Honestly, I wasn't planning on reading this so soon but I was in the mood for something like that and I thought (in the literal spur of the moment) to give it a shot.
From the very beginning I can say that this is the atmosphere I enjoy immersing myself into from time to time: this Gothic, slightly cold and unapproachable, weird and witchy kind of vibe that makes up the books that are not for everyone but they are for me. So for the whole vibe this book gets 5 stars, I truly enjoyed that.
Even though the vibe of the genre was great, I can't say much about the time of the story. Maybe I wasn't paying much attention to the temporal details, but I was kind of confused by the time in which we found ourselves, it felt like a 1800s Gothic witch-hunt in New Orleans but at the same time it felt kind of new and fresh too? I don't know, I got confused, I was sitting on the edge every time I encountered some random detail indicating a period of time. I would very much enjoy some enlightenment.
Moving on to the world building, what I can say for sure is that when the author thought of a games and trials plot, she served us a games and trials plot. The whole book was carefully integrated into the trials the main character, Ophelia Grimm, has to pass and even though I know they were hard and dangerous, they were also the reason I kept my interest up, turning page after page. The trials and games were fun for me, as a reader.
Now, I know you've seen my rating above and you're asking why is that, I only had good things to say about this book...well. Hold on. I'm getting there right now.
I can't say that I was very fond of the characters. They felt a little bit undeveloped to me, I couldn't really connect much to any of them. Personally, our male MC, Blackwell, was the kind of guy I like - mischievous, a literal devil in attitude and charm, but he would praise our girl and spoil her and be there for her at literally every step of the way. I do love me a man like that. Ophelia, however, was a tad bit irking me. She took some stupid rash decisions and then panic like hell and, to be fair, without her calling for Blackwell to help, she would've been dead 10 times over in those trials. Although, as an OCD girly myself, I can understand so many of her thinking patterns, even though hers were a little bit more emphasised and extreme than what I experience on a daily (and thank god I don't).
All in all I enjoyed it, I kept turning the page because I was very curious to see what will come next and where will everything go. The spice was quite nice, very enjoyable and written without overly excessive explicit lines and the climax of the plot was a nice touch too, I enjoy a little throwback in the story from time to time. If you're into this kind of paranormal dark romance story with a nice gothic atmosphere, I think Phantasma will definitely be your vibe!...more
