"Wolf Hall" is uncompromising in it's storytelling. It helps to know a little bit about the characters, time, and place before embarking. That said, if you put yourself in the author's hands you won't be disappointed. You learn along the way that almost every reference to the pronoun "he," refers to Thomas Cromwell. We first meet Cromwell as an abused son of a blacksmith. Soon enough, we begin to trace his path, his rise, to trusted aide to Cardinal Wolsey, and then the King Henry VIII himself. The internecine machinations of all the players - the deceptions, the losses, the desires- resonate with bald humanity. I'm looking forward to continuing the tale by reading "Bring Up the Bodies."
