There are great explanations of different types of make-up, like liquid vs cream vs powder foundation and why you might use each of them. The section on identifying your skin type was super helpful and explained in a way I'd never heard it before. The illustrations are cute and lovely, and also really help to demonstrate the various techniques. I might need a physical copy of this book to keep near my make-up just to use from time to time as a refresher on a few things!!

This is a great middle-grade level non-fiction book about the history of mermaids, focusing strongly on the myths and legends on which they're based. This books collects legends and myths from all over the world. I particularly appreciated that they even talk about sirens and how this creature that was originally described as being part bird part woman came to be linked to mermaids. It also includes records of historical mermaid "sightings" and artifacts, as well as explanations for what people may have actually seen and mistaken for mermaids (manatees, dugongs, kayakers...), mermaid landmarks, fake mermaids in circus side-shows and the like... All in all, it's a VERY comprehensive history of mermaids! I love the section on mermaids in modern culture - mermaid foods, mermaid performers, mermaids in the movies, and even a guide for DIY mermaid hair!...more

I love that the base pattern (head, body, arms and legs) is the same for all the dolls, and you can mix and match the embroider templates for the faces and embellishments, the type of animal ears, and the outfits to make many different characters. There are templates for several different animals, but if you wanted you could make a whole family of foxes using the basic pattern, the fox ears, and different face patterns from the other characters as well as different colors of fabric and beads for the fox embellishments. What a creative idea! The book is really well put together, with amazingly clear step by step guides and illustrations on every step, whether the technique is machine sewing, hand stitching, or embroidery. There's also a section at the back of the book with step by step picture instructions on how to do various embroidery stitches used in the face and embellishment patterns, and it is the best and clearest written set of instructions for embroidery I've seen. ...more

Each rug pattern comes with coordinating accessory patterns, so in addition to a cute rug you can also make a matching stool cover or book bag or pillow.
Each pattern is clearly labeled with the skill level as well as the finished size, tools and materials needed, stitches and skills used, and even whether the pattern is left-handed compatible.
I love that the animals include a giraffe, elephant, monkey, dinosaur, crab, panda, and a cat. There's also a section on basic shapes, like eyes and bows and things, so between the various shapes available from the existing patterns and these extra basic shapes, a savvy crafter could conceivably craft an even wider array of creatures. I personally have big plans to make a boy and girl crab pillow, with the boy crab having a bow tie and the girl crab having a bow in her "hair."...more

Now that I have kids of my own, I like to put on old episodes for them as well as the spin-off/reboot, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. I love that so many kids' shows focus on learning, and Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood focuses not so much on linguistic and mathematical learning but instead on interpersonal and intrapersonal learning, as well as a focus on functional, musical, and even existential lessons. It was extremely interesting to learn more about the man behind the sweater - and what a wonderful revelation to find that the Mr. Rogers we saw on TV was the real and true him.
The Good Neighbor is a truly deep dive into the life and work of Fred Rogers - sometimes a little TOO deep. Maxwell King has a tendency to give the reader a very thorough background on several people who were key in Rogers' life. While it makes sense to go into the background of his wife, Joanne, including where she was born, where her parents come from, and how she grew up, I feel the book could have done without that information for pretty much ANYONE who had an impact on Rogers' life. It got to the point that the book is talking about this teacher and mentor of Fred's and who her parents were and where she grew up and why SHE went into child development, and I'm sitting there reading like "...Who cares?" It just added a lot of what I feel is unnecessary bulk and filler to what is otherwise a very compelling book.
That being said, I really appreciate that King doesn't shy away from sharing Fred's imperfections. Fred got mad sometimes, could be oblivious, he could be stubborn, he didn't always know how to handle his own children - and that's OK, because he was a human man! He wasn't perfect - and we loved him, just the way he was. The most compelling parts of this book for me were the insight into Fred's childhood and the way he grew up, as well as the parts of the book that focus on the many ways Fred touched so many lives. ...more

I do wish there had been a few more recipes for each literary source so you could have (for example) a Winnie the Pooh themed party., As it stands, the only books that have themed parties in the themed party idea section are Alice in Wonderland and The Chronicles of Narnia, with Redwall having enough recipes to probably be able to do a Redwall party too. I'd want an Anne of Green Gables tea party, and there are only two Anne of Green Gables recipes. Recipes list a tea pairing if there is a corresponding tea blend. I'd have liked to see some suggested tea pairings in general that aren't customer blends from the book (even just if it goes best with a particular type of herbal, or a green tea, or English Breakfast, or...)
This book is a lovely blend of recipes straight from the stories (like the Turkish Delight from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) as well as several that are more inspired by literature (like the Queen of Hearts' Painted Rose Cupcakes)....more
