This novel would appeal to adult readers who enjoyed Riordan's Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus series. Philip Pullman’s Once Upon a Time in the North calls for dead reckoning at an elemental level. In this prequel to His Dark Materials trilogy, there is no golden compass (a.k.a. alethiometer) and no Lyra Silvertongue. In a time before her birth, Lee Scoresby has just come north from the Dakotas, where he won a navigable ballon in a questionable card game. The fact that he is missing vital pages from the Elements of Aerial Navigation manual that came with the balloon has not stopped him from turning aeronaut and somehow, finding the Barrents Sea Company Depot in a storm. It does, however, provide unnecessary challenges for his proposed landing, as does the lack of a wrench to use on the stuck gas-valve.
Unholstering a rusted-up revolver, Scoresby bashes the valve into submission and negotiates a plunge-to-earth-style landing, which also serves to get the opening pages subtlety out of the way allowing Pullman to range freely and directly in a book that is little in size only. This is Pullman’s own antidote to complexity. Good is good and bad is mostly anything that deals with Larsen Manganese, an arctic mining company.
Not that everything is exactly straightforward. The belle of the boarding house dinner table is not the local schoolmarm but the local librarian, and why wouldn’t she be? Moreover, Lee Scoresby’s daemon has been wrong about her own identity for her entire life heretofore. Iorek Byrnison and Lee Scoresby meet and become friends in the course of mispronouncing each other’s names as well as saving each other’s lives. Name mispronunciation appears to have been the bigger issue for them. And Scoresby breaks his own heart losing any chance he may have had (slim to none) in wooing said librarian by trying to provide sage advice.
It is about as unexpected a Pullman story as an aeronaut or any of us could ever expect. One of those books you read twice in a row because how could you not. Comes complete with a Pullman created board game in the back pocket and a series of end notes that are a story in themselves. – Steven S.

The characters are really put together almost in a familiar way. I felt, cared, and rooted for them. What they went through is very real and relatable, in so many ways; regardless of the fantastical world around them. Sanderson does a really good job with world and character building. I also left this book with all of my queries answered as the author put everything together for us with a bow on top.
A couple of my favorite non-spoiling quotes:
“Trauma doesn’t decrease with company, but it does grow easier to work through when you know someone else understands.“
“Art is about feelings and emotion. It is about letting them escape, so they can be shared. It is about capturing a truth about yourself. Like you are ripping a hole in your chest and exposing your soul.“

The book follows a gang of misfit teens trying to figure out their way through complex situations that range from family problems to breaking into the world's highest security prison. I was a big fan of how the main (and side) characters interacted with not only the people around them but the world and how their personalities were highlighted through that. This book has a great mix of high-energy scenes that leave you on the edge of your seat and complex interpersonal scenes. The book has some romance but not too much that it draws the focus away from the actual plot events, which I was glad for. The book has good LGBTQ rep and very well-written characters. This book is directed towards more mature readers as there are a lot of darker and mature events and themes present throughout the book. Anyone who loves fantasy elements, darker tones, high thrill and emotional events, and well-written and personalized characters will love this book. Captains, civilians, and soldiers must suddenly work together to fight for their people against dangers seen and soon to be revealed. Did I mention the cats? There are also wise tough-talking cats among a great cast of characters that protect the airships and spires from a myriad of dangers. I mean, if that’s not a great hook, I don’t know what is!
Jim Butcher has a knack for knowing the human condition and writing it with the most amusing, wry, cunning, and keen dialog. As much fun as it is to experience the world-building along with the natural and learned human abilities in this universe, Butcher also goes deep. He uses this world and these unforgettable personalities to pose comments and questions regarding one’s physical and inner strength, the perception of reality, democracy, traditions, and even such heavier subjects as combat guilt.

Aya and Will are the stars of the show in this story, albeit not the only important narratives. They are embarking on their own paths and trying to find a way to save not only themselves, but the Truth. Which is humorous considering they constantly hold secrets from each other and fight along the way. However, how would you feel if the person you secretly loved, turned out to be one of the most powerful entities alive?
This read points the finger consistently and we don’t know the true villain until the end of the story. The character building is pretty good, and I felt connected to all of them. Even the ones who appeared shady. I also loved how the main character, Aya, wasn’t the only one to be deemed ‘special’ or ‘uniquely gifted with powers’ in this read. The spotlight wasn’t always on her, which allows the reader to be able to really get into the world and have empathy for more than one character.
This story also had so many amazing quotes: “And when you were lost to rage, you made a choice. You sacrificed yourself to save others. That is not a choice that yields a soul to darkness. Nor is it the choice of someone whose true nature is purely dark. Both live within you as they do in all of us. Your power does not decide - you do.” Yes, there are more of this throughout the book and they just sit with you. This book is purely delightful. Viv, a battle orc, sets her blade aside to create a quaint coffeeshop (gnomes’ beans are truly divine) and hopes dearly her newest acquirement from battle will lend her a little luck in the bean business.

Many of the classics, such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, praise the bravery and brutality of men in war but fail to account for tragedies inflicted upon society as a result. I love how Haynes frames the story from the perspective of one of the Muses singing to a mortal man (potentially Homer?), urging him to recount the reality of the lives of women in wartime, which are equally as important as the warriors.
