybe that'll be more up my alley.

I was a big fan of this authors debut novel when I read it a few years ago, and I’ve been in my self-proclaimed *vampire era* in this last year and I thought I was going to love this! But I just didn’t connect with it the way I was hoping to. I LOVED the beginning, I was convinced it would be a new favorite, but I found so much of this story to be so boring, and I didn’t really feel any chemistry with the romance. I love the concept of this book, I love the idea of vampires that are written about in a popular book series being real, but the execution of this story wasn’t my favorite.
I also didn’t like that the tone felt all over the place, at times it was so serious when talking about our protagonist’s past, she is a survivor of sexual assault and it gets brought up constantly anytime she has any romantic scenes, but then in the next scene the tone of the book feels more silly and campy and kind of cheesy? It just didn’t really work for me. Some scenes kind of read like fanfiction for other vampire franchises, and some of the mixed media elements of this book got annoying after a while. I don’t think this book needs to be 400 pages long, it really started to drag after a while. ...more

I love books that follow writers, and I loved the atmosphere in this book of New York City and her taking on a job writing as a columnist for the newspaper. But there were about four "twists" at the end of this book, and I predicted every single thing that happened. It felt really obvious to me, and I wasn't sure why the main character wasn't picking up on what was happening, so that's a bummer.

I have loved so many books from Kristin Hannah, so I assumed this one would be the same, but there were a few reasons this book didn't work for me.
For some reason, I found it hard to connect with Frankie as a protagonist, I feel like there wasn't much more to her character other than being a nurse. It just kind of felt like she lacked a personality most of the time. This book is really dark and sad and hard to read (obviously because it's about war) and this is definitely a me-thing, I just don't love reading about war in historical fiction, it's so hard to stomach and knowing people actually experienced this shit makes it harder. I respect what this book stands for and that it acknowledges the unique struggles women faced during this time -- but it was also really difficult to read at times.
I also was not a fan of any of the romance happening in this book. So many times, I was cringe-ing and wondering why, I just couldn't get invested in the romances. And it took up so much of the story, especially in the second half. Most of the ending I appreciated, and thought was really beautiful, but there was one scene I was like.... are you fucking serious. I just felt like I couldn't suspend my disbelief that many times.

I was so invested in this astrological retreat and the characters were so interested, but I couldn't care less about the character Rini (the host) and her back story, which took up so much of the story. It also started to feel more like romance and marriage drama between all these people, which had me losing interest very quickly. The ending was decent, but it didn't really wow me either.
Also, as a Capricorn, I was sad that there were no Capricorns in this lol. We get 8 characters with 8 different signs, but Capricorns were not one of them lol. (Neither were Gemini's, Libra's, or Sagittarius's)

This author has been mostly hit or miss for me, but I always get excited to read her books at this time of year because they're so fun! But this book was not fun. The characters were so annoying, the best friend was literally the worst and her peer pressure that pushed the protagonist into dangerous situations all the time was so annoying. The main character was such a pushover and let every person in her life walk all over her, she had no backbone. By the end of the book I was like oh, it's over? I just didn't feel connected to these characters or what was happening to them at all. I also feel like this reads like the most generic vampire story ever, if you've read any vampire fiction, this one is going to read mostly the same and not bring anything new to the table.
I also think the audiobook was so annoying, the way the narrator would change her levels of volume so much so some scenes I'd have to turn up the audiobook just to hear what she's saying, she was basically mumbling under her breath and then the next chapter she's screaming, it was so annoying. Also, I didn't like the way she narrated the best friend while she was drunk, the slurred valley girl type of voice was incredibly annoying to listen to.
