1. There was insta love that made absolutely no sense. One second she’s watching a strange man break into her apartment and then the next they’re fucking. (Not in a cool, stalker, dark romance kind of way either. It was super random and confusing.) It would make more sense if they were fated mates, but as far as I got into the story that wasn’t mentioned at all.
2. There were way too many characters introduced in such a short period of time.
3. The spice was very mediocre and not special. But maybe back when it was published it was considered to be super hot?
4. There’s so much world building (sloppy, confusing world building in my opinion). And too much going on for a vampire romance novel.
5. The writing and story felt super dated. I could tell as I read this that it was an older book. The way it reads reminded me of the feeling I get when I turn on a movie I haven’t seen before from the 90s.
6. The MMC reminded me of Blade (from the movie) which I wasn’t into at all. And his name was Wrath which I also thought was weird.
7. Lastly, I didn’t find myself caring about a single character in this book. None of them felt real, interesting, or like able.
I understand that this series has a cult like following. I know they are die hard fans, but I just don’t see the hype and I can’t get through it. I tried ebook and audio versions.
There wasn’t a single thing that I found myself enjoying about the story.
Maybe if I had to read it back when it came out I would have appreciated it more. But at this point, I’ve read too many vampire romances to like this one. ...more

I read the Dracula duet by this author and I feel in love with it so hard that this duet just couldn’t compare.
I didn’t really get interested in the story and I didn’t feel connected to any of the characters. It pretty much fell right out of my head after I read it.
I’d HIGHLY recommend Blood Orange though (from the Dracula duet) it was everything I ever wanted in a steamy, gothic, vampire romance. ...more

I’m so thankful that books like The Vampyre, Carmilla, and Dracula existed or else we probably wouldn’t have the gothic vampire novels and vampire romances that I absolutely live for.
But apparently not even vampires can make me like the classics.
I really had to force myself through this.
I struggled with the language, I found it super boring, and now that it’s been months later, if you asked me what happened in this book today, I would have absolutely no idea....more

I also couldn’t stop talking to my husband about it for days.
I will say this book required a lot of patience because of the way the MMC was acting and the choices he made. But it all made sense for his character.
I don’t want to go into any details otherwise I’d spoil Blood Orange for my friends that haven’t read it yet. So I’ll leave it at that.
This duet is super good though and I will definitely be rereading it again. ...more
