this was exactly what i signed up for!! entertaining to the max, some lovable characters, a couple vaguely shocking plot twists, and a fun, easy, romantasy read. plus a dark-haired, traumatised, initially-rude-but-constantly-obsessed-with-fmc, shadow wielding, protective love interest. it's a pretty classic mould, one could say overused, but i don't care because IT HITS EVERY TIME! the fmc was snarky, a special snowflake, grew up poor and had to care for her brother - another classic mould, but again, i will always eat it up.
i knew what to expect going into this book (typical romantasy book), but that's what i was looking for, and it gave me exactly that! plus we had a cute little animal companion, a brief but lovely female friendship, and some cool magic powers. all in all, highly satisfied and entertained!...more

Oh this was just too much fun. Such an enjoyable, lighthearted, quick read - I loved every page, and was truly swept up into this fast paced adventure full of loveable characters (loveable enough I’m actually planning to read the spinoffs ?!), men who are absolute simps, happy endings and a bit of spice. For my girlies who need a break from angst!! And this is a bold claim, but I truly believe that this Flynn lived up to the Flynn name - he gave off enough Flynn Rider vibes to really hit the spot. And that is a high, high compliment.

Our fmc was a cutie patootie indeed - ready to do what she had to to protect her family, but dreaming of adventure and escapes from 1800s London. I thought she was such a bright, easy to enjoy protagonist, and humorous too. Her banter with our mmc was just too cute - they had such a fun vibe going with so much chemistry, they constantly made me giggle.

Our mmc was the perfect book boyfriend for an easy read like this one - protective, funny, trying-to-overthrow-the-monarchy-and-save-the-peoples-Robin-Hood-style, plus a massive simp! We always love a dark haired pirate who’s fully obsessed and devoted to our fmc without any drama. The dream!

not sure why my rh girlies haven't got a hold of this one yet - it was everything i needed! kickass fmc who took no crap and was smart as hell, a captivating plotline, and some easy to obsess over (and very obsessed themselves) mmcs. plus plenty of spice! so easy to read and adore.
and while the plot-twists were in no way shocking for me, i didn't even mind, because i still had so much fun watching them track down the serial killer. always an entertaining plot. plus i loved and adored how this book didn't end on a massive cliffhanger, despite being book 1 of 3 - thank you author, for not becoming part of the rh cliffhanger epidemic.
my skill at starting unfinished series with cliffhangers is truly unparalleled…

I will admit that I thought this would be much cozier and more of a low-stakes fantasy… it was honestly more stress inducing than I thought, but that’s alright! Still lots of fun.
But I was definitely disappointed by the lack of rivals to lovers vibes… they were barely rivals?? Where was my banter and competitiveness?? Still, had it not been marketed as rivals to lovers, I would have adored the romance without complaint. I still really enjoyed their development and relationship.
All in all, different to what I expected, but fun!...more

I adored this book! I don’t think it was my absolute favourite of Mallory Dunlin’s books, just because it took me a little longer to warm up to the main character than usual, but I really grew to love the story. Dunlin’s stories are usually fairly character driven, but also have an overarching plot that’s fairly interesting, and this book was no different. I was simultaneously captivated by the political intrigue and minor murder-mystery vibes, and the flourishing relationship between our two MCs. And, as always, Dunlin put so much effort into the worldbuilding, with clothing designs that work for our darling amalgam, and fascinating magic.

It is such an insane series - at no stage do I have any idea what will happen next, but I love it. I do have to say ”jane washington you monster!” for the happenings of around 46% through this book… I went from ecstatic joy to pure misery and I did not appreciate it! But this book was a great addition to the series, undeniably - fun, so much progression romance wise, and Isobel had some brilliant character development. Overall, this was just super enjoyable, and such a comfort read. Plus amazing female friends, and super loveable side characters!! Everything in this book was a win.
