The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet

In this historical novel, an unassuming Dutch bookkeeper named Jacob de Zoet falls in love with a beautiful midwife in 18th-century Japan. When Miss Aiba-gawa is spirited away to a mountain monastery, Jacob finds the heroism in his soul. Here is a bygone secret world full of charm and horror. Mitchell is best known for Cloud Atlas, which was a literary stunt in this correspondent’s opinion. The Thousand Autumns is far better.

Although I really loved the Cloud Atlas "stunt" as you call it, I 100% agree that this book surpassed it. The breadth of research that was required to make the telling so authentic boggles the mind. But the book is in no way pedantic, because the plot is so riveting. All the historical details act as literary bracing, keeping this time and place within which Mitchell weaves his tale structurally sound.
Wonderful book! Read it for the rich, evocative and tactile language and the stonking great story! Very satisfying - even on my second read.
This was a wonderful emotional read for me, so well written and researched I recommend it very highly
Great book, David Mitchell seems the have a thing for cannibalism. And I used to spend summers in Vrouwenpolder, the hometown of Jacob de Zoet.
I don't relate much but it sounds very good and worth to read over summer break that would be so relaxing I lovee reading💗💕💗💕
