I'll just start there. I love him more in the second book. He's just sooooo perfectly characterized. I love his assholish sense of humor. Loves how he is SO brave! So STRONG! Despite everything he has to struggle with. He's such a MAN!!
Not manly enough to be Ilya but there's the curls at least.
And I have a thing for Russian men. Russian men are the most masculine manly men in the universe! But only when they are GOOD men like Ilya. He is soooo soooo GOOD.
BTW I was soooo happy I got a little Ilya ass action. Wish it was the full shebang, but lovely to know he's in touch with his inner prostate.
As you can see from my status updates below, I'm annoyed, irritated, frustrated by Shane throughout this book. He DID take Ilya for granted. I wanted him to grovel and beg and plead and do a GRAND gesture to truly deserve Ilya.
But then I realized, it's not necessary. Even tho the way their secret came out was sort of anticlimatic, the way Shane handled it was... respectable. I'm glad there was no unnecessary angst. I'm glad he stood up for them despite his worries. And he's a worrier through and through. If he reacted badly as I was fully expecting I would have thrown my kindle out the window in protest.
So, I'm actually glad how things turned out and evolved.
And you can't ask for a better ending than that. I would have liked a second epilogue where they're having sex in their shared trophy room where they have an obscene number of Stanley Cups together, but...

************** SPOILERS AHEAD for those of you who haven't read anything in the series, so continue at your own discretion!!! ***************
This story is a re-envisioning of the Arthurian Legends. AJ started this spin-off series of the Pure/ Dark Ones https://www.goodreads.com/series/8550... with
[image]
, where we get a glimpse of this alternate universe in which Guinevere is the ultimate baddie.
But what about Arthur and Lancelot? I definitely wanted to read more about them since book 1, in which they were nothing more than zombies controlled by the evil queen.
Never would I have imagined that Arthur and Lancelot could be a couple. Yeah, I always felt bad for their ruined friendship because of the woman in between them (what happened to bros before hoes??)
So I am absolutely DELIGHTED that they are actually fated mates! In this book, we get their story, both the backstory of how they met and their relationship developed, as well as how Guiny came between them, and now how they're dealing with all of their tribulations and trying to give each other the freedom to find themselves again.
Isn't setting someone free the purest form of love? And if they come back to you, they love you too?
Well, that's the theme here.
There's a lot of water under the bridge, so Arthur and Lance have a lot to work through. The angry hate-sex is scorching HOTTTT!! Bc underneath, there's enduring love. AJ writes the BEST MM sex scenes (and honestly sex scenes in general, but in my view in particular the MM ones). Love always underpins the sex in her books and it's very obvious. None of the sex is about just sex. Sometimes it's about power or retribution or bonding or etc. But it's never just lust-induced mindless sex. It's always a kind of communication or communion and I LOVE IT!!!
There's a lot more that goes on in this installment than just Arthur and Lance, though this couple takes center stage. There's the family bonding between the Pendragons. There's planning for the war to come. There are DRAGONS of course!!
I won't say WHO is the dragon, you will have to read to find out. And when you do, it will be GLORIOUS!!

All of the shelf descriptions I have for this book scratch my every itch. This book ticks ALL of my love-starved boxes!!
We have the ALPHA hero who is: beautiful, protective, loving unconditionally, deep-voiced and deep-feeling, knows what he wants, proud but not arrogant, confident but not condescending (or somesuch, AJ wrote it better). He's EVERYTHING my dream alpha male husband-lover would be!!!
Our beautiful, magnificent SHAI!!!
We have the wise-beyond-her-years yet emotionally underdeveloped heroine, the most successful pharoah in all of Egyptian history! Who (I believe) loved Shai as soon as he loved her, but just didn't know it.
Heba is BADASS. And I LOVE her possessiveness!!
We have in parallel, the urgent search party of Ben, Ere and Sorin to find the Secret Gift, and in the process help Heba and Shai be together.
ANd y'all! It's set in EGYPT!!! The mysterious, gorgeous, magical place of EGYPT!!!!!
The PASSION! The HOTTTTTTT SEX!!! The pining and wishing and pulling and pushing between the MCs... PERFECTION! And ultimately, the LOVE!
It's visceral! You can feel it! I'm swooning from it!
You have to read it for yourself to understand. Think about it:
A queen and her slave. A pharoah and her captain of the guard. A love that burns between them that can't see the light of day. What will they do? What is their secret? How can they overcome all odds to be together????
All right, thanks for convincing me to read this, Midra! I LOVED IT!
(I could have used a whole lot more sexy times but I get it. For most of the book All right, thanks for convincing me to read this, Midra! I LOVED IT!
(I could have used a whole lot more sexy times but I get it. For most of the book they were kids. Teens, but still kids.... EVEN SO...)
The story told from Ox's POV is perfect. I don't think I would have enjoyed this half as much if it was told from anyone else's POV. Ox is so unique and WONDERFUL. I'm off to buy and read the next one!
Alright, so coming back to beef up this review a bit, now that I have read book 2 (and didn't like it).
The plot is interesting and immediately engrossing, as I said, bc of Ox. I have always loved the underdog so to speak. Ox is just SPECIAL. He's just pure goodness. And so PURE. In terms of his innate strength, protectiveness and capacity to love. You see it right away when he's a little boy. And how his dad left and he immediately tried to step up to support his mom. I think he was SEVEN. I mean... HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE HIM???
He's been bullied his whole life for being "simple." But it's his unique POV on the world, including that simplicity and unselfishness and humility that make him soooooo special.
I just loved his voice. The writing style was unique and engaging (less so in book 2 bc it was no longer "new") and Ox won the show for me. He's my fave character of this series, I don't think this will change as I read more books....more
So.... Red and Annie. I'll start off by saying, it was a pretty wild and unexpected ride, for many different reasons.
Red wasn't what I expected. His So.... Red and Annie. I'll start off by saying, it was a pretty wild and unexpected ride, for many different reasons.
Red wasn't what I expected. His backstory, altho we got a hint of it from
[image]
, is still not quite what I expected. It made sense once you understand his motivations and all that happened, but I was expecting more... I dunno... overall aggression and assertiveness. If Annie wasn't so patient where it mattered, and IMpatient where she needed to push him, I don't know how things would have turned out. I think they would have still gotten together eventually, they are clearly soulmates, but it would have taken longer if Red was in the driver's seat. And that's assuming he didn't kamikase himself before that. He was just really messed up. So... while I feel for Red, he wasn't my fave hero in the series thus far.
Annie was a gem. She's honestly BETTER than what I expected, and so the 2 of them balance out. And maybe that's why they're also such a great fit. She's a firecracker but also go-with-the-flow. She's the new gen of young-uns, but still "traditional" in some ways, an old soul. SHe's just really really likeable. And badass. And saved Red a few times it seems. I love when the woman is strong and can protect her man as much as he protects her.
I love when she took Red to task and gave him a talking to when he needed it. I also love that she doesn't push when she knows he needs to take his own time. Unlike any other book by AJ, this couple after getting together separated (not much on page but off page) a couple of times. Mainly bc Red needed to get his head screwed on straight, which I get. Which is also frankly realistic.
The fact that Annie had the confidence and patience to wait made me really appreciate her!
Then there's the ongoing story - Ben totally taking charge, Ere tagging along and being a fighter for once, Arthur and Lancelot, Seventh Sister... lots going on!
Another wild, enjoyable ride, and very sexy sex scenes :P
What can I say folks? This one hit it out of the park. But you know how I feel about AJ's books. Even so, this one really scratched my many itches. HeWhat can I say folks? NOBODY WRITES MM INTENSE EMOTIONAL EROTIC ROMANCE LIKE AJA JAMES. HANDS DOWN. AMEN.
Sin and Zai were FIRE. Both are alpha males, which is rare to see in MM romance. The most common pairing is alpha with beta (twink), size difference, or both are beta. This is one of the very rare MM romances I've read where BOTH MCs are sooooo alpha and sooooo right for each other. Equals. Partners. In every way. That alone will make me give this book 5 stars.
Add to that, 2 alphas who are also butt virgins???? WOW. checking all my boxes and then some!
But that's just ONE of the many things I love about this book.
THE ACTION JUST DOESN'T STOP.
From page one, you're thrown in the rollercoaster ride and you only get off with wobbly legs at the very end. And then you're so high and dizzy and ADDICTED you want to jump right back on. You want to find out MORE MORE MORE!
What's going on with Ben?? What's next with the JE's games? Quests? Who is the mysterious Seventh Sister??
This was a turning point in the series. The momentum is building like an ocean swell. It's about to come crashing, and I want to be there for it!
Bring it on!!
BE FOREWARNED - READ AJ'S NOTE IN THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK. PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T READ OTHER BOOKS IN BOTH HER SERIES SHOULD PROCEED WITH CAUTION. YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP UP.
Well, it's no surprise this is the most highly rated book in the series. GR does not lie. (Amazon does, but GR doesn't).
It's not perfect tho. But if yWell, it's no surprise this is the most highly rated book in the series. GR does not lie. (Amazon does, but GR doesn't).
It's not perfect tho. But if you take aside that these books don't really have to have plot, and just focus on the developing and evolving relationship between the MCs, Nik and Ben, then you'll be fine.
This is Ben:
This is Nik:
First there was an adventure against sadistic cannibals in Siberia that was much contrived but suspenseful. (view spoiler)[I thought Ben's rape by a giant 7 foot ex-soldier was... not realistically dealt with in the aftermath. But I guess given Nik's history of repeated rape since he was 10, it was dealt with as much as it could have been given relativity (hide spoiler)]
Then, totally unrelated, except the passage of time, there's Ben's own family drama. The only connection through it all is the MC's relationship.
Lots of hot sex scenes. I liked esp. Nik's POV. He's a great anti-hero, while Ben has always just been the shiny, pretty, boy toy to me.
It might be all downhill from here in terms of the rest of the series... we shall see....more

Julie Anne Long is BACK!
I admit I have been worried. She has always been one of my fave HR authors, top 3 for sure! Right up there with Lisa Kleypas and Elizabeth Hoyt (when they were still burning bright, TBD recently).
When JAL started this series, I wasn't terribly keen. I didn't even realize this is book 4, thought it was book 3. The first 2 books I do recall reading and they were...OK. I missed the romance in those books and I felt like there was more love JAL had with her own words than love between the MCs.
Now, THIS book, is not the case. This is CLASSIC JAL!
The focus is on the romance YES!!! From chap 3 when they first met... Oh the tension! The wit! The flawed MCs. And yet so compelling! And how the Hero capitulates in the end with a swoon-worthy declaration of love! CLASSIC!! Historical Romance at its best!
Love love love.
I will be buying this book.
Welcome back JAL!

Being part of the Muses group for Aja James (her beta readers that get to see covers early and read each chapter as she writes it) is a double-edged sword.
You get everything like a year before release and you watch the magic happen live as the author writes it, and you speculate and wonder and theorize and essentially get completely addicted to each little spoonful of story as it comes.
You find yourself begging, harassing, coaxing, pleading, threatening the author to write faster...
You read the most inappropriate parts of the book while you're supposed to be hard at work (and consequently get all your co-workers uncomfortable or too curious when you burst out laughing or crying or have a drooling leer on your face)
As a veteran of Claiming hotties for my harem (see here for the previous series that is linked to this world: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...) I thought I still had more time. I'm kinda betting on even more enticing Heroes (for me, anyway) farther out in the series, but

There are no words to do it justice. So please look at my friends' reviews below.
This is the perfect ending to the most phenomenal fantasy-paranormal romance series I've ever read (and I read a great many of these things). This final book has exceeded all of my expectations and, true to AJ, left me begging for more.
I don't know how to describe the perfect love between Ere and Sorin. I can't tell you how SPECIAL both of them are as individuals and how INCREDIBLE they are together.
I don't read many MM books, because I'm picky about the ones I do read. The only thing that draws me to MM is to get a double dose of MAN. This is what I got in spades in this book, tho both males are so unique and different from each other.
Ere's journey in this book from beginning to end was completely magical and completely RIGHT. Nothing was rushed. Every detail came about in natural evolution. How Sorin gave him strength not by doing things for him but helping and pushing Ere to do for himself... it was beautiful to see. It takes a VERY special love to set Ere free.
I don't know why I had doubts about AJ's ability to make this happen, because Ere's past and personality are just soooooooo complex... BUT SHE DID IT FOLKS! And IT'S PHENOMENAL!!!
OK, so I basically said a bunch without really reviewing anything or telling you any of the story. You will just have to read it. Read the other reviews too.
But here are some highlights I loved. I don't typically do this... collect quotes from books. Too lazy to type them. But I can't help it. It's THAT good!
If he was the size of an ant, he’d cliff-dive off those cheekbones and hope to be caught upon those beautiful, full lips. If they weren’t as soft as they looked and he broke upon impact, it would be a glorious, worthwhile sacrifice. Maybe he’d get lost in the beard instead. Maybe he’d root around in the thick, forest-like maze and never come out. -Ere meeting Sorin for the first time
Where to start? he wondered. But then, he realized it didn’t matter. It wasn’t the where that was important. It was simply that he start. - Ere thinking about the bounty that is Sorin
“You might shake loose a spleen if you don’t let that laugh out. You only have the one spleen. I hear it’s one of those noncritical but irreplaceable body parts. Rather like me. Annoying but one of a kind.” - Ere to Sorin
If Sorin laughed at him now, he would just die. He wanted the bed to turn into a miniature black hole and suck him into an alternate universe so he could disappear and pretend this never happened. And he’d only come back through the portal when his new and improved alternate self was a bonified sex god. - Ere after a "preamy creamy" ...more

Mike is one sexy badass MF. Manly MAN. God, I love him. Too bad he's gay. I wanna hunt him down and chain him to my bed...
My fave kinda romance hero: few words. protective. deeply loving. confident, but vulnerable. loyal. I can go on. Good lord! Where can I get one????
Liam is perfect for him. I ached for Mike (bc he'd never admit it outright how it hurt him when Liam "cheated"). I hurt so bad for him. But folks, just so we're clear - Liam didn't really cheat. Mike wasn't claiming him. He thought Mike didn't want him. He's a teenager still. So I gave him a pass. Plus, it wasn't penetration. BJs are kinda not full sex for MM novels for me.
Anyway...
Liam's perseverance with Mike, his determination, his dedication to love at such a young age. Liam is one helluva man too. And the way he took care of Mike later in life. God, what Mike went through... All that pain and fear and suffering alone. When Liam would have given up everything to be at his side. That's what I love about Mike too-- that he loves Liam so much he lets him go. And Liam loves Mike so much that he always comes back.
It was sad in the end, I won't lie. But this is not a tragedy. Despite the years they were apart in the middle, this is still a powerful, complete love story despite the length of the book.
I don't think Liam will love anyone the way he loves Mike. Even "after." That's my view of it anyway. These two are meant to be together.
What can I say that others haven't already about this phenomenal book? The one that comes full circle from book 1 (but not to worry, fans, oARC REVIEW
What can I say that others haven't already about this phenomenal book? The one that comes full circle from book 1 (but not to worry, fans, our favorite baddie will get his HEA hopefully in the "extra" book).
And.....too many to tally! YOU JUST GOTTA READ FOR YOURSELF!!
Here's what I will say:
As background, you should know that Sophia and Dalair have never been my fave couple. Esp. Sophia. I like Dalair just fine. And I LOVED his novella
[image]
that was told entirely from his POV.
We met Sophia from Book 1
[image]
when she was a bratty teenager starting college. I am not fond as a rule of teenagers. I prefer not to have to interact with them in real life, so... it's me, not you, Sophia.
But she has finally come into her own in this book. Her character arc has developed over the course of the whole series, which, including novellas, is pretty involved, culminating in her and Dalair's HEA in this book, #12.
Dalair is Dalair in this book. I still like his novella better bc I just love hearing his thoughts, since he shows so little outwardly and doesn't express verbally either. There's a LOT of silent, brooding, tortured heroes in this series. And since that's one of my fave types of heroes, I don't complain.
The best part, tho, to Firstpella's point, for me anyway, was BENJI and EREBU in this book. The epic battle at the end was incomparable IMO thus far in the series. I don't know how Aja will top this in book 13.
All in all, an absolute must-read.... AND I am on the edge of my seat for the next book!!!

Ariana Nash LOVES the enemies to lovers theme. Just about EVERY one of her primary works has ** SPOILERS BELOW, READ at your own peril**

Ariana Nash LOVES the enemies to lovers theme. Just about EVERY one of her primary works has been about enemies to lovers. I'm not usually a fan, but she makes it work for me. There's the right level of push and pull, character development and transformation. There are real reasons why there's hate in the beginning, how the 2 MCs come together, then separated by hate again.
I have a few issues.
I think 1) Severen's realization that he loves Mikhail was a little sudden, would have liked to see more nuance because all this time he spends 2/3 of the book hating and then in like 3 pages or so, he totally went 180. Now I know he never truly hated, there was always something there, but his internal transition from hate to love could have been explored more.
2) Mikhail's realization of S's betrayal was also sudden. All this time he trusted, and he just shared so much physically and emotionally with Severen. He trusted him blindly before and suddenly he believes other people's words over S's even tho they'd come so far? I mean S tried to kill him before, and he totally rationalized it away! Even when confronted with S's direct actions (nothing says I hate you and want you to die like shooting arrows into your chest) he rationalized it away. Now suddenly, after everything, hearing 2 angels tell him of S's betrayal, he suddenly believes? That felt really rushed and strange given all the other stuff.
3) S cheated. Now I get that he hadn't admitted to himself by then that he loves M, but... if the author is also saying that he loved M all along and that's why the "bond" worked and that's why he couldn't kill M, but it was all subconscious, and yeah I know he couldn't finish the act, but he cheated. Whatever the reason, I don't like reading about cheating, see below, even when explained. I think he could have "struggled" in a different way and it would have been just as effective.
So, all that combined takes this down a star. I'd read the next book. But I hope it doesn't drag out.
Oh, and A+ for the world build. I loved winged immortals, demons or angels! And this was a great take on things....more
